Frequency of abductions in Nigerian colleges alarming -UN

The United Nations Children Fund has condemned the abduction of students by bandits in Kaduna State.

It said the alarming frequency of such incidents across the country signalled a crisis that requires immediate and determined action from all.

UNICEF said it is coordinating with local officials and providing assistance to the affected parents and families through psychological support services.

Over 280 pupils and teachers of Government Secondary School and LEA primary school at Kuriga, Kaduna State were abducted by bandits.

The bandits reportedly invaded the Kuriga area of the Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State on Thursday, shooting at their victims before taking away at least 280 of the pupils and teachers from both schools.

UNICEF Representative in Nigeria, Cristian Munduate, in a statement said, the alarming frequency of such incidents across the country signals a crisis that requires immediate and determined action from all levels of government and society.

Munduate said, “I am deeply saddened and concerned by the reports of yet another abduction of students in Kaduna State. The alarming frequency of such incidents across the country signals a crisis that requires immediate and determined action from all levels of government and society. Schools are supposed to be sanctuaries of learning and growth, not sites of fear and violence.

“This latest abduction, as any previously, is highly condemnable and part of a worrying trend of attacks on educational institutions in Nigeria, particularly in the northwest, where armed groups have intensified their campaign of violence and kidnappings. Just a day prior to this incident, the UN Resident Coordinator spoke about the abductions of large numbers of women, girls, and boys by members of a non-state armed group in Borno state.

“UNICEF urges immediate action to ensure the safe return of the abducted children and staff and calls on authorities to implement comprehensive measures to secure schools across Nigeria. It is imperative that the safety and security of students and educators are guaranteed, allowing schools to fulfill their role as safe havens for learning and development.”

She stated that the right to education is fundamental and must be protected against any form of violence or intimidation.

“Our hearts go out to the families of the abducted students and staff, and we stand with them in this harrowing time. The right to education is fundamental and must be protected against any form of violence or intimidation. The children of Nigeria deserve to learn in peace.

“UNICEF is coordinating with local officials and providing assistance to the affected parents and families through psychological support services. Former UK Prime Minister, Theresa May, on Friday announced that she will stand down as a member of parliament at the next general election, due to take place later this year.

“It has been an honour and a privilege to serve everyone in the Maidenhead constituency as a member of parliament for the last 27 years,” she said in a statement to the local Maidenhead Advertiser newspaper.

“Since stepping down as prime minister I have enjoyed being a backbencher again and having more time to work for my constituents and champion causes close to my heart including most recently launching a Global Commission on Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking.

“These causes have been taking an increasing amount of my time.

“Because of this, after much careful thought and consideration, I have realised that looking ahead, I would no longer be able to do my job as an MP in the way I believe is right and my constituents deserve,” she added.

What is Day Trading?

Day trading is speculative trading on the stock exchange during the trading day without carrying over open positions to the next day. There are far fewer deals; there is time to decide, and positions are kept open longer. From a trading psychology perspective, it is also important that the profit in each trade is more significant. A trader working in intraday style does not wake up at 5 a.m. thinking he has missed all the entry points. On the contrary, the schedule is built so that they have time to sleep, not to be in a hurry, and to balance trading and their personal lives.

AHF also said it will distribute free sanitary pads to women in its engagement programmes.

The engagements with the women at these locations will empower women to take charge of their health while overcoming barriers to help them thrive.

A statement by the Advocacy and Marketing Manager of AHF, Steve Aborishade, on Friday noted that there is a need to recognise the incredible strides women have made towards equal rights, including access to healthcare, while remembering that the world still has a long way to go before women are empowered, safe, and healthy worldwide.

“To commemorate IWD, join AHF Nigeria as we hold engaging and purposeful IWD conversations with the women on our programme across 154 facilities in the seven states of operation in Abuja – FCT, Anambra, Akwa Ibom, Benue, Cross River, Kogi and Nasarawa states.

Akintoye Benson, an aide to the chairman of the Lagos Chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Musiliu Akinsanya, aka MC Oluomo, has reportedly died.

Benson, who was seen in a wrecked vehicle in a viral video, was said to have died in an auto crash on Third Mainland Bridge on Thursday night.

Confirming his death, a friend of the deceased, Ogunseye Vincent, wrote on his Facebook page that the late Benson was a vibrant man with high hopes and vision.

“The news of your passing came to me as a rude shock. You were a vibrant man with high hopes and vision.

“Though the memory we shared remains forever, I take solace in the trust that Olodumare will grant your soul a peaceful rest. Sail well to eternity, Comrade Akintoye Benson (Baba Ogun),” he added.

Until his death, Benson was the chairman of the Tricycle Owners and Operators Association of Nigeria (TOOAN) Zone H.

Efforts to reach Akinsanya for a comment proved abortive as his phone could not be reached as of the time of filing this report.

US soldier arrested for revealing defence secrets and techniques to China

A US Army intelligence analyst, Sergeant Korbein Schult, was arrested on Thursday for allegedly providing national defence information to China.

Schultz, who held a top-secret security clearance, was taken into custody at Fort Campbell, a military base on the Kentucky-Tennessee border.

The Justice Department disclosed this in a statement on Thursday.

Schultz’s indictment did not identify the country he was allegedly supplying with sensitive military information, but press reports identified it as China.

According to the indictment, Schultz, since June 2022, provided a contact in Hong Kong with documents, maps and photographs relating to US national defense.

Schultz was allegedly paid a total of $42,000 for the information.

The Justice Department said it included information about potential US plans in the event that Taiwan came under military attack.

It also included documents related to fighter aircraft and helicopters, hypersonic equipment, the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) and studies about the US and Chinese military.

Asked on Friday about Schultz’s arrest, as well as that of a Chinese software engineer held this week for allegedly stealing artificial intelligence technology from Google, Beijing said it was “not aware of the specific circumstances” of the cases.

But spokesperson Mao Ning said in reference to the Google case that “China has consistently attached high importance to and actively protected intellectual property rights”.

“At the same time, we also oppose the United States abusing its national power to groundlessly suppress Chinese enterprises and Chinese citizens,” she told a regular briefing.
