Shipowners collaborate with NNPCL to buy a vessel

0

Shipowners have partnered with the Nigerian National Petroluem Corporation Limited to boost ship acquisition in the country.

This was contained in a statement on Tuesday after a meeting between the shipowners and NNPCL in Lagos hosted by the Nigerian Chamber of Shipping.

The Managing Director of Nigerian National Petroleum Company, Shipping, Mr Panos Gliatis, suggested that pooling system as a viable approach for Nigerian shipowners to surmount fiscal challenges in ship acquisition.

Gliatis lamented the nonavailability of contracts for shipowners, adding that NNPCL would address the challenges.

“In the next few years, we can hope to see more Nigerian ships and the pooling system is an idea that is in the works. I think it should be discussed and explored because it is a system that assures impartiality, transparency and equal sharing of earnings,” he stated.

He reiterated the need for the two groups to leverage the new arrangement to address the challenges of ship acquisition.

“I hope that we can build on this collaboration as a private company to find solutions with Nigerian shipowners, who are private businessmen as we look forward to achieving more together. This is the hope for everyone and it will be good for the entire shipping industry,” Gliatis added.

Earlier, the President of NCS, Mr Aminu Umar, described the meeting as an opportunity to build collaborations and networks instead of the non-productive approach of confrontation.

“The Managing Director of NNPC Shipping didn’t just come here, but he came with his top management team. He wants to see how we can work together to develop the industry. So, I am very excited and believe this interactive session has been worthwhile. We should engage more because there are lots of opportunities which we are all losing out on.”

“If we are able to engage and we bring all our strengths together, there is high possibility that we will change the way the industry stands today,” the NCS president noted.

On his part, the President of Nigeria Shipowners Association, Mr Sola Adewunmi, lamented that Nigerian shipowners had been unable to attract investors on account of the unavailability of jobs in the sector.

He equally complained that no Nigerian shipowner had participated in the supply of crude oil to Dangote refinery.

Adewunmi stressed that indigenous operators were losing out and the government also lost potential earnings via taxes.

“How do you borrow money from the bank when you are not securing a job that can actually pay for that loan? We have looked at it. One of the ways we can improve shipping is for NNPC to give us the platform to collaborate with international partners.

“If indigenous shipowners do not have the capacity right away, there should be an opportunity for us to collaborate with foreign shipowners to bring this in the process. Our people are undergoing training,” he declared.

The President of Shipowners Association of Nigeria, Mr Sonny Eja, remarked that it was high time Nigerian shipowners shelved their differences and come together to have one body that would explore the pooling strategy.

Eja also asserted that a united body of shipowners would also be more successful in engaging government agencies with a view to addressing the myriad of challenges affecting shipping.

For the Vice President of NCS, Ify Akerele, shipowners needs to collaborate as private entities and individuals in order to avoid the political conflicts that could arise from partnerships as associations.

Akerele also noted that the chamber would continue to engage all categories of stakeholders to address problems affecting shipowners in the country.

PDP, LP interrogate Tinubu’s France private visit

0

On Wednesday, the Peoples Democratic Party and the Labour Party demanded an explanation as President Bola Tinubu departed Abuja for France on what the Presidency described as a private visit.

According to Ibrahim Abdullahi, the deputy national publicity secretary for the PDP, Tinubu chose the worst possible time to travel abroad due to the country’s economic situation and level of insecurity.

This was in response to claims made by Yunusa Tanko, the spokesperson for the LP 2023 Presidential Campaign Council, that the President was ill and that the trip had a secret objective.

For a private visit, President Bola Tinubu left Abuja on Wednesday and traveled to Paris, France.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, revealed this in a statement titled ‘President Tinubu travels to France.’

Although the statement did not state the reasons for the visit, Ngelale said, “He will return to the country in the first week of February, 2024.”

Wednesday’s visit was Tinubu’s third to France since he assumed office eight months ago.

On June 20, 2023, three weeks after assuming office, Tinubu opened his foreign schedule in the city he last visited as President-elect, Paris, the French capital.

During his four-day stay, the Nigerian leader participated in the Paris Summit for the New Global Financial Pact, to “review and sign a New Global Financial Pact that places vulnerable countries on the priority list for support and investment, following the devastating impact of climate change, energy crisis, and after effect of the COVID-19 pandemic,” a statement signed by then-Special Adviser, Special Duties, Communication and Strategy, Dele Alake, read.

In September 2023, the President spent nine days with world leaders in New York, USA, at the 78th United Nations General Assembly, which began on September 19, his first UNGA as President.

Afterward, he proceeded to Paris, France, where he remained for five days, arriving in Abuja on September 29 ahead of Nigeria’s 63rd Independence Day anniversary on October 1.

Reacting, the PDP scribe, Abdullahi, in a phone interview with one of our correspondents on Wednesday, challenged the Presidency to come clean regarding the President’s travel to Paris, France.

He said, “The feelers we are having are that he (Tinubu) has gone for medical treatment as usual because that is where his doctors are. So, we challenge the Presidency to come clean and explain to us the details of his ailment.

“Though he’s been around for some time. We commend his decision to stay back, but we also would want it to be sustained. For now, we are wishing him well but we are asking his handlers to come clean and tell us what exactly is disturbing him, what he has gone for, and how he intends to avoid incessant trips because the machinery of state and the life of over 250 million Nigerians are in his hands.

“We will be concerned as Nigerians because the state of the nation is appalling economically, politically, security-wise, the nation is under siege. This is the worst time for a leader who understands his responsibility or mandate requires of him. These are not the best of times for Nigerians, they are living on imagination first of all from the economic angle. Nigerians are also in palpable tension from the security angle. Nigerians are equally disturbed about even the uncertainty from the political angle.

“What is the state of the nation? What is their presidency, going to shun out for them? How is the implementation of the budget? All of those things are shrouded in mystery. And at a time that we need our president to be around and discharge the functions of his office, as he has sworn to do. We’re not getting him at any time we want him.”

The LP spokesman, Tanko, described President Tinubu’s travel as unacceptable.

According to him, “We are back to another Muhammadu Buhari, who prefers to travel than to lead. The fact is that President Tinubu has a health challenge and they are trying to cover up the health issues. The last time we saw him was when he was in Imo. And I noticed that his hands were shaking. That is to tell you that probably his state of health called to question.”

He continued, “So the fact remains that when you see it shady exit of the President without detailed information, then you must question it. That means that there’s a hidden agenda somewhere.

“So as far as we are concerned, this is completely undemocratic and it is unacceptable. Nigerians deserve to know details about his travels. And at the same time, he must transmit power considering the level of insecurity in the country at the moment.”

Former President Trump wins nomination for Republican Party in New Hampshire

0

Shortly after the polls closed on Tuesday, it was predicted that former president Donald Trump would clinch the Republican Party nomination in New Hampshire by defeating Nikki Haley, his last significant opponent.

In the modern period, Trump is the first non-incumbent GOP contender to win both New Hampshire and Iowa.

As of the writing of this report, Haley was polling 118,027, or 43.7%, while Trump had garnered 146,577, or 54.2%, of the total votes cast.

“I’m very honored by the result,” Trump told Fox News Digital’s Brooke Singman in a statement.

Trump’s rival, Haley, a former two-term South Carolina governor served as U.N. ambassador in his administration.

She congratulated Trump on his victory in her speech to supporters in Concord, New Hampshire, after the race was called, but added the “race is far from over,” as she prepares for a primary in her home state of South Carolina next month.

“I want to congratulate Donald Trump on his victory tonight. He earned it and I want to acknowledge that.

“This race is far from over. There are dozens of states left to go. And next one is my sweet state of South Carolina,” she emphasized.

Meanwhile, as the votes continued to be tabulated, Trump’s margin over Haley remained in the single digits.

Trump made history last year as the first former or current president to be indicted for a crime.

However, his four indictments have only fueled his support among Republican voters.

Insecurity: Tinubu urged to provide amnesty to terrorists, bandits, ethnic militias

0

Bola Tinubu, the president, has been counseled to follow in the footsteps of the late President Umaru Yar’Adua by pardoning the rebels, bandits, and ethnic militias that are terrorizing the nation.

The recent unrest that has been sweeping through large communities in Nigeria, according to Eshanakpe Israel, a.k.a. Akpodoro, will not cease with the resumption of bombardments and strikes on rebels.

Akpodoro, who is recognized as the honorary Mayor of Urhoboland, stated that the Federal Government must now use a “carrot-and-stick” strategy to solving the security problem, noting that military force would not be sufficient on its own.
He said a new amnesty programme coordinated by state governors should be instituted to get thousands of criminal elements in every state to lay down their arms and become part of the community policing structure in their respective domains.

This, he added, “is because it is the best approach to stem the tide of insecurity currently ravaging the coup try”.

Akpodoro said the repentant armed men would be trained by the government under the proposed new amnesty programme and paid stipends monthly for several years “until they are morally fit to eke out a living”.

He added that the same beneficiaries of the programme would in turn be conscripted into civilian components of the state security apparatus.
He said: “Granting amnesty to repentant bandits, insurgents, hostage takers and other sundry criminals will automatically cut down the crime rate in the country and this can begin with a national summit of critical stakeholders on national security to map the strategies for the success of the proposed amnesty programme.”

Akpodoro said the late Yar’Adua would be remembered for his sincerity and boldness in declaring the Presidential Amnesty for the Niger Delta militants.

He added: “Little did the nation know that the non-kinetic approach could stem the tide of the raging military onslaught that was fast metamorphosing into full-blown war.

“Giving the then insurgents shield was the terrain (creeks), which the alien forces couldn’t navigate, giving the militants more impetus to launch an offensive on the oil and gas facilities then.

During those confrontations, the militants broke into camps feeding their central command information and claiming victory most of the time. Jomo Gbomo was handy at every point in time to announce every progress made by the rag-tag militias.

“It was an era marked by ethnic agitations and responses from the government at the time. Then, the military reaction was that of kinetic approach which in every sense of it wasn’t successful as it ended in no victor no vanquish at the declaration of the amnesty programme.”

EFCC charges ex-Anambra Governor Obiano to court on N4 billion fraud allegations

0

In the Federal High Court in Abuja, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has charged former Anambra State governor Willie Obiano with fraud and embezzlement totaling N4 billion.

Arriving in a white bus with EFCC personnel escorting him, was the former governor.

Recall that Obiano was detained at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in 2022 while attempting to take a flight overseas, just hours after he turned over power as governor to Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, his successor.

As a result, the anti-graft agency added him to its watchlist. He faces allegations of misappropriating state monies and charging them to his account.
Part of the charge reads, “That you, Chief Willie Maduabuchi Obiano, whilst being the executive governor of Anambra State of Nigeria between March 2014 — March 2022, sometime between 9th August, 2017 to 4th March, 2020 in Abuja, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, indirectly transferred through Mr Willie Nwokoye, your then principal private secretary, the sum of N261,268,585.00 only from the Anambra State Government Security Vote Account No: 5030050875 domiciled in Fidelity Bank Plc into the Fidelity Bank Plc Account No: 5600062873 belonging to Easy Diamond Integrated Link (an entity that had no business relationship with the Anambra State Government), which funds were dissipated for purposes unrelated / unconnected with the security affairs of Anambra State, which you reasonably ought to have known that such funds formed part of the proceeds of your unlawful act, to wit: (Stealing and Corruption) and you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 15 (2) (b) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011 (as amended) in 2012 and punishable under Section 15 (3) of the same Act.”

Five months after, Nigerian govt yet to free six NYSC members kidnapped by bandits in Zamfara

0

Six National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members are still in captivity five months after they were kidnapped by gunmen in Zamfara.

On August 17, while traveling from Akwa Ibom to Sokoto, eight NYSC personnel were abducted.

The remaining six members have not yet been allowed to return to their own freedom, despite reports that two were set free following apparent ransom payments.

Eddy Megwa, the NYSC’s publicity director, had earlier said that the Nigerian Army had managed to secure the release of some abductees and that efforts were still underway to guarantee the safe return of the remaining four.
However, the lack of progress has intensified scrutiny and criticism of the government’s response to the abduction.

The extended captivity of the NYSC members has sparked fears for their safety, and questions are being raised about the efficacy of the government’s efforts to address insecurity and kidnappings in the country.

A relative of one of the victims, who pleaded anonymity, lamented that their wards were left at the hands of the terrorists in the forest for so long, heightening fears that they might have been killed.

Also, the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) condemned the federal government’s failure to secure the corps members’ release after five months in captivity.

The group said the only way to describe what is happening under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is that Nigeria is not just sick, but it has failed.

HURIWA said: “It is now common knowledge that whenever a citizen becomes a victim of organised and sophisticated crime, such as terrorism and kidnappings for ransom, the majority of observers would say that ‘Nigeria has happened’ to the person.”

It said: “That the current administration would just shut her eyes on these corps members and let their parents and kidnappers be negotiating for ransom; and let these Nigerians stay in the lawless Zamfara forests for five months, and yet President Tinubu hasn’t queried the Inspector-General of Police who is statutorily responsible for internal security, shows that this government attaches no importance to the lives of commoners. This is a crime against humanity.”

N3bn fraud: EFCC alleges that Oyo-Ita, others gave contracts to their own companies

0

In the Federal High Court on Tuesday, Hamma-Adama Bello, the eighth witness called by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, stated that Mrs. Winifred Oyo-Ita, the former Head of Service, and other individuals granted contracts to businesses in which they were involved or had a stake.

Oyo-Ita and others are standing trial on the allegations of fraud regarding duty tour allowance, estacodes, conference fees, and receiving kickbacks on contracts to the tune of N3bn.

Oyo-Ita was in March 2020 arraigned by the EFCC alongside her Special Assistant, Ubong Effiok, Frontline Ace Global Services Limited, Asanaya Projects Ltd, Garba Umar and his companies, Slopes International Ltd and Good Deal Investments Ltd.

Other defendants in the suit are U&U Global Services Ltd, belonging to Mr Effiok, and Prince Mega Logistics Ltd.

They all pleaded not guilty to the allegations levelled against them.

At the resumed proceedings on Tuesday, Bello, who is the Chief Superintendent of EFCC and the Head of Special Investigation Team, was fielded as the eighth prosecution witness.

Led in evidence by the EFCC’s lawyer, Farouk Abdullah, Bello said his team received intelligence from the office of the EFCC’s chairman sometime in 2019 while Oyo-Ita was still a permanent secretary.

“The intelligence bordered on the activities. The 1st defendant was the permanent secretary then, and other staff including Effiok, the 7th defendant.

“The team started the investigation. In the course of the investigation, we called for documents. The nature of the intelligence was such that the 1st and 7th defendants and a host of others were using their office to get contracts for companies they incorporated or had an interest in.”

The witness said the team invited Oyo-Ita and her Special Assistant, Effiok, having received analysed documents relating to the intelligence.

According to him, it was discovered that the 1st defendant was the beneficial owner of two companies: Frontline Ace Global Services Limited and Asanaya Projects Ltd.

Bello also told the court their investigation revealed that Oyo-Ita maintained two accounts in a new generation bank for Frontline Ace Global Services Limited.

“It was discovered that the 1st defendant severally sat as chairman, CEO of Frontline Ace Global Services Ltd where she issued both resolutions to open the said accounts, “ he added.

The presiding judge, Justice James Omotosho, adjourned the matter till January 26 for the continuation of trial.

To the federal, state, and municipal governments, the Federation Account Allocation Committee distributed N1.1 trillion in December 2023.

This was revealed on Tuesday in a press release following the FAAC meeting for January 2024 by Bawa Mokwa, the director of press and public relations at the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation.

According to reports, Dr. Oluwatoyin Madein, the Federation’s Accountant General, presided over the conference.

The N1.1 trillion distributed across the three levels of government, as a result, represents a reduction from the N1.783 trillion distributed in November 2023.

President Tinubu requests US backing for UN Security Council and G20 seats

0

The Federal Government made a request to the United States on Tuesday in order to be granted membership in the G20 and a position on the UN Security Council.

The request was made by President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja during a bilateral meeting with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

Addressing a joint press briefing after the bilateral discussions, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, said the discussions bordered on agriculture, food security, pharmaceuticals, security and Artificial Intelligence.

Tuggar argued that Nigeria, being Africa’s largest economy, deserves to represent the African voice on the UN Security Council as 60 per cent of resolutions passed by the UNSC are Africa-related.

“It is also important to note that President Tinubu brought up the issue of Nigeria’s membership and participation in the G20 as well as the United Nations Security Council,” he said.

Tuggar also disclosed that the bilateral talks included definite decisions on other issues, including the upcoming Nigeria-US binational commission holding between March 11 -13, 2024.

“We’re all aware Nigeria is the most populous nation on the African continent. It has the largest economy and therefore the President will use the 4D Nigeria’s foreign policy agenda of Democracy, Development, diaspora and demography.

“We feel it is necessary and deem it fit for Nigeria to be represented in these decision-making bodies as many as 60 per cent of the resolutions passed by the UN Security Council, in one way or the other, related to Africa, so Africa needs to be represented,” he added.

In September 2022, Tinubu participated in the G-20 summit in New Delhi, India.

G-20, called Group of 20, is an intergovernmental summit comprising 19 countries and the European Union. It is aimed to address significant issues related to the global economy, such as international financial stability, climate change mitigation and sustainable development.

The Group consist of Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, South Korea, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the European Union.
