3 die as Toyota Sienna plunges into river along Sagamu-Benin expressway

0

According to a report by the News Agency of Nigeria, a Toyota Sienna sedan that was travelling along the Sagamu-Benin motorway on Saturday crashed into a river, causing the deaths of three people.

The event was confirmed by Florence Okpe, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) public education officer in Ogun.
Three adult males were among the dead, according to Okpe, while another person was hurt.

She said:

The incident happened around 11:55 a.m., and the vehicle’s loss of control and excessive speed are thought to be the causes of the crash.

The car with the licence plate APP 830 HX was travelling from Benin to Lagos.

The injured victim, according to the FRSC spokesperson, was brought to Hope Clinic J4 in the state’s Ijebu-East local government area.

The State General Hospital mortuary in Ijebu-Ode is where the bodies of people who have passed away were placed, she stated.

According to Anthony Uga, the state sector commander of the FRSC, speeding by drivers, particularly those operating commercial vehicles, is the main contributing factor to traffic accidents, according to Okpe.

But in this instance, the FRSC sector commander praised the rescue operation’s use of local divers.

“We also feel for the families of the deceased, and we urge them to get in touch with the FRSC Ogbere outpost for more details about the crash,” she continued.

SERAP files Tinubu for barring 25 media houses from Aso Rock

0

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has filed legal action against President Bola Tinubu for “the unlawful ban and withdrawal of the accreditations of 25 journalists and media houses from covering the Presidential Villa.”

About 25 journalists who had been covering events in the Presidential Villa in Abuja have recently had their credentials withdrawn by the Federal Government.
The impacted journalists apparently got instructions to turn in their accreditation tags at the Presidential Villa’s main entrance.

In the lawsuit filed last Friday at the Federal High Court in Lagos under the case number FHC/L/CS/1766/23, SERAP is asking for “an order to direct and compel President Tinubu to reverse the revocation of the accreditations and ban on 25 journalists and media houses from covering the Presidential Villa.”

The lawsuit Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, SAN, Kolawole Oluwadare, and Ms. Valentina Adegoke filed on behalf of SERAP stated, in part: “The ban on the journalists from covering the Presidential Villa fails to meet the requirements of legality, necessity, and proportionality.”
“The media plays an essential role as a vehicle or instrument for the exercise of freedom of expression and access to information — in its individual and collective aspects — in a democratic society.”

“A free, independent, vibrant, pluralistic, and diverse media must exist for a democratic society to function properly.”

“To forbid these reporters and media organisations from covering the Presidential Villa is to forbid them from fulfilling their legitimate constitutional duty.”

“The removal of these journalists’ accreditation tags immediately infringes on media freedom and other human rights, such as the right of access to information and the ability to participate. It could result in self-censorship and have a substantial chilling effect on news gathering and reporting activities.

“The withdrawal of the journalists’ credentials would put barriers in the way of Nigerians’ constitutionally guaranteed access to specific information about the workings of their government.”

The journalists from the Vanguard newspaper, Galaxy TV, Ben TV, MITV, ITV Abuja, PromptNews, ONTV, and Liberty are reportedly among those who have been blacklisted. The majority of the reporters and cameramen from broadcast, print, and internet media publications are among the additional media professionals impacted by the withdrawal.

“The press, radio, television, and other agencies of the mass media shall at all times be free to uphold the fundamental objectives contained in this Chapter and uphold the responsibility and accountability of the Government to the people,” according to section 22 of the Nigerian Constitution.

“The participation of the people in their government shall be ensured in accordance with the provisions of this Constitution,” states Section 14(2)(c) of the Constitution.

The court hearing for the lawsuit has not yet been scheduled.

Nigerian Navy gets two extra ships to secure country’s maritime environment – Matawalle

The Nigerian Navy gets two extra ships to help strengthen its capacity to secure the country’s maritime domain, according to Bello Matawalle, Minister of State for Defence.

Matawalle, who did not specify the number of ships recently purchased by the Navy, stated that the platforms will also be extremely useful in the ongoing fight against crude oil theft, illegal refining, pipeline vandalism, and piracy.

According to a statement issued Saturday night by the Ministry’s Director of Press, Victoria Agba-Attah, Matawelle began this at the Passing Out Parade of Batch 34 Trainees of the Nigerian Navy Basic Training School in Onne, Port Harcourt.

“The Minister of State for Defence lauded the efforts of the Nigerian Navy in acquiring additional platforms to boost her fighting power against criminalities and illegalities within Nigerian territorial waters and the Gulf of Guinea,” it said.

“The newly acquired platforms would help the Nigerian Navy enhance its dominance and impact in the fight against crude oil theft, illegal refining, pipeline damage, piracy, and illegal unreported unregulated fishing operations.”

“The additional platforms would considerably increase the reach and coverage of the Nigerian Navy’s patrol capabilities within the recently built backwaters and inland waterways, FOB LEKKI, FOB EKPE, naval Base OGUTA, NOP TARKWA BAY, and NOP SHAGUNU.”

The Minister charged the 1,865 trainees of batch 34 to uphold the Nigerian Navy’s basic values.

Fayose Discusses Plans To Leave PDP And Expel Wike

0

Former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has denied resigning from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He said this on Channels Television’s Hard Copy, a pre-recorded show that airs on Friday nights.

“I will never join another political party if I am not in the PDP,” he declared. “And I would never be a member of the APC, good or bad.”

Fayose declared that the PDP must unite its members and seek to rehabilitate the party, which finished second in this year’s presidential election.

The former governor emphasised the importance of the southern region of Nigeria producing the president, adding it would have been unfair for the northern region to do so.

Meanwhile, he advised the main opposition party against exiling former Rivers State governor Nyesom Wike.

Remember that Wike participated in anti-party activities by working against the party in the 2023 presidential election and has since been appointed as a Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) by President Bola Tinubu.

“Some people say attack Wike, expel Wike, and sack Wike. I believe they do so at their own risk. You see, even in extreme situations or indifferences, the first thing in your family is not to drive away your wife or husband. “Wike is a force in the PDP and beyond the PDP, a power you cannot ignore,” he remarked.

“Ignore Wike, sack Wike, or battle Wike at your peril.” He is a capable man,” he added.

President Tinubu recalls Nigeria’s ambassadors, resulting in new appointments.

0

State House, Abuja – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commanded the recall of all career and non-career ambassadors serving in various countries.

The decision was announced by Yusuf Tuggar, minister of foreign affairs, only 24 hours after the president recalled Sarafa Isola, Nigeria’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom (UK). Tuggar’s adviser on media and communications strategy, Alkasim Abdulkadir, stated on Saturday, September 2nd, that the recall of Isola on Friday, September 1st, was applicable to all ambassadors.

In a letter dated August 31, the minister stated that Tinubu had recalled Isola and urged him to return to Nigeria by October 31 at the latest, after taking formal leave from his host nation.

Tuggar praised the outgoing High Commissioner for his service and wished him luck in his future ambitions on Tinubu’s behalf. “In response to inquiries regarding the letter recalling the Nigerian ambassador to the United Kingdom, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has clarified that all career and non-career ambassadors have been recalled on the instructions of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” the statement reads. “Ambassadors serve as ambassadors of the government at the President’s request, and it is his power to send or recall them from any country.” There was no hint of when their potential successors would take office.

Tinubu honours VP Shettima, who is 57, by saying, “I Am Honoured To Count You As A Friend.”

Vice President Kashim Shettima turned 57 today, September 2. President Bola Tinubu has expressed his congratulations.

In his birthday letter to Shettima, Tinubu congratulated the vice president for his “undying dedication” and “unwavering commitment” to the country.

Dear Shettima, as you mark your 57th year, I take a moment to reflect on the adventure we have undergone together in the service of our great nation, said the statement uploaded on the president’s official Instagram profile, @officialasiwajubat, on Saturday.

“Your journey from the University of Maiduguri classrooms to the highest levels of leadership is a testimonial to your unshakable commitment, unflinching loyalty, and unmatched wisdom.

“Your bravery, particularly during those difficult years in Borno State, has made an everlasting impression. Along with your perseverance in the face of difficulty, you stand out for your intellectual prowess and inventive energy.

“I am privileged to call you a friend in addition to being happy to have you as our vice president. May you have the same grace, wisdom, and strength in the years to come as you have displayed throughout the years.

‘Happy 57th, Kashim. We look forward to many more years of cooperation and mutual success,” the letter said.

Abiodun flags off distribution of 300,000 bags of rice as palliatives

0

300,000 bags of 10kg rice palliatives will be distributed to state residents by Ogun State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun.

The event, which happened on Friday, was in keeping with Prince Abiodun’s assurance that the palliatives would be distributed right away.

The governor confirmed that the state administration had domesticated the palliatives after the federal government had provided them to the states.

“This is a federal government effort that is being domesticated right here in Ogun State under the direction of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“Our initial goal is to disperse roughly 300,000 sacks of 10kg rice throughout our 5,400 polling places.

“We realised that employing wards won’t be equitable, so we’ve chosen to use voting units as a reference of distribution rather than wards.

“Consider contrasting, for instance, the Ogijo ward in Sagamu with the Ikenne ward. It would be extremely unjust and unequitable to distribute palliatives according to the ward.

But since we are aware that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has set up our polling units in such a way that each of us is a part of one, it has been possible for us to estimate the population of the various wards.

“So you learn that, for instance, a ward in Ogijo will have a far higher number of voting stations than a ward in Ikenne or Remo North. Therefore, we determined that the polling units would serve as our point of reference, he stated.

Abiodun pointed out that a committee made up of notable men and women has been formed to supervise the distribution of the palliatives.

According to him, the committee, led by his deputy, would make sure that the distribution of palliative care was carried out effectively, and the 20 local governments would also have committees of a similar nature.

“From all around the state, this group is comprised of very prominent, dependable, and eminent men and women.

“My deputy governor will preside over the committee, and she will be assisted by our former deputy governors who are present, as well as two members of the National Assembly, one of whom will represent the House of Representatives and the other the Senate.

Our Iyalojas, CDCs, CDAs, youth community members, interethnic representatives, community leaders, and other distinguished eminent personalities, we believe, will ensure that the palliative distribution is carried out effectively, efficiently, and transparently, the governor said.

He claims that the Central Working Committee (CWC) will be given the power to establish committees in each of the state’s 20 local government areas.

The chairman of the council, the governor’s liaison officers (GLO), a state house of assembly member from each local government, religious leaders, community leaders, young people, students, Iyalojas, and the traditional institution will make up the committees in each local government.

While praising President Tinubu for coming up with the idea for the programme to mitigate the effects of the elimination of the fuel subsidy, Abiodun stated that his administration had categorised the president’s various interventions into the short-, medium-, and long-term.

The state’s head of government announced that his administration has started paying public employees in the state a travel allowance of N10,000. He also noted that payments for other allowances, such as hazard and gratuities, have started.

“As you may recall, we began by providing N10,000 transport allowances to all of our public employees, including teachers and pensioners.

“We also determined that no more than 80% of our workers should be required to be present in the office at any given moment.

“We’ve started paying other allowances, such as danger allowances. As part of the cushioning impact of the loss of subsidy, we started offsetting backlogs of various payments, including pensions, gratuities, deductions, and all other payments, he said.

Abiodun also stated that pregnant women in the entire state would have access to health insurance under his government.

He continued by saying that their access to primary, secondary, or tertiary medical facilities would be made possible by their health insurance coverage.

We will also offer our Ogun State Health Insurance Cover, known as “Ibi Dero,” to all pregnant women in the entire state of Ogun.

“This will cover their pre-natal engagements and also post-natal consultations for up to six months, meaning that you can go to a Primary Health Care Centre, Secondary Health Care, or a Tertiary and consult Pre-natal, give birth for free because the state government is bearing the cost of all that,” he said.

Additionally, the governor announced that his administration will provide the palliatives to needy kids throughout the state.

Prince Abiodun also revealed that his administration would soon start its E-mobility programme, which would enable his administration to replace gasoline-powered motorcycles with electric motorcycles at the expense of the state, and that his administration’s energy transition programme, which would allow state-owned buses to use Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), would soon start as well.

Abiodun’s open-door approach was praised earlier by the representatives of the Community Development Associations (CDAs), Usman Olamilekan, and the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP); Comrade Bola Lawal.

Alhaja Yemisi Abass, the Iyaloja General of Ogun State and a member of the committee, praised the governor for sending additional rice in addition to the supplies the federal government had supplied.
He complimented the governor for selecting committee members from around the state.

In an interview, Governor Dapo Abiodun received praise from Mrs. Ileyemi Olayinka, who represents people with special needs, and Comrade Segun Obadimu, who represents the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, for the rice palliatives they received. They noted that such programmes would support the state’s residents in their perseverance.

President Tinubu, Thank You for Betta Edu

0

Since its inception, I have closely watched the Tinubu Administration’s operations. Regardless of my political leanings, the actions and decisions of the government in power influence me as a Nigerian, thus I have a stake in Tinubu’s administration’s success.

I anxiously anticipated the release of the ministerial list, as did the majority of Nigerians. Ministers have, thankfully, been sworn in. The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development, Dr. Betta Edu, is one person who has drawn my attention.

Her ethereal appearance, poise, and charm immediately draw attention, but almost immediately you become aware of her other admirable traits, and you realise that she is unquestionably one of the President’s most brilliant Ministerial selections.

You are in a fog as you scan her resume. You look at her career history and are amazed. In actuality, all other supporting factors for her nomination are forgotten. She is young. Well, absolutely, but others twice her age are still striving to accomplish half of what she has accomplished in her youth. Heh, she’s a lady. No doubt. based only on gender identification. You cannot abandon her in a meaningless container. She is a natural force that moves in accordance with her own atmosphere. You have to pay attention when she enters.

Since its creation, the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs has received negative press. It has created a stir and left a bad taste in the mouths of many for such a young Ministry. The majority of its declarations of job completion are received with jeers and yells of scepticism. A massive overhang of unmet trust burdens the Ministry.

Dr. Edu has stepped into this environment well equipped. She makes it clear that she was ready when she arrived. Since being sworn in, she has been visiting media outlets in an effort to promote her projects and dispel some of the myths surrounding the Ministry. A difficult task. Enough to bring down the weak-willed, but Dr. Edu is far from weak-willed. Through and through, she is an Amazon.

There is no question that this Minister knows exactly what she came to do after listening to her speak passionately about the task ahead. This one won’t wait to observe Oga’s facial expressions at the top. Dr. Edu will complete any necessary tasks quickly and effectively.

She has reportedly spent the entire week having a retreat with her directors and department heads. What should you be doing right now? How did you act? What is keeping you from carrying out your obligations? I’ve heard the session was challenging. I hope best for her directors. If I were them, I would embrace this Minister instead of the infamous Civil Service guardedness, protectionism, and games. They all stand to earn significantly from her success.

The issue is that the Dr. Edu I’m seeing doesn’t appear to be going to ask for your consent to follow orders. Otherwise, it’s not in your best interests.

Eyes are on you, Dr. Edu. The bar has been raised. On you, there is hope. young people. Women and other demographic groups. I won’t ask you to keep them happy. You don’t seem to be thinking about it at all. I therefore close by praying for you. Godspeed.

The announcement of the high commissioner’s recall is made in a letter from Yusuf Tuggar, minister of foreign affairs, dated August 31.

“I have the honour to inform you that Mr. President has decided to recall you, indicating the end of your term as the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador to the United Kingdom.

In accordance with this notification, you are now required to start winding up your affairs, seek formal leave from your host government within 60 days, and return to Nigeria no later than October 31, 2023, according to the letter.
Tuggar congratulated the ambassador for his service and wished him luck in his future ambitions on behalf of Tinubu.

In January 2021, Isola was appointed as the high commissioner to the UK by the late President Muhammadu Buhari.

Under the late former President Musa Yar’Adua, Isola also served as Minister for Mines and Steel Development.

EFCC: Frivolous judgements responsible for loss of high-profile corruption

0

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, or EFCC, attributes its failure to prosecute corruption cases to frivolous court rulings.

The anti-corruption organisation also bemoaned its inability to obtain convictions in high-profile corruption cases.

Wilson Uwajaren, the EFCC’s spokesperson, said this in a conversation with journalists in Kaduna State.

Uwajaren outlined some of the difficulties that slow down the prosecution of corruption cases and the achievement of convictions.

He claimed that among other things, the losses were brought on by arbitrary adjournments of corruption cases and frivolous court rulings based on technicalities rather than the truth and the interests of the country.

He continued by saying that in 2022, the commission obtained around 7,700 convictions nationwide.
