Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, on Tuesday commiserated with the family of the 49th Ooni of Ife, Oba Adesoji Aderemi, on the death of the last surviving widow of the monarch, Olori Dorcas Aderemi.

Adeleke, in a statement by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, described the passage of Olori Aderemi as a huge loss.

The governor acknowledged the life of service lived by the deceased, saying that she would be sorely missed for her unwavering dedication to traditions and the royal household.

He noted that at the Iyaale Aku Royal House, a position she was elevated to in 2019, her liberal nature was evident in her combination of tradition with her strong Christian faith.

He added that the deceased had continued to play a pivotal role in St. Peter’s Anglican Church, in honouring the legacy of his late husband who was involved in the establishment of the church.

The statement partly read, “Olori Dorcas Aderemi, who passed away at the prime age of 105, was the last surviving wife of late Ooni Aderemi, the first Governor of the Western Region.

“The Governor condoles the Arole Oduduwa, HRM Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi Enitan, Ojaja I, the Ile-Ife traditional council, the Olori Obas, the immediate family and the people of Ile-Ife for this painful loss of Olori Dorcas Aderemi.

Court remands suspected killer of Ekiti conventional rulers

An Ekiti State Magistrate’s Court has remanded a 25-year-old man, Babuga Lede, in the correctional centre for allegedly killing two traditional rulers in the state.

The traditional rulers, the Elesun of Esun Ekiti, Oba David Babatunde Ogunsakin and the Olumojo of Imojo Ekiti, Oba Samuel Olusola, were killed by the gunmen who accosted them; while the Alara of Ara (Ikole), Oba Sunday Fatoba, escaped being killed during the attack along Oke Ako – Irele Road on January 29.

While arraigning the suspect on Tuesday, the police prosecutor, Yomi Osuolale, told the court that “there is probable cause to order the remand of the defendant at the Correctional Centre in Ado Ekiti”.

Osuolale said, “The defendant is reasonably suspected to have committed an offence of conspiracy to kidnap, attempt to murder and murder of Oba David Babatunde Ogunsakin and Oba Samuel Olatunde Ishola.

 

“The defendant also attempted to kidnap Oba Samuel Adebayo Fatoba and Bamidele Ibikunle Joseph (driver).

“The offence is punishable under Sections 280, 241 and 234 of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State 2021, within Ekiti Magisterial District on the 29th day of January 2024.”

Osuolale also told the court that the defendant was arrested in Ikole Ekiti on January 29, with weapons.

He said the duplicate case file had been forwarded to the Ekiti State Director of Public Prosecution for legal advice.

The Magistrate, Olubunmi Bamidele, ordered the remand of the defendant at the Ado Ekiti Correctional Custody pending legal advice from the DPP.

The magistrate adjourned the case till April 24, for further hearing.

The Comptroller General, Nigeria Customs Service, Adewale Adeniyi, has said the need to learn from the lessons learnt while auctioning seized food items in Lagos State is the reason the service is yet to commence the programme outside the state.

The Customs boss stated this on Tuesday while making a presentation at the resumption of the sectoral debate series organised by the House of Representatives.

According to him, President Bola Tinubu has directed the NCS to auction food items seized at the Nigerian borders on their way out of the country, to vulnerable Nigerians, noting that the implementation of the programme kicked off in Lagos, only to be stopped owing to “Some reasons.”

Adeniyi further said that imported seized foodstuff are to be sold to local markets nationwide on the orders of the President

He said, “Mr President has directed that we sell directly to needy Nigerians food items produced locally but which were seized. This is one of the ways to address hunger and food scarcity we are facing. We have started this in Lagos.

“Also, the President has also directed that imported food items seized by the Nigeria Customs Service should be sold back to the local markets for resale to Nigerians.”

Fielding questions from lawmakers in a session presided over by Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu, Adeniyi gave reasons while the programme was temporarily discontinued by the NCS.

“We started in Lagos but you know what happened. There was a stampede. No matter the number of bags of rice you share or sell, it will not be enough.

“We have to focus on one place at a time. We will use the lessons we learnt in Lagos to coordinate this programme when we resume,” he said.

NCS arrested 120 trucks of smuggled grains in two weeks

Adeniyi also informed the lawmakers that the Service arrested 120 trucks conveying smuggled grains out of the country.

“We arrested in two weeks about 120 trucks of food items going out of the country. These are the food items Mr President has asked us to give back to the local markets where the arrests were made. We believe this will drive down the price of food items in these places,” he added.

Food scarcity came too early

Meanwhile, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, has said that food scarcity came too early this year, noting that “It often rears its head in May/June but it came quite early this time.

This is just as he blamed the food scarcity being experienced across the country on smuggling, flooding, the naira redesign policy and the COVID-19 pandemic which ravaged the world in 2019.

The minister, who stated this at the Sectoral Debate series on Tuesday, noted that the naira redesign policy implemented by the government of Muhammadu Buhari denied small-scale farmers access to cash to pay for their harvest towards the end of 2022 as well as pay for cultivation during the commencement of the wet season.

This is just as he said that insecurity in the country culminated in low cultivation of land, as many farmers were displaced from their rural habitation.

To address the challenges faced by farmers nationwide, Kyari assured Nigerians that President Tinubu has mandated the Ministry to make grains available both for cultivation and consumption.

“We have engaged the World Food Programme to help stabilize prices. We also asked them to assist our farmers to produce more food.

“But we want our farmers to take advantage of irrigation facilities to do all-season farming and the President has been very supportive of this,” he said.

Tinubu guarantees to study retired law enforcement officials’ pension,

President Bola Tinubu has said that he will ensure an immediate review of the pension and severance packages of retired police officers to reflect the enormity of their contributions and commitment to the country.

Tinubu also said that his administration will begin processes to issue an Executive Order to set aside a day between March 5 and April 1, to be officially regarded as National Police and Veterans’ Day in the country.

He stated these during his address at the official launch of the Police Veterans’ Foundation, at the headquarters of the Police Service Commission in Abuja, on Tuesday.

The President, who was represented by the Minister of State for Police Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, promised his full support for the Veterans’ Foundation, describing support for the retirees as obligatory and “a moral imperative” for government at all levels, and well-meaning members of the society.

Tinubu said, “Supporting and assisting the police veterans is rather a moral imperative, nay obligatory on government at all levels, including well-meaning members of the society.

“I must acknowledge that without these veterans, Nigeria would have no doubt descended into a Hobbesian state of nature where life is brutish, nasty and short; and only the fittest and strongest survive.

“We are further reminded that the idea of citizenship carries with it a sense of responsibility and patriotic duty.

“It is incumbent on us, therefore, to acknowledge the efforts, heroism and sacrifice made by those who gave their all, so that we may have peace and security in Nigeria. One of such responsibilities is supporting and sustaining the Police Veterans’ Foundation to enable the attainment of its noble objectives of giving a better life and hopes to our Police retired officers that will cushion the effects and burdens of post-service challenges.

“As the President of our dear country, I will not only give my full support to the Veterans Foundation but will also ensure that such areas as improving the pension and severance package of retired police officers, are immediately reviewed to reflect the enormity of their contributions and commitment to our country.

“Also, administrative processes towards issuance of an Executive Order will be immediately initiated to set aside a day, perhaps, 5th March (being today, the launch of the Veterans’ Foundation) or 1st April (being the date that the hitherto existing police forces of Northern and Southern provinces were amalgamated to form a unified Nigeria Police Force), as National Police and Veterans’ Day in Nigeria”, he said.

Speaking earlier, the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, and former Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, said the Foundation was established to address the post-service challenges of the retirees, particularly health and financial challenges, and provide assistance for families of deceased officers.

He urged Nigerians to support the Foundation, not only to help the veterans but also to spur dedication and commitment in the serving officers.

“I, therefore, urge everyone to get involved in this noble act of humanity and humaneness by supporting the Foundation in putting smiles on the faces of our veterans.

“This will not only help them to age gracefully in comfort and dignity, but it will also spur the serving police officers to greater dedication and commitment, knowing that the society they are giving their best appreciates and honours them in retirement”, he said.

Joseph Aloba, father of late singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, aka Mohbad, has distanced himself from individuals who claimed to be his lawyers and appeared in court without his consent.

Aloba, who made this known in a statement sent to According Online on Tuesday, said he did not authorise any legal representation aside from the legal team hired by his family.

The statement signed by a member of the legal team, Monisola Odumosu, stated that the disclaimer became necessary after someone paraded himself on social media and identified himself as a counsel acting on behalf of Mohbad’s father.

Odumosu quoted Aloba as saying that anyone or group seeking to take any action about Mohbad’s case must seek the consent and approval of his legal team.

The statement read, “Our attention has been drawn to a certain individual on the social media platform particularly TikTok parading himself to be working for a group on behalf of our client, Mr. Joseph Aloba.

“It is our client’s instruction that he has not engaged anyone, a law firm or an NGO to represent him either in court or any other place in matters relating to seeking justice on the death of his late son, Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba (Mohbad) other than his current legal team which have been properly briefed on all matters relating to procuring justice on behalf of his late son.

“Mr. Aloba said anyone or group who wants to take any action about the Mohbad matter must seek the consent and approval of his legal team whom he said have been doing the legal work diligently and to his satisfaction. Mr. Joseph Aloba has not given anyone or a group his consent to represent him.”

The statement added that the deceased’s family was not unaware of what it described as subterranean moves to scuttle the process of justice in Mohbad’s matter.

The legal team noted further that it was desirous of ensuring that spoilers were not allowed to destroy the blocks of justice being built for the case.

“Please we urge the public to ignore anyone or group that claims to be acting on behalf of Mr. Joseph”, it added.
