President Bola Tinubu is currently having a meeting with Umaro Sissoco Embalo, President of Guinea-Bissau and Chairman of the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government, in his home in Lagos.

The Lagos State Government will be setting up a joint working committee to resolve issues surrounding the recent demolition of some buildings in the Alaba International Market area and some other markets in Lagos.
The committee is to help clear some of the misunderstandings surrounding the demolition exercise. Members of the joint committee, the state government said, will include market leaders.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu made this known while speaking after a meeting with Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Ben Kalu, and some Igbo market leaders in Lagos on Friday.
Recall that some individuals have accused the Lagos government of targeting a certain section of the country in the recent demolition of some structures at the Alaba International Market.
Debunking the accusation, Sanwo-Olu said that some of the misconceptions surrounding the actions of the government have been cleared in the meeting, adding that the committee will go around to verify things.

“We just finished a meeting between myself and the Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma, and the Deputy Speaker Honourable Kalu and other market leaders of our various Igbo markets in Lagos, some community leaders, and also some state government officials.
“The meeting had gone on successfully, we discussed issues around a common interest, especially issues bordering on the recent demolition around Alaba Market where there has been a lot of wrong information and communication.
“Our conversation here this afternoon has cleared the air. We have seen that indeed there is a need for us to further collaborate. Where wrongs have been expressed we have corrected all of the issues and the views and we have jointly set up a small working committee that will go around, verify, and see things for ourselves and be able to put all of the negative information and media review out correctly,” Sanwo-Olu said.
Sanwo-Olu also appealed to the people to go about their normal business without any fear, adding that the government will always listen to them and allow everybody to do well and run their businesses.
Speaking, Governor Uzodimma thanked Sanwo-Olu for listening to the concerns they raised with him and his proactive action in setting up a committee to immediately look at the issues.
Alphonsus Komsol, a former member of the House of Representatives, has expressed faith in President Bola Tinubu’s capacity to transform Nigeria’s fortunes for the better in the least amount of time.

Nigerians are suffering as a result of the removal of fuel subsidies, according to human rights attorney Femi Falana (SAN), who has urged the Federal Government to act quickly.
During a Friday night appearance on Channels TV’s Politics Today programme, Falana made the call.
He pointed out that the regime of fuel subsidies is a result of the government’s negligence and broken promises to reform the oil industry.
The irresponsibility of the Nigerian ruling class, he said, “will require the government to act swiftly to address the suffering of the people, undeserved pains inflicted on the people.”
The human rights attorney pointed out that Muhammadu Buhari, the recently outgoing president, broke his promise to fix all refineries when he took office in 2015 by failing to do so.
The federal government was therefore urged by the human rights activist to act quickly to lessen the suffering of the populace.

Ademola Adeleke, the governor of Osun State, has issued an order requiring the immediate payment of pension benefits as specified in the template made public earlier this year.
Mallam Olawale Rasheed, the governor’s spokesman, stated this in a press release.

The Governor pointed out that the earlier-issued template for paying back unpaid salaries and pensions is still in effect, and he subsequently gave the State Head of Service instructions to speed up implementation by making sure that pension arrears are paid in accordance with the template.
“The template was created with an eye on gradually clearing the salary and pension debts,” the communiqué stated. This was done in recognition of the state’s financial situation, which has been well-documented and is widely known. Within a limited budget, our administration is focused on addressing the various needs of the state.
“However, our administration prioritises the welfare of all employees, including those who are in and out of service. I reiterate our dedication to ensuring the welfare of our pensioners, who are senior citizens. I can assure our pensioners that they will not and cannot be forgotten because the phased payments are a standby directive.
Adeleke added that his administration is almost finished with a plan to enrol the pensioners in the public health insurance programme in order to take care of their medical requirements.
“Our administration is making great efforts to enrol pensioners in health insurance. Senior citizens require ongoing medical care. We believe enrolling them is the best course of action because it will lessen the burden of care during their retirement.
“We are addressing the specifics. We will release it for immediate implementation once it is finished, the governor promised.

The Gombe State Police Command reported on Friday that it had shot down a suspected member of an armed robbery gang in a gun duel, arrested three other gang members, and wounded six more.
According to Sharif Saad, the command’s deputy police public relations officer, the control room was informed that a group of notorious armed robbers who were known for terrorising residents of Gombe metropolis, particularly those in the Arawa, Malam inna, and Nayi nawa quarters of the state, were currently in the Arawa quarters.
The alleged robbers entered Alhaji Gidado Muhammad Sani’s home in Arawa Quarters, shooting erratically while robbing them of their valuable property, according to part of the statement. Mohammed Abdullahi, Sani’s security guard, sustained injuries to his head, left hand, and back from the robbers.
“On sighting the operatives, the armed robbers engaged them in a gun duel and one of the deadly robbers, Alias Albaru, was neutralised, while Adamu Usman, alias Bali, 22; Mustapha Abdullahi, alias Jammaye, 22; and Abdullahi Hussaini, alias Danbasi, 21, were arrested and six others on the run with suspected bullet wounds. As efforts are made to apprehend the evading suspects, some of the exhibits stolen from the victims were recovered.

The Rivers State Police Command has reported that during separate raids on militant camps and kidnapper hideouts in some areas of the state, its men were able to free a victim of kidnapping and recover weapons and ammunition.
At a press conference on Friday in Port Harcourt, the state’s police commissioner, Emeka Nwonyi, revealed this.
The police combed a forest close to China Bridge on Wednesday, according to Nwonyi, with the aid of a vigilante, and a kidnapped woman was freed.
“She (the victim) stated that she was abducted on June 26, 2023, at around 1950 hours along Salvation Ministry Road in Rumuosi Choba, Port Harcourt, while driving her Lexus 330 SUV, whose registration number is currently unknown, from her shop to the house. Her family has been reunited with her. The hoodlums are still being sought after and apprehended.

One locally made pistol with one round of live ammunition, an LG plasma television, two Android phones, one Itel phone, and a woman’s handbag were all found during the search of the keke bus, the man claimed.

The Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) candidate for governor on March 18th, Hon. Oladipupo Adebutu, was accused of electoral fraud, according to the Ogun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and it was deemed the most honourable for him to submit to security agencies.
The party urged Adebutu to cease giving his supporters false optimism and insisted that his alleged atrocities during the previous election would be investigated thoroughly and tried in the appropriate court of law to serve as a deterrence to others.
Ogun APC was responding to a statement in the media attributed to Adebutu, in which he highlighted concerns about the most recent gubernatorial election in the state, including the involvement of a former governor of the state, Gbenga Daniel, among others.
The party claimed in a statement provided to newsmen in Abeokuta, the state capital, and signed by the assistant publicity secretary of the party in the state, Olusola Ogunsanya Blessed, that the statement released by Adebutu was laced with an intent to conceal some atrocities and alter the truth.
The PDP chairman and Daniel must have been embarrassed by the exposure of their alleged shenanigans and plot during the last general election, the party asserted, going by the tone of Adebutu’s remark.
According to the statement, “While Adebutu, in his cognitively underdeveloped piece dripping with vile abuse, failed miserably to defend the fact that Gbenga Daniel worked for him and his party, the PDP, and betrayed the party that gave him a ticket and even sponsored him to become a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, he tried to be clever by half by denying the allegation of bribery levelled against the former Ogun Governor with overw
“For every astute political observer, it is crystal clear that Adebutu and Daniel were seriously embarrassed by the exposure of their atrocities in the public glare, and so the bribery, criminal conspiracy, and money laundering suspect currently hibernating in a foreign country resorted to defending the indefensible and further exposing the astounding degree of moral decadence and perfidy that defines their relationship.”Despite his age, Adebutu’s pattern of defence, in which he called Daniel “a very rich man in his own right,” clearly reveals how naive he is. “On the subject of performance and the reelection of Governor Dapo Abiodun, it is surprising that a man like Oladipupo Adebutu, who is well known for being utterly slothful and fatally afflicted with mental laziness, could accuse any government of non-performance and corruption, when he lacks the intellectual fortitude to conduct a thorough evaluation of government policies and activities,” the author writes.
The statement also charged Adebutu with shamelessly undermining the democratic process by allegedly engaging in money laundering and electoral malpractices.
Insisting Adebutu to muster the fortitude to return home to face justice, it went on to say that Governor Dapo Abiodun had the support of the people and had now settled into governing.

The National Universities Commission’s Core Curriculum Minimum Academic Standards have been rejected by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). These standards were prepared by the National Universities Commission.
According to the union, it is a nightmare, a danger to receiving a high-quality education at a university, and an infringement on the authority of the university Senate in Nigerian universities.
Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, the national president of ASUU, issued a statement on Friday in which he expressed his opinion that it was inexplicable that NUC pre-packaged 70 percent of CCMAS contents were being imposed on the Nigerian University System. In the statement, he said that university Senates, which are statutorily responsible for academic programme development, were left to work on only 30 percent of the content.
According to the statement, there were rising worries about the various flaws and fundamental deficiencies that were present in the CCMAS documents.
According to the statement, “ASUU is not uninformed that it is within the remit of the NUC to set academic standards and ensure quality in the NUS.” According to the Education (National Minimum Standards and Establishment of Institutions) Act, Cap. E3, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004, the National Universities Commission (NUC) is “enjoined to lay down the minimum standards for all universities and other degree awarding institutions in the Federation and conduct the accreditation of their degrees and other academic awards.”
It was pointed out that the process of establishing the standard is just as significant, if not more important, than the actual “minimum standards” that are produced.
ASUU stated that the NUC has recently, through some hazy procedures, churned out CCMAS documents containing 70% of the curricular contents in 17 academic fields with little or no input from the universities, highlighting the fact that the academic disciplines covered are as follows: administration and management, agriculture, allied health sciences, architecture, arts, basic medical sciences, computing, communication and media studies, education, engineering and technology, environmental sciences, laguage studies, and legal studies. ASUU further stated that
It was revealed that many university administrators, despite being unsatisfied, were hesitating to make public remarks on CCMAS, and it was said that several university Senates did not disguise their unhappiness with the continued efforts by the NUC to impose CCMAS on Nigerian universities. However, it was stated that many university administrators were hesitating to make public comments on CCMAS.
It was pointed out that the CCMAS documents are defective in both the method and the content, and it was argued that the CCMAS is a nightmare model of curriculum reengineering as an aberration to the Nigerian University System. There is no basis for the 70% “untouchable CCMAS,” which cannot withstand the test of serious scrutiny from university Senates.
It was suggested that the NUC should encourage universities, similar to what is currently being done by the University of Ibadan, to propose innovations for the review of their programmes. It was also suggested that proposals from across universities should then be sieved and synthesised by more competent expert teams in order to review the existing BMAS documents and/or create new ones as necessary.
It was stated that the bottom-up strategy, in contrast to the top-bottom model or the “take-it-or-leave-it” paradigm of the CCMAS, is what makes this situation unique.
