Breaking: 800-room Lagos building collapses, leaving two people hurt

After a school-turned-residential building in the Ketu neighborhood of Lagos partially collapsed on Sunday, at least two people are currently fighting for their lives at a private hospital.

On Saturday afternoon, after several hours of rain that deluged most of Lagos, the Agboye Estate building on Oduntan Street in Ketu, which contained over 800 rooms and hundreds of residents, first collapsed.

On Sunday afternoon, as people were still attempting to save their possessions, the building collapsed once more, causing another building inside the compound to be completely destroyed.

Numerous families and individuals living in the building were forced to leave after the incident spread panic throughout the neighborhood.

On Sunday evening, as members of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency cordoned off the area, dozens of residents could be seen moving their belongings in various directions.

Lagos officials have designated the problematic compound, which contained several defective buildings, for demolition.

In December 2014, Saturday PUNCH released a report on the collapsed structure titled “500-room house in Lagos where tenants live as prisoners” following weeks of investigation.

 

The report detailed the appalling living conditions of Agboye Estate tenants, who had to contend with snakes, scorpions, and other venomous creatures because of standing sewage water at the back of the structure.

At least 12 rooms shared a single bathroom and toilet in the majority of the blocks that were built just inches apart from one another.

There are typically two people in each room, making a total of 24 people using one toilet.

In addition, the landlord, Onamo Agboye, forbids tenants from using power generators, electric kettles, air conditioners, or even hosting significant social gatherings like birthday parties or naming ceremonies inside the building.

Every day at 11:00 p.m., the only entrance into and out of the compound closes; nobody enters or exits after that time.

When the building was initially partially sealed, the Lagos State Government later lifted the ban.

After Sunday’s tragedy, the landlord of Agboye Estate has since disappeared.

The bilateral agreement covers the following areas of cooperation: biotechnology, scientific research and innovation, technical advancement, human resource development, expert exchange in the field of science and technology, and technology transfer for developing countries.

NIMC releases self-service NIN registration app

Nigerians may now self-serve their way into registering for a National Identification Number using a smartphone, thanks to a new initiative by the National Identity Management Commission.

The platform was introduced on Saturday in Abuja at the Commission and Ministry of Interior’s celebration of the 5th Identity Day.

Abisoye Coker-Odusote, the Commission’s acting director general and CEO, emphasized the importance of identity in the nation at the event.

Identity, according to her, “symbolizes our existence, our rights, and our role in society; it is more than just a card or a number. It opens doors to vital services, social advantages, and routes to a person’s personal and financial development. It acts as a link to our common humanity while standing as a tribute to our uniqueness.

 

She also emphasized the need to prioritize the principles of privacy and data protection in order to maintain vigilance in preserving the integrity and security of identity systems.

In order to successfully provide identification solutions for everyone, she continued, “Above all, we must be inclusive, leaving no one behind.”

The head of NIMC added that, among other advantages, a good identity management system may aid Nigeria in reducing insecurity and supporting its citizens.

She responded, “We are aiming to accelerate the turn-around time of registration,” when asked about the motivation for the self-service solution platform. During his eight years in power, he pointed out that Kano has maintained its status as one of the most peaceful states in the country.

“Mr. President, the study that has been presented here today provides, in my opinion, the solution to the difficulties that have been plaguing the livestock business. It addresses the most important reforms and gives a variety of development choices that are required for the continued and sustainable growth of the sector.

The Convener made the following observation: “The adoption of the suggestions will aid in reducing the cost of importation for animal products like milk and beef. It will also boost productivity, which will benefit livelihoods; it will promote environmental conservation; it will address substantial causes of disputes between farmers and pastoralists; and it will address substantial sources of conflicts between farmers and pastoralists.”

Breaking: President Tinubu Appoints Dr Olayemi Cardoso As Central Bank Governor, Four Others As Deputy Governors

Dr. Olayemi Michael Cardoso has been appointed by President Bola Tinubu for the position of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) as its new governor, initially for a term of five (5) years, pending approval.

According to Section 8 (1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has the power to nominate the Governor and four (4) Deputy Governors for the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), subject to confirmation by the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. This directive is in accordance with that provision.

In addition, President Bola Tinubu has given the go-ahead for the appointment of the following four new Deputy Governors of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), each of whom would serve for a term of five (5) years at the outset, pending approval by the Nigerian Senate:

Mrs. Emem Nnana Usoro is one.

Mr. Muhammad Sani Abdullahi Dattijo, number 2.

(3) Philip Ikeazor, Jr.

(4) Bala M. Bello, Ph.D.

President Bola Tinubu expects the aforementioned nominees to successfully carry out crucial reforms at the Central Bank of Nigeria in line with his Renewed Hope agenda. This will increase the confidence of Nigerians and foreign partners in the restructuring of the Nigerian economy toward sustainable growth and prosperity for all.
