Senator David Umahi, who serves as the National Assembly’s Deputy Senate Leader, is getting ready to retire.

Why Senator Umahi is stepping down from his position.

His alleged resignation is brought on by his potential appointment and nomination to the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s cabinet as a minister.

Umahi, who previously served as the governor of Ebonyi State and currently represents Ebonyi South Senatorial District in the National Assembly, is a prominent member of the APC, which is currently in power.

The former governor of Kano State, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, has received support from the Coalition of North-Central Leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress in the race to succeed Senator Abdullahi Adamu, the party’s outgoing national chairman.

The change occurs just two days after the 73-year-old lawmaker received a similar endorsement from APC chairmen from seven North-West states at a meeting in Kaduna.

There are conflicting opinions among party members and supporters of the ruling party regarding the supposed endorsement of Ganduje as the chosen candidate by President Bola Tinubu and the APC governors.

While some party leaders believed the new national chairman should come from Nasarawa State in accordance with the APC’s zoning system, others supported the selection of the former Kano governor.

Speaking to journalists on Thursday in Abuja, the coalition’s convener, Okpokwu Ogenyi, said that although the current zoning mechanism gives the position to their zone, the APC North-Central leaders have agreed to give Ganduje the position instead.

“We, the people of North Central, have held the national chairperson positions of all the countries ruling parties and have performed well in terms of party management,” he declared. We are pleased to report that the party won the most recent residential election under the leadership of a chairman from the zone.

“Today, our father, who served as the APC’s National Chairman, resigned from his job, leaving the position open. As you may be aware, no government can function in a vacuum, so our party needs a capable leader to lead it.

“On this point, we firmly support Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje’s election as national chairman of our wonderful Party, the APC. Abdullahi Ganduje is a party animal who has made a name for himself as a highly esteemed scholar.

One could be tempted to wonder, as North Central youth, why we shouldn’t demand that the position be kept in the zone. The fact is that we have made our fair share of contributions and would like to see other zones given the chance to take part in Party management. When it comes to the interests of the country, we in the North Central region are far beyond trivialities, avarice, and selfishness.

An attempt by the Senate to have Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, released from custody has been rejected.

The motion, put forth by Senator Osita Izunaso (Imo West), sought to address the South-East’s ongoing sit-at-home order, which is frequently enforced by unidentified gunmen.

The lawmaker stated that the senators were aware that thousands of innocent people had died since the action began and that properties worth more than a trillion dollars had been destroyed, which had caused investors to flee the area, in the motion co-sponsored by other lawmakers from the South-East.

He declared, “The South-East’s sit-at-home civil disobedience actions have resulted in the disruption/destruction of economic activities and immeasurable financial losses for businesses, workers, and the local economy. Because productivity and income fall when people are compelled to stay at home and businesses are kept closed, this has an impact on people’s livelihoods and the expansion of the economy.

“The “sit-at-home” demonstrations interfere with students’ education, causing missed classes and delays in academic progress. Disturbed that the disruption of vital public services, like healthcare, transportation, and waste disposal, continues to have a serious impact during “sit-at-home” protests and negatively affects the well-being and safety of the general population living in the South-East. And such protracted disruptions have long-term effects on students’ learning outcomes and educational development.

A sit-at-home order was issued by IPOB in August 2021 for every Monday in the South-East to protest Kanu’s ongoing detention. The separatist group ultimately revoked the directive.

Even though the IPOB faction led by Kanu has suspended the exercise, Simon Ekpa, the leader of a faction, has continued to issue sit-at-home orders in the area.

Enugu, Ebonyi, Imo, Abia, and Anambra residents have frequently been killed, injured, and attacked by gunmen enforcing the civil order for leaving their homes on Mondays and other days in violation of the order.
