24 dead, 30 rescued in Niger boat accident

The boat tragedy that occurred on Sunday in the state’s Mokwa Local Government Area left several people dead, and Governor of Niger State Mohammed Bago has expressed sorrow at the incident.

He demanded that everyone boarding a boat in the state wear a life jacket, and he denounced overcrowding on any boat setting out on a journey.

Over 30 people have been saved, and 24 individuals, largely women and children, have been declared dead. A joint rescue effort by local divers and marine police, working with the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, is still going on.

Gunmen shot and killed Wilson, a member of the vigilante group at the First Marine Gate quarters in the Delta State local government of Warri South, early on Monday.

A gunfight between the shooters and the neighbourhood vigilante team is said to have taken place, however some of the vigilante team’s members were forced to flee because of the attackers’ greater weaponry.

Wilson, one of the vigilantes, was killed as a result of the invaders’ gunfire.

The administration of Wesley University, located in the town of Ondo in the state of Ondo, has announced a 50% cut in tuition.

He asserts that the institution’s departments of Natural and Applied Sciences, Education, Agriculture, Finance and Investment, and Economics are the ones offering some of the programs with a 50% tuition discount.

 

The VC outlined how despite the affected programs’ importance to national growth, students do not frequently enroll in them because of their “expensive tuition fees and supposed abstract or ambiguous nature.”

“The gesture was implemented to encourage parents and guardians to permit their children and wards to enjoy the benefits and endowments inherent in the institution,” the speaker stated. This is also done to fulfill the commitment made when our institution first opened to provide all Nigerians with opportunities for professional and academic development and, in turn, help foster national development.

As part of its attempts to foster an effective and strong national ethos and the effective implementation of national development objectives, the Methodist Church of Nigeria judged it wise to create Wesley University, Ondo.

According to the Don, the university has nine colleges and 44 academic programs that have all been accepted and certified by the National Universities Commission.

He stated that some of the programs were in the colleges of law, the arts, education, natural and applied sciences, environmental design and management, agriculture, food science and technology, health sciences, and social and management sciences.

Wesley University also operates a school for postgraduate studies, a school for continuing education, and an institute for agricultural research and training, all of which are prepared to produce the knowledgeable and skilled labor force needed to advance Nigeria’s efforts to make significant developmental strides and to secure her place among the comity of developed and progressive nations.

He stated: “These colleges provide programs in community health, early childhood education, special education, library and information science, law, and nursing science.”

Obeka pointed out, however, that rather than raising tuition at the publicly funded universities, the government should first address the elimination of fuel subsidies and the practicality of the suggested palliative measures.

Over the weekend, information came to light that FAAN had given five buses for use in transporting passengers to their aircrafts.
The purchase of the bus less than two weeks after the minister’s visit, according to a typically reliable source who was not authorised to talk, demonstrated his commitment to refocusing the industry.

“FAAN has introduced a new set of luxurious buses to transfer incoming passengers from the aircraft to the terminal in an effort to overcome the issues faced in the migration as a result of the loss of an aviobridge. This demonstrates the new Minister’s ongoing will to tackle the difficulties of sector reorientation head-on, the source said.

Festus Keyamo, the minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, reportedly gave all foreign airlines until October 1, 2023, to relocate from the old terminal to the newly constructed Chinese terminal. The reason why they are not using this new terminal is being questioned by Nigerians. The issue has arisen simply because this international Gateway terminal was not built with a capacity for large aircraft; there are no avio-bridges that can connect large aircraft. Meanwhile, the Lagos airport generates 60% of FAAN’s revenue.

“We’re going to close the old terminal and take care of all the problems with the terminal renovation; there are problems with concessions and all of that right now, so I’ve suspended everything, including the Nigeria Air problem. I’ve ordered that everything be put on hold until I inform Mr. President of the situation with all of this hubbub. I owe it to Nigerians and the President to advise him honestly and appropriately. I am currently reviewing all the contracts and documents that were signed in order to do so.

However, he revealed that the ministry would purchase buses to transport foreign visitors to and from the new terminal until the problem with the new terminals was being fixed, which would allow wide-bodied international planes to fly.

“At the moment, the temporary arrangements we have are that we must figure out a way to utilise the new facility for the convenience of Nigerians. In order to provide Nigerians with some level of comfort, we must conduct an emergency procurement to purchase large buses and transport people to locations where large jets may halt for both arrivals and departures.

The Foundation for Peace Professionals, better known as PeacePro, a think tank for peacebuilding, has urged the Federal Government to give historical names to Nigeria’s six geopolitical regions.

The group claimed in a statement released by its Executive Director, Mr. Abdulrazaq Hamzat, that simply referring to Nigeria’s six geopolitical regions as North West, South West, North East, South East, and North Central has no political significance and that a more politically aware strategy is necessary to end regional unrest.

Hamzat contends that in order to accurately reflect the preferences and ambitions of the populace, the Federal Government should name the six zones.

Running away from such political identities will naturally make them feel entitled to those identities, as people in different zones of Nigeria identify themselves by particular names and descriptions.

To mobilize individuals in their search for significance, non-state actors simply invoke those identities for which people have affinity and connections, according to Hamzat.
