Atiku’s campaign slams politicians who advocate for religious balancing

0

Daniel Bwala, the spokesman for the Presidential Campaign Organisation of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has criticised politicians for their support of Senator Godswill Akpabio’s bid to become the next President of the Senate and their advocacy for religious tolerance within the political system.

Bwala stated that the politicians who support the appointment of a Christian to the position of Senate President are the same ones who attacked him when he voiced his opposition to the All Progressives Congress (APC) running a Muslim-Muslim ticket in the 2023 elections.

In a tweet posted via his Twitter handle on Monday, the PDP chieftain claimed that he had been vindicated because the same politicians who previously stated that religious balancing does not matter for the Presidency now believe that it matters now for the Senate Presidency.

His words were as follows: “As I listen to politicians today (from the highest to the lowest) vehemently advocating for my good friend Sen Godswill Akpabio’s bid for the presidency and making the strong points for religious balancing in the polity, I take solace in the fact that it was these same politicians across both religions that vilified me at the time for taking a principled stand in that regard; they said it didn’t matter then, but it matters now.”

“I was right all along. But the answer to the question of whether or not they have waited too long to argue their point will be revealed tomorrow.

This statement was made by Bwala just a few hours after Vice President Kashim Shettima stated that the current political structure of the nation required the emergence of a southern Christian and a northern Muslim as the fairest balance to promote inclusivity at the centre.

Fear grips Yari’s camp over rumours of his impending arrest

0

One of the candidates vying for the position of Senate President for the 10th National Assembly, Abdulaziz Yari, is rumoured to be arrested in the hours leading up to tomorrow’s vote for the Presiding Officers of the 10th National Assembly. Speculations suggest that this could happen.

It has been brought to our attention that rumours are being spread about the possibility that he will be detained by security personnel and removed from the city of Abuja before Tuesday morning.

These reports are starting to surface just a few hours before the 10th Assembly is scheduled to begin, which is when the leadership will be decided.

According to the Daily Sun, Yari’s camp has claimed that pressure will be put on security agents to do everything in their power to prevent Yari and many of his key supporters from entering the National Assembly on Tuesday. This allegation was made in response to a report that claimed that Yari will be able to access the building.

This platform brings to your attention the fact that Yari, who has refused to step down in favour of Godswill Akpabio, the consensus candidate of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC), is said to have the support of more than sixty percent of his fellow party members.

You may recall that on Thursday of this week, the Federal High Court in Abuja extended the order that stopped the Department of State Services (DSS), the Independent Corrupt Practises and other related offences Commission (ICPC), and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from detaining Yari.

The EFCC, ICPC, and DSS are not permitted to detain Yari until June 27, 2023, which is the date on which they must appear before the Federal High Court in Abuja, which is presided over by Justice Donatus Okorowo.

An oral application was made to the court by Yari’s attorney, Michael Aondoaka, which led to the court’s order. At the same time, Gloria Ogbason, who represented the EFCC, and Kemi Odogun, who represented the ICPC, both asked the court for a postponement so that they could file their responses to Yari’s motion. The postponement allowed them to do so.

Senate President: Some governors support Tinubu’s choice – Makinde

According to the Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, some of his colleagues have decided to back President Bola Tinubu’s bid for the position of Senate President during the 10th National Assembly, which is scheduled to begin on Tuesday.

Monday in Ibadan, during the post-second term inauguration interdenominational thanksgiving service, which was organized in his honour by the state chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Makinde made this statement.

According to reports from the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the Thanksgiving service was held at the Oritamefa Baptist Church in Ibadan. The event was organized in conjunction with the Fathers of Faith in Oyo State.

The governor reported that the other governors met and decided to back Tinubu’s choice, “who is a Christian from the South-South region of Nigeria,” as their candidate for president of Nigeria.

“We are not engaging in political maneuvering based on religious beliefs, but what is fair is fair.

“We stood for Southern presidency; we stood for justice, fairness, and we are going to stand for equity as well,” he said. “We stood for justice, and fairness, and we are going to stand for equity as well.”

Makinde has guaranteed that he will be present at the National Assembly on Tuesday with the rest of his colleagues to ensure that the election for the senate president is conducted in a manner that is fair, just, and equitable.

He thanked CAN for its support and for organizing the Thanksgiving service. He also thanked everyone who attended the Thanksgiving service.

The governor also expressed his gratitude to the citizens of the state for re-electing him to office and promised that he would live up to their expectations during his second term in office.

He stated that he would have the opportunity to consolidate the majority of the work that was started during his first tenure during his second tenure, and he emphasized that his administration would put the state on the path to sustainable development.

Makinde gave the congregation his word that he would work hard and include the people of the state in the decision-making process regarding the administration of state government.

Apostle Joshua Akinyemiju, who serves as the Chairman of CAN in the state, gave a brief sermon in which he urged the congregation to concentrate on the sovereignty of God. He explained that this was the only way to achieve any level of success.

Akinyemiju admonished every civil and public servant in the state to obediently serve the will of their master (the governor) in all matters and to refrain from providing eye service.

In addition to this, he exhorted all of the Christian residents of the state to maintain their steadfast devotion to praying for the governor so that the state’s populace could continue to benefit from effective leadership.

Some members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who left Imo State to attend the 10th Assembly’s inauguration on Tuesday were killed in a road accident.

According to Cajetan Duke, the APC’s Imo spokesman, the vehicle in which they were travelling collided with another bus at Agbor in Delta State.

Though he stated that only two people were confirmed dead, several sources told our correspondent that three people died on the bus, while others with varying degrees of injuries were taken to hospitals.

The auto crash killed two males from the Amaraku community in the state’s Isiala Mbano Local Government Area and a female from the Ogbor community in the same Isiala Mbano LGA.

It was also learned that the victims were coordinators for Senator-elect Patrick Ndubueze of Imo North and House of Representatives member-elect Miriam Onuoha of Okigwe North Federal Constituency.

The incident was described as “a sad development” by Duke.

The Inauguration of the Tenth National Assembly, scheduled for Tuesday, is in full swing.

Senate Presidency: ‘Akpabio Caught in Crossfire of Tinubu, Adamu’s Cold War’

0

Godswill Akpabio, the candidate who has garnered the support of the majority of members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in order to win the election for the position of Senate President in the 10th National Assembly, may suffer some defeats.
This may be the result of the rumoured covert conflict that has been going on between President Bola Tinubu and Abdullahi Adamu, who is the National Chairman of the APC. It was picked up on.

It appears that Adamu is not concerned or bothered by the opposition that Akpabio is facing from other aspirants of the party who have refused to step down for party supremacy to prevail. There are strong indications that this is the case.

According to the information gathered by this platform, neither the President nor Adamu have participated in any one-on-one meetings since the latter’s inauguration, and there are rumours that the ongoing conflict between the two elephants may have an effect on the rise of Akpabio.

According to The Whistler, it was this alleged cold war between the two that caused Adamu to be reluctant to call and instil discipline where all candidates within the party opposing the president’s choice stepped down from their positions.

Also, it was learned that Akpabio attempted to meet with Adamu over the weekend in order to seek his support by concocting ways for opposing candidates to step down, but his efforts were in vain. Akpabio’s meeting with Adamu was unsuccessful.

It has been speculated among members of the APC that Adamu is less concerned about who will become the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives because neither of those individuals would be his choice for those top leadership positions.

It is important to remember that Salihu Moh Lukman, who is the Zonal Chairman of the APC for the North West, had earlier accused Adamu of working against the zoning arrangement that the party had established.

He claimed that in spite of the fact that Adamu was obligated to support the zoning arrangement for the principal offices of the 10th Assembly, “he is acting as a factional leader opposing the decision of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC.)”

Lukman had stated that “Instead of working for the success of the decision of the NWC through activating meetings of higher organs of the party to confer more legitimacy to the decision of the NWC, he seems to be more interested in ensuring that the 2015 model of rebellious leadership emerges in the 10th National Assembly.” Lukman’s statement was made in response to the fact that the NWC had made a decision.

To make matters even more difficult, sources within the party have revealed that members of the NWC are also busy lobbying for ministerial appointments, and as a result, they are less bothered about who emerges as what. This is a significant development that will only make matters worse.

On Sunday, it was learned that concerted efforts were being made to eliminate the most formidable opponent of Akpabio, the former Governor of Zamfara State, Abdul-Aziz Yari, by co-opting his most formidable ally, Orji Uzor Kalu, who is the immediate Chief Whip of the Senate.

A member of the Murkta Betara camp who claimed to have joined the APC during its formative years told The Whistler that “The National Working Committee of the APC is not bothered because those announced as the choices of the party were those selected by the president,” adding that “the party could have shown more interest if it “had a say” in the matter.

However, a member of the Akpabio camp has stated that efforts are still being made to ensure that the party’s National Chairman views “the project as his and the party’s rather than the president’s, he has to see it that way,” according to the source.

Ondo in disarray as the Dep Gov allegedly moves against Akeredolu, and the exco is divided.

Members of the Ondo State Executive Council are in a state of tension as a result of rumours that the deputy governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, is planning to run against his boss, Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, for the governorship seat. This comes after rumours that Governor Akeredolu may be suffering from ill health.

The governor is said to have become aware of the deputy governor’s alleged lack of loyalty and has grown increasingly uncomfortable with his purported ambition, according to sources within the cabinet. Also, the governor is said to have become aware of the deputy governor’s alleged ambition.

Despite the fact that the Deputy Governor has not yet made an official announcement of his intention to run for Governor in the upcoming elections in 2024, it has been reported that the campaign has already begun.

The first sign of trouble appeared after Akeredolu left for vacation and gave the deputy governor responsibility for running the governor’s office.

During the brief time that the deputy governor served as acting governor, there were allegations that he put his own interests ahead of those of the state and the governor.

In addition, some of the members of the executive council have levelled accusations against the deputy governor, saying that he was the one responsible for spreading lies about the governor’s health, which led to rumours that he had passed away.

The deputy governor is the one who started the rumours about the governor’s health, according to sources within the executive council who requested that their identities be kept secret due to the delicate nature of the matter.

One of the members of the executive council stated unequivocally that Akeredolu’s health was not deteriorating, while at the same time expressing worry about the governor’s selection of deputy governors.

“The Deputy Governor is the one who is behind all of these rumours that are going around. The truth of the matter is that following the Cabinet meeting that took place three weeks ago and the subsequent courtesy visits, the governor made the decision to take some time off in order to rest.

It has been suggested that the governor take some time out to deliberately relax and recharge. Therefore, the deputy governor paid him a visit to Ibadan while also bringing some documents with him. On the other hand, he did not make the governor or any of his closest advisors aware of his visit. As soon as they arrived in Ibadan, the governor signed the documents, and they were then given back to him. The governor, on the other hand, did not wait to speak with the deputy governor.

“Once he arrived back in Akure, he immediately began telling some of our other associates that the governor ought to transfer power to him. He went so far as to try to convince members of the executive committee to back his position.

“He purposefully began spreading these rumours about the governor’s health in order to win the sympathy and support of the general public. The deputy governor deceived us in this matter. We didn’t find out the truth until we took matters into our own hands and started communicating with the governor.

“On the previous Monday, the governor signed the salary for the month of May 2023. It should reassure you that the governor is in charge and actively involved in the process that they are actively involved in that the ministries are functioning. At the moment, he is frustrated and angry as a result of these untrue stories.

An insider in the government, on the other hand, claims that the deputy governor already has his supporters working within the cabinet.

“If they are successful in their attempt to oust the governor from office, the deputy governor has guaranteed one of the Commissioners that he will serve as the governor’s deputy. In addition to that, he made a commitment to appoint one more member of the cabinet to the position of Secretary to the State Government.

“Unfortunately, there are two Commissioners vying for the position of deputy governor in Aiyedatiwa. Both of them belong to the same party. In addition, a Special Adviser has sworn allegiance to the deputy governor as part of her plan to be nominated for the position of NDDC State Representative. This plot was devised by the deputy governor.

All of these individuals are currently cooperating with one another in their efforts to convince the governor to give more power to the deputy governor.

“The governor and the deputy governor got together for a meeting the week before last, and during that meeting, the governor signed several documents, one of which was the salary for the Local Government. Why would the deputy governor keep quiet while the media reported unfavourable things about his boss? the question begs to be answered. We are aware that he is accountable for them.

“In point of fact, he was convinced to issue a statement refuting these false reports; however, he decided against doing so. It is very upsetting to witness behaviour like this coming from a deputy governor that the governor personally selected for the position.

“In point of fact, he was encouraged to issue a statement disputing these made-up stories; however, he declined to do so. He said that it was “truly disappointing to witness such behaviour from someone who was handpicked by the governor and made deputy governor.” “It is truly disappointing to witness such behaviour from someone who was made deputy governor.”

Kenneth Odusola, who serves as the press secretary for Aiyedatiwa, issued the following statement in response to the recent development: “this falsehood and its peddlers would have ordinarily been ignored at this time, but the need to stop further negative reports and rumours capable of creating needless tension in our state has necessitated this response.”

“The said allegation against the person of the deputy governor is a figment of the imagination of those behind it,” the statement continued. “Their ungodly intentions to cause crisis in the State had been known for weeks, and therefore such falsehood did not come as a surprise.”

Hon. Shaaban Ibrahim Sharada, Executive Secretary of the Almajirai and Out-of-School Children Commission of Nigeria, has made available to thirty-two students scholarships totaling more than seven million Nigerian naira (N7,000,000) to assist them in their pursuit of an education at the Open University.
In addition, Shaaban, who is a lawmaker and represents the Kano municipal federal constituency in the House of Representatives, contributed N50 million to Alqalam University for the benefit of students from the Kano municipal council. These students had been attending school in Sudan at the time of the conflict in that country, but they had to move their studies elsewhere.
Representatives from a variety of organisations, such as the Independent Corrupt Practises and Other Related Offences Commission, the National Boundary Commission, and the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria, were among the most notable attendees at the presentation ceremony.
During his remarks, Sharada expressed his gratitude to the Almajirai and Out-of-School Children Commission for providing him with the opportunity to serve as the Executive Secretary of the Commission.
While reiterating his commitment to the work of the commission, he gave the dignitaries the assurance that his appointment would result in an increase in the overall value of the project.
In addition, he promised to keep funding educational initiatives and stated that the practise of offering financial aid in the form of scholarships and grants would be carried on in conjunction with the individual who would succeed him, Engineer Sagir Koki.
One of the things that was done as part of the activities to mark the occasion was the handing out of cash grants. The heads of political parties, particularly those affiliated with the APC, were each given a cash award of N100,000, while the heads of political parties in the second category received N50,000 each, and the heads of political parties in the third category were granted N30,000 Naira each, bringing the total number of individuals who benefited to over 1,300.
Shaaban Ibrahim Sharada is serving as the Executive Secretary of the Almajirai and Out-of-School Children Commission. Gwani Yahuza Gwani Danzarga expressed gratitude on behalf of the community for having Shaaban Ibrahim Sharada in this role.
He emphasised that Sharada’s appointment was well-deserved and expressed confidence in his ability to contribute more value to the commission’s goals. He also said that he was looking forward to working with Sharada.
Benga from SMEDAN acknowledged the grants and scholarships offered by the Sharada Elders. At the same time, he recognised the significance of the financial support in promoting entrepreneurship and economic development among the younger generation.
It was demonstrated that a commitment to the fair and equitable distribution of resources was made through the distribution of the cash grants in batches.
The event was brought to a close with the presentation of a cheque in the amount of N50 million to Alqalam University and another cheque in the amount of N7 million to the Open University. These cheques served as a symbol of the commitment to investing in education and advocating for a more promising future for young people.
A concerted effort towards sustainable development and empowerment is demonstrated by the activities that are being carried out by the Sharada Elders. These activities include the provision of support to students and entrepreneurs.
The Elders of Sharada are leading the way for other communities to follow in their pursuit of advancement and prosperity by the example they are setting with their commitment to the advancement of education and economic opportunities.
The Sharada Elders, led by Head Sani A Sani, made the following honourable request in an effort to encourage long-term sustainability and give a voice to the younger generation. Shaaban Ibrahim Sharada is the brains behind a number of initiatives, many of which are geared towards encouraging entrepreneurship and education.

NATO launches unprecedented air drill in ‘show of strength’

0

On Monday, the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) will begin what will be the largest air force deployment exercise in Europe in the history of the alliance. This is being done as a show of unity towards partners and potential threats such as Russia.

The German-led “Air Defender 23” exercise will continue until the 23rd of June and will involve approximately 250 military aircraft from 25 NATO and partner countries. These countries include Japan and Sweden, both of which are candidates for membership in the alliance.

The exercises will involve as many as 10,000 people and are designed to improve interoperability and preparedness in the event of an attack using drones or cruise missiles against cities, airports, or sea ports located within NATO territory. The exercises will take place in Europe.

Lieutenant General Ingo Gerhartz of the German Luftwaffe said in his presentation of the plans last week that “Air Defender” was conceived in 2018 in part as a response to the Russian annexation of Crimea from Ukraine four years earlier. However, he emphasised that the initiative was “not targeted at anyone.”

He stated that even though the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation would defend “every centimetre” of its territory, the exercise would not “send any flights, for example, in the direction of Kaliningrad.” Kaliningrad is a Russian enclave that borders the member states of the alliance Poland and Lithuania.

“Since we are a defensive alliance, we have designed this exercise with a defensive focus,” he explained.

Amy Gutmann, the United States Ambassador to Germany, stated that the exercise would demonstrate “without a shadow of a doubt the agility and the swiftness of our allied force.” She also stated that the exercise was intended to send a message to countries including Russia.

“I would be pretty surprised if any world leader was not taking note of what this shows in terms of the spirit of this alliance, which means the strength of this alliance, and that includes Mr. Putin,” she said to the reporters, referring to the Russian president. “This alliance is strong,” she said, referring to the strength of the alliance.

“By cooperating with one another, we are able to increase our power.”

The Western military alliance that was established almost 75 years ago to do battle with the Soviet Union has been galvanised as a direct result of Russia’s war on Ukraine.

Following Russia’s invasion in February 2022, both Finland and Sweden made applications to become members of NATO, despite having maintained for a long time an official veneer of neutrality to avoid conflict with Moscow.

An attack on one member of NATO is considered an attack on all of the members, as stated in Article Five of the NATO Charter.

Training on both an operational and a tactical level will be a part of the exercise, which will take place primarily in Germany but also in the Czech Republic, Estonia, and Latvia. On Friday, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will travel to the Schleswig-Jagel airfield located in northern Germany to meet with pilots who are stationed there.

According to General Michael Loh, who directs the United States Air National Guard, NATO’s responsibilities have reached a “inflection point.”

He stated, “A great deal has changed on the strategic landscape throughout the world, especially here in Europe,” and he emphasised that this change was especially noticeable in Europe.

“supplementing the permanent United States presence in Europe” and providing training “on a larger scale than what was usually accomplished on the continent” are going to be the primary focuses of the exercise, as stated by Loh.

He indicated that a good number of the alliance pilots would be collaborating with one another for the first time.

He stated, “It’s about fostering the old relationships that we have, but also building new ones with this younger generation of airmen.” “It’s about building new ones with this younger generation of airmen,” he said.

“And so what we are doing here is establishing what it means to go up against a great power in a competition between great powers,”

Although there are no current plans to make “Air Defender” a recurring exercise, Gutmann stated that “We have no desire for this to be the last.”

When asked about the possibility that the exercise could cause disruptions to civilian air transport, Gerhartz responded that the organisers would do “everything in our power” to limit the number of flight delays or cancellations.

The German authorities had previously issued a warning that the drills could potentially disrupt flight schedules.

Democracy Day: Niger gov releases 80 inmates

0

80 prisoners from the state’s various prisons have received forgives from Niger State Governor Umaru Bago.

The governor also gave his approval for the inmates to pay their fines right away so they can reunite with their families.

The gesture was made to commemorate 2023 Democracy Day, according to a statement made by Alhaji Abubakar Usman, Secretary to the State Government, on Monday in Minna.

Using the prerogative of mercy granted to the governor by the Constitution, he explained that the release of the prisoners was in accordance with that.

Usman stated that due to their advanced age, poor health, and good behaviour, the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy recommended the release of the 80 prisoners.

Usman urged the prisoners to seize the chance to work on worthwhile projects and avoid doing anything that might land them in jail again.

Additionally, he warned them to uphold the law and engage in lawful activities by utilising various empowerment windows.

He urged the state’s citizens to maintain their commitment to preserving democracy and instilling virtues like tolerance, patriotism, and discipline, and he urged them not to let despair take the place of hope.

The SSG stated that the government was very concerned about the security issues in the state and was fully equipped to deal with them.

HIS EXCELLENCE PRESIDENT BOLA AHMED Tinubu, GCFR’S DEMOCRACY DAY NATIONAL BROADCAST ON JUNE 12, 2023

Fellow Nigerians,

It has been exactly three decades since Nigerians went to the polls to exercise their inalienable right to elect a President of their choice to lead the transition from military dictatorship to a representative government of the people.

The military’s abrogation of Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola’s decisive victory in the June 12, 1993, presidential election, up to that point the fairest and freest election in the country’s political evolution, turned out to be the seed that germinated into the protracted struggle that gave birth to the democracy we now enjoy since 1999.

Read Also: Benue gov establishes committee to reclaim stolen public property

The substantial number of our people who participated in the struggle to de-annul the election symbolized their fierce commitment to enthroning democracy as a form of government that best ennobles liberty, the dignity of the individual, and the integrity as well as the stability of the polity. The fierce opposition to the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election, and the unrelenting pro-democracy onslaught it unleashed, was the equivalent of our founding fathers’ battle against colonial rule, which resulted in Nigeria’s independence in 1960.

The pro-June 12 vanguard, like the anti-colonial movement, demonstrated the enduring validity of 19th century historian Arnold Toynbee’s eternal postulation, that civilization, and societies progress as they are forced to respond to environmental challenges. The unjust annulment of a widely acknowledged free and fair election was a challenge that elicited resistance from a resurgent civil society, ultimately leading to our second independence,’ as exemplified by the return of democratic governance in 1999.

Fellow Nigerians, we celebrate a day that has remained a watershed in our nation’s history, not just today, but for every June 12 that our beloved country shall exist and wax stronger and stronger, generations of Nigerians will always remind themselves that democracy that is steadily growing to become the defining essence of our polity was not handed to us on a silver platter.

We can easily recall Chief MKO Abiola’s sacrifice and martyrdom as the custodian of the sacred mandate that was cruelly annulled. He gave his life in unyielding, patriotic defence of democratic ideals, as symbolized by his election as duly-elected President by his fellow countrymen and women. He had an easier option. It was to forego the justice of his cause in favour of the path of ease and capitulation in the face of power tyranny. To his eternal credit and immortal glory, Abiola said no. He demonstrated the time-tested eternal truth that certain ideals and principles are far more valuable than life itself.

Every day on this day, we will remember several other heroes of democracy, such as Kudirat Abiola, Chief Abiola’s wife, who was brutally murdered while fighting on the side of the people. We remember Pa Alfred Rewane, one of our independence struggle’s heroes, and Major General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua (rtd), who were silenced by the military junta while fighting for democracy. They gave them yesterday for the liberty we have today.

The point is that we must never take our democracy for granted. We must always jealously guard and protect it as if it were a valuable jewel. People can never truly appreciate the freedoms and rights that democracy provides them until they lose them.

We’ve been down the dark, thorny path of dictatorship before, and those who have can attest to the unbridgeable gap between the dignity of freedom and the humiliation and degradation of tyranny. True, some people see rancorous debates, endless wrangling, never-ending quarrels, and bitter electoral contests as unappealing aspects of democracy. However, they also attest to its worth and value.

This year marked the seventh in a series of elections that have become sacred rituals of our democratic practice in this dispensation since 1999.

The fact that the polls were hotly contested is evidence that democracy is alive and well in our country. It is only natural that, while those who won and experienced victory in the various elections are elated and fulfilled, those who lost are disenchanted and disappointed. But the beauty of democracy is that those who win today may lose tomorrow, and those who lose today may compete and win in the next round of elections.

Those who cannot bear and accept the agony of defeat in elections do not deserve the joy of victory when it is their turn to triumph. Above all, those who disagree with the outcome of the elections are fully utilizing the constitutional provisions to seek redress in court, which is one of the reasons why democracy remains the best form of government invented by man.

For Chief MKO Abiola, the symbol of this day, whose memory is commemorated on June 12 as a national holiday, democracy is eternal.

It is about the rule of law and a vibrant judiciary that can be relied on to deliver justice and strengthen institutions. It is now necessary to state unequivocally that unnecessary illegal orders used to truncate or abridge democracy will no longer be tolerated.

The recent harmonization of the retirement age for judicial officers is intended to strengthen the rule of law, which is a critical pillar of democracy. The reform has only recently begun.

The democracy that will pay out the right dividends to the shareholders entails more than just the freedom of choice and the right to elect people to public office. It entails social and economic justice for our people. To the winner of the June 12 election, democracy provides the best opportunity to combat and eradicate poverty. He named his campaign manifesto ‘Farewell to Poverty’ thirty years ago because he was convinced that poverty is not divine. It is a man-made problem that can be solved with well-thought-out social and economic policies.
As a result, in my inaugural address on May 29, I gave effect to my predecessor-in-office’s decision to remove the fuel subsidy albatross and free up much-needed resources that had previously been pocketed by a few wealthy. I admit that the decision will impose an additional burden on the majority of our people. I understand how you feel. This is one decision we must make to keep our country from imploding and to free our resources from the clutches of a few unpatriotic elements.

I have begged you, my countrymen, to make one more sacrifice for the sake of our country’s survival. I assure you that your sacrifice will not be in vain because of your faith and belief in us. The government I lead will repay you with massive investments in transport infrastructure, education, reliable power supply, healthcare, and other public utilities that will improve people’s lives.

The democracy for which MKO Abiola died is one that prioritises the welfare of the people over the personal interests of the ruling class, and one in which the governed can find personal fulfilment and happiness. That is the hope MKO Abiola spread throughout our country in 1993.

On this year’s Democracy Day, I urge all of us to renew our commitment to strengthening the form of government of free peoples that has served as our guiding light for the past 24 years. Those of us who have been elected to public offices at various levels in both the executive and legislative branches of government, in particular, must recommit to selfless service to the people and delivering concrete democracy dividends in accordance with our electoral promises.

On my part and on behalf of my administration, I renew our commitment to diligently fulfilling every component of our electoral pact with the people – the ‘Renewed Hope’ agenda.

We will be truthful. True to equity. And devoted to justice. We will exercise our authority and mandate to govern with fairness, respect for the rule of law, and a commitment to always uphold the dignity of all our people.

On that note, I wish everyone a happy Democracy Day and pray that the light of liberty never goes out in our country.

Thank you all, and may God continue to bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
