Tinubu is aware Nigerians are enduring hardship, says Okonjo-Iweala

0

President Bola Tinubu is aware of the hardship being felt by Nigerians as a result of the removal of fuel subsidies, according to Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, director general of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

On Tuesday, after meeting with President Tinubu at the State House in Abuja with former Minister of State for Health and Minister-designate, Dr. Mohammed Pate, Okonjo-Iweala gave a press conference in which she made this statement.

She claimed that the purpose of her visit to Tinubu was to discuss ways to lessen poverty in Nigeria.

That is what is required right now, according to Okonjo-Iweala, helping Nigerians to improve their precarious circumstances.

“Our discussion with the president focused on developing strategies to promote women’s empowerment, encourage job creation, and support digital trade within Nigeria’s economy.

Although this wasn’t really a WTO mission, we were able to speak with the president about the potential programs that could be implemented to ensure the welfare of Nigerians.

“We talked about trying to look at community and grassroots programs that can be put in place to create jobs for young people trying to support women and children who are bearing the brunt of some of the suffering in the country.

Okonjo-Iweala added that they had the chance to discuss longer-term investments in a variety of other Nigerian industries, including the pharmaceutical sector, during their visit.

We also discussed the potential benefits of the World Trade Organization, she continued.

“We are already assisting Nigerian women in particular who run small and medium-sized businesses to improve the caliber of their goods in the agricultural, textile, and other sectors so they can sell more internationally.

“We’re attempting to assist them with online trade. Digital trade is the way of the future. How then can we empower Nigerian women and small and medium-sized businesses nationwide to grow the economy and add to the number of jobs?

“That is what Nigeria needs right now to improve the difficult circumstances that the people there are facing.

“So, that is what we talked about with Mr. President, and as the Director General of the World Trade Organization, we will try to do everything in our power to support Nigerians at this particular time,” the statement continued.

Tinubu is actively working to alleviate the suffering and pains of the populace, according to Pate, a former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of GAVI, the global vaccine alliance.

Bauchi terminates senior civil servant over alleged serious misconduct of salary, pension scam

Ibrahim Garba’s employment with the State Pension Board as the Chief Secretarial Assistant has been terminated by the Bauchi State Civil Service Commission due to allegations of “serious misconduct of salary and pension scam.”

This information may be found in a statement made public on Tuesday in Bauchi by BSCSC’s information officer, Mr. Saleh Umar.

The Public Service Rule (PSR) 0327(XI), which addresses matters of financial embezzlement, is allegedly breached by Garba’s actions, according to the commission.

“On August 1, at a session of the 17th plenary session, the commission approved the termination.

“A State Pension Board disciplinary commission found Garba guilty of changing the account number of one Audu Mohammed, who is now deceased, with his own.

“This made it easier to adjust the pay point when the deceased’s kin confirmed his passing.

“Subsequently, he got an illegal pension for 55 months at a rate of N54,871 over a period of four years and seven months, totaling more than N3 million.

“This amount will be recovered from Garba’s benefits,” he declared.

He continued by saying that Alhaji Abubakar Usman, the commission’s chairman, had urged state employees to perform their jobs with a sense of reverence for God.

Usman insisted that the public service norm must be followed.

The commission won’t sit on its hands while dishonest people undermine the service, the panel’s chairman assured the state’s public servants, promising that no employee will be victimized for no reason.

Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors halted its planned nationwide daily protest

0

Following a closed-door meeting with Senate senior officers on Tuesday, the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors halted its planned nationwide daily protest.

In an interview with our correspondent, NARD President Emeka Orji stated this.

Orji, on the other hand, stated that a review will take place within the next 72 hours.

“We met with the Senate President, majority and minority leaders, as well as the Whip.” So, the scheduled protest for Wednesday has been canceled, and we will reconsider it in 72 hours.”

The striking doctors had already intended to launch a daily peaceful demonstration beginning Wednesday if the administration did not accept their demands.

The decision followed the Federal Government’s direction to the Chief Medical Directors and Medical Directors of federal tertiary hospitals to begin enforcing the “no work, no pay” policy against the striking doctors.

Following the government’s inability to satisfy their demands, the doctors went on indefinite strike on July 26.

The doctors are calling for the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria to stop downgrading membership certificates issued by West African Postgraduate Medical and Surgical Colleges, as well as the immediate payment of all salary arrears, the implementation of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure, a new hazard allowance, and the domestication of the Medical Residency Training Act.

Tory Lanez bags 10 years imprisonment for shooting Megan Thee Stallion

Tory Lanez, a Canadian rapper, was found guilty of shooting US artist Megan Thee Stallion in the feet after a heated altercation following a party in Hollywood. He was given a 10-year prison term on Tuesday.

After learning that Lanez had yelled “Dance, bitch” while shooting at the hip-hop diva as she stood in the street, a judge in Los Angeles gave the sentence.

The punishment followed Lanez’s conviction in December for assault with a semiautomatic weapon, negligent discharge of a firearm, and transportation of a loaded, unregistered firearm.

According to the prosecution, Lanez’s actions left the “WAP” performer with bodily and psychological scars, and they asked for a 13-year sentence.

The request from Lanez’s attorneys was for three years in prison or probation, as well as required treatment for alcoholism.

Judge David Herriford claimed to have received more than 70 letters, including from Lanez’s celebrity acquaintances, during a drawn-out sentence session that started on Monday.

Iggy Azalea, a musician, was one who demanded a sentence that was “transformational, not life-destroying,” according to him.

Another came from the little kid of Lanez.

However, the judge mandated that Lanez, who has been incarcerated since his conviction, serve ten years in prison.

He claimed that although the prosecution had established the use of a weapon and the victim’s vulnerability as aggravating elements, they had not established that the offense entailed a particularly high level of cruelty, viciousness, or callousness.

After a party at Kylie Jenner’s opulent home in July 2020, Megan Thee Stallion—real name Megan Pete—had been in a car with Lanez, his bodyguard, and her friend Kelsey Harris.

In the months prior to the incident, she and Lanez, whose true name is Daystar Peterson, had grown close.

According to the witness who testified in court, Megan Thee Stallion demanded to be allowed out of the car after an altercation broke out in the car between Lanez and Harris, who had only learnt of their sexual relationship that evening.

The rapper from the song “Savage” claimed she witnessed Lanez hold a gun at her and start shooting “after he yelled, Dance, bitch.”

During the trial, Megan Thee Stallion expressed to the judge her belief that, as a result of the shooting, she had “become some kind of villain,” with the male-dominated rap scene frequently appearing to be against her.

She claimed to have not enjoyed “a single day of tranquility” since she was shot in July 2020 in a statement read out in court on Monday.

“He didn’t just shoot me. He mocked my trauma, the woman claimed.

Global employment to grow by one per cent 2023 – ILO

According to the International Labour Organization, worldwide job growth will only be 1% in 2023—less than half of what it was in 2022.

In 2023, the ILO projects that there will be 208 million unemployed people worldwide.

In a press statement, Mia Seppo, the assistant director-general of the ILO’s jobs and social protection cluster, stated: “The cost of living crisis is driving more people into poverty, including working poor. The two billion people working in the informal economy, where they frequently lack legal rights or social protection, and the 200 million people living in abject poverty are among the most vulnerable employees.

She claimed that it was unlikely that employment would return to pre-pandemic levels in low-income nations this year.

“Our analysis suggests this is primarily due to a shift into the informal economy, which presumably postpones rather than answers workers’ issues,” she continued. “In those places where unemployment is currently below pre-crisis levels.

Seppo, in the meantime, urged Nigeria and other nations to accelerate their efforts to realize Sustainable Development Goal 8 on Decent Work for All.

ILO claimed that SDG Goal 8, which combines social, economic, and environmental targets, has an effect on all other Agenda 2030 objectives.

She remarked, “These phenomena were once the stuff of science fiction, but today they are the technological, demographic, and climate change-related factors altering the way we work. Examples include generative artificial intelligence that enhances human creativity and overheating megacities.

We don’t yet know if these influences will alter our workplace for the better or for the worse. The fact that the reforms are taking place amid significant current issues has compounded this anxiety.

When UN member states adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in 2015, they pledged to work toward a future where there is greater equity, sustainability, prosperity, and peace. She challenged nations to make sure that these improvements bring about that vision.

The SDG Summit in September in New York will include this as one of the major topics.

“Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 8 is essential in this regard. SDG 8 aims for full and productive employment as well as inclusive and sustainable economic growth, or, in other words, “decent work for all,” she said.

It is the only SDG, in Seppo’s opinion, that combines social, economic, and environmental goals.

It might be considered a “multiplier goal” of the broader sustainable development agenda in that regard because, if realized, it will have a favorable effect on other objectives.

It is unrealistic to expect emerging nations to act independently in a globalized economy. If we want to actually change things, we need global cooperation. She cited the creation of universal social safety systems as an example.

These, according to her, could lessen poverty, fragility, and inequities as well as aid in managing conflicts and social tensions.

According to Seppo, in order to reach this goal, humanitarian aid must be focused on bolstering social safety institutions and state capacity.

She emphasized, however, that a reorganized and rebalanced approach to globalization was important and that concerns about the effect of technology on job losses were legitimate.

She asserted that advancements in technology may lead to new employment prospects in developing nations.

“Furthermore, we must make sure that everyone involved in these supply chains reaps the rewards.

“We need to have clear, open policies and behaviors that are perceived as fair in order to bring all the elements of this strategy together. Because of this, the ILO is urging the creation of a Global Coalition for Social Justice, she pointed out.

Podcast Adopt tech to cut procurement losses, experts tell companies

To avoid waste and get the best results, experts have emphasized the necessity for businesses to utilize technology in their sustainability and procurement operations.

They announced their decision during the recent Africa Procurement and Supply Chain Awards in Lagos.

Companies need to be aware of the products they buy, according to Hannah Out, Group Head of Supply Chain at the Jospong Group of Companies.

She mentioned that one tactic the company had used over the years to make sure it was making the appropriate purchases was to include technology into its procurement process.

She remarked, “The group constantly insists on analyzing what the potential customers or bidders do to protect the environment in its procurement bidding process.”

Jacob Otuche, a spokesman of the Ghanaian Volta River Authority, said that digitization had enabled the business create a strong annual procurement calendar and digitally contact its consumers.

“We have a program that allows us to make plans for the entire year. Additionally, we have incorporated technology into our procedures, which allows us to interact customers digitally. We have been able to establish transparency and stop leaks because to this.

“Increasing procurement costs always has a negative financial impact on the organization. With the use of predictive procurement, our e-transaction card improves inventory management and allows for digital consumer engagement.

“We must be aware that the internet exists and poses a threat. As much as we want to improve our digital procurement process and cut waste, we also need to be cognizant of the risks the internet presents, he said.

Speaking in addition, Mr. Adeola Oduntan, General Manager of Supply Chain Management Finance, MTN Nigeria, said that as a telecom firm, MTN Nigeria had continued to take advantage of digital prospects by utilizing technology in each of the supply chain’s categories.

The event honored outstanding procurement experts, teams, and organizations in Africa for their exceptional leadership, ethical practices, and strategic supply chain management. It also displayed brilliance in effectively managing supplies for their respective organizations, according to Group Chief Executive Officer of InstinctWave and summit organizer Mr. Akin Naphtal.

He asserts that procurement specialists have been essential in promoting sustainable corporate growth in Africa.

Stakeholders to debate electronic media growth

At the second Nigerian Electronic Media Content Exhibition and Awards, industry stakeholders will discuss how to create, grow, and sustain a market for content produced by electronic media.

The Electronic Media Content Owners Association of Nigeria is in charge of organizing the event, which will take place in Lagos from August 22–24, 2023.

“Reviving the Broadcast Media Industry- the Role of Stakeholders (Content Producers, Broadcast Media, and Advertisers)” is the theme for this year’s conference.

It will include award recognition for many types of participants in the electronic media sector.

Alayande Stephen, the project coordinator, stated at a press conference recently to announce the event’s 2023 edition that EMCOAN has learned the value of the content market as a workable commercial instrument to expand the sector.

“What we have discovered in Nigeria is that the majority of awards are focused toward the genre of films/cinema/screen releases, while only a few have given the TV/Radio and Online spaces even a very cursory attention,” he stated. Since last year, NEMCEA has been filling this enormous void.

“The goal is to keep involving stakeholders from every link in the business’s value chain. In Nigeria, the electronic media industry is still very large and dominant, with a focus on TV, radio, and the internet. However, we need to examine various business models for the wide range of platforms that the current state of technology and the digital world has made possible.

Emeka Ossai, a member of the NEMCEA Board of Trustees, stated that the organization was founded out of the necessity to develop a market for the flood of material being produced by producers in the nation.

He expressed hope that the occasion would lead to the somewhat dormant Nigerian television sector experiencing a revival.
