The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has re-amended its list of candidates for the Bayelsa governorship election, restoring the names of Timipre Sylva of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who had previously been removed by the commission.

“The Amendment No 2: Amended list of candidates for the 2023 Bayelsa state governorship election pursuant to court orders,” which was published on the INEC website on Monday, was signed by the Commission’s Secretary, Rose Oriaran-Anthony.

On October 31, the Court of Appeal in Abuja overturned Justice Donatus Okorowo’s October 9 decision of the Federal High Court in Abuja, which had nullified Sylva’s nomination as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the Bayelsa governorship election scheduled for November 11.
Following a suit filed by a member of the APC in the state, Demesuoyefa Kolomo, a Federal High Court disqualified Sylva from the contest on October 9.

Oriaran-Anthony explained that the release of the “Amendment No. 2” list, in which the names of Sylva and his ruining mate, Joshua Maciver, were re-added, was in accordance with the Court of Appeal’s decision.

In response to a Federal High Court order, INEC posted an amendment list on its website on Tuesday, Oct. 24, removing the names of Sylva and his running mate.
Oriaran-Anthony recalled that the final list of candidates for the 2023 Bayelsa Governorship Election was amended on Oct. 16.
This, she claims, is in accordance with the Federal High Court’s Order in Suit No-FHC/ABJ/CS/821/2023 regarding the nomination of the APC candidate.

“On October 31, 2023, the Court of Appeal overturned the lower court’s decision in Appeal No-CA/ABJ/CV/1060/2023.”

“By virtue of Section 287 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), the commission is bound to enforce the Orders of Court on nomination of candidates by political parties in the State.”

“The list of candidates in respect of the 2023 Bayelsa State Governorship election is hereby amended in Amendment No 2 pursuant to the judgement of the Court of Appeal” , she stated.

Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, a former federal lawmaker and former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate in the last election, has stated that showing respect for President Bola Tinubu will not prevent him from referring to the former Lagos State governor as a drug dealer.

Many years ago, there were reports linking the president to drug-related activities, but the Supreme Court has refused to rule on such matters.

“Showing Tinubu respect does not mean I will not call him a drug dealer,” he went on to say.

He stated that Nigerians must reclaim their country, emphasizing that they have the legal right to do so.

“Remove Nigerians’ guns and redirect them against Nigeria’s enemies; Nigeria must reclaim the country!”

“The people have sovereignty and power!” Democracy is the right of those who are capable of exercising it.”

The Confederation of All Progressives Congress (APC) Support Groups has urged the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) to call off its planned nationwide strike.

Kailani Muhammed, the group’s Director-General, made the appeal in a statement issued in Abuja on Monday.

According to Muhammed, such planned action could disrupt the country’s entire economic and socio-democratic processes.

“We are using this forum to strongly urge the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the umbrella body of Nigerian workers, to call off its planned strike in response to the physical assault on NLC President Comrade Joe Ajaero in Imo State.”

“We believe that the NLC knows the consequences of the planned strike fully well, more than anybody else,” the secretary-general said.

He claimed that the planned strike would be catastrophic for the country.

According to him, it could derail and stampede the Nigerian economy, causing unnecessary chaos by halting all economic activity in the country.
“The ordinary citizen, whom the NLC protects, will suffer the most.” This is due to the fact that the already high cost of goods and services will skyrocket to unfathomable levels.

“This is dangerous because they cannot be swayed by changing circumstances.” Prices in Nigeria, as we all know, never come down after they rise.

“It is given the above submissions that we are making this appeal, firstly as concerned citizens and, more importantly, as true democrats, whose main focus is the well-being of the Nigerian nation,” Muhammed told reporters.

A few members of the House of Representatives are allegedly attempting to gain admittance into the Green Chamber’s Appropriations Committee by lobbying the National Assembly’s leadership and influential figures in the White House.

It has come to light that the committee’s membership has grown over the past few weeks, allegedly in violation of House rules and upsetting members of the lower house.

It was discovered that there were 57 members on the Appropriations Committee, instead of the 40 that house rules allowed.

The House’s Standing Committee on Appropriations has admitted some chairmen and deputies as members, according to Leadership.

Newspaper reports that the lawmakers became members of the committee
The publication claimed that the legislators joined the committee because of the lucrative prospects that come with being a member, particularly in terms of financial benefits and the chance to smuggle projects into the budget for financial advantage.

But members of the committee on appropriations cannot be chairs or deputies of other standing committees due to House Rules.

It was learned that the chairs of two additional standing committees had already been appointed, and that the states of Edo and Akwa-Ibom each have three members.

Despite the fact that Ebonyi has two members on the committee—a violation of House rules—the report stated that some states have multiple members on the committee.

As per the regulations, the approval committee should consist of a chairman, members from every state and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and other individuals appointed during the state caucus meetings.

With ten members in the House of Representatives, it is understood that the committee was established by the standing orders of both houses of the National Assembly.

In addition to hearings on the budget as a whole, the committee has the authority to appropriate funds for the implementation of government programs and projects.

Leadership was informed by a source in the green room that members have viewed and used the Appropriations Committee as a lifeline for significant personal enrichment.

The source said: “There are about 57 members in the Appropriation Committee of the House now, and with the emergence of some chairmen and deputies of other committees forcing their way into the committee contravenes the standing rules of the house. More members are still lobbying to come into the appropriation. With the prevailing trend, membership of the committee may go above 100.
