Former Nigerian minister Uche Ogah laments Joe Irukwu’s passing at 89

Professor Joe Irukwu (CFR), the former president general of the leading Igbo socio-cultural organisation, passed away. The former minister of state for mines and steel development, Dr. Uchechukwu Ogah, expressed his sorrow.

Ogah referred to the late Irukwu as a nationalist, legal luminary, and insurance guru in a condolence message he provided to journalists in Umuahia, Abia State.

In addition to founding the African Development Insurance Company and serving as the forerunner Managing Director of Nigeria Reinsurance Corporation, the deceased made significant contributions to the public and private sectors of the Nigerian economy, according to him.

Professor Irukwu’s passing was characterised by the ex-minister as a significant blow that has left a gaping hole that will be challenging to fill.

Death is a necessary end for all mortals, but for a man like Dee Ogboo, who came, saw, and conquered in all facets of human endeavour, death is not a necessary end.

Ogah, however, joined all people of goodwill to express sympathy to the Irukwu family, the residents of Amokwe Item in Bende Local Government Area of Abia State, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), and the insurance industry on the passing of this pan-African, real Nigerian statesman, and illustrious son of Abia State on behalf of his family.

“To the Irukwus: Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. I implore you to put your faith in God, build on the traditions that Prof. Irukwu established, and pray for God to accept the soul of this revered figure and grant him eternal rest. Dr. Ogah also added Laa Nke Oma Dee Ogboo.

Six students receive a score of 01 in NECO’s common entry results

In the National Examinations Council’s 202: National Common Entrance Examinations, a total of six individuals received a score of 1.

In Abuja on Wednesday, Andrew Adejo, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education, disclosed this while providing a score breakdown.

According to Adejo, “A total of (72,865) kids registered compared to 71,738 for 2022, with Taraba having the fewest (102), and Lagos State having the highest (18,644). Sixty nine thousand, eight hundred and twenty nine (69,829) students took the test; 38,801 female registrants compared to 34,064 male registrants shows that we are closing the gender gap

3,036 students were not present, 76 students received the maximum grade of 203, and six students received the lowest grade of one.

“I want to thank everyone who helped make today possible, starting with the examination council, the monitors, markers, and pressmen who were present. The exam’s smooth operation shows that NECO is making improvements to the way it delivers its exams.

As you are all aware, the majority of parents in the nation now turn to our Federal Unity Colleges as their first choice. The federal government is working hard to create better circumstances for successful teaching and learning in our schools, notwithstanding the current issues we face with infrastructural development, feeding, and teacher quality.

Tribunal: Ex-deputy governor of Borno Dibal testifies in court on behalf of Sanwo-Olu

Adamu Shettima Yuguda Dibal, the former deputy governor of Borno State, spoke before the Lagos State Election Petition Tribunal on Tuesday. He presided over the most recent APC governorship primary in Lagos State.

Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the APC’s governorship candidate for the general elections in 2023, won the primary poll.

Sanwo-Olu’s bid for reelection as the state governor is being opposed by the Peoples Democratic Party and its governorship candidate for the March 18 governorship election.

Dibal was escorted in to testify by Dr. Obafemi Hamzat and Mr. Bode Olanipekun (SAN), attorneys for Sanwo-Olu.

 

The Lagos State Chairman of the APC, Mr. Cornelius Ojelabi, did not violate any electoral laws when he alerted the Lagos State Office of INEC in writing of the party’s primary election in Lagos State, according to Dibal, who testified before the tribunal presided over by Justice Arum Ashom.

If Ojelabi was the national chairperson of the APC on May 24, 2022, when he sent the letter, Mr. Clement Onwuenwunor (SAN), counsel to the PDP governorship candidate Mr. Abdulazeez Adediran (also known as Jandor), questioned the witness during cross-examination.

The witness said “no” to the question.

The witness testified in court that the National Working Committee (NWC) of the APC established the state committees that carried out the primary election in all 36 states.

The chieftain claimed that Ojelabi was merely informing the INEC office that the NWC had formed a five-member committee to conduct the primary election in Lagos State, of which he was the Chairman, during cross-examination by APC counsel Mr. Babatunde Ogala (SAN) after being shown the aforementioned letter, which had been admitted as an exhibit before the tribunal.

The witness added that he submitted a report on the primary election to the APC’s national secretariat following the process.

In response to INEC’s attorney, Mr. Adetunji Oyeyipo (SAN), the witness stated that officials from INEC’s head office and Lagos office were present for the primary poll and signed a report on its conduct.

The Labour Party and its candidate, Mr. Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, did not have a lawyer cross-examine them.

The tribunal, presided over by Justice Arum Ashom, subsequently released the witness and ordered the APC to present its case on July 12.

Adediran said in the appeal that the governor had submitted a fake West African school diploma to INEC, the Independent National Electoral Commission.

Adediran further alleged that Hazmat’s INEC Nomination Form EC9 was missing an oath declaration.

Sanwo-Olu and Hamzat’s nominations by the APC were in violation of the Electoral Act, he continued.

On July 4, Adediran, who finished third in the governor’s race, closed his case by providing both oral and written evidence.

In a statement headlined “Plateau killings: We must break this cycle of violence,” the President expressed sadness and anguish over the occurrence and condemned the deaths in Mangu and many locations in Benue State.

A major result of ongoing conflict is always the unfortunate loss of innocent life, according to the President who called the festering retaliation strikes “necessary” and “avoidable.”

The statement said that, “while reiterating his government’s strong determination to wipe out violent crimes and all sorts of criminalities everywhere in Nigeria, the President has urged security services to fish out the masterminds of the despicable deeds to face the full force of law.”

Dr. Blaise Ijebor, director of risk management at the Central Bank of Nigeria, has urged risk managers to stay on top of developments that could be dangerous for their company.

Hyacinth Alia, the governor of Benue State, established an asset recovery committee. On Tuesday, the group invaded the former governor Samuel Ortom’s auto repair shop with towing vehicles and removed various automobiles.

Alia was revealed that the previous governor reportedly misappropriated 29 government vehicles through the use of his chief press secretary, Kula Tersoo.

In a statement, Tersoo had added, “The case of the Government House is particularly pitiable with vandalized furniture, window blinds, electronics and other household goods.

This is in addition to the removal of all vehicles from the governor’s office, including an ambulance and a press bus.

The governor’s office’s 29 vehicles, according to the most recent tally, are still missing.

The asset recovery committee raided Ortom’s auto shop on Tuesday afternoon, but the workers inside resisted them, a source told our correspondent on Tuesday.

“Governor Alia has now sent towing trucks to ex-Governor Ortom’s auto workshop to cart away automobiles after attempts to drive them away failed,” Iortyom stated.

You may remember that Benson Abounu, Ortom’s deputy, and they obtained a court injunction preventing the asset recovery committee from pursuing them.

Ortom and Abounu urged the court to establish “whether property properly awarded to them as entitlements and pay can be classified as state government assets” in their lawsuit, MHC/199/2023, which was filed through their attorney, Douglas Pepe (SAN).

They ask the court to “determine whether or not the executive actions and decisions of the Governor and Government of Benue State taken by Ortom and Abounu and the State Executive Council, in good faith before May 29th, 2023, were valid under the combined effect of sections 5(2), 44, and 318(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).”

As part of their request, the former governor and his deputy seek the court to decide “whether or not the Governor of Benue State is not bound by the constitutional approvals given by his predecessor.”

They claim that Alia’s asset recovery committee is powerless to affect their right to possession of any property that has been “vested in them by the Benue State Government at all relevant times or without following due process.”

Gov. Yusuf wants TETFund interventions for Kano universities

More Tertiary Education Trust Fund intervention projects are needed at the Yusuf Maitama Sule University and the Kano University of Science and Technology in Wudil, according to Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State.

Yusuf made the call while paying Sonny Echono, the Executive Secretary of the TETFund, a courtesy visit in Abuja. He emphasized the importance of the Kano government and the fund working closely together to ensure better education delivery.

“The goal of my visit is to ensure that the Kano government and TETFund will continue to work together on projects and provide other forms of educational support to these two universities.

However, he added, “As far as we are concerned, these two universities are closed to our heart.” “Of course, my predecessor established the third university in the state.

He praised the TETFund for its many infrastructure initiatives in tertiary institutions all over the nation.

The governor requested support from TETFund in particular for the two universities’ need for additional facilities, staff training and retraining, and flood control at Kano University of Science and Technology, Wudil.

“First and foremost, we are here to express our gratitude to the management for the projects and intervention programs being carried out in the two universities.

“Specifically, I am more interested in infrastructure development because without classrooms, hostels, libraries, or other facilities, the system as a whole would collapse.

Therefore, ensuring the provision of infrastructures is crucial for any university or other institution of higher learning.

“If you look at the majority of universities in the nation, they wouldn’t have the educational facilities they do now without the help of TETFund.

Kano was described by Echono as a center of learning as well as commerce, with over a dozen universities located there.

“TETFund intervenes in three institutions—colleges of education, polytechnics, and universities—within a state.

“The board of Trustees imposed restrictions on a number of institutions in order to ensure that we concentrate resources and achieve meaningful impact.

Therefore, we do not advise states to simply set up numerous institutions with the sole purpose of directing TETFund intervention.

It actually enlists two institutions of a similar type at once, and even then, I mean either two universities, two polytechnics, or two colleges of education.

“In order to comply with our law’s requirement that all states be treated equally, we must make sure that no state is given preferential treatment over another. States with multiple institutions actually switch between them, he said.
