The governor of Edo, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has extended an automatic job offer to the twelve recent first-class Edo State University of Uzairue graduates.

According to Obaseki, who made this announcement at the university’s 5th Convocation, among the 12 graduates is Emos Ishaku, an internally displaced person (IDP) who lives in Edo’s Ihogua Camp.

“As you are aware, those of you who earn first-class degrees are automatically considered for jobs in the Edo State civil service.

The funds necessary to complete the teaching hospital and the medical sciences’ infrastructure will be included in the budget for the next year.

“I have directed that the school be included in the current high-speed fiber optic deployment to bolster the endeavors the institution has undertaken to enhance education,” he added.

Prof. Emmanuel Aluyor, the Vice Chancellor of the institution, stated that in just seven years of operation, the university has broken several milestones that the more established universities in Nigeria should aim to match.

As of right now, Edo State University in Uganda is the only institution in Africa to own some high-tech training tools for its medical students.

“With the acquisition of CANVAS Learning, a digital teaching and learning environment for our instructors and students, the institution is the first in Sub-Saharan Africa.

“The National Universities Commission (NUC) ranked the university as the best in the South-South area of Nigeria, the second-best state university, and the tenth-best university in Nigeria overall in 2022.

“At Edo State University Uzairue, there are currently 356 graduates: 12 are first class, 164 are second class upper division, 234 are second class lower division, and 14 are third class.

65 of our degrees are unclassified. Four applicants successfully finished Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) programs, and nine candidates completed Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programs.

48 people will graduate with master’s degrees in science and arts, while 38 will obtain postgraduate diplomas.

Unknown gunmen invaded Gandu, a community near the Federal University of Lafia (FULafia), killing one person and kidnapping an unspecified number of locals to an unknown destination.

According to reports, the incident occurred late Monday night.

Because of its proximity to the university’s permanent site, Gandu houses both faculty and students.

As a result, there is a significant presence of students and university workers in the region.

As at the time of writing, the victims of the incident had yet to be identified.

In response to the attack, security officers have been sent to the area to ensure the safety and protection of citizens’ lives and property.

The Nigerian Army has reported that three terrorists were successfully neutralized during clearance operations near the villages of Maidaro, Ngade, Ahla, and Rikau in the state’s Birnin Gwari Local Government Area.

Lt.-Col Musa Yahaya, spokesman for the 1st Division of the Nigerian Army in Kaduna, stated on Monday that the terrorists attempted to flee when they saw the troops, but two of them were killed and the others managed to escape with gunshot wounds.

During the operation, the troops recovered an AK47 rifle, and the criminals abandoned a motorcycle.
In another operation, the troops conducted an operation in the Tantatu and Antena areas within Chikun Local Government Area of the state. They successfully neutralized one terrorist and recovered one AK-47 rifle, one AK-47 magazine, seven 7.62mm (Special) ammunition, and two mobile phones.
Maj-Gen. Valentine Okoro, General Officer Commanding 1st Division, Nigerian Army, and Force Commander of “Operation Whirl Punch,” praised the troops for their efforts and urged them to maintain their high level of performance until all terrorists and criminals within the Division’s area of responsibility were completely eradicated.

He also urged the people of Kaduna State to continue providing credible and actionable intelligence reports to the army and other security agencies.

Mr Ola Olukoyede, Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has urged heads of tertiary institutions across the country to counsel their students against internet fraud.

He made the appeal on Monday at the commission’s Zonal Command Office in Ilorin during an interactive session with Kogi tertiary institution heads.

Olukoyede, who was represented by the Ilorin Zonal Commander, Mr Michael Nzekwe, urged tertiary institutions to work with the commission to combat the rising tide of internet fraud among students.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the engagement is a follow-up to a meeting held earlier on May 4, as part of the command’s proactive measures to combat cybercrime in Kwara.

He advised tertiary institution administrators to put in place measures to discourage students from engaging in criminal activity.

“Parents should also be more committed to their children’s moral upbringing, both in school and at home, to support the prevention agenda.”

“The commission can achieve the task of ridding the country of corruption if every institution gets involved and actively participate in the fight against the menace,” the chairman said.

He also charged educational institutions with changing the negative narratives about education quality in Nigeria.
According to him, a corruption-free Nigeria is possible if everyone gets involved in the fight against corruption proactively and sincerely.

Prof. Salawu Sadiku, Vice Chancellor of Confluence University of Science and Technology, Osara, responded by applauding the EFCC initiative.

Sadiku urged the commission to include anti-corruption courses in the school curriculum and to teach them at all levels.

“Today’s youth are exposed to a number of vices that have the potential to permanently ruin their lives.”

“We need to do more for students to focus on their studies and desist from all forms of cybercrimes,” he told the audience.

Similarly, Dr Salisu Usman, Rector of Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, and Dr Umar Hassan, Provost of College of Education, Okene, stressed the importance of instituting anti-corruption watchdogs to combat cybercrime on campuses.

Dr Yahaya Usman, Rector of Federal Polytechnic, Idah, and Mrs Victoria Jagboro, Provost of College of Education (Technical), Kabba, urged the EFCC to strengthen its intelligence gathering mechanisms and guidance and counselling efforts.
