Kenneth Okonkwo Claims Tinubu Is Modeling Nigeria After Lagos – Fubara Responds

0

By imposing a state of emergency in Rivers State, veteran Nollywood actor Kenneth Okonkwo has charged President Bola Tinubu with usurping the state’s authority.
“The declaration of state of emergency by Tinubu, which led to the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the State House of Assembly, has caused Rivers State to enter a constitutional crisis due to the suspension of its legislative and executive branches,” Okonkwo continued.
Tinubu is attempting to establish a same political base in Rivers State as he did in Lagos State, according to Okonkwo.
In order to prevent chaos in the oil-rich state, he asserted that President Tinubu should lift the suspension in Rivers State immediately.

According to the leader of the Labour Party, the state has two choices given the current state of affairs: either it will respect the Constitution and the will of the people or it will give in to impunity.

The submission was reportedly made by Okonkwo on Sunday through a post on his 𝕏 account.

“It is evident that Rivers State has been thrown into a constitutional crisis as a result of the federal suspension of its legislative and executive branches,” he said.

It desecrates our federal system and jeopardizes democratic government by blatantly usurping state authority through the unlawful declaration of a fictitious state of emergency.

“Nigerians and everyone who supports democracy must take serious action. Rivers State is forced to choose between upholding the Constitution and the people’s will or giving in to impunity.

The decision is up to us, and the stakes are extremely high because the goal of the entire plan is to eventually convert Nigeria to Tinubu’s familitocratic government model, which is modeled after Lagos.

“In order to prevent chaos, the elected representatives of Rivers State should be lifted from their suspension immediately.”

Drug Lord Arrested After 3-Year Hunt as NDLEA Seizes N6.1bn Codeine in Onne

Following a manhunt for three years, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has apprehended Sunday Ibigide, a 36-year-old infamous drug kingpin.
on Asaba, Delta State, Ibigide was arrested on Sunday, August 10, 2025, as he was trying to transport 250 blocks of 138 kg skunk on his distribution bus.

In a statement released on Sunday, NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi recalled that Ibigide arrived on the agency’s radar for the first time on March 19, 2022, when agents connected him to the confiscation of 10 grams of molly and 24.137 kg of skunk.
According to Babafemi, “he went underground after that, but agents in Delta, acting on reliable information, arrested him and his assistant, 27-year-old Clement Osuya, while they were transporting 250 skunk parcels for distribution.”

On August 14–15, NDLEA agents, aided by the military and vigilantes, conducted a concerted assault on three cannabis fields in Enugu Ezike, destroying 37,500 kg of skunk grown on 15 hectares.

In addition to the arrest of six suspects—Ugwuanyi Chinaso (age 23), James Negedu (age 26), Sopuruchukwu Obido (age 22), Ebuka Onu (30), Ukwueze Sunday (age 42), and Oguche Friday—and the recovery of 74.5 kg of skunk for prosecution.

At Nsukka Road in Enugu, another suspect, 53-year-old Emmanuel Ayogu, was found in possession of 20,700 tramadol and cocodamol pills that same week. With 27.6 kg of skunk, two more people were taken into custody at New Market.

Muyibat Mumuni, 52, and her 25-year-old son Faruk were detained in Mushin, Lagos, on August 13 for allegedly distributing and keeping 298 blocks of Ghana Loud (149 kg).

Two days later, in Ajah, Lekki, Emmanuel Samuel was apprehended in possession of 8.5 kg of the powerful cannabis strain Canadian Loud.

Authorities found 128,000 tramadol capsules in Gombe from Sani Mohammed, age 32, and 337,800 capsules from Sulaiman Oyedokun, 47, a commercial driver on the Okene-Lokoja route in Kogi.

On 4.5 hectares of Tanmiya woodland in Taraba, NDLEA teams destroyed 11,250 kg of skunk and detained 20-year-old Saleh Babangida in connection with 29,840 tramadol capsules.

Four suspects were apprehended by the Kaduna police, who also retrieved 11,1.1 kg of skunk and 22,640 tramadol/rohypnol pills in separate operations.

At Onne Port, 3.5 million pills and 6.1 billion dollars worth of codeine were seized.
3.5 million trodol benzhexol pills (worth ₦1.7 billion) and 875,000 bottles of codeine syrup (worth ₦6.1 billion) were found during the largest raid at the Port Harcourt Ports Complex in Onne, Rivers State.

Between August 13 and 14, five containers that were jointly inspected with Customs and other security services at the West Africa Container Terminal (WACT) were seized in accordance with the NDLEA’s intelligence watch list.

State-by-State Seizures
130 kilograms of skunk were found in Sobe, while 24 bags weighing 432 kg were found on Warake-Auchi Road in Edo State.

Two suspects, Ibrahim Audu (47), and Tahiru Manga (25), were taken into custody in Kano State with 92 kg of skunk.

PHPC, Gombe, Kogi, Lagos, Edo, Kano, Delta, Taraba, and Seme Command officers were praised for their efforts by Brig.-Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), Chairman of the NDLEA, who also commended the operational team.

The agency’s balanced approach to drug control, which combines enforcement with War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) sensitization, should be maintained, he encouraged them.

In addition to traditional leaders like the Shehu of Borno, the Emir of Borgu, and the Emir of Lafia, he mentioned that recent advocacy visits included meetings with former Head of State Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar.

By combating this threat on all fronts, we are investing in our nation’s future, Marwa stated.

Abure Faction Accuses Peter Obi, Alex Otti of Defeat Following INEC Decision

Alex Otti, the governor of Abia State, and Peter Obi, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, are the losers in the party’s leadership crisis, according to the Julius Abure-led section of the Labour Party (LP).
Obiora Ifoh, the party’s polarizing National Publicity Secretary, made this statement on Saturday in response to a court decision over the by-elections that were held that day.
Interim National Chairman Nenadi Usman and her camp’s celebration that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had revoked Julius Abure’s recognition after a Federal High Court ruling on August 15, 2025, surprised the faction.
According to Ifoh, Usman and her allies were influencing the opposition. They were celebrating, he thought, because they wanted the LP dead.

“Do they not allow the enemy to gain an advantage? Who gains anything from this whole ordeal? Who lost? Dr. Alex Otti and Peter Obi are the losers in all of these, aren’t they? Is their celebration motivated by a desire for the party to end?

“A party that offered them a platform when they were dissatisfied with other political parties, a party that gave them hope when they had none.”

Nenadi’s practice of disseminating the identical counter-affidavit as though it were a brand-new document is therefore childish. Their celebration means nothing to us,” the message read.

Most Wanted Ansaru Leader Abu Baraa Arrested by Security Forces

Nigeria’s security services have detained Abu Baraa, the most wanted member of the Ansaru terrorist organization and the alleged architect of multiple high-profile attacks in the nation.
Nuhu Ribadu, the National Security Adviser, made the announcement on Saturday at a special press conference held at the National Counter-Terrorism Centre in Abuja.

Security officers had been pursuing Baraa since May till his eventual detention in July, according to Ribadu, who was accompanied by heads of intelligence and service.
He said the arrest was a significant step forward in the war on terror.

The NSA clarified that the increasing encroachment of the Ansaru organization in Nigeria made Baraa’s trial necessary.

The top leadership of Jama’atu Ansarul Muslimina fi-Biladis Sudan, also known as ANSARU, Nigeria’s Al-Qaeda affiliate, was apprehended as a result of a high-risk, intelligence-led counterterrorism operation, he added.

In January 2012, the group was first established in Kano through a public announcement. As a Boko Haram splinter group, it positioned itself as a “humane alternative.”

But soon after, its declared goal shifted to attacking Nigerian government facilities, civilian communities, and security personnel.

In order to demonstrate its operational and doctrinal affinities with international jihadist groups, the group prominently displayed the Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) setting sun logo.

“Over the years, Ansaru established itself in both urban sleeper cells and forest enclaves, which are found in a number of northern Nigerian cities and in forest-based enclaves, especially in the vicinity of Kainji National Park, which spans the states of Niger, Kwara, and the Benin Republic.”

Okpebholo, PDP Official Decries BVAS Malfunction in By-Election

During the state’s senatorial and Federal House of Representatives by-elections, Monday Okpebholo, the governor of Edo State, and Otote Famous, a PDP leader in Ovia North-East Local Government Area, have bemoaned the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System’s (BVAS) malfunction.
Shortly after casting their ballots, the two had separately interviewed in Ekiadolor Primary School in Ovia North-East Local Government Area and Ward 2, Unit 1, Udomi Primary School in Esan Central.
The Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) BVAS machines, according to Okpebholo, were generating needless delays.
I cast my ballot just now. You can see how frustrated they are. The BVAS simply moves too slowly. The time it takes to become accredited is excessive. INEC should investigate this, in my opinion. So far, so good. I’m getting wonderful vibes,” he remarked.

Famous expressed his regret that if INEC does not act quickly to straighten out the BVAS, more people will lose their right to vote.

According to Famous, a number of people have cast ballots, but the BVAS has prevented more than 20 others from doing so.

Although a sizable number of people cast ballots, the BVAS was not working at 10:00 am, preventing more than 20 people from doing so.

The BVAS has been under the management of INEC officials. “The machines have been having problems ever since they started,” he stated.

Businessman Ajanaku Demands N100m, Apology Over Allegations by Fresh FM

Otunba Rotimi Ajanaku, a well-known businessman, philanthropist, and political figure in Oyo State, has complained that Fresh FM Nigeria, which is owned by well-known gospel performer Yinka Ayefele, has broadcast false and destructive accusations against him, seriously harming his reputation.

Therefore, Ajanaku, through his legal representatives, Obisesan & Co. (The Law Union), served the station’s CEO/Managing Director at Ayefele Music House, Challenge, Ibadan, with a strongly worded petition demanding three immediate actions from Fresh FM: “A public apology to Otunba Ajanaku for the defamatory broadcast, a halt to any further defamatory comments or reports about him, and the payment of N100 million in general damages.”

Chief (Dr) T.A. ‘Lowo Obisesan, the chairman and founding partner of the law firm, signed the petition, accusing Fresh FM of broadcasting a statement on August 13, 2025, claiming that Ajanaku’s hotel construction in Imalefalafia Community, Oke-Ado, Ibadan, had blocked public rights of way, caused flooding, and destroyed a portion of the late Pa Obafemi Awolowo’s master plan for the area.

The petition claims that the accusations raised by Fresh FM’s correspondent, Adeola Bankole, were broadcast without the station making an effort to get in touch with Ajanaku or confirm important details like the official survey plan, the community’s government-approved master plan, or any formal complaint filed with the appropriate authorities.

According to Ajanaku, he obtained the necessary government approvals for the Dino Hotel project and lawfully purchased the land. He also claims that he started building under the guidance of his site engineer.

In addition to violating the legal principle of audi alteram partem, or “hear the other side,” his attorneys contend that Fresh FM’s conduct turned the station into “an instrument for perpetuating injustice” and violated his fundamental right to a fair hearing.

As Insecurity Grows, Nigerians Push Back Against Self-Defence Restrictions

0

A crucial discussion about how far citizens should go to protect themselves when the government appears incapable or unwilling to do so is becoming more heated as insecurity continues to rage throughout Nigeria. A growing chorus of voices, from destroyed villages to legislative chambers, are questioning the boundaries of self-defense and calling for greater rights and access to resources that could enable communities to fend off attacks. Joseph Titilope writes

The national security discussion is being subtly reshaped by a surge of civic unrest. More communities are facing the sobering question: if the state is unable to protect us, do we not have the right to defend ourselves? This is due to the constant attacks by armed groups and a security system that is either completely nonexistent or overworked.

Although self-defense is permitted by Nigerian law under certain restrictions, the rise in citizen-led protest is taking the discussion beyond legal theory. There is a developing crisis of legitimacy as the state seems to be faltering, and villagers, clerics, attorneys, and lawmakers are all embroiled in a heated argument about how far people should go to protect life and land.

Fr. Benjamin Versue, a Catholic priest in Katsina-Ala, Benue State, stood in front of the burned-out remnants of a church rectory that he claimed to have sacrificed everything for in early August. He said that after suspected herdsmen overran Ayetwar village and drove its occupants from their ancestral homes, they set fire to the building. Fr. Versue not only lamented a building on social media, but he also blasted the Nigerian government for failing to safeguard its people.

In a frustrated tone, he added, “Congratulations to the Nigerian army for successfully disarming the people and rendering them vulnerable to their attackers.”

His claims of military collusion are yet unsubstantiated, but they reflect a growing belief in many rural areas that the Nigerian government is incapable or unwilling to defend them.

Farmer-herder conflicts have long been common in Benue, but similar tales of suffering and powerlessness are now coming out of the Plateau, Southern Kaduna, Zamfara, and portions of Niger and Sokoto states—areas where residents claim they are subjected to violent invasions with little to no official response. Many have started to support the right to fight back as a remedy for the lack of state protection.

Every citizen of Nigeria has the right to life under Section 33(2)(a) of the 1999 Constitution, however if someone is killed while defending themselves or others from unlawful violence, that right is not breached.

The use of force in self-defense is permitted by both the Criminal Code (which applies in southern Nigeria) and the Penal Code (which applies in the north), as long as the force is appropriate and proportionate to the danger.

However, when applied to actual circumstances in war areas, this legal certainty starts to become hazy. According to human rights attorney Chioma Nwafor, “the law permits private defense, but it does not permit vigilantism or a free-for-all arms race.” The problem is that individuals in many rural regions believe they have no other option.

The right to self-defense has been supported by a number of recent judicial decisions, but with restrictions. The court emphasized that force must be necessary and not excessive in Ekpoudo v. State (2021).

The Supreme Court dismissed a self-defense argument in Sunday Jackson v. State, concluding that the defendant had engaged in excessive force during a domestic dispute.

Therefore, the legislation establishes a high bar for what constitutes legal self-defense, even while it does not prohibit Nigerians from doing so. What constitutes a “reasonable” defense can become tragically subjective in a nation where assailants frequently operate in huge numbers and brandish automatic weapons.

Former Defense Minister Gen. T.Y. Danjuma caused a sensation in 2022 when he openly counseled Nigerians to defend themselves “by any means necessary” in the event that the government did not. Similar views have since been expressed by governors such as Samuel Ortom of Benue and Aminu Masari of Katsina, who have called for more rights for neighborhood vigilante organizations and even for citizens to have access to firearms under stringent control.

A bill that proposed a framework for civilian gun ownership was brought to the Senate in 2024 and was sponsored by Senator Ned Nwoko.

The law, which is currently being considered, would allow anyone to carry firearms for self-defense as long as they are licensed, undergo a psychological evaluation, and have their backgrounds checked.

Opponents caution that this might result in an increase in violence, unintentional shootings, and gun abuse. Femi Falana (SAN), who contends that arming individuals is insufficient in lieu of police reform and investments in intelligence-led security, stated, “We’re walking a dangerous line.”

The bill’s proponents contend that, after the state’s repeated failures to provide its citizens with the means to defend themselves, it is time for the Nigerian government to do so.

Informal local defense units have formed in several areas of Plateau State; some are led by village youth, while others are supervised by traditional leaders.

There are concerns that citizen-led security may become violent, sectarian, or criminal, even while some communities have been successful in preventing attacks, while others have fallen into cycles of retaliatory killings.

A middle ground is being advocated by civil society organizations, which include bolstering community policing, investing in local intelligence collection, and fostering trust between security forces and rural communities.

According to Jos-based peace-building specialist Fatima Yunusa, “it’s not just about guns.” It has to do with honor. People desire to be heard, seen, and safe.

Today’s agitation in Nigerian communities goes beyond a simple desire for retribution. It is an urgent cry for protection, dignity, and agency. The nation is at a turning point as more citizens begin to doubt the legitimacy of a government that is unable or unwilling to protect them.

Can inclusive security reforms and legal community empowerment help Nigeria strengthen its social contract? Or will it observe as residents take matters into their own hands, sometimes with irrevocable results, and trust continues to erode?

Self-defense is not a purely theoretical issue. It comes to life in the stories of uprooted villages, the remains of a burned church, and the passionate pleas for justice that reverberate throughout a troubled country.

NCAA Grants Gateway Airport Green Light for Commercial Operations

On Friday, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) authorized the Gateway International Agro-Cargo Airport in Ilisan-Iperu, Ogun State, to start operating commercial flights.

To operate scheduled commercial air transport flights at the airport, an interim aerodrome operational permit was granted in accordance with Part 12.15.17 of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations (Nig.CARs).

A significant international airline is anticipated to run two weekly cargo flights from London to the airport after it has been approved. The airport will also be the designated backup airport for Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.

Starting with direct flights to Abuja and Port Harcourt, passenger flights will be introduced.

The action is anticipated to increase Ogun State’s tourism, trade, and investment.

Remember how the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), and Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) visited the airport in December of last year and praised the quality of the facilities installed and their degree of completion?

They deemed the airport to be of international caliber and a source of pride for Ogun State, stating that its facilities, which included the runway, control tower, weather monitoring areas, fire service stations, and the apron, could compete with any of their kind worldwide and that it was still among the best in West Africa.

The Director of Aerodrome and Airspace Standards of the NCAA, who was represented by Ango Mohammed at the time, had observed that the airport’s facilities had much improved since his last visit and were now “at the level of any other tower in every standard airport around the globe.”

To fill the empty seat of the Ibadan North Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, a bye-election will be held on Saturday, August 16, 2025, by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

After the All Progressives Congress (APC) member Hon. Musliudeen Olaide Akinremi (also known as Jagaban) passed away on July 10, 2024, at the age of 51, the seat became vacant.

There will be five political parties putting up candidates for the bye-election, which will be held in the 512 polling places and 12 wards that comprise the constituency.

The five candidates who signed a peace agreement at the Independent National Election Commission’s (INEC) Oyo State headquarters during the week were Adewale Haastrup Olatunji of the All Progressives Congress (APC); Olabisi Olajumoke Odususi of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA); Fola Sunday Oyekunle of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP); Hammed Badmus of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP); and Dexter Femi Akin-Alamu of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Nasarawa Governor Sule Dismisses Claims of Endorsing a Candidate

0

Abdullahi Sule, the governor of Nasarawa State, has declared that God has not revealed the identity of his successor among the 28 candidates vying for the state’s governorship ticket from the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He did, however, promise to make sure whoever succeeds him fulfills their responsibilities.
Sule said this Thursday during a solidarity visit to Government House with members of the Forum of Former Local Government Chairmen and members of the Forum of Former Local Government Councillors.
Perhaps the candidate for governor hasn’t even begun, he said. And it can. However, people observe my genuine affection for each of them, and I am working to ensure that we have someone capable of continuing this status in the same manner as we already do.

The governor emphasized that he has not yet chosen which of the candidates to support, dismissing rumors that he is supporting a certain candidate.

“I am communicating with you. The individual who is capable of providing these possibilities will have my support. God hasn’t revealed that person to me yet, at least not yet. I encourage all of them going to compete, and I am friends with all of them.

Eleven of us ran for office in 2019, and ten of them came out and unwaveringly backed me. He remarked, “I will always be thankful to them for that.”

The governor stated that he would only back the candidate who could maintain the progress made by his administration. He also mentioned that Nasarawa State had a lot of potential and that he would only back the candidate who could take use of it.

“Although we have taken the bare minimum of action, we are making significant progress toward the future. The majority of these institutions are actually just waiting on the president to specify the day he will choose, even if he is sending someone to act on his behalf at the opening of the largest lithium processing facility in Africa.

We have given the state a chance to have a higher IGR as soon as he accomplishes it. Due to the vast amount of chances in Nasarawa, we will continue to open as investors arrive.

“We can now proceed to Riri from there. Riri, which is in Deddere, is likely to be the next big facility. They have begun the construction process already. We are now examining Amba, which will come next. We are proceeding in those ways.

“I can’t be here when all of these are being completed. I pray that, with God’s blessing, the person succeeding me will be able to continue leading the state to create an increasing number of chances.

This is the reason that if someone says, ‘I support this, I support that. It’s just grammar. Individuals are merely sharing their narratives. Initially, they claimed it was Senator Wadada; later, they claimed it was the State’s accountant general; still others claimed it was Dr. Faisal Shuaib. Governor Sule stated, “If you see people pacing back and forth like this, you know there is no truth in any of this, it’s just speculation.”
