Ladies residing with HIV/AIDS lament discrimination

0

The Association of Women Living with HIV/AIDS and APIN Health Initiatives, have lamented the alleged discrimination against women living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus/ Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome by Nigerians.

The ASHWAN stressed that discrimination against victims of HIV/AIDS was a serious issue which should be addressed by the stakeholders.

The group, however, strssed the need to further promote gender equality for the development of the country.

The group’s Coordinator, Mrs Catherine Agboola, made the call while speaking at the commemoration of the 2024 International Women’s Day, held in Akure, Ondo State capital, on Friday.

The IWD is celebrated on March 8 annually.

The official theme of the day for the United Nations is ‘Invest in women: Accelerate progress.’

Agboola said, “The objective of this day is to advocate for increased investment and accelerate progress for women and girls in all their diversity through a society free from stigmatisation and discrimination against people living with HIV and AIDS.

“It is a very serious issue, and it is one that we all need to work together to address. ”

Calling for more sensitisation on gender equality in society, the ASHWAN Coordinator explained that gender equality is not only a fundamental human right but a necessary foundation for a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world.

“Gender equality is not only a fundamental human right but a necessary foundation for a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world.

“There has been progress over the last decades as more girls are going to school, more women are serving in parliament and positions of leadership, and laws are being reformed to advance gender equality, despite these gains gaps still remain across all regions and now is the time to stand up for gender equality, ” Agboola advocated.

The Ondo State Head of APIN Health Initiatives, Dr Folake Adurogbola, said the United Nations designated the year 2024’s theme as ‘Invest in women: accelerate progress’ with a focus on addressing economic disempowerment, while the campaign theme for this year is ‘Inspire Inclusion.’

While expressing concern over the prevailing harsh economy, Adurogbola declared that women must engage themselves in positive ventures such as business, skills acquisition and meaningful ideas that will propel them to higher ground.

She said, “Our women can’t afford to be lazy at this time because we know the economic situation in Nigeria is biting hard, so, this is not the time for women to sit down and expect the man to take responsibility 100%. They should also do something. Even, if it involves selling pure water, hawking it. They must be seen to contribute to the family and it will ease the burden on the home and the man that is the sole provider for the home.

“You can’t afford to be a housewife at this time, even if your husband says he doesn’t want you to work, try to do something while at home. There are lots of stay-at-home jobs now on the internet. Take advantage of technology, and social media to sell your products and support our homes. This is not a time for excuses.

Besides, Dr Adurogbola noted that investing in the health and well-being of women and girls first requires adequate investment in health overall

Also speaking at the event, the representative of the PIND Public Health Initiatives, Adijat Suraju, called for the participation of more women in walks of life to help close the huge gender disparity in society.

Suraju said “Let’s celebrate women in government, technology, and digital settings to mention a few and let’s give room for more participation of women in all works of life to help close the huge gender disparity.

“Gender equality enables and accelerates women’s equality and empowerment and can define how women’s involvement, participation, leadership and collective actions can make a difference for the women, their children and the entire universe as women are generally multipliers.

“In addition, this action calls for drive progress towards gender equality, equity and empowerment through the power of collective action by the women, for the women and with the women, all across the globe”.

Lawyer urges EFCC to probe Buhari’s cupboard members

0

Human rights lawyer, Pelumi Olajengbesi, has urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to probe all cabinet members and appointees who served during the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Buhari, the immediate past president, served a two-term of eight years from 2015 to 2023.

In a statement on Friday, Olajengbesi, who is the Managing Partner of Abuja-based law firm, Law Corridor, said the probe had become imperative with the startling revelations arising from the trial of ex-Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele.

According to him, there is a need for the EFCC to audit the financial transactions of all officials of government who served under former President Muhammadu Buhari.

He also commended the EFCC for exposing the alleged forgery of Buhari’s signature and that of ex-Secretary General of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, by the embattled former apex bank boss, who is enmeshed in a $6.2m fraud for foreign observers in the last poll.

Olajengbesi said, “The audacity of those in power and their criminal influence is becoming too much and must be stopped.

“The EFCC must not stop at just the former CBN Governor Godwin, Emefiele, but should carry out an entire audit of principal actors who served under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari. There should be a deterrent for bad behavior.

“Again, the case of the suspended Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Rural Electrification Agency, Ahmad Salihijo over alleged N1.2bn fraud is fresh, and a pointer to the gross abuse of power by those who served under Buhari.

“Emefiele and all those who served under the Buhari adminis8⅞ÿÿtration should be properly audited and given a chance to clear their names as the corruption that manifested under that government is gargantuan.”

Already, three witnesses have testified against Emefiele with the latest being an EFCC official and a forensic document examiner, Bamaiyi Haruna, who told the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Maitama on Thursday that his analysis of some documents used to release $6.2m from the CBN in February 2023 showed that the documents were forged.

The other witness was ex-SGF Mustapha, who also told the court that neither he nor ex-President Buhari were aware of the $6.2m, adding that Buhari’s signature was forged to move the money out. The third witness was a deputy director at the apex bank,  Onyeka Ogbu.

The EFCC, on June 18, 2023, arraigned Emefiele on amended 20 counts, in which he was accused of impersonating Mustapha to illegally move $6.2m from the CBN vault.

In the charges, the EFCC alleged that on February 8, 2023, Emefiele connived with one Odoh Ocheme, who is now on the run, to obtain $6.2m from the CBN, claiming that it was requested by the SGF “vide a letter dated 26th January 2023 with Ref No. SGF.43/L.01/”.

N5bn palliative shall be disbursed transparently, says Ogun commissioner

0

The Ogun State Commissioner for Finance, Dapo Okubadejo,  has assured residents of the state of transparent distribution of the N5 billion palliative intervention of the state government.

Okubadejo, who is also the Chief Economic Adviser to Governor Dapo Abiodun, made this pledge while appearing at a guest forum organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Ogun State Council, on Friday

He disclosed that he has heard of complaints regarding the disbursement of the government’s gesture, stressing that “all ‘I’s will be dotted and ‘t’s crossed.”

It was gathered that some quarters, especially students have frowned at the process of the disbursement of N50, 000 palliative to indigent students across the country.

The students are alleging attempts by some government officials to defraud and prevent the students from getting what is due to them.

Okubadejo said,” On the N5 billion palliative, I think the government has set up a committee and we will involve all relevant stakeholders and if you are concerned about any part of the distribution process at all, I know the government is ready to listen and make amends. The money is really not much but just see it as the first of such many initiatives to come.

“The register that will be used by the ministry of education is currently being compiled and a lot of validation is being done in the register. Some of the students have raised concerns but be rest assured that this will be done transparently. The reason the current list is being used was to start the programme immediately.

“ In fact, we are also leveraging technology for proper identification and that is why we are using BVN and NIN in this scheme. Be rest assured that this process will be done transparently.”

Speaking on the achievement of the government in the last five years, Okubadejo stated that the establishment of six additional economic development clusters positioned the state as an industrial capital

He added that the government had initiated the Economic Development Clusters, and partnered with the private sector to develop essential infrastructure, reduce costs, and provide companies with comprehensive support in providing power, water, and security.

Highlighting the state’s significant digital transformation that simplifies transactions for residents and businesses he said, “The key initiatives include the digitalization of business premises permits and Certificate of Occupancy (C of O), as well as holistic reforms in land processes to promote transparency and streamline transactions, thereby attracting investments into the state.

“Ogun state has witnessed remarkable financial growth with our Internally Generated Revenue, soaring from 50 billion in 2020 to over 130 billion in 2023.”

Earlier, the state NUJ Chairman, Comrade Wale Olarenwaju, said the purpose of the Forum was to provide a platform for interaction between the government and the governed.

He noted that Governor Abiodun-led administration had recorded many achievements that placed the state ahead of others, making the ISEYA mantra an envy of others.

Frequency of abductions in Nigerian colleges alarming -UN

0

The United Nations Children Fund has condemned the abduction of students by bandits in Kaduna State.

It said the alarming frequency of such incidents across the country signalled a crisis that requires immediate and determined action from all.

UNICEF said it is coordinating with local officials and providing assistance to the affected parents and families through psychological support services.

Over 280 pupils and teachers of Government Secondary School and LEA primary school at Kuriga, Kaduna State were abducted by bandits.

The bandits reportedly invaded the Kuriga area of the Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State on Thursday, shooting at their victims before taking away at least 280 of the pupils and teachers from both schools.

UNICEF Representative in Nigeria, Cristian Munduate, in a statement said, the alarming frequency of such incidents across the country signals a crisis that requires immediate and determined action from all levels of government and society.

Munduate said, “I am deeply saddened and concerned by the reports of yet another abduction of students in Kaduna State. The alarming frequency of such incidents across the country signals a crisis that requires immediate and determined action from all levels of government and society. Schools are supposed to be sanctuaries of learning and growth, not sites of fear and violence.

“This latest abduction, as any previously, is highly condemnable and part of a worrying trend of attacks on educational institutions in Nigeria, particularly in the northwest, where armed groups have intensified their campaign of violence and kidnappings. Just a day prior to this incident, the UN Resident Coordinator spoke about the abductions of large numbers of women, girls, and boys by members of a non-state armed group in Borno state.

“UNICEF urges immediate action to ensure the safe return of the abducted children and staff and calls on authorities to implement comprehensive measures to secure schools across Nigeria. It is imperative that the safety and security of students and educators are guaranteed, allowing schools to fulfill their role as safe havens for learning and development.”

She stated that the right to education is fundamental and must be protected against any form of violence or intimidation.

“Our hearts go out to the families of the abducted students and staff, and we stand with them in this harrowing time. The right to education is fundamental and must be protected against any form of violence or intimidation. The children of Nigeria deserve to learn in peace.

“UNICEF is coordinating with local officials and providing assistance to the affected parents and families through psychological support services. The UN Children’s Agency is dedicated to collaborating with government entities, local communities, and various partners to tackle the fundamental issues leading to violence against children and to safeguard educational environments from threats and violence.

“Every child deserves to grow up in an environment of peace, away from the looming shadows of threats and insecurity. Unfortunately, we are currently facing a significant deterioration in community safety, with children disproportionately suffering the consequences of this decline in security,” she added.

Former UK PM, Theresa Could to give up parliament

0

Former UK Prime Minister, Theresa May, on Friday announced that she will stand down as a member of parliament at the next general election, due to take place later this year.

May, 67, is the most senior member of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s Conservative party to announce they will not seek re-election.

The Tories have consistently trailed the main opposition Labour Party since October 2022 and are widely seen as on course to be dumped out of power after 14 years.

May has represented the constituency of Maidenhead in southeast England since 1997 and served as prime minister between 2016 and 2019 – a tumultuous period in the UK as it attempted to negotiate its departure from the European Union.

“It has been an honour and a privilege to serve everyone in the Maidenhead constituency as a member of parliament for the last 27 years,” she said in a statement to the local Maidenhead Advertiser newspaper.

“Since stepping down as prime minister I have enjoyed being a backbencher again and having more time to work for my constituents and champion causes close to my heart including most recently launching a Global Commission on Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking.

“These causes have been taking an increasing amount of my time.

“Because of this, after much careful thought and consideration, I have realised that looking ahead, I would no longer be able to do my job as an MP in the way I believe is right and my constituents deserve,” she added.

May served as interior minister between 2010 and 2016 under then-leader David Cameron.

But he resigned immediately after Britain voted to leave the EU on June 23, 2016, and May became prime minister less than a month later.

She called a general election in 2017 to try to break the logjam over the terms of Britain’s departure from the EU, but the vote ended in a hung parliament.

Unable to get her deal through parliament, her Conservative party suffered a drubbing in European elections in May 2019, leading to her resignation.

While dominated by Brexit, May was also in charge during terror attacks in London and Manchester, and when fire ripped through the Grenfell Tower block in the UK capital killing 72.

According Online had resigned as the prime minister in an emotional address that she would step down as Conservative leader on June 7 after failing to persuade MPs to support her Brexit deal.

Among the many popular trading styles with both beginners and experienced traders are scalping, which allows you to extract small portions of profit from each price movement, and day trading, which aims to trade over a single day. In this article, you will learn what scalping and day trading are and their differences and peculiarities. Ultimately, you will learn what to look for to understand which trading style is right for you.

Most likely, you have already encountered such concepts as scalping and day trading. Today, we will look at these trading styles in more detail.

A trader’s earnings depend not on time but volatility (market price movements). Depending on the amount of volatility a trader uses, there are two trading styles:

  • Day trading—positions are opened intraday, and the trader does not leave the market without closing trades.
  • Scalping—multiple trades within a short period. A scalper can make up to 100 trades per hour.

The main scalping and day trading criteria that determine the effectiveness of a trading approach:

  • The riskiest traders make a lot of trading decisions within one minute. Others may spend several hours on just one trade.
  • Volatility timing. The prominent swings occur at a predetermined time, either at the junction of trading sessions of different time zones or at the moment of economic news release. In addition, each trading session has its unique style of price changes.
  • The more often a transaction is made on the currency market, the more commissions a trader pays. The commissions are minimal precisely because of excessive liquidity on super liquid instruments such as EURUSD, USDJPY, GOLD, and BTC.

Let’s look closer at these two trading styles and try to understand the differences between scalping and day trading and the profit and risk levels.

What is scalping?

Scalping is a modern style of trading which involves extracting profit from small price movements within numerous transactions. A distinctive feature is the high intensity of transactions. An aggressive scalper can open dozens and even hundreds of positions per day. Targets are small, from a few pips to several points. Almost all positions are closed during the day. Timeframes up to M15 are used; most often, M1–M5.

This trading style is most widespread among players in the Forex market, which is the most liquid round-the-clock marketplace. Here, the rules of classic scalping were invented, which involve trading on all micro-movements that exceed double spread and commission costs, exiting a position at the slightest trend reversal, and the habit of closing all positions overnight to lock in profits at the end of the day. Closing positions overnight ensures protection from the morning gap and allows sleeping well at night without considering the results of night trading.

Speed is another essential factor for scalpers, no less critical than liquidity, so the choice of broker is crucial. A scalper constantly analyses price charts and makes decisions based on this data, so the broker must provide quick access to the information necessary for analysis: prices, news, charts of foreign indices, signals, statistics, etc. As a consequence, fast scalping trades require an intermediary with an unloaded server so that, at the right moment, your request does not wait for a few crucial seconds for its turn.

What is Day Trading?

Day trading is speculative trading on the stock exchange during the trading day without carrying over open positions to the next day. Traders use only intraday operations, where the trade duration usually ranges from a couple of minutes to several hours. Trades are also rarely carried over to the next day.

Most often, a combination of different timeframes is used. It can be, for example, M1 and M15, M5 and M30. Trade entries become more accurate in Day trading, and the Risk Reward Ratio improves. The intensity of trading is much lower compared to scalping. A day trader usually opens trades at the beginning of the trading day and closes them when the trading session ends. He in no way carries open positions through the night.

Some day traders trade only on the trend (this style is best suited for inexperienced traders). In contrast, others trade in a range in both directions, using price fluctuations in the channel between support and resistance levels for profit. Highly skilled and completely inexperienced traders also play against the market (counter-trend trading). While experienced market participants can profit from such high-risk trading, novice traders can lose their entire deposit.

How to choose?

Two key parameters to consider when choosing—your temperament and the availability of free time—affect the ability to follow the market.

Choleric/sanguine people make excellent scalpers, as scalping methods imply a good reaction to the appearance of a signal and quick fixation of profits. People with this temperament are not characterised by patience and diligence, so an abundance of quick trades is needed.

More calm people scalping will seem too aggressive. The need to react quickly to changing market conditions will cause discomfort. Intraday trading is more suitable for phlegmatic/melancholic people. There are far fewer deals; there is time to decide, and positions are kept open longer. From a trading psychology perspective, it is also important that the profit in each trade is more significant. A trader working in intraday style does not wake up at 5 a.m. thinking he has missed all the entry points. On the contrary, the schedule is built so that they have time to sleep, not to be in a hurry, and to balance trading and their personal lives.

Scalping and day trading is a question that concerns most novice traders. These are some of the most popular trading styles, which, on the one hand, have their advantages and disadvantages, and on the other hand, when honed in practice, can bring significant gains in both the short and long term. Every trader is an individual in his interests in the market, and in pursuit of his goals, he can try different trading styles and strategies and decide which one suits him best.

AIDS Healthcare Foundation Nigeria said it will be engaging with women across 154 facilities in the seven areas of operation – FCT, Anambra, Akwa Ibom, Benue, Cross River, Kogi and Nasarawa states, to commemorate the International Women’s Day.

AHF also said it will distribute free sanitary pads to women in its engagement programmes.

The IWD is celebrated on March 8 annually. The official theme of the day for the United Nations is ‘Invest in women: Accelerate progress.’

The engagements with the women at these locations will empower women to take charge of their health while overcoming barriers to help them thrive.

A statement by the Advocacy and Marketing Manager of AHF, Steve Aborishade, on Friday noted that there is a need to recognise the incredible strides women have made towards equal rights, including access to healthcare, while remembering that the world still has a long way to go before women are empowered, safe, and healthy worldwide.

“To commemorate IWD, join AHF Nigeria as we hold engaging and purposeful IWD conversations with the women on our programme across 154 facilities in the seven states of operation in Abuja – FCT, Anambra, Akwa Ibom, Benue, Cross River, Kogi and Nasarawa states.

“The engagements with the women at these locations will empower women to take charge of their health while overcoming barriers to help them thrive.

“AHF Nigeria’s International Women’s Day event will include Continuous Medical Education by AHF Nigeria state teams and psychosocial coping mechanisms to empower the women and enhance their resilience in the face of the daunting challenges many are faced with. Free sanitary pads will be distributed to the women in attendance,” the statement partly read.

The AHF Nigeria Country Programme Director, Dr Echey Ijezie said, ‘’The need for more inclusive and equitable world for women and young girls cannot be over-emphasised, particularly the need to shed the suffocating stereotypes, stigmas, and discrimination that keep women and girls worldwide from realizing their true potential and succeeding.

“It is thus important to ensure that women have all they need to succeed, including equal access to health care, education, and employment.”

According to UNAIDS, women and girls make up a disproportionate amount of people living with HIV globally. In 2022, 4,000 girls and young women aged 15 to 24 worldwide acquired HIV every week.

“The theme this year resonates deeply –’Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress.’ It’s a call to action.

“This is the time to invest in women more than ever.

“Accelerating progress in any sphere requires that women have to be more involved.

“That is why I see investing in women, not as charity, but a strategy to build the future of our dear nation, Nigeria.”

Mrs Tinubu further called for increased access to education, resources, and opportunities for women.

She also stressed the importance of dismantling economic barriers and ensuring women’s voices are heard.

The statement added, “Equipping you with education, resources and opportunities to unleash your full potential, supporting your businesses, helping to dismantle economic barriers, and ensuring your voices are heard is a very crucial step.

“Therefore, my question to all women is: what are you doing to help the other woman? How are you investing in her?

“Let us all come together, bond and love one another. This is the pathway to accelerated progress. I charge all women; just pull a sister up, one at a time. You will be amazed what we can achieve collectively.”

According reports that the United Nations, while marking the International Women’s Day, decried the injustice, discrimination and marginalisation that billions of women and girls face.

In an OP-ED, the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, said there was a need for “public and private investment in programmes to end violence against women, ensure decent work, and drive women’s inclusion and leadership in digital technologies, peacebuilding, climate action, and across all sectors of the economy.”
