Kano gov reinstates revenue boss removed by Ganduje

Abba Yusuf, the governor of Kano State, has appointed Sani Sambo, the former executive chairman of the state Internal Revenue Service, back to his previous position.

The chief press secretary to the governor, Sanusi Tofa, made the announcement on Friday after overturning the suspension of the KIRS leader, who had earlier been fired by the state’s former governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, due to charges of corruption.

He has 20 years of expertise in tax administration and is currently a senior manager of tax audit at the Federal Inland Revenue Services in Abuja. He is also a fellow of the Nigeria Institute of Taxation.
The governor stressed the value of maintaining an open and responsible administration while expressing confidence in Dambo’s ability.

“We think Alhaji Sani Abdulkadir Dambo is the best choice to head the Kano Internal Revenue Service,” he continued. He will make a substantial contribution to our ongoing efforts to increase revenue generation and advance the state’s overall economic development thanks to his extensive experience and expertise in tax administration.

Friday, the Department of State Services (DSS) was mandated by Justice Hamza Muazu of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court to allow suspended Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele access to his family and attorneys.

Following an oral request from Joseph Daudu’s (SAN), counsel for the CBN governor, in a case with the filing number FCT/HC/CV/6450/23, the judge approved the order.

Respondents in the lawsuit included the Director-General of the DSS, the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), and the AGF.

Emefiele was detained by the agency shortly after President Bola Tinubu last week suspended him from his position.

In order to receive additional instructions from the CBN governor, Daudu told the court that he wrote letters to the DSS on June 14. However, the agency ignored the request.

However, I. Awo, the DSS’s attorney, rejected the allegation.

He declared that the organisation would abide by the court’s directive and permit access to Emefiele for his family and attorneys.

He also asked for a postponement of the deadline for the respondents to submit their individual replies to the initial motion.

The prayers were heard by the court.

After that, Justice Muazu put the matter on hold until June 20 so that the substantive lawsuit could be heard.

JUSTICE Sale Mansur Ali Mashi, a former member of the House of Representatives, was found guilty by Musa Shuaibu of the Federal High Court in Kaduna.

The conviction followed a drawn-out 12-year trial that involved accusations of conspiracy and obtaining through deception. In addition to Mashi, three bank employees—Abdulmumini Mustapha, Shehu Aliyu, and Muazu Abdu—were also found guilty.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, which filed the charges against Mashi, claimed that he had obtained a loan facility worth N212,439,552 from Sterling Bank using fictitious companies. When Mashi later used the money for personal expenses, he was found guilty on eight counts of fraud.

All of the defendants entered not guilty pleas when they were called to the stand for arraignment. The case went forward to trial, but there were several setbacks as a result of the trial judges’ retirement or elevation. Despite these obstacles, the prosecution was still able to present a number of exhibits and call six witnesses to the stand.

Both parties delivered their final written addresses at the most recent adjourned date. In order for the judge to render a decision, the case was postponed until June 15 and 16, 2023.

The first and fourth defendants were not present when the court reconvened on June 15, 2023. Despite their absence, the judge found the first defendant guilty on counts 1 through 8; as a result, he was found guilty and sentenced to prison time. Additionally convicted and found guilty on all counts was the fourth defendant.

But until they could be apprehended and brought before the court, the sentences for both defendants were postponed.

Former Sterling Bank branch manager Abdulmumin Mustapha was found guilty on counts 1 through 15 and given a five-year prison sentence on each count, without the possibility of a fine. Additionally, the court mandated that Mustapha pay N40,000,00 back to Sterling Bank.

The third defendant, the former head of the bank’s operations, received a discharge on counts 1–8, but was found guilty on counts 9–15. Additionally, he was given a five-year prison term on each count without the possibility of a fine.

On June 16, 2023, the first defendant, Mansur Ali Mashi, will receive a ruling in a separate case of contempt of court. Mashi is charged with selling assets that the court had taken through an interim forfeiture order from him in this case.

The release of Nnamdi Kanu, the head of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has been fiercely opposed by renowned Niger Delta leader Asari Dokubo, who claims that doing so would amount to encouraging criminal behaviour.

Kanu has reportedly been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since his 2021 re-arrest, where he is currently charged with terrorism.

Kanu was granted bail back in 2017 by the Federal High Court of Abuja, but he wilfully disregarded the terms and left the country. President Muhammadu Buhari had resisted calls for Kanu’s release firmly in the face of mounting pressure. New demands for the IPOB leader’s release have however surfaced since a new administration took office.

Peter Mbah, the governor of Enugu State, joined other governors in calling for Nnamdi Kanu’s release during his meeting with President Bola Tinubu.

Asari Dokubo recently told reporters that he thought Kanu ought to be held accountable by the law after speaking with President Tinubu.

In light of Kanu’s alleged role in inflaming the EndSars demonstrations, Dokubo emphasised the potential risks of releasing him. Kanu had reportedly been running loose during the EndSars movement and had even made things worse, according to Dokubo.

Dokubo brought up the issue of the people who perished during the unrest and said that Kanu was a criminal who ought to pay for his actions in court.

“Since Nnamdi Kanu was unhindered during EndSars, his release would encourage impunity. He did what, then? On the EndSars fire, he poured petrol. He has now been discovered. What happened to the deceased? This is illegal. He needs to go to jail.

“Releasing Nnamdi Kanu rewards criminal behaviour and glorifies the gruesome killing of innocent people. He should stand trial for the deeds and instigations he committed, the man said.

This newspaper previously highlighted Dokubo’s claim to Tinubu that the military and powerful organisations were to blame for the widespread oil theft in the nation.

Dokubo offered the aid of his followers to engage in battle and put an end to it. He stated that he was prepared to use his band of devoted supporters, referred to as “his boys,” to take the necessary steps to put an end to these evil deeds.

Oyo armed robbers kill father, rape daughters

A syndicate that murdered a middle-aged man named Makanjuola Ogedengbe and sexually assaulted his two daughters in the village of Apaatuku/Onireke in the Lagelu Local Government area of the state was among the 21 suspected armed robbers paraded by the Oyo State Police Command on Friday.

The victims were young children, 14 and 10, respectively.

The suspects were displayed at the command’s headquarters in Eleyele, Ibadan, according to Adewale Osifeso, Public Relations Officer for the Oyo State Police, who claimed that they were providing the police with useful information.

Osifeso claimed that on Sunday, May 14, 2023, at around 2:00 am, the suspects—who were carrying lethal weapons—invaded the neighbourhood, robbing locals of their valuables while shooting the deceased at close range.

According to him, a group of armed robbers entered the Apaatuku/Onireke at Akobo area of Ibadan on May 14, 2023, at around 4:00 a.m., and took valuables from the locals. One Makanjuola Ogedengbe was killed by the attackers, who also sexually assaulted his two daughters, who were 14 and 10, at the time.

“For a covert investigation, the case was given to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Iyaganku. Abiodun Olalekan, 32, Ibrahim Rasaq, 31, and Abolade Morenikeji, 34, were previously detained in connection with the armed robbery at Sawia Estate in Ogbere, Ibadan, which was reported on April 16, 2023. It was later discovered that these men belonged to the same gang that broke into the Apaatuku/Onireke community.

“Abolade Morenikeji’m’ and one Sodiq’m’ are accused of raping the two daughters of the deceased, respectively. The operation resulted in the death of the aforementioned Sodiq, who was the group’s alleged leader. The night guard for the neighbourhood was also shot by the assailants and is currently receiving medical attention.

“One Adebayo Salami’m’, a major receiver/informant of the group and landlord at Ajara Olohunda, Akobo in Ibadan, was detained in connection with the case on June 16, 2023, at around 03300 hours.

He admitted, “during questioning, that he had invited the group for the robbery operation at the Apaatuku area where one Makanjuola Ogedengbe’m’ was killed and his two daughters, aged 14 and 10, were deflowered by the robbery gang during the operation.”

PSC approves Mba, Ciroma’s appointments as DIGs

Frank Mba and Bala Ciroma, who were previously assistant inspectors general of police, have been appointed as deputy inspectors general of police with the approval of the Police Service Commission.

Ikechukwu Ani, the PSC’s spokesperson, said this in a statement on Friday.

Ani pointed out that DIG Ciroma will take DIG Ali Janga’s place as the North-East geopolitical zone’s representative on the Police Management Team, while DIG Mba will take the place of retired DIG John Amadi as the South-East zone’s representative.

“DIG Ciroma, the highest ranking zone officer, will going forward represent the zone. In place of retired DIG John Amadi, who previously represented the zone, DIG Mba will represent the South-East zone, according to a statement.

The commission also approved the promotion of 22 Deputy Commissioners of Police to the substantive rank of Commissioners and the promotion of 14 Commissioners of Police to the next rank of Assistant Inspectors General of Police.

According to the PSC, these decisions marked the high points of the commission’s 21st plenary, which was presided over by its chairman, De Solomon Arase, a former inspector general of police, and was attended by all of the commission’s members, including Dr. Ifeoma Anyanwutaku, the permanent secretary/secretary to the commission.

Abubakar Lawal, Alhassan Aminu, Abdul Umar, Shettima Zannah, Ebong Eyibio Ebong, Adepoju Ilori, and Okon Effiong, all former CPs, are the new AIGs.

Echeng Echeng, Susan Horsfall, Bankole Lanre Sikiru, Oladimeji Olarewaju, Sani Gwarzo, and Odama Ojeka are additional former CPs.

Abibo Reuben, Thomas Nabhoni, Wakil Salamai, Enyinnaya Inonachi, Ronke Okunade, and Adekunle Olusokan are among the 22 former deputy commissioners of police who have been promoted to the rank of chief police officers.

Aside from Hassan Yabnet, Festus Oko, Aminu Raji, Omolara Oluntola, Akoh Gabriel, Alamutu Mustapha, Bafda Jahun, Ahmadu Abdullahi, and Mohammed Mu’azu, they also include CPs.

Bretet Simon, Ihebom Chukuma, Shettima Qurtu, Olatokunbo Olabisi, Yusuf Lawal, Monica Leo, and Abaniwonda Olufemi are additional former DCPs.

The promotion of 24 Assistant Commissioners of Police to the position of DCPs was also approved by the commission.

They include Wan Chongs, Commander PMF 19 Port Harcourt; Baba Audu, Area Commander, Exeter Akwa-Ibom State Command; Mohammed Shamsudeen, Assistant Director, OPS, Kaduna (NCCSALW); Khan Usman, Networking Admin ICT FHQ, Abuja; and Ezekiel Ibrahim, Project Monitoring Unit, Force Headquarters, Abuja.

Kashim Shettima, vice president, has expressed regret for his remark regarding the election of the leaders of the 10th Assembly to the Muslim community.

Shettima stated, “Under the current dispensation, the worst incompetent Southern Christian is better than the most puritanical Northern Muslim for the Presidency of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria” in a meeting with lawmakers prior to the National Assembly election.

Particularly on social media, the remark sparked a contentious debate.

Shettima, however, claimed in an interview with BBC Hausa that his comments had been misinterpreted and that he had no desire to disparage his religion.
The comment I made, he claimed, was for Nigeria’s benefit but was misunderstood. I am provided with private intelligence reports that should not be made public.

I genuinely didn’t intend to hurt anyone or the Islamic faith in any way. I do, however, ask for forgiveness from my Lord and the rest of the community because I am a flawed human being. EFCC invites eight Buhari ministers over allegations of corruption

In line with reports, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which is the nation’s anti-corruption organisation, has extended invitations to eight former ministers who served in President Muhammadu Buhari’s previous administration. These individuals worked for the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

According to reports, these former ministers have been summoned for questioning in connection with allegations of corrupt behaviour.

These senior government officials were sent invitation letters that specifically asked them to explain how the funds that had been allotted to their respective ministries for specific projects during their terms had been used up. This request was included in the invitation letters that were sent to them.

Due to the fact that the anti-corruption agency’s investigations were already underway at the time, the letters were dispatched prior to Abdulrasheed Bawa’s suspension from his position as chairman of the commission.

According to reports, those who have been called include Pauline Tallen, a former minister of women’s affairs who was invited to participate in an investigation last week in connection with an alleged fraud involving N2 billion. Among the allegations is the claim that funds intended for the African First Lady Peace Mission Project were instead used for another purpose. Additionally, invitations have been extended to a total of seven additional former ministers.

It is essential to take note that the commission detained and arrested Sale Mamman, who served as President Buhari’s Minister of Power during the previous administration, in the past month. An investigation is being conducted into him at the moment because of his alleged participation in a fraud involving power projects that cost N22 billion.

There have been allegations that Senate President Godswill Akpabio revealed how senators voted for him, which has led to criticism of Akpabio.

Akpabio’s behaviour was deemed to be lacking in statesmanship by Deji Adeyanju, a sociopolitical activist.

Adeyanju has stated that Akpabio’s action of disclosing how senators voted may cause a rift within the Senate.

In a tweet, the activist for human rights recalled that in 2015, the then-current Senate President, Bukola Saraki, tore up the list.

According to Adeyanju, what Senate President Akpabio did to his colleagues by publicly exposing those who voted for or against him is not statesmanlike and will cause division within the Senate.

“He is the first President of the Senate to ever do such a thing. In 2015, after receiving the list from the Sergeant at Arms, Saraki promptly shredded it. ”

For the position of President of the Senate, the All Progressives Congress (APC) chose to back Akpabio as their candidate.

Tinubu requests thorough investigation in response to Kwara boat accident

Following the boat accident that resulted in numerous fatalities, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (BAT) has commiserated with the people of Kwara State and ordered a thorough investigation.

The Patigi Local Government Area (LGA) of Kwara on Monday saw a boat accident that resulted in at least 103 fatalities, according to the Kwara State Police Command.

In a statement released by his spokesperson, Abiodun Oladunjoye, Tinubu expressed his “deep sorrow” over the news of the tragic boat accident that claimed the lives of his people in Kwara State.

“The tragic accident was made worse by the fact that the victims were attendees at a wedding ceremony.

“Please accept my sincere sympathies and condolences to the families and friends of the tragic accident victims.

“I share the government’s and the residents’ sorrow over the accident in Kwara State. May every family member find solace, the President prayed.

President Tinubu promised that his administration would look into the difficulties of inland water transport in the nation to ensure that the issue of safety and operational standards are strictly adhered to while urging the Kwara State Government and pertinent Federal Government agencies to investigate the circumstances surrounding the boat accident.

“To identify the immediate and underlying causes of this unfortunate accident, the Kwara State Government and pertinent federal agencies should collaborate.

The President stated that victims’ families and survivors should also receive the immediate relief and support they need.

The deceased were all returning from a wedding in the neighbouring Niger State on Monday when the boat carrying them capsized, according to SP Ajayi Okasanmi of the Kwara Police.

Alhaji Mohammed Ibrahim Liman, the chairman of the Transition Implementation Committee in Patigi LGA, reported that about 110 passengers perished in the collision.

On the other hand, the governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, expressed sympathy to the residents of Patigi for the boat accident that claimed many lives while leaving some people unaccounted for.

The governor expressed his sadness in a statement on Tuesday regarding the reports of the boat accident involving several people, particularly residents of Ebu, Dzakan, Kpada, Kuchalu, and Sampi, all of which are located in Patigi.
