President Bola Tinubu has received praise from female Nasarawa State stakeholders for naming nine women as ministers.

On Thursday, the women and a few young people participated in a solidarity march from Lafia City Hall to the state ministry for local government and chieftaincy affairs.

Speaking on behalf of the organisation, Mrs. Habiba Balarabe-Suleiman, Director-General, Nasarawa State Human Capital Development Agency, noted that President Tinubu’s nomination of nine women as minister designates was unparalleled in the nation’s history.

Given their background and antecedents, Balarabe-Suleiman expressed confidence that all the women appointed will perform well and contribute to the president’s theme of “renew hope.”

She also urged the president to give the women sensitive portfolios so they could express themselves in keeping with their individual professions.

The spokesperson notably complimented Tinubu for selecting Nasarawa State native Mrs. Imaan Suleiman as his ministerial nominee.

Suleiman, according to her, would bring honour to the state and help the president fulfil his promises to Nigerians during the campaign.

She described the nominee for the ministerial position as “an amazon with potential, who does not shy away from responsibility.”

Balarabe-Suleiman also praised Gov. Abdullahi Sule for his administration’s pro-women stance and for encouraging one of them to be chosen as a state minister.

The Head of Service for the State, Abigail Waya, stated that the president has shown his commitment to advancing everyone in his government by nominating nine women.

On Thursday, August 3, 2023, in Katsina State, First Lady of Nigeria Senator Oluremi Tinubu paid a visit to former President Muhammadu Buhari at his Daura home.

Hajia Nana Shettima, the vice president’s wife, accompanied Tinubu on the visit.

According to Tinubu, the purpose of the visit was to check on the former president and express gratitude for his constant fatherly support. She prayed that she would live a long time, be healthy, and receive more help from him.

Hajia Dikko Radda, the wife of the governor of Katsina State, and Hajia Nasir Daura, the speaker of the Katsina State House of Assembly, among other APC women chieftains in the State, were also there with the First Lady.

Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo addressed Thursday why he missed the APC national caucus meeting in Abuja.

On Wednesday, APC leaders and members met at the State House in Abuja without ex-President Muhammadu Buhari or Osinbajo.

The two men missed Thursday’s NEC meeting in Abuja’s Transcorp Hilton Hotel.

On Wednesday, his media assistant, Garba Shehu, said the former president skipped the meeting owing to a prior engagement.

According to his spokesman, Osinbajo was out of Nigeria for long-standing engagements at the time of the meeting.

The statement read: “In a letter of apology for his absence submitted to the Acting Chairman of the party (Abubakar Kyari), the former VP indicated that he was already abroad on long-term engagements when he received the invitation to the meeting.

“He had actually cancelled some of his activities abroad to be available for the two party caucus sessions that had to be postponed owing to exigencies.

He pledged his loyalty to the party and offered to attend future meetings and events.

Says workers should focus efforts on making the best use of fuel subsidy savings

The Christian Association of Nigeria urged Nigerians on Thursday to be patient with President Bola Tinubu and give him time to turn the country around.

The group praised Tinubu for acting quickly to prevent the strike that the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress had threatened to call in protest of the elimination of fuel subsidies.

The CAN informed the NLC and TUC that if there was ever a need for a call to action, it should be for the responsible and sensible use of the money that would have otherwise been used to subsidise petrol.

The problems were brought up at a news conference in Abuja by Methodist Bishop of the Ikeja Diocese and Chairman of the Lagos State Chapter of CAN, Stephen Adegbite.

The fuel subsidy, which he called “a misadventure favouring the rich and politically connected,” got worse, he claimed, when neighbours in the vicinity and smugglers began reaping lavish rewards at the expense of the populace.

He praised Tinubu’s decision to invite the heads of the NLC and TUC for a secret meeting that led to a truce and put a stop to the widespread protest.

The President’s move, according to him, demonstrated that he is a leader who listens and is concerned with achieving goals that are in the best interests of the country.

In order to fix Nigeria once and for all, Adegbite pleaded for Nigerians to give the President a chance.

“Since President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s new administration assumed office on May 29, 2023, I have closely observed the socioeconomic events in our nation,” he declared.

“The President had, upon taking office, made his now-famous ‘fuel subsidy is gone’ proclamation in his inauguration speech, and since then, fuel prices have twice increased in line with the demands of the market.

“Most Nigerians agreed that the action he took was one that was necessary. It became more and more clear that the subsidy system was not helping the people it was intended to help.

Following Tinubu’s involvement, the NLC confirms the strike has been suspended.
The truth is that the gasoline subsidy misadventure was profitable for the wealthy, the politically connected, and even worse, our regional neighbours and smugglers who had luxurious returns at the expense of the populace.

“Basically, neither the primary nor secondary beneficiaries of the subsidy were the masses who were intended to benefit from it, but the saddest thing is that the populace has been duped into thinking that the subsidy fraud was in their interest.

In light of this, I applaud President Tinubu for calling for follow-up talks with the leaders of the NLC and TUC after organised labour decided to hold protest marches in spite of his statewide broadcast.

Adegbite claimed that Tinubu is a president who listens and who has clarified issues for the NLC and TUC leaders.

“I find it reassuring,” he said, “that he utilised the occasion to provide clarity on a number of things labour leaders believed were not plain enough.

This, in my opinion, proves that our President is attentive and concerned with achieving goals that are in the interest of the country.

Adegbite stated that labour brought up the refineries in its criticism of President Tinubu’s recent nationwide broadcast and that its leaders had heard that the Port Harcourt refineries will be operational by December 2023.

He stated that the NLC should be aware that all four of the nation’s refineries were being renovated as part of a deal made by the previous administration of Muhammadu Buhari with various timetables.

Adegbite stated, “So it is obvious that there is a plan in place to assure local petroleum refining. The decision by labour to halt its protest marches is encouraging.

“So my advice to NLC and TUC is that if there is a need for a call to action, it should be for the sensible and responsible use of the funds that would have otherwise been used to subsidise fuel,”

The state CAN chairman stated, “We can’t be moaning about a lack of social infrastructure and facilities, as well as poor wages for civil officials, while at the same time being hostile to measures to improve the quality and availability of same.”

At the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has halted taxi operations.

Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at FAAN Abdullahi Yakubu-Funtua recently revealed this.

According to FAAN, the ban, which started on Thursday, was as a result of an ongoing factional issue among the NAIA car rental companies.

FAAN advised airport users to use other modes of transportation as a result.

The statement reads, “This is due to the unresolved factional conflict among the automobile rental providers.”

On Thursday, some APC leaders in Rivers State claimed that Nyesom Wike, a former governor of the state, joined the group to preserve his political future.

They also pointed out that the former minister of state for education wasn’t to be commended for the party’s expansion in the state.

The Rivers State chieftains claimed in a statement released to our correspondent in Abuja on behalf of the party leaders that the formation and growth of the APC in the state required “the efforts of several loyal members, who mostly lost their lives in the struggle to ensure a solid party structure in the state.” Darlington Nwajulu is the state publicity secretary of the APC in Rivers State.

The party leaders also stated that it was unfair for President Bola Tinubu to reward a man for running the party’s affairs while the group was subjected to numerous attacks in the state.

“We closed the significant gap left by the 2015 presidential election with a growth of 23.8% from 2015 to 2019.” Then, in Rivers State, the APC received an additional 80,881 votes in favour of winning the 2023 presidential election.

“The question is, where is Wike’s helping hand from his time as governor? With only 80,881 votes, can he really say that he helped the Rivers APC, given that we have been growing organically since 2019?

The chieftains questioned, “Can a non-party man take over a national ruling party in a state, simply because he claims to have helped the national party in his state with only 80,881 votes when such claims couldn’t be substantiated by empirical data?”

The party leaders continued in the statement by pointing out that Wike joined the APC in an effort to save his political career.

There is proof that Wike did not work for the APC, they claimed. After learning that his political career was over, he made the decision to join the APC in order to have a safe haven from which to rob the APC in Rivers State.
