The Civil Defense, Fire, Correctional, and Immigration Services recruitment guidelines are being reviewed by the federal government, which has announced that women will now make up 35% of the applicant pool.
At the conclusion of the Board of the Civil Defense, Fire, Correctional, and Immigration Services meeting in Abuja on Friday, January 19, Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo revealed the information.

According to him, President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda was in line with the 35 percent of slots given to women.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps Commandant-General, Dr. Ahmed Audi, the Comptroller-General of Immigration, Caroline Wura-Ola Adepoju, and the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS), Haliru Nababa, flanked Tunji-Ojo, who spoke through the Board Secretary, Ja’afaru Ahmed.

Abdulgafar Jaji, the Federal Fire Service’s (FFS) commandant general, was also present.

The minister stated that the Federal Fire Service would continue to recruit people based on the new guidelines, which would primarily emphasize professionalism, gender mainstreaming, and Federal Character principles.

“The federal government has approved the review of the guidelines for recruitment into and promotion in all four Services under the Ministry of Interior through the Board,” stated Tunji-Ojo.

The Nigeria Immigration Service’s operations have been modernized, which is another development. The modernization will encompass all aspects, including hiring, promoting, training, developing professional skills, building capacity, and implementing cutting-edge technologies.

The minister declared that recruitment timelines for all services would be released by the Services in due course.

Informing prospective applicants that the government is already aware of certain con artists who are requesting money in exchange for fire service recruitment, he cautioned Nigerians not to fall for their tactics.

This is an appeal to Nigerians to avoid falling for con artists. A con artist is someone who requests payment from you in order to be accepted into one of the Agencies. We will pursue them because we are aware of their actions.

The Comptroller-General, Mrs. Adepoju, provided additional details about the Immigration Service’s modernization, stating that the Service will prioritize capacity building and professional specialization to make sure that advancement is not a reward for layoffs.

December 13, 2023, in CotonouThe twentieth (20th) Project Ministerial Steering Committee Meeting will be held in Cotonou, Republic of Benin on December 15, 2023 by the ECOWAS Commission, the Implementing Agency for the Abidjan-Lagos Corridor Highway Development Project. The purpose of this meeting is to evaluate the progress that has been made thus far, make important decisions, and expedite the implementation process.

The meeting will be facilitated by the Honorable Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure of the Republic of Benin, with Engineer David Nweze Umahi, the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s Minister of Works and Housing and Chairperson of the Ministerial Steering Committee, serving as the meeting’s chair.

The newly appointed Honorable Minister for Works and Housing in Nigeria, Engr. David Nweze Umahi, succeeded the outgoing Minister, Honourable Babatunde Raji Fashola. As the ministers in charge of their respective nations’ road infrastructures, the Coordinating Ministers of Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, and Togo will also be present at the meeting.

The 13th and 14th of December 2023 have been set aside for an extensive technical meeting of the members of the Experts Committee of the Abidjan Lagos Corridor Highway Development Project. This committee is composed of engineers and experts from Ministries and Agencies in charge of roads and infrastructure in the five member countries, the ECOWAS Project Implementation Unit (PIU), funding partners including the European Union and the African Development Bank (AfDB), and other funding partners. The meeting is scheduled to take place prior to the steering committee meeting on December 15th, 2023.

The two-day expert meeting will assess the project’s progress since the 19th Experts and Steering Committee meeting, which took place in Accra, Ghana, in May 2023. 785 beneficiaries of the Nigerian Police Force’s Group Life Assurance and IGP Family Welfare Scheme package received checks from the IGP at Force Headquarters in Abuja.
The families of police officers who passed away while on duty during the previous five years have received checks totaling N2.08 billion from Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun.

At the Nigerian Police Force’s Group Life Assurance and IGP Family Welfare Scheme package headquarters in Abuja, he distributed checks to 785 beneficiaries.

Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force spokesman, revealed this in a statement on Thursday.

In total, 2,533 insurance claims of deceased police personnel have been settled by the Nigeria Police Force through the Force Insurance Office. The claims total Six Billion, Thirteen Million, Forty-Three Thousand, Three Hundred and Twenty-Six Naira, Fifty-One Kobo (N6,013,043,326.51k) between June 2023 and the present.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, was praised by the Inspector General of Police for prioritizing police welfare and for ensuring the prudent release of premiums for deceased Nigeria Police Force officers. In a similar vein, he underlined how determined his administration is to continue its efforts to guarantee that insurance proceeds and other welfare benefits are given to recipients on time.

Anambra State Police Command agents shot and killed an unidentified member of a four-person robbery gang.

The suspect was shot dead after he attempted to shoot police officers at a checkpoint with a pistol.

The incident occurred on Sunday in the Igboukwu community in the state’s Aguata Local Government Area. During the incident, a Barreta pistol and dagger were found on the remaining three gang members, who were also arrested.

The suspects boarded a commercial bus from Nnewi and were travelling to an unidentified location before they encountered the police at the checkpoint, according to state police spokesman DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, who verified the incident.

“Police officers affiliated with the Anambra State Police Command have dismantled an armed gang at Igboukwu in Aguata Local Government Area,” he declared.

“Today, Sunday, January 14, 2024, the gang arrived at the police checkpoint on a commercial bus from Nnewi and was stopped for a search.” After stepping out, one of the thugs pulled a Baretta pistol and was shot to death.

“A hidden dagger was discovered after their bag was searched.”

He continued by saying that the State Criminal Investigation Department had been given the order to take over the case for a comprehensive investigation by Anambra Police Commissioner Aderemi Adeoye, who had commended the staff for their alertness.

He brought up the fact that two elderly passengers who boarded the bus at a different location were also ordered to be released immediately by the CP.

“The Command wishes to assure the good people of Anambra State that it will always live up to its responsibility in safeguarding lives and property of all law-abiding citizens in the state,” he added.

In a similar vein, Ubiahuikwem, Ihiala LGA saw the state police command foil an armed robbery operation and neutralise one of the thugs.

This was revealed by state police spokesman Ikenga in a statement on Monday. He also said that the exercise on the alleged robbers was conducted by the police special crack squad that CP Adeoye had stationed in Ihiala.

He reported that two motorcycles and one automatic pump action gun had been taken from the thugs.

The statement said, “Weeks before Christmas, the Anambra State Commissioner of Police deployed the Police Special Crack Squad to Ihiala, where they stopped an armed robbery attempt and neutralised one of the thugs.”

The ancient city had been brought back to peace by the crack squad, who collaborate with the local vigilante, allowing the Ihiala sons and daughters who had come from all over the Diaspora to enjoy the festivities.

In Ubiahuikwem, Ihiala, on the evening of January 12, 2024, a middle-aged man was confronted by gunmen who were attempting to rob him of his car.

“The gunmen, who rode two motorcycles, opened fire on the police when they saw the squad. In order to prevent them from striking the potential target of the armed robbery, the operatives skillfully engaged them before they quickly left the scene.

“The hoodlums yielded two motorcycles and one automatic pump action gun.”

Ikenga added that the Commissioner of Police charged the police squad not to relent in flushing out all criminal elements out of Ihiala and neighbouring communities like Isseke, Lilu, Orsumoghu and Azia.

He continued, “The CP promised the squad ongoing logistical support to ensure it fulfils its mandate.”

In the Megida Onikahun compound, Edun Isale in the Ilorin South Local Government Area of Kwara State, a fire on Monday destroyed 44 rooms and left no fewer than 120 people homeless. The fire also spread to the nearby market.

Thick smoke engulfed the historic building as some Good Samaritans helped remove four elderly people from it.

However, the Kwara State Fire Service reported that no one was hurt during the event, which lasted for over an hour until their personnel extinguished the fierce fire.

Head of Media and Publicity of the state fire service, Hassan Adekunle, said the fire incident which started from a refuse dump in the morning was attended to around 11:08am by the state firefighters.

Adekunle claims that on Monday, January 15, 2024, “the Kwara State Fire Service operatives responded to a fire incident at Megida Onikanhun Compound, Edun Isale, Ilorin South Local Government Area of Kwara State.”Due to a delayed call, the firefighters discovered Edun Market and the entire compound completely engulfed in flames when they arrived. A portion of the fence was taken down to provide improved access and aid in the battle against fires.

An assistant message for more personnel was sent to the Brigade Headquarters at 11:22 a.m. The skilled firefighters were able to control the situation in less than an hour and eventually put out the fire entirely.

According to the investigation, someone who was not identified set fire to trash after mistaking it for innocuous smoke. Regretfully, it had spread to the adjacent compound, complaining that the event, which affected 44 rooms and a mosque in the 75-room Magaji Onikanhun Compound, had rendered over 120 occupants homeless. Thankfully, nobody was hurt, he stated.

At the scene were representatives from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the State Emergency Management Agency, and the Federal Fire Service’s Department of Disaster Management. According to him, the firefighters and market goods were protected from possible looting by the crowd control measures implemented by the NSCDC officers.

After the fire was brought under control, Adekunle said he sent his condolences to Kuranga Adebayo, the representative of Magaji Megida Onikanhun, on behalf of Prince Falade Olumuyiwa, the Director of the state Fire Service.

He said that in order to save lives and property in the state, the director urged the public to always be cautious, particularly during this dry season, and to never hesitate to call the fire department as soon as there is a fire in their area.
