Workers in shipping companies go on strike indefinitely

Employees of shipping companies in all port formations in Nigeria have begun an indefinite strike today in protest of low wages and what they claim to be dehumanizing working conditions. The strike is being directed by the leadership of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN).

In addition, the strike is taking place at all dry ports, jetties, and terminals, among other locations.

It was reported that dockworkers, workers from the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), workers from the Nigerian Inland Water Ways (NIWA), and employees from Water Transportation would all join together beginning tomorrow in an act of solidarity if the shipping companies failed to address the workers’ complaints.

This came about as the Nigerian Shippers Council, also known as the NSC, called for a meeting of stakeholders to be held today in a last-ditch effort to find a solution to the problem and make sure that the current industrial crisis does not result in the closure of all of the nation’s ports.

It has been brought to our attention that the meeting of stakeholders, which will take place on the premises of the NSC, will begin at 8.30 in the morning.

It was decided at the strategic meeting that took place over the weekend between leaders of MWUN and officials of the Shipping branch of MWUN, including plant officials of each shipping company, that regardless of the meeting that was called by NSC, all operations of shipping companies must be shut down as of today until further notice. Remember that on Thursday, in Lagos, the President General of MWUN, Prince Adewale Adeyanju, explained that the strike was caused by poor remuneration of workers as well as the refusal of shipping companies operating in Nigeria to agree on a minimum standard for working conditions and remuneration of staff. Adeyanju expressed his disappointment that the NSC appeared to have completely lost its control and regulatory powers over the shipping companies, as these companies had refused to obey the interventions of the federal government regarding the matter.

Estate developer accused of defrauding church of N65m

The Federal High Court in Lagos on Friday remanded Kelly Nwogu, an estate developer, for allegedly defrauding a church of N65 million.

The Police Special Fraud Unit has filed three counts of conspiracy, obtaining by false pretense, and fraudulent conversion against the defendant.

Nwogu was charged before Justice Peter Lifu along with his business, Livelihood Homes Limited, and other suspects who are still at large.

According to the prosecutor, Emmanuel Jackson, the crimes were committed this year by the defendants and other people who are still at large.

Jackson testified in court that the real estate developer, his business, and other individuals who are still at large defrauded a church in Lagos State’s Ojodu neighborhood out of N65 million by making false claims that they had land for sale in Lagos’ Agbara-Badagry Expressway and the Ewekoro Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The defendant, according to him, failed to distribute the land as promised and failed to pay the church back after receiving the money from the church.

He asserts that the offenses were in violation of Sections 8(a), 1(1)(8), and Section 1(3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, No. 14 of 2006, as well as Section 15(2)(b) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011, as amended in 2012.

Nwogu, however, entered a not guilty plea to the accusation.

Following the defendant’s plea of not guilty, the prosecution requested a trial date and urged the court to remand the defendant in the care of the Nigerian Correctional Centre until the allegations against him were resolved.

However, the defendant’s attorney, Bernard Omang, asked the court to grant the most lenient conditions possible for the defendant’s admission to bail.

The court denied his request on the grounds that a proper application was not submitted to support it.

As a result, Justice Lifu mandated that the defendant be kept in custody at the Ikoyi Custodial Center and postponed the case’s start date for the trial until June 14.

Police accuse man of stealing over N12 million

Kehinde Adewumi, also known as “Hunter,” was charged on Friday by the Lagos State Police Command with armed robbery in the Mushin region of the state.

Before Magistrate Nwaka, the 33-year-old defendant was charged with three counts of robbery and armed robbery.

In Mushin in 2022, Adewumi and a few of his gang members are accused of robbing Stanley Nwabuwa at gunpoint and taking his valuables, including his ATM card, which they then allegedly used to withdraw N12.2 million.

Adewunmi allegedly received N1.4 million as his share of the theft from a Point of Sales agent after the robbery.

The police approached the POS agent, who, according to the prosecution, could only identify the money’s recipient as Adewumi. This led to the defendant’s arrest.

Adewumi committed the crime on May 18, 2022, at No. 8, Abolarin Street, Mushin, Lagos, according to the prosecutor, Thomas Nurudeen, who was standing in front of the court with a brief in support of ASP Adebeshin Shamsudeen.

According to Nurudeen, the offenses violated and were punishable by Sections 411 and 328 of the Lagos, Nigeria, Criminal Laws of 2015.

The charge stated, in part, “That you, Kehinde Adewumi, aka “Hunter,” did conspire with another person to commit a felony, namely robbery, on May 18, 2022, at No. 8 Abolarin Street, Mushin, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, and as a result, you committed an offense punishable under Section 411 of the Criminal Laws Of Lagos, Nigeria, 2015.”

However, the accused entered a not guilty plea.

He was granted bail in the amount of N3 million with three sureties by Magistrate Nwaka.

He put the case back until July 31, 2023.

Femi Fani-Kayode, a chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, has criticized the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, for its plan to shut down the economy of the country by embarking on a nationwide strike on Wednesday. The strike is scheduled to begin at 8:00 a.m. local time.

As part of Governor Peter Mbah’s efforts to put an end to the sit-at-home protests that have been going on throughout Enugu State, a total of 67 Biafra separatists who were arrested in various parts of the state have been remanded in prison custody.

Following the appointment of Senator George Akume as the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, three lawmakers from the North Central region who are running for leadership positions in the National Assembly have been urged to withdraw from the race for those positions. Chief Olisa Metuh, a former national publicity secretary for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has urged the South East Chapter of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) not to shut down the region in protest over the removal of subsidy. He added that the subsidy regime benefits the oppressors, not the oppressed and that the regime should be abolished.

Metuh, who recalled how he worked with the South East chapter of the NLC to reject the nationwide strike that paralyzed the region in January of 2012, added that fuel subsidy has never been of benefit to the masses of the South East, highlighting the fact that it has only been beneficial to the wealthy and the economic saboteurs in the land. “It is on the basis of this premise that I come to you once more to urge you to resist the attempt to be blindly lured into shutting down our region for a fight that will not be to the benefit of the average people living in the South East. The South East should rather concentrate on the challenges that are currently facing us in order to put our God-given inventiveness to use.

“We must use the energies of our Labor fronts to get the current administration to address the issue of insecurity, economic retrogression in the South East, as well as the unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu from incarceration. These imperatives were disregarded, ignored, and even encouraged by the previous administration. We must use the energies of our Labor fronts to get the current administration to address these issues.”

“As the people are being asked to make sacrifices, and without prejudice to the petitions in the Presidential Election Petition Court, I call on President Tinubu to demonstrate leadership by immediately taking steps to ameliorate the suffering of Nigerians by cutting down on the size of government, ending the profligacy associated with governments, and channeling the resources to projects, amenities, and facilities that directly impact on the well-being of the people. ”

“We cannot remove the subsidy on fuel while at the same time continuing to subsidize the lavish lifestyle of political office holders, spending government money to maintain the luxury presidential fleet, providing services to posh government houses, purchasing expensive vehicles, securing luxury apartments, and financing wasteful trips for government functionaries to the detriment of the wellbeing of the people.

“The end of subsidy on petrol must mark the end of luxury government guest houses, long convoys, hiring of private jets by governors and public officers, foreign medical trips, and jumbo allowances for political office holders,” said one politician. “The end of the subsidy on petrol must mark the end of these things.”

He went on to say that Tinubu should be prepared to reduce the cost of running the Presidential Villa by getting rid of extraneous items and that he should also reduce the number of Presidential aides and appoint ministers, special advisers, and other aides who are willing to forego luxury cars, expensive accommodations, and fat allowances in favor of living with the people and making do with public amenities and facilities along with other Nigerians.

“I am writing to urge the South East Chapter of the NLC to reconsider their position to shut down our region in order to participate in a protest that will benefit those who oppress others, not those who are oppressed. “Our enterprising spirit, which flourishes on daily commercial life and which we must not repress by shutting down our own homeland, which has been greatly impoverished by sponsored security challenges, is the life wire of the South East,” he said. “Daily commercial life is where our entrepreneurial spirit thrives.”

Alhaji Yahaya Bello, the governor of Kogi State, came dangerously close to losing his life on Saturday when his convoy was reportedly attacked and blocked by some criminals who were thought to be political thugs.
