President Bola Tinubu has been congratulated on becoming the Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States by Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Governor of Lagos State.

In a statement dated July 10, 2023 and signed by Gboyega Akosile, the chief press secretary for Tinubu, Sanwo-Olu referred to the event that occurred at the 63rd Ordinary Session on Sunday in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau, as a significant affirmation of Nigeria’s leadership in the West African subregion and the African continent.

He went on to say that the faith that his fellow members had in President Tinubu to lead the significant alliance will show up in efficient cooperation and workable solutions to the problems of transnational security, sustainable development, and economic progress.

On Monday, Shina Peller, a former member of the House of Representatives from the Iseyin/Itesiwaju/Kajola/Iwajowa Federal constituency, congratulated President Bola Tinubu on becoming the Economic Community of West African States chairman.

Peller welcomed the development and highlighted Nigeria’s economic and political leadership in Africa in a statement on his verified social media accounts.

He said Tinubu’s election as ECOWAS chairman is a tribute to Nigeria’s founding fathers, who envisioned a Nigeria for Africa, not only Nigerians.
“President Tinubu’s emergence presents a beam of renewed hope for the African continent,” remarked Peller. His administration will revolutionize Nigeria and Africa. Our founding fathers always envisioned a Nigeria for Africa, solidifying our economic and political supremacy in Africa.

Approximately $5 billion in Abacha loot was recovered by the administrations of Olusegun Obasanjo, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, Goodluck Jonathan, and Muhammadu Buhari. The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the disclosure of the spending information.

The government of President Bola Tinubu was mandated by the court to make public the sums that General Sani Abacha stole from Nigeria.

Additionally, it stated that the public should be informed of all agreements signed by the administrations of former presidents Obasanjo, Yar’Adua, Jonathan, and Buhari, as well as the total amount of Abacha loot recovered.

This decision was made by Justice James Kolawole Omotosho in response to a Freedom of Information lawsuit brought by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP).

The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Finance, is hereby ordered to provide SERAP with the full spending details of approximately $5 billion in Abacha loot within seven days of this judgement, Justice Omotosho said in reading the judgement. “In the final analysis, the application by SERAP is meritorious,” she said.

Atiku’s aide warns Tinubu supporters not to interfere with activities of election court

Following their recent protest march at the European Union headquarters in Abuja in response to the publication of the European Union Observer Mission (EU-EOM) report, supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu have been warned to avoid the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC) and not try to interfere with the proceedings.

The warning was given in a statement released on Sunday by Phrank Shaibu, the Special Assistant on Public Communication to PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar.

The warning, according to him, became urgent after what he perceived to be a sponsored protest at the EU office following the publication of the EU-EOM report, which stated that the 2023 elections would be marred by irregularities.

The Tinubu government has demonstrated a clear disregard for the truth by picketing the EU office, so Shaibu said: “We seize this opportunity to warn them against interfering with the election tribunal’s proceedings.

“Recall that in 1999, when the late renowned attorney Chief Gani Fawehinmi sued Tinubu for forging school transcripts, thugs were hired to cause demonstrations outside the courthouse. Similarly, thugs were sponsored to protest at Tinubu’s trial before the Code of Conduct Tribunal in an effort to intimidate the court system.

We find it odd that the same security agencies that have been issuing statements prohibiting protests were oddly available to provide cover for sponsored pro-government protesters to picket the EU office. As the tribunal proceedings come to a close, we sound a warning to the security agencies to be on guard. The whole world is on guard.

Shaibu further asserted in the statement that in the first 40 days of Tinubu’s presidency, poverty had gotten worse and inflation had shot through the roof.

All Progressives Congress (APC) state chapters and the national secretariat have been excluded from the selection process for ministerial nominees because President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected to submit his nominations to the National Assembly this week or next week.

According to news reports, Tinunu and governors must submit the names of individuals nominated as ministers or commissioners within 60 days of taking the oath of office for confirmation by the Senate or state House of Assembly under the new amendment to the 1999 Constitution that former President Muhammadu Buhari signed into law.

On May 29, President Tinubu took the oath of office, marking his 42nd day in office.

The former governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, was one of the former governors who may have been pencilled in to be on the final list, according to The Guardian. Others include former governors Nyesom Wike (Rivers), Abdullahi Ganduje (Kano), Atiku Bagudu (Kebbi), Muhammad Badaru Abubakar (Jigawa), and Abdullahi Ganduje (Kano).

However, it was heard that Senator Gbenga Daniel, a former governor of Ogun State, is preferred over Senator Ibikunle Amosun for the ministerial list, and Kayode Fayemi, a former governor of Ekiti State, is also being considered for the position of foreign affairs minister.

In contrast to the losses caused by fraudulent banking activities in Q4, 2022, the data indicated a decline in losses.

In Q4 2022, N3.18 billion was lost to fraudsters across banking platforms, according to FITC. This means that losses decreased by 85.13 percent in Q1 2023.

The FITC data also showed that the total amount involved in fraud cases fell by 79.44 percent in Q1 2023 compared to Q4 2022, from N12.58 billion to N2.59 billion.

Additionally, there were 14.07% fewer reported fraud cases overall in Q1 2023.

In comparison to the 14,609 cases recorded in the previous quarter, a total of 12,553 cases were reported in the first quarter of this year.

Additionally, it was noted that, in line with the pattern from the previous quarter, fraud was primarily committed via mobile, computer/web, and point-of-sale.

According to the report, “For the first quarter of 2023 under review, an analysis of the magnitude-based ranking of fraud categories shows that mobile fraud has the highest ranking, accounting for N1.1bn (42.72%), and is followed by the computer/web fraud category at N646m (24.99%). PoS fraud totaling N450 million (17.31%) and fraudulent withdrawals totaling N139 million (5.36%) came next.

The data also showed that mobile fraud accounted for 34.07 percent of the total amount lost in Q1, 2023, followed by computer/web fraud at 27.69 percent, at N130 million, and fraudulent withdrawals at 24.72 percent, at N116 million.

Community of Anambra forbids youth activities, levies

The residents of the Isuaniocha community, which is located in the Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State, have come to the conclusion that it is in everyone’s best interest for the community as a whole as well as their own personal well-being to put an end to the five-year conflict that has been wreaking havoc on their lives.

On Sunday, the community held a general meeting in which the elders, women, youths, and stakeholders took part. As part of the discussion, the community decided to prohibit all activities involving youths as well as the collection of levies in the various forests in the area. This was done in an effort to maintain peace and order.

After the meeting, the Chairman of Umulem town, which is one of the towns in the community, Chief Donatus Anyaegbunem, explained to the journalists that the decision had been made by the community after they realized that it was the primary cause of the ongoing crisis in the region.

Anyaegbunem made the observation that the entire community descended from a single parent and that there was no reason for the situation to have deteriorated to the point where it would be necessary for people to leave the town.

He stated that “the decision was taken so that all aggrieved and concerned persons will come out and proffer the way forward having agreed that peace was the best option for the overall interest of the entire community.” He also said that “the decision was taken so that all aggrieved and concerned persons will come out and proffer the way forward.”

“We have therefore established a Peace committee with the mandate of speaking with all parties involved in the five-year-long crises and returning with recommendations aimed at ensuring enduring peace in Isuaniocha. This committee has been given the responsibility of speaking with all parties involved in the crises.

“Those who were already paying rent and levies to private individuals were instructed to cease doing so immediately until all issues are resolved,” said the directive.

“The elders and Ndi Ozor set the tone for the peace talks as they opened the floor for all persons who were aggrieved and concerned to come out and proffer a way forward having agreed that peace was the best option for the overall interest of the entire Community.”

The people of Isuaniocha used the medium to send a stern warning to all persons and individuals from neighboring communities who were intruding and fanning the ember of crises in Isuaniocha, urging them to stop doing so from this point forward.

Chief Obuka Okoye from Otoko village and Luise Ndubuife made an appeal to those whose homes and means of livelihood were destroyed to forgive those involved in the destruction of their property in the interest of maintaining peace in the community and fostering its economic growth.

One of the victims of the crises, Mr. Madiegbuna Igboanyia, recounted the trauma that some of them went through in the previous five years, and he called on the elders to remove sentiment and ensure that the truth is said at all times, as this is the only tool that can bring about lasting peace.

Another victim, Paulinus Onyeagolu, whose family houses were destroyed and property looted, stated that they decided to initiate the peace process in order to put an end to all of the issues that do nobody any good. Paulinus Onyeagolu’s family houses and property were both destroyed during the conflict.

Chukwudi Onuorah, Chairman of the Ozor-in-Council in Isuaniocha, stated that this was the first time that the entire community was coming together to embrace peace. He also expressed the hope that every matter would be resolved so that indigenes and residents will no longer have a course to run helter-skelter.

He appealed to the parents in the community, saying that they should encourage their children, young people, and relatives to refrain from committing any further attacks because actions of this nature could undermine the progress that has been made toward establishing peace.

The elders and Ozor-in-Council are responsible for selecting members for the Peace Committee. These members include the chairmen and secretaries of each of the villages, as well as notable upright women leaders and other notable upright persons.

Since the outbreak of the crises in 2018, which resulted in the loss of some lives and the destruction of property, this was the first time that the entire population had sat down together to talk about it.

Ikhine, who was also a former PDP candidate for governor of Edo State, stated in a letter of resignation addressed to the party’s chairman and dated July 8, 2023, that he had had the honor of serving the party for the past 24 years. The letter was made available to journalists on Sunday.

“It has been a great honor to contribute to the development and success of this party over the years, with the People Democratic Party recording outstanding results from my Ward throughout the 24 years of working with you,” the letter’s opening line reads.

“My commitment to the people of Ward 7, Esan-West Local Government, and the people of Edo remains firm and resolute to keep serving them in another capacity,” he added.

Ikhine gave reasons on Sunday for leaving the PDP, citing the party’s perpetual impasse that pits the Obaseki group against the legacy group as a major factor. He also claimed that it would be challenging to fulfill his desire to serve his community.

He added that he had the vision to bring the state and its citizens out of obscurity and that it would be wrong to remain in the PDP after having supported the APC in the previous election and helped Bola Tinubu win the presidency.

He refuted the assertion that he received $1 million to resign in support of Obaseki in 2019, noting that he had supported the governor because he believed Obaseki had a good plan for the state.

He added that rumors that the ticket had been zoned to Edo South prevented him from leaving the party.

The PDP’s deadlock, he claimed, was a major contributing factor in his decision to leave the party because he didn’t believe he could accomplish his goals in the state as long as Obaseki and the legacy group were still at odds. I’m moving 30% of the PDP’s membership over to the APC.
