CBN asks banks to lift cryptocurrency transaction restrictions.

0

With regard to bitcoin assets in the country, the Nigerian Central Bank has changed its stance and asked banks to disregard its earlier restriction on cryptocurrency transactions.

The apex bank’s Financial Policy and Regulation Department Director, Haruna Mustafa, signed a circular on December 22, 2023, with reference number FPR/DIR/PUB/CIR/002/003, which outlines the guidelines for this.

The document’s title is “Guidelines on Bank Account Operations for Virtual Assets Service Providers (VASPS) to All Banks and Other Financial Institutions.”

Global events have shown that cryptocurrency regulation is essential, according to the central bank.

The press release continued, “The CBN, in February 2021, issued a circular restricting banks and other financial institutions from operating accounts for cryptocurrency service providers due to the risks and vulnerabilities associated with money laundering and terrorism financing (ML/TF) as well as the lack of regulations and consumer protection measures inherent in their operations.”

However, global trends have shown that virtual asset service providers (VASPs), which sell cryptocurrencies and other digital assets, need to have their operations regulated. By requiring the regulation of VASPS to prevent the improper use of virtual assets for ML/TF/PF, the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) updated Recommendation 15 in 2018 in response to this innovation.

Section 30 of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022 acknowledges VASPs as a component of the definition of a financial institution.

In addition, the Securities and Exchange Commission released Rules on Issuance, Offering, and Custody of Digital Assets and VASPs in May 2022 to create a legal framework for their operations in Nigeria.

Because of the aforementioned, the CBN is providing this advice to financial institutions that are subject to its regulatory purview in order to assist them in managing their banking ties with VASPs in Nigeria.

FPR/DIR/GEN/CIR/06/010 of January 12, 2017, and BSD/DIR/PUB/LAB/014/001 of February 5, 2021, the aforementioned guidelines, according to the highest banking authority, are no longer in force.

Furthermore, it reaffirmed that virtual currency transactions, sales, and/or holdings on bank and other financial institution accounts are still prohibited.

Furthermore, it stipulated that the new principles must be immediately followed by all banks and other financial institutions.

Under reference number BSD/DIR/PUB/LAB/014/001, the central bank issued a circular on February 5, 2021, alerting banks to the fact that dealing in cryptocurrencies or processing payments for cryptocurrency exchanges is illegal.

In order to ensure that accounts associated with cryptocurrency exchanges were closed, banks were obliged at the time to identify persons or companies via their systems.

FG to Collaborate with transportation companies to subsidize interstate tickets for Nigerians traveling over Yuletide season

0

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, lauded the Federal Government on Friday for considering collaborating with a few big transportation companies to subsidize interstate travel costs for Nigerians visiting during the holiday season.

On Wednesday, the FG declared that during the holiday season, transportation expenses along 22 interstate routes will be lowered by 50%.

The announcement was given to State House media at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja by Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Mr. Dele Alake, who also served as the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Presidential Intervention’s chair.

Segun Falade, a representative for the National Union of Road Transport Workers, reaffirmed that the union will start implementing the fare subsidies the following Thursday.

According to Alake, President Bola Tinubu ordered that commuters on all train services have free trips from December 21, 2023, to January 4, 2024. The 50% ticket cut was negotiated with luxury bus firms.

In response to the news, Obi expressed gratitude for the mass-assistance initiative in a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Friday. He called it a positive move in the right way.

The former governor of Anambra State, however, voiced worry that there were no safeguards in place to guarantee compliance, claiming that his observations at significant national parks revealed that the transporters were not abiding by the terms of the agreement.

“If fully implemented, as reported, I consider this first-time government intervention aimed at helping the masses to be a step in the right direction,” the man tweeted.

The main issue with these emergency measures, though, is what happens afterwards. Everyone is aware of the exorbitant expense of transportation and the difficulties it causes.

What occurs after the holiday season is the question this seasonal palliative addresses. Exists a long-term policy to protect the general public from the exorbitant prices of transportation as it stands today? There are operational difficulties with even the existing endeavor.

Millions of individuals have already traveled, shouldering the heavy burden and exorbitant expenses associated with it. How will these individuals be paid or receive their refunds?

“I have taken the time to look into the mechanics of implementation across multiple places following the government’s declaration of a 50% discount on interstate transit tickets for Nigerians, but I have been let down.

“Today, I reached out to people who conducted extensive consultations with the transporters in major parks throughout the nation. They conducted on-the-spot investigations in Jabi and Utako areas in Abuja and visited Jibowu, Festac, Mile 12, Ajah, and Mazamaza in Lagos, and none of the transporters there knew about this fifty percent discount.

“The situation is the same in other parts of the country like Kano, Aba, Kaduna, Owerri, and Gombe, as well as at Upper Iweka, Onitsha, which is the main traffic hub in Anambra.”

The LP presidential candidate went on to say that he regretted the fact that a noble attempt like this might be purposefully twisted to make things worse for the general populace.

In the wake of the alleged manipulation, he also challenged the Federal Government (FG) to clarify that their 50% involvement wasn’t only a “spin” to fool Nigerians.

“There are clear concerns regarding this intervention’s credibility. It makes sense that transportation firms will collaborate with policymakers to create a policy that targets the general public, particularly the oppressed.

“I hope this isn’t just another ploy to gain favor with the media after swaying the public opinion. The government of Nigeria cannot continue to ignore the immense misery that the people of Nigeria are enduring.

He said, “Government compassion is a good thing, but it shouldn’t be used as a cover for taking advantage of the government’s inadequacies in order to promote opaque policy implementation.”

Yuletide: Nasarawa police forbid sale, use of fireworks

0

The sale and use of fireworks throughout the state throughout the holiday season has been outlawed by the Nasarawa State Police Command.

In a statement on Thursday in Lafia, issued by DSP Ramhan Nansel, the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Umar Nadada, the state commissioner of police, stated as much.

Divisional police personnel were instructed by Nadada to guarantee complete adherence and enforcement.

“The risks connected with it, such as its potential for use by criminals to incite conflict and commit crimes, make the ban necessary.

He went on, “Others have a high tendency to cause bodily injuries and fire outbreaks.”

The CP issued an immediate cease-fire warning to fireworks vendors and users.

Additionally, he pleaded with parents and guardians to dissuade their kids and wards from purchasing and using fireworks since those found guilty would be subject to the harshest penalties possible.

Fubara: I would’ve punished you long ago – Dele Momodu knocks Wike

0

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike is to be punished, according to an accusation made by PDP chieftain Dele Momodu against the party’s leadership.

When Wike started working against the party, Momodu claimed he would have punished him long ago if he had his way.

This comes following Umar Damagum, the PDP’s acting national chairman, pledging to punish Wike for working against the party at the appropriate moment.

Note that on February 25, Wike backed All Progressives Congress (APC) President Bola Tinubu over PDP Presidential Candidate Atiku Abubakar.

Concerning management of state resources, the minister and Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara have been at odds recently.

His disagreement with Fubara caused 25 of his supporters in the state House of Assembly to defect from the PDP and join the APC, and other commissioners in the state executive council also quit.

But Momodu asserted that Wike’s shenanigans must end and that the PDP leadership cannot stand by while he acts out.

In an appearance on Arise Television, Momodu declared that he would have approved Wike long ago if he had the authority to lead the party.

“Wike deserves to be punished long ago,” he declared, if he had the ability. His continued misbehaviour against the party must have the PDP leadership justifying his retention.

He expresses a desire to consume his cake.

Reps Committee starts enumeration, valuation of public assets

0

In order to guarantee that public assets are valued and enumerated in accordance with the House decision, the Committee on Public Assets of the House of Representatives has started working on the project.

In an interview with reporters in Abuja on Thursday, Rep. Ademorin Kuye, the chairman of the House Committee on Public Assets, disclosed this information.

According to Kuye, the committee made the decision to move quickly in order to retrieve trillions of naira worth of assets from embezzled and abandoned public properties both inside and outside of Nigeria. The committee also stated that this action will assist the Federal Government in executing the 2024 Budget in its entirety.

A resolution was previously passed by the National Assembly’s Green Chamber, which called on the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI) to begin a thorough inventory and appraisal of all public assets.

The House also assigned the Nigerian Institute of Estate Surveyors and Valuers, or NIESV, the same duty of releasing an extensive asset register that would be accessible to the general public.

The chairman emphasised that the Committee on Public Assets is built upon three pillars that define its purpose and stated that the Committee will also assess indiscriminate sales and misappropriation of government assets.

He lists “strong oversight of public asset management and disposal in all the MDAs, guardianship of national assets, and governance of forfeited assets” as some of these.

35,000 wage award: You betrayed us, we’re suffering – Workers to FG

0

The withdrawal of fuel subsidies has generated an economic crisis, and the Federal Workers Forum (FWF) has expressed alarm that the N35,000 salary award that the Federal Government had been giving workers to help ease the effects of this crisis has been discontinued.

On Thursday, the employees said that of the six months the Federal Government had promised them, just one month had been paid.

Comrade Andrew Emelieze, the National Coordinator of FWF, stated in a statement provided to DAILY POST that since the gasoline subsidy was removed, the workers are going through difficult times.

The minimum salary, he pointed out, has stayed at N30,000 per month despite rising prices, with a bag of rice now costing more than N60,000.

Since the termination of the petroleum subsidy, federal employees around the country have experienced difficult times. Because of the growing crisis in the cost of living and the ongoing depreciation of our naira, our take-home income has become obsolete. While the cost of products and services has tripled throughout this time, salaries have stayed the same.

It has astonished us to learn that the meagre wage award of 35,000 naira that the federal government had grudgingly handed to federal workers to help them weather the economic crisis brought on by the elimination of subsidies has been discontinued. Out of the six months promised, the federal government only paid for one.

“As federal employees, we feel deceived by the federal government.” Our boss has shown us a great deal of unfairness and infidelity. It doesn’t seem like we matter to anyone. Since we are citizens and not vagrants, we should be entitled to a fair pay. We feel deceived as federal employees.

“Financially, civil servants have been humiliated. While the cost of everything is rising and a bag of rice now costs more than 60,000 naira, the minimum salary has remained at 30,000 naira per month.

He stated, “Unfortunately, most of the time during this time, salaries are delayed, some workers are prevented from receiving salaries, promotion arrears are not paid, etc.”

Banking stocks drive market capitalisation past historic N40tn

0

On the strength of rising activity in banking stocks, the market capitalization of the Nigerian Exchange Limited surpassed N40 trillion at Wednesday’s closing of business.

The All-Share Index, the exchange’s benchmark index, too reached 73,000 basis points a few days after reaching 72,000 points.

At N40.164tn and 73,397.71, respectively, the market capitalization and the ASI concluded trading with a 1.28 percent increase. GTCO, AccessCorp, Transcorp, FCMB, and United Bank for Africa were the main market leaders on this particular day.

At N12.829 billion, the value of commerce on Wednesday increased by 84.62%. In the same way, there was a growth in the quantity of traded units. The number of deals was 7,910 at the end of trading, up 34.88 percent to 554.64 million units.
Because of the demand from domestic investors, the market cap reached N30 trillion ten months prior to this milestone. First trading day following the presidential election, February 27, saw the market cross the N30tn mark.

Market participants were upbeat about the market’s potential to perform even more in the chat capital discussion.

According to Tunde Amolegbe, Managing Director of Arthur Stevens Asset Management Limited, the market was placing its bets on the reforms carried out by the current administration in response to the historic crossing.

“It is a forward-pricing market, which means that the stock market tends to price policy consequences before they are felt in real time,” he said. So, even while the public is directly suffering from a variety of measures, the market is wagering that these same policies will have a good effect on the economy in the medium to long term, which explains the bullish attitudes that we have seen thus far. Moreover, we have to acknowledge that in the event that this turns out not to be the case, the market may reverse sharply.

It is also necessary to acknowledge that, despite their apparent negative impact on Main Street, rising inflation and the upcoming financial recapitalization programme have been shown to be empirically beneficial for the stock market.

According to Rotimi Fakayejo, an economist specialising in the economics and capital markets, the milestone will likely be surpassed.

“It will rise further,” he declared. Still, before the year ends, we anticipate that the ASI will reach 75,000. For the year-end results of listed firms in 2023, particularly the banks, there are high expectations. This year, there has been appreciation in several banking equities, with some of them hitting all-time highs.

The consumer, telecom, and industrial sectors account for a large portion of the market capitalization; while we have not yet witnessed any changes in these areas, we anticipate higher returns. The market will yet benefit more from the efforts of Dangote Cement, BUA Cement, Airtel, and Nestle. The ASI cannot close below 75,000 basis points while taking all of these factors into consideration. 2023’s market performance will pale in comparison to 2024’s, regardless of the state of the economy. There will be a market boom as soon as international investors start to have faith in the system and start investing their money.

The gainers’ chart was led by Transcorp, Multiverse, Infinity Trust Mortgage Bank, ETranZact and Caverton which gained 10 per cent, 10 per cent, 9.97 per cent, 9.73 per cent and 9.66 per cent respectively.
With losses of 10%, 9.86%, 9.32%, 9.23%, and 9.05%, respectively, Tantalizers Plc, Thomas Wyatt, The Initiates Plc, Juli Plc, and Chams Plc rank among the top five losers.
