Lukman cries out that Tinubu’s harsh economic policies are making APC unpopular

0

Dr. Salihu Lukman, a former National Vice Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the North-West, has criticized the party for losing support as a result of Bola Tinubu’s policies, which are hardening Nigerians’ lives.

This was revealed by Lukman in a statement, and he cautioned that the party could face internal dissension if nothing is done to address the situation right away.

In order to realign the party with its original objective of becoming a progressive political force in Nigeria, he stressed the significance of APC leaders returning to their prior role as visionary politicians and leading significant political reforms.

In light of this fact, it is difficult to acknowledge that the APC as a political party and President Asiwaju Tinubu’s administration are losing support among Nigerians.

Nobody should be fooled into believing that, given how unpopular we are becoming, there is a chance that regular Nigerians will rebel against us.

“The reality is that the country’s civil society organizations and the political opposition to the APC are both weak, which means that the opposition’s ability to lead the opposition against the APC and President Asiwaju Tinubu may be hazy and desperate, endangering democracy.

“It’s critical that our leaders adopt far more significant political reforms in the nation to reposition the APC and bring it back to its founding vision of becoming a progressive political party in order to avert such danger,” he stated.

Cement bag now cost N15,000 in Federal Capital Territory

Cement bags weighing fifty kilograms now cost between N10,000 and N15,000 in the Federal Capital Territory.

A market survey carried out on Friday in Gwarimpa, Area 10, Kubwa, Lugbe, and Dawaki revealed that BUA cement cost N15,000 and Dangote cement cost N10,000 for a 50kg bag.

According to Yinka Adebayo, a retailer in Gwarimpa, Dangote cement costs N10,000 while BUA costs N15,000.

He claimed to have made N6,000 in January 2023 off of a bag of cement.

“BUA is N15,000, and we sell Dangote cement for N10,000 per bag. Sadly, you’ll be surprised to learn that I made between N5,500 and N6000 last month selling the same bag of cement,” he said.

Rukiyat Abdullahi, a Kubwa retailer, also mentioned that BUA costs N16,000 while Dangote cement costs N10,200.

On Friday, she disclosed, “Dangote is now N10,200 while BUA goes for N16,000 per bag.”

Dangote and BUA cement prices at Lugbe are N10,000 and N15,000, respectively, as the retailers confirmed.

Arc. Musa Dangiwa, Minister of Housing and Urban Development, lamented the nation’s building materials’ ridiculous price increases while this was going on.

He declared that the price increase was intolerable and maintained that the dollar’s fluctuating exchange rate was not to blame.

Remember that for over five months, the Cement Producers Association of Nigeria issued advisories threatening to drive up cement prices to N9,000 per bag due to the Federal Government’s intention to install concrete roads.

This development coincides with Nigeria’s inflation rate continuing to rise. Inflation surged to 29.90%, according to the National Bureau of Statistics’ January Consumer Price Index report.

Akpabio wants Saudi Arabia, Nigeria to work together on security intelligence sharing

0

Godswill Akpabio, the president of the Senate, has appealed to the Saudi Arabian government to share intelligence with Nigeria in the fight against transnational terrorism and insurgency.

Nigeria’s government stands ready to work with Saudi Arabia, Akpabio assured them.

On Thursday, Akpabio made the call while he was formally hosting Dr. Abdullah Bin Hamad Al-Salamah, the leader of the Saudi Arabia/Nigeria Parliamentary Friendship Group, in his office.

“Let me welcome you to the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the Senate President, Mr. Jackson Udom, said in a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media. It gives us great pleasure to have you visit us. Since 1961, Nigeria and Saudi Arabia have enjoyed a robust diplomatic relationship.

Nigeria as a nation requires substantial security assistance from the Saudi Arabian government. Only by exchanging intelligence will we be able to defeat insecurity and transnational terrorism, and I promise that Nigeria’s security architecture is prepared to work with you.

“You would have succeeded in making the world a safe and peaceful place for all of us to live in if you provided intelligence that would aid the fight against insurgency,” Akpabio stated. “Insecurity in any part of the world is insecurity everywhere in the world.”

“Our relationship today has gone beyond pilgrimages and oil,” Akpabio continued, “because Nigerians are now studying and working in Saudi Arabia in various spheres of human endeavors.” It is noteworthy that there are benefits and reciprocal economic ties, particularly in the aviation industry. I would like to congratulate you and the Saudi government on the stability of your economic policies, which have led to Saudi Arabia’s prosperity.

In particular, Akpabio was pleased with the Saudi Arabian government’s Vision 2030 for women’s rights and the significant economic changes in the travel and entertainment industries.

“The Gulf of Guinea is strategically very important to the world, and if Saudi Arabia is unstable, the Gulf of Guinea as a whole will not be stable.” We should support our bilateral relationship because anything you do for Nigeria benefits the entire black population, not just Nigeria.

“I want you to think of Nigeria as a key partner in your quest for economic partners. We are requesting additional investments from you in the fields of ICT, gas, and oil. We would be pleased to work with you and have a relationship with OPEC because, by supporting OPEC, you are assisting Nigeria and the Black community in securing and halting the immigration wave, the speaker said.

The delegation’s leader, Dr. Al-Salamah, had earlier in his speech said that the purpose of their visit to Nigeria, and specifically the Senate, was to deepen their longstanding bilateral relationship with Nigeria and explore new avenues for cooperation and support that would benefit both nations as a whole.

Our purpose in being here today is to identify potential areas for future bilateral agreements and collaborations. One of our most important strategic allies is Nigeria. Saudi Arabia places a lot of importance on Nigeria. We take great pride in its people, culture, and system of governance. In terms of trade, the economy, and international relations, we anticipate Nigeria growing to be a very prosperous nation,” he said.

The Company and Allied Matters Act will be reviewed by the House of Representatives in an effort to improve the functioning of civil society organizations in the nation.

This is a portion of the 10th House’s legislative agenda, which is directed by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen and includes the Open Parliament and Citizens Engagement component.

Abbas stressed the importance of public participation during the agenda unveiling in November 2023, saying, “The 10th House will ensure that legislative processes are transparent and make our records, proceedings, and decisions accessible.” Public confidence in the democratic process is increased when they can observe how decisions are made.

Calls have intensified in recent times for the regulations of activities of CSOs to enable them to play their part in the consolidation process.

To realise this objective, one of the tasks before the lawmakers on resumption of plenary next week is the “Review of CAMA Act and other legislations to remove barriers that hinder CSOs from delivering on their mandate.”

A member of the House Committee on Commerce said the House would identify relevant organisations for partnership on ways to promote openness in the conduct of government business.

The lawmaker who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity, said, “I am sure you are aware that the House already has a good relationship with such bodies as YIAGA his Africa, Follow the Money, BudgIT and a host of others.

Terrorists won’t stop, Until they are stopped — DHQ

As terrorists are causing misery for the populace, particularly in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, Plateau state, and other hotspots throughout Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) stated that people should realize that terrorists will not stop until they are stopped.

But the Nigerian Armed Forces gave its people the reassurance that they are diligently addressing the crisis with the assistance of other security authorities.

At a briefing for the Defense Correspondent in Abuja, Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, provided this guarantee.

Revealing that the situation of insecurity in the country is self-inflicted by citizens, General Buba further said that it was the duty of the military to protect citizens and create a safe environment for them to have a prosperous future.

He said: “The military is conscious of the fact that the ongoing insurgency has contributed to making life worse for many citizens in several geo-political zones, across the country such as the NE, NW, NC, and SE. We also recognize the apprehension occasioned by kidnappings, particularly with recent events recorded in the FCT and other areas.

“Indeed, we may not have all the answers now. However, we assure citizens that we are working assiduously to address the situation both in the immediate and long term to ensure the safety of lives and property”.

The Director also noted that the military is redoubling its efforts to ensure citizens live in a peaceful environment and have a prosperous life.

This, General Buba stressed is achievable and the Armed Forces of Nigeria is focussed on achieving it, adding, “The armed forces would destroy the cancer of terrorism that is ravaging our country thereby creating situations such as is ongoing in the Plateau State”.

He noted that it is on this premise that, the military constantly rejig its operational strategies to adopt the best course of action that would make these ugly experiences a thing of the past.

He said: “We have deployed special forces to some of the hotspots to conduct targeted operations. We have also deployed several battlefield enablers to enhance intelligence and strike capability on these terrorists. We are encouraging the warring fractions to shield their swords. As for the FCT and environs, offensive operations are ongoing at the following locations; Cashew Forest, Kwaku, Gwombe, Gadoro, and Tukuba all in the Kuje Area Council. Other areas covered were Kawu, Igu, Tokulo, Gaba, Zuma 1 and Zuma 2, Shere, Mpape, Jikoko, Berger Quarry, and Nukuchi Villages all in Bwari Area Council of FCT. Additionally, troops covered Numan and Basa in Akwanga and Nasarawa LGAs of Nasarawa State respectively.

“As for the situation in the NC, tension broke out in MANGU in the early hours of 23 Jan 24. The situation escalated and resulted in a break down of law and order in MANGU Town and adjoining communities. The crisis which started from GANGARAN KWATA escalated to other parts of MANGU LGA despite concerted efforts by troops deployed to the general area to restore normalcy”.

During the week under review, Gen Buba said that troops killed 94 terrorists and arrested 171 others. Troops, he added also arrested 43 perpetrators of oil theft and rescued 29 kidnapped hostages. In the South South troops denied the oil theft of the estimated sum of Four Hundred and Eighty Five Million Nine Hundred and Eighty Three Thousand One Hundred and Fifty Naira (N485,983,150.00) only.

NATTS denies dispute over govt agencies’ relocation

0

Vincent Uba, the National Coordinator of the 2023 No Alternative to Tinubu, Shettima, has denounced the comments that followed the Federal Government’s declaration that certain institutions will be moving out of the Federal Capital Territory.

This followed the recent report that the government would relocate the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria from its headquarters in Abuja to Lagos.

A similar announcement was made for the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Uba stated on Saturday hat there was no big deal in the relocation of these government agencies, stressing that the criticisms were a debate of calumny.

He described the act of faulting the government’s decision as politically motivated.

He said, “In every civilised and developed clime, headquarters and all departments of the Federal Government agencies are not necessarily cited in the federal capital. They are located where they have comparative advantage, where there is ease of administration and less logistic costs.

Uba added that the idea for relocation was to ensure the agencies live up to their expectations.

“This President, with his profession and wealth of experience, knows that for agencies and parastatals to function optimally, certain frameworks and structures must be put right, hence an obvious need to relocate some of these agencies or departments to where they have a comparative advantage.

Speaking further, he advised that rather than input tribal sentiments to sound administrative changes, the people should be concerned about the long-term overall results.

Bishop Oluwafeyiropo sentenced to life imprisonment for raping his assistant

0

A Lagos bishop, Oluwafeyiropo Daniels, was found guilty of raping his assistant, a 23-year-old (name withheld), and was given a life sentence by an Ikeja Sexual Offenses and Domestic Violence Court.

Additionally, Daniels, the Bishop of I Reign Christian Ministry in Lagos, was given a three-year prison sentence by Judge Rahman Oshodi for the fourth and final count of the case, which involved sexual assault against a 19-year-old church member.

The judge ruled that the cleric will live out the remainder of his days at the detention center in Kirikiri, Lagos.

The prosecution proved the elements of the two offenses, according to Justice Oshodi.

He says Daniels is dishonest and doesn’t care about the truth.

On count two of the indictment, which involves the rape of another church member (name withheld), the judge, however, dismissed the case and found him not guilty.

According to Oshodi, the church member’s consent was necessary.

Daniels was found not guilty of the fourth count of the accusation, which involved an alleged attempt to rape a church member, by the judge.

Daniels was charged with four revised counts of attempted rape, rape, and sexual assault, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Rape is prohibited by Lagos State’s 2015 Criminal Laws, Section 260 (2).

Reckless politicians frustrated INEC’s IReV portal – Jega

0

“Reckless politicians” allegedly broke into the IReV election result viewing portal during the general election of 2023, according to Prof. Attahiru Jega, a former head of the Independent National Electoral Commission.

During her appearance on Channels Television’s Inside Sources Program on Friday, Jega made her request for an investigation known.

Public criticism resulted from the commission’s inability to submit the election results to the IReV portal promptly during the February 25, 2023, presidential election.

Jega responded to the news by stating that certain desperate lawmakers had compromised the gateway to thwart the commission’s attempts to get it correctly.

Jega stated, “INEC performed admirably in 2023 despite extremely challenging conditions, many of which were brought on by our self-centered politicians who desired to win by any means necessary.

“INEC has over time implemented technology to make the election results process very transparent and integrity-driven, but based on my personal experience serving in INEC from 2011 to 2015, I suspect that a lot of that has persisted up until 2023 as our imprudent politicians attempt to outpace INEC.”

“If you try anything new today, they’ll try to outsmart you and beat you by the next election.
“If you ask for my opinion, I feel very strongly that INEC needs to tell us more about what happened with the IReV.

“In fact, at one point, I was even calling for a thorough public inquiry about what happened with regards to IReV.
“Of course, in order to maintain the process’s integrity, they can also employ strategies and tactics to not only obstruct but also circumvent anything that has been really added.

“I think that something happened; the IReV failed notwithstanding the assurance and polished speech delivered by Mahmood Yakubu, the chairman of INEC.

“I think it was truncated by some of our careless politicians, but INEC will bear the responsibility for that.”

After all court proceedings are concluded, he further requested INEC to investigate what really happened to the IReV platform.
