Customs collaborating with different companies to battle starvation in Nigeria — CG

The Nigeria Customs Service has said that the service is collaborating with other Federal Government agencies in the fight against hunger in the country.

The Comptroller General of the NCS, Mr. Bashir Adewale Adeniyi stated this while briefing newsmen in Kano on Friday.

Adeniyi, who was in Kano for an official visit, explained that the service was working assiduously to ensure adequate management of the nation’s borders to safeguard industries as well as protect the agricultural sector.

According to him, the agency was collaborating with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and other related stakeholders to ensure maximum food security in the country.

“We are not working in isolation, we are collaborating with other Federal Government ministries and parastatals to ensure adequate food security in the country,” the CG said.

Adeniyi noted that the service was also working closely with the border communities to ensure timely intelligence information which will be useful in curtailing smuggling of food and other contrabands.

He said as part of the effort to enhance effective community relations between the Nigeria Custom and border communities, the service will construct schools and health facilities to achieve the desired objectives.

“Six big projects would be sited at the border areas through special intervention provision,” he said.

The Comptroller General added that the NCS had begun roundtable meetings with leaders of the grains market to fine-tune modalities of addressing hikes in foodstuffs prices.

Be vigilant towards explosives, DSS cautions Nigerians

The Department of State Services on Friday urged citizens to be vigilant against public dangers, especially Improvised Explosive Devices.

IEDs are like locally made bombs used by bandits and terrorists to terrorise security agents or civilians alike in North East and North West regions of the country.

According to data presented at the North East Security Meeting in 2023 by a security consultant, Group Captain S.G Shehu revealed that in 2023, Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe recorded 376 ordinance explosion incidents, resulting in 151 civilian casualties.

Shehu also noted that in 2022, not less than 639 explosions occurred with 223 civilian casualties in the three states.

However, the DSS on Friday called on Nigerians to steer clear of crowded or suspicious areas.

The Director, PR & Strategic Communications Department of State Services National Headquarters, Peter Afunanya, disclosed this in a statement to felicitate the Muslim faithful on the commencement of Ramadan and the Christians for the Lent period.

Afunanya urged citizens to report any strange activities or movements to the security agencies.

The statement partly read, “Residents are advised to remain vigilant against public dangers especially Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs)

“Also, the general public is urged to stay informed about potential threats; avoid crowded or suspicious areas, and report to relevant security agencies any strange objects, activities, and movements of hostile elements. In the same vein, the Service calls for tolerance, bonds of brotherhood, dialogue, and peaceful coexistence among the populace.”

Afunanya assured Nigerians that the DSS would provide intelligence to other security agencies to ensure the country is safe and secure.

He said, “Overall, the Service recommits to the provision of strategic intelligence to other sister agencies in order to achieve a safe and secure country. As we undertake these spiritual journeys in the Lenten and Ramadan periods, let us remember to love and share the values that unite us. Let us reaffirm our commitment to the values of mercy, tolerance, forgiveness, and being our brother’s keepers among others and by these, advance a more inclusive and equitable society for us all. ”

Afunanya also urged the citizens from engaging in indiscriminate inflating prices of goods and commodities, adding that it could undermine the security of the country.

He said, ” It appeals to stakeholders to refrain from economic exploitation, sabotage, or profiteering during these important obligations. This is more so that illegal practices such as price gouging or unethical marketing tactics are ungodly; violate fairness and can undermine the true essence of the holy events. As believers, it is incumbent upon us to uphold good standards and ensure that everyone can observe the religious duties with ease and dignity. ”

Afunanya also appeals to the two religious leaders to ensure conflicts are prevented during Lent and Ramadan.

He said, “Furthermore, the Service encourages clerics and religious leaders to uphold empathy as well as prioritise cooperation and conflict prevention beyond the periods under reference. Similarly, the media is encouraged to utilise their platforms to foster informed and accurate engagements that (can) enhance the achievement of national security objectives and interests. ”

Afunanya, however, called for peace and unity among Christians and Muslims in the country.

He said, “DSS wishes to identify with the Christian and Muslim faithful at their Lent and coming Ramadan seasons respectively. Accordingly, the Management extends its heartfelt felicitations for peace, unity and harmony to adherents of these faiths.

“The DSS recognises the significance of these sacred rites and enjoins worshippers to promote understanding, compassion and respect for one another during and after the exercises.”

Tinubu condemns Borno, Kaduna abductions, orders quick rescue of victims

President Bola Tinubu has condemned the abduction of some internally displaced persons in Borno State and students in Kaduna State.

Tinubu has directed security and intelligence agencies to immediately rescue the victims and ensure that justice is served against the perpetrators.

This was contained in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, and shared on his Facebook page on Friday.

In the statement, Tinubu was quoted as saying, “I have received briefing from security chiefs on the two incidents, and I am confident that the victims will be rescued.

“Nothing else is acceptable to me and the waiting family members of these abducted citizens. Justice will be decisively administered.”

Tinubu sympathises with the families of the victims, assuring them that they will soon be reunited with their loved ones.

Ladies residing with HIV/AIDS lament discrimination

The Association of Women Living with HIV/AIDS and APIN Health Initiatives, have lamented the alleged discrimination against women living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus/ Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome by Nigerians.

The ASHWAN stressed that discrimination against victims of HIV/AIDS was a serious issue which should be addressed by the stakeholders.

The group, however, strssed the need to further promote gender equality for the development of the country.

The group’s Coordinator, Mrs Catherine Agboola, made the call while speaking at the commemoration of the 2024 International Women’s Day, held in Akure, Ondo State capital, on Friday.

The IWD is celebrated on March 8 annually.

The official theme of the day for the United Nations is ‘Invest in women: Accelerate progress.’

Agboola said, “The objective of this day is to advocate for increased investment and accelerate progress for women and girls in all their diversity through a society free from stigmatisation and discrimination against people living with HIV and AIDS.

“It is a very serious issue, and it is one that we all need to work together to address. ”

Calling for more sensitisation on gender equality in society, the ASHWAN Coordinator explained that gender equality is not only a fundamental human right but a necessary foundation for a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world.

The Ondo State Head of APIN Health Initiatives, Dr Folake Adurogbola, said the United Nations designated the year 2024’s theme as ‘Invest in women: accelerate progress’ with a focus on addressing economic disempowerment, while the campaign theme for this year is ‘Inspire Inclusion.’

While expressing concern over the prevailing harsh economy, Adurogbola declared that women must engage themselves in positive ventures such as business, skills acquisition and meaningful ideas that will propel them to higher ground.

She said, “Our women can’t afford to be lazy at this time because we know the economic situation in Nigeria is biting hard, so, this is not the time for women to sit down and expect the man to take responsibility 100%. They should also do something. Even, if it involves selling pure water, hawking it. They must be seen to contribute to the family and it will ease the burden on the home and the man that is the sole provider for the home.

“You can’t afford to be a housewife at this time, even if your husband says he doesn’t want you to work, try to do something while at home. There are lots of stay-at-home jobs now on the internet. Take advantage of technology, and social media to sell your products and support our homes. This is not a time for excuses.

“Gender equality enables and accelerates women’s equality and empowerment and can define how women’s involvement, participation, leadership and collective actions can make a difference for the women, their children and the entire universe as women are generally multipliers.

“In addition, this action calls for drive progress towards gender equality, equity and empowerment through the power of collective action by the women, for the women and with the women, all across the globe”.

Lawyer urges EFCC to probe Buhari’s cupboard members

Human rights lawyer, Pelumi Olajengbesi, has urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to probe all cabinet members and appointees who served during the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Buhari, the immediate past president, served a two-term of eight years from 2015 to 2023.

In a statement on Friday, Olajengbesi, who is the Managing Partner of Abuja-based law firm, Law Corridor, said the probe had become imperative with the startling revelations arising from the trial of ex-Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele.

According to him, there is a need for the EFCC to audit the financial transactions of all officials of government who served under former President Muhammadu Buhari.

He also commended the EFCC for exposing the alleged forgery of Buhari’s signature and that of ex-Secretary General of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, by the embattled former apex bank boss, who is enmeshed in a $6.2m fraud for foreign observers in the last poll.

Olajengbesi said, “The audacity of those in power and their criminal influence is becoming too much and must be stopped.

“The EFCC must not stop at just the former CBN Governor Godwin, Emefiele, but should carry out an entire audit of principal actors who served under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari. There should be a deterrent for bad behavior.

“Again, the case of the suspended Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Rural Electrification Agency, Ahmad Salihijo over alleged N1.2bn fraud is fresh, and a pointer to the gross abuse of power by those who served under Buhari.

“Emefiele and all those who served under the Buhari adminis8⅞ÿÿtration should be properly audited and given a chance to clear their names as the corruption that manifested under that government is gargantuan.”

Already, three witnesses have testified against Emefiele with the latest being an EFCC official and a forensic document examiner, Bamaiyi Haruna, who told the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Maitama on Thursday that his analysis of some documents used to release $6.2m from the CBN in February 2023 showed that the documents were forged.

The other witness was ex-SGF Mustapha, who also told the court that neither he nor ex-President Buhari were aware of the $6.2m, adding that Buhari’s signature was forged to move the money out. The third witness was a deputy director at the apex bank,  Onyeka Ogbu.

The EFCC, on June 18, 2023, arraigned Emefiele on amended 20 counts, in which he was accused of impersonating Mustapha to illegally move $6.2m from the CBN vault.

In the charges, the EFCC alleged that on February 8, 2023, Emefiele connived with one Odoh Ocheme, who is now on the run, to obtain $6.2m from the CBN, claiming that it was requested by the SGF “vide a letter dated 26th January 2023 with Ref No. SGF.43/L.01/”.

The Ogun State Commissioner for Finance, Dapo Okubadejo,  has assured residents of the state of transparent distribution of the N5 billion palliative intervention of the state government.

Okubadejo, who is also the Chief Economic Adviser to Governor Dapo Abiodun, made this pledge while appearing at a guest forum organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Ogun State Council, on Friday

He disclosed that he has heard of complaints regarding the disbursement of the government’s gesture, stressing that “all ‘I’s will be dotted and ‘t’s crossed.”

It was gathered that some quarters, especially students have frowned at the process of the disbursement of N50, 000 palliative to indigent students across the country.

The students are alleging attempts by some government officials to defraud and prevent the students from getting what is due to them.

Okubadejo said,” On the N5 billion palliative, I think the government has set up a committee and we will involve all relevant stakeholders and if you are concerned about any part of the distribution process at all, I know the government is ready to listen and make amends. The money is really not much but just see it as the first of such many initiatives to come.

“The register that will be used by the ministry of education is currently being compiled and a lot of validation is being done in the register. Some of the students have raised concerns but be rest assured that this will be done transparently. The reason the current list is being used was to start the programme immediately.

“ In fact, we are also leveraging technology for proper identification and that is why we are using BVN and NIN in this scheme. Be rest assured that this process will be done transparently.”

Speaking on the achievement of the government in the last five years, Okubadejo stated that the establishment of six additional economic development clusters positioned the state as an industrial capital

He added that the government had initiated the Economic Development Clusters, and partnered with the private sector to develop essential infrastructure, reduce costs, and provide companies with comprehensive support in providing power, water, and security.

Highlighting the state’s significant digital transformation that simplifies transactions for residents and businesses he said, “The key initiatives include the digitalization of business premises permits and Certificate of Occupancy (C of O), as well as holistic reforms in land processes to promote transparency and streamline transactions, thereby attracting investments into the state.

“Ogun state has witnessed remarkable financial growth with our Internally Generated Revenue, soaring from 50 billion in 2020 to over 130 billion in 2023.”

Earlier, the state NUJ Chairman, Comrade Wale Olarenwaju, said the purpose of the Forum was to provide a platform for interaction between the government and the governed.

He noted that Governor Abiodun-led administration had recorded many achievements that placed the state ahead of others, making the ISEYA mantra an envy of others.

The United Nations Children Fund has condemned the abduction of students by bandits in Kaduna State.

It said the alarming frequency of such incidents across the country signalled a crisis that requires immediate and determined action from all.

UNICEF said it is coordinating with local officials and providing assistance to the affected parents and families through psychological support services.

Over 280 pupils and teachers of Government Secondary School and LEA primary school at Kuriga, Kaduna State were abducted by bandits.

The bandits reportedly invaded the Kuriga area of the Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State on Thursday, shooting at their victims before taking away at least 280 of the pupils and teachers from both schools.

UNICEF Representative in Nigeria, Cristian Munduate, in a statement said, the alarming frequency of such incidents across the country signals a crisis that requires immediate and determined action from all levels of government and society.

Munduate said, “I am deeply saddened and concerned by the reports of yet another abduction of students in Kaduna State. Schools are supposed to be sanctuaries of learning and growth, not sites of fear and violence.

Just a day prior to this incident, the UN Resident Coordinator spoke about the abductions of large numbers of women, girls, and boys by members of a non-state armed group in Borno state.

It is imperative that the safety and security of students and educators are guaranteed, allowing schools to fulfill their role as safe havens for learning and development.”

She stated that the right to education is fundamental and must be protected against any form of violence or intimidation.

Former UK Prime Minister, Theresa May, on Friday announced that she will stand down as a member of parliament at the next general election, due to take place later this year.

May has represented the constituency of Maidenhead in southeast England since 1997 and served as prime minister between 2016 and 2019 – a tumultuous period in the UK as it attempted to negotiate its departure from the European Union.

“It has been an honour and a privilege to serve everyone in the Maidenhead constituency as a member of parliament for the last 27 years,” she said in a statement to the local Maidenhead Advertiser newspaper.

“Since stepping down as prime minister I have enjoyed being a backbencher again and having more time to work for my constituents and champion causes close to my heart including most recently launching a Global Commission on Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking.

“These causes have been taking an increasing amount of my time.

“Because of this, after much careful thought and consideration, I have realised that looking ahead, I would no longer be able to do my job as an MP in the way I believe is right and my constituents deserve,” she added.

What is scalping?

Scalping is a modern style of trading which involves extracting profit from small price movements within numerous transactions. A distinctive feature is the high intensity of transactions. Timeframes up to M15 are used; most often, M1–M5.

Here, the rules of classic scalping were invented, which involve trading on all micro-movements that exceed double spread and commission costs, exiting a position at the slightest trend reversal, and the habit of closing all positions overnight to lock in profits at the end of the day. Closing positions overnight ensures protection from the morning gap and allows sleeping well at night without considering the results of night trading.

Speed is another essential factor for scalpers, no less critical than liquidity, so the choice of broker is crucial. A scalper constantly analyses price charts and makes decisions based on this data, so the broker must provide quick access to the information necessary for analysis: prices, news, charts of foreign indices, signals, statistics, etc. As a consequence, fast scalping trades require an intermediary with an unloaded server so that, at the right moment, your request does not wait for a few crucial seconds for its turn.

What is Day Trading?

Day trading is speculative trading on the stock exchange during the trading day without carrying over open positions to the next day. Traders use only intraday operations, where the trade duration usually ranges from a couple of minutes to several hours. Trades are also rarely carried over to the next day.

How to choose?

Two key parameters to consider when choosing—your temperament and the availability of free time—affect the ability to follow the market.

Choleric/sanguine people make excellent scalpers, as scalping methods imply a good reaction to the appearance of a signal and quick fixation of profits. People with this temperament are not characterised by patience and diligence, so an abundance of quick trades is needed.

More calm people scalping will seem too aggressive. The need to react quickly to changing market conditions will cause discomfort. Intraday trading is more suitable for phlegmatic/melancholic people. There are far fewer deals; there is time to decide, and positions are kept open longer. From a trading psychology perspective, it is also important that the profit in each trade is more significant. A trader working in intraday style does not wake up at 5 a.m. thinking he has missed all the entry points. On the contrary, the schedule is built so that they have time to sleep, not to be in a hurry, and to balance trading and their personal lives.
