Lagos police arrest lady for poisoning one-year-old daughter

A woman simply identified as Rukayat is now in police custody for allegedly poisoning her one-year-old daughter with an insecticide in the Oworonshoki area of Lagos State.

According Online gathered that the incident occurred around 11am. on Friday.

A police source told our correspondent that the infant had epilepsy and that the mother poisoned her because she was fed up with the circumstances.

“One Rukayat brought her one-year-old, seven-month-old daughter to LUTH for treatment. Later that same day, she confessed to having poisoned her child with an insecticide because she could not continue with her daughter having epilepsy. She said she wanted to rest from the stress”, the source said.

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident to our correspondent.

He noted that the mother has been arrested and an investigation is ongoing.

He said, “Detectives of the division were immediately dispatched to the hospital, and they met the baby receiving treatment, and the mother has been taken into custody after treatment, and the investigation is ongoing.”

Last year, According reported that the Lagos State Police Command had confirmed the death of a 39-year-old woman, Lilian Nwarache, who drank an insecticide in the Iwaya area of Lagos State. She was said to have been frustrated with having an illness.

Anthony Joshua has won his fourth straight fight by securing a second-round knockout win over Cameroonian boxer, Francis Ngannou, in the main event of the “Knockout Chaos” card in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Tinubu daughter urges girls participation in nation constructing

The daughter of President Bola Tinubu and Iyaloja-General, Mrs Folasade Tinubu-Ojo, has reiterated the importance of women’s contribution to the nation’s development.

Tinubu-Ojo, who spoke at this year’s International Women’s Day celebration in Akure the Ondo State capital, on Friday, said it was high time more women joined hands with men to work for the development of the country. The 2024 International Women’s Day theme is ‘Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress” #Inspire Inclusion.’

According to her, a peaceful and healthy family contributes to harmonious bonds and support in society.

She said, “Women should not relent in contributing their quota to the development of the nation. We must be involved in the stages of building our immediate environment and the nation at large”.

The state governor, Mr Lucky Aiyedatiwa, represented by his deputy, Mr Olayide Adelami, said his administration would put in place policies that would give room for the development of women in the state, calling on women to support him as he would be contesting for the forthcoming governorship election in the state.

The governor said, “It is high time we gave room for our women to exhibit their full potential for the attainment of their economic breakthrough, access to needed health services and empowerment in order to inspire the inclusion which is the motive of this year’s theme.

“I want to assure you that this administration will continue to support women in all possible ways to attain their full potentials in all spheres of life.

In her remarks, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Gender Matters, Mrs. Olamide Falana, urged opinion leaders and government at all levels to seek ways to empower women around them, noting that women had a better tendency to thrive if empowered accordingly.

She said, “The era whereby women were being faced with series of militating factors centred around gender-based violence, sexual harassment, workplace discrimination, and disenfranchisement was phasing out. Beyond the home front, women are found in every sphere of life, characterised as moulders, counsellors, managers, networkers, communicators, enthusiasts, and in politics, they are great mobilizers and campaigners.”

Falana stressed that though women live within a patriarchal system, it was important to systematically invest in women so they could be free and add value to society just as the hashtag #Inspire Inclusion# implies.

According to her, women could begin to look beyond financial inducement at the detriment of women who are credible, vibrant and passionate to take up leadership roles.

“It is a call for women to be at the forefront and become extraordinary, only then can we be recognised and recommended for various positions of leadership; We want to see women rise to enviable positions; Let our young girls no longer be pushed aside into early marriage, forced labour or sexual slavery; These young girls of today are our future change ambassadors that would add value to the society” she charged.

Buhari by no means noticed Oronsaye’s report, says ex-minister

Former Minister of Communication, Adebayo Shittu, says that Steven Oronsaye’s report was not presented to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari during his administration.

Shittu was a minister during Buhari’s first term in office between 2015 and 2019.

According to him, the report was not brought to the attention of the Buhari administration, and as such, there was no need for implementation.

He said, “The report had been with the previous government (Jonathan’s) but they didn’t do anything. Nobody brought it to our (Buhari government’s) attention, at least not when I was there. So, the issue never came up for discussion at the Federal Executive Council meeting at all. If nobody brought it and there were no complaints, we didn’t have cause to look at it at all.”

There was controversy over the report since the Federal Government approved the implementation of some of its recommendations to reduce the cost of governance on February 26, about 12 years after it was submitted.

Twenty-nine government agencies are expected to be merged, even as eight parastatals will be subsumed into eight other agencies, even as some Nigerians fear that this may lead to job losses.

The National President, Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, Tommy Etim, had warned that job losses amidst the current hardship in the country could lead to mass protests.

Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, described the report as outdated, advising the Federal Government to ensure that “the crisis of insecurity is not compounded through the retrenchment of hundreds of thousands of workers.”

Meanwhile, the Federal Government, on Thursday, inaugurated the implementation committee.

Speaking on the matter, Shittu said that civil servants should not be afraid of job losses, adding that only politicians would be affected as the number of appointees would reduce.

“We must avoid or do away with duplication of services because that would increase the cost of governance. When we talk about some people losing jobs, I think that national interest is more important than personal interest, and I don’t see any civil servant losing his job on that,” he stressed.

Also speaking on the matter, Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Yusuf Ali, said implementing the Oronsaye’s report would reduce the excessively complicated administration of ministries, departments, and agencies of government.

 Ali said, “One of the things you will find is that there is a lot of inter-agency rivalry. It happens almost everywhere, including in the US. If the report is implemented faithfully, at least we will be out of the problem of rivalry as well as overlapping functions and duties.

“It may not affect the personnel because it will become a larger body. And it will lead to having a leaner government that will be able to manage bureaucracy better. The fact that you are merging A and B does not mean you will dismiss people. It only means that you will have a larger number of people working in the same space.

“If you are talking about the loss of jobs, what will you say with the advent of artificial intelligence and robotics? Should we say people will lose their jobs and not invest in AI, robotics like drones, and others? Anything that will bring progress, we should try to adopt it.”

The Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, has called for the unity of Nigerians, saying that the continuous prosperity, growth and development of any society will be impossible if the people refuse to live in love and cooperate with their leaders.

He spoke on Friday at a programme held to celebrate the late Chief Tairu Olaleye, the grandfather of the immediate past High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Amb Safadeen Ishola, as the Hero of the Year for the annual Lisabi Festival.

According to Gbadebo, the annual Lisabi Festival is not only about celebrating the rich cultural heritage of the Egba people but also a significant platform that helps unite the people and promotes selflessness and profound leadership qualities.

He noted that the contributions of the Hero of the Year 2024 Lisabi Festival, Chief Tairu Olaleye, to the development of Egbaland, could not be erased saying that the late Egba chief served the people diligently and deserved the posthumous award.

Alake added that the event served as a platform to celebrate achievements honour exemplary individuals and foster unity among Egba sons and daughters.

“We use Lisabi festival to promote selflessness, to promote leadership qualities in all Egba sons and daughters, to promote what we are known for. Education is our number one industry; to promote education and entrepreneurship.

“This year, we chose agric business, and we have had a series of lectures, bankers coming to tell us about what facilities are available to farmers and we have gotten so many Egba sons who have produced the equipment that so many of our children will need when they’re going into farming.

“We can truly achieve a lot in unity and cooperation. This is why I am calling on all of us irrespective of our tribes to be more interested in fostering unity and peace, not only in Egba land but across the country because the progress, prosperity, growth and development of any society lies in these ingredients of unity and peace”, the monarch said.

Tunji-Isola, the immediate past Nigerian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, reflected on his family’s pride in their heritage, with his grandfather being honoured.

He said, “Unity will achieve a lot in terms of having a common agenda for development. The essence thus, is to galvanise ourselves together and uplift Egbaland in terms of socio-economic issues, employment and other infrastructure because one thing that always brings development for any set of people is their unity of purpose and I am happy that we are getting that in Egbaland.”

The high point of the event was the presentation of a certificate in recognition of the late Chief Tairu Olaleye as the Lisabi Festival Hero of the Year, 2024.

Other royal fathers at the event were Oba Adedapo Tejuoso, the Osile of Oke-Ona Egba as well as Oba Saka Matemilola, the Olowu of Egba-Owu, among other dignitaries.

Lisabi Festival is an annual event held in March in commemoration of the legendary Lisabi Agbongbo Akala for his heroic exploits in securing freedom for the Egbas from the Oloyo.

The festival is to showcase and foster the virtues and values held by Lisabi to further develop the Egbaland and Ogun State.

The festival brings people from the entire Egbaland together in a spectacular display of pomp and pageantry.

All is now set for the burial of the late former Chief Executive Officer of Access Holdings, Dr Herbert Wigwe in his hometown, Omueke in Isiokpo, Ikwere Local Government Area of Rivers State on Saturday (today).

His remains, which were accompanied by a huge motorcade on Friday, had left the Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa in Ikwerre LGA at about 1:33pm straight to his father’s compound in Omueke, Isiokpo.

Recall that Wigwe’s kinsmen had insisted that their son must be buried in his hometown. Omueke, even as they vowed to deploy ancient tradition in finding out the cause of his death.

Many community members already adorn black attire to welcome Wigwe’s body, while Isiokpo married women gathered at the circle of the entrance into the community to offer prayers for God to avert the spirit of untimely death and the demise of prominent members of the area.

The women numbering over 200, sprinkled water on the floor, while some sat on the grass and sobbed uncontrollably in prayers, prayed in their dialect as they welcome the body.

One of them said, “We have just completed a three-day fasting which ended today. We have been fasting from 6am to 9am which ends today.

“We are not happy at all. Our son, Herbert, was taking care of us, widows and children in this area. Every Christmas, he brings bags of rice and other foodstuff to every family here.

“We are praying God to remove the spirit of untimely death and stop our prominent people from dying. We are pained.”

The Chairman of Ikwerre Local Government Area, Dr Samuel Nwanosike, and elders of the community received his body when it arrived in Isiokpo on Friday morning.

Speaking to newsmen, Nwanosike described Wigwe’s death as a great loss, saying, “He had a large vision not only for his people but the entire Ikwerre ethnic nationality.”

He said the people would find a way to immortalise him.

Meanwhile, about 30 private jets conveying dignitaries ranging from governors, ministers, prominent politicians, captains of industries, top traditional rulers, are expected to grace the occasion to pay their last respect to the financial mogul and philanthropist.

The Port Harcourt International Airport is already experiencing heavy traffic as some visitors and community folks have started arriving.

As of the time of filing this report on Friday evening, preparations are in top gear for a wake to be held at Wigwe University, which he founded.

The university which has reached an advanced stage of completion shares the same fence with late Wigwe’s palatial residence in the serene community.

Meanwhile, the Rivers State Police Command has taken significant steps to reinforce security arrangements to ensure a peaceful and well-organised burial ceremony for the late Herbert Wigwe, his wife, and son.

This was contained in a statement issued in Port Harcourt by the spokesperson for the State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko and sent to newsmen on Friday.

Iringe-Koko said operatives, including Mobile policemen, would be deployed from various units, including tactical command and undercover personnel, due to the expected large gathering of mourners.

Former two-time world heavyweight champion, Joshua, battled the Cameroonian, who knocked down Fury last October.

The card had it all, a sublime KO, a title win and a hard-fought draw.

Joshua knocked Ngannou down three times in the bout with the first coming with 40 seconds left in round one as the British-Nigerian landed a solid right punch on the Cameroonian’s chin and he went down.

Ngannou let the referee count to eight before stepping back up.

The same thing happened on the second knockdown in round two as he gets up on eight seconds.

However, the third knockdown sends him straight down and he can no longer get up needing oxygen and a doctor long after the bell signaling the end of the fight and Joshua’s win was rung.

Parker beats Zhang by majority decision

This was an incredible result for Joseph Parker as he was knocked down on two occasions in the fight but still got the win.

Parker takes the WBO interim heavyweight title and was joined in the ring by his entourage, including WBC heavyweight champion, Tyson Fury.

As part of efforts to cushion the effects of economic pains on the people, the Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, launched the operation “Feed the Hungry Initiative” in the state on Friday with N1 billion.

Obaseki said the present hunger and economic woes ravaging Nigeria are self-inflicted, adding that when he first raised the alarm of imminent economic danger, some people thought he was merely playing opposition politics.

The governor, while launching the initiative at St. Paul’s Pastoral Centre, Benin City, and the Government House, when he met with the leadership of Christian Association of Nigeria, and the League of Muslim Imams, respectively, disclosed that the first phase of the programme will capture over 60,000 residents of the state through the five blocks that make up the CAN and the Muslim communities.

He said, “I know that when people are distressed, many might not be able to come to the Government House; they go to the various parishes to meet you to see that you assist them. I am sure that in the last few years of extreme economic hardship, the burden of the church has increased, that is why we want to use the religious bodies for this initiative.

“When we first raised the alarm a few years ago, some people thought we were joking, but it didn’t stop us from getting to where we are. We cannot sit down to lament and complain over the situation we have found ourselves.

“I must say that this initiative will be purely driven by CAN as a body. Our responsibility as a government is to make the funds available and monitor the process to ensure that our goals are met. For the pilot phase, we are making available N1 billion. We will place it in a dedicated account, from where this programme will be carried out by the men and women of God.

“We are going to use this structure you are putting in place to try to reach as many as possible and let them know the economic opportunities that this government is making available, particularly in the areas of agriculture. When we get this agricultural programme going in the next few weeks, we will reach out to you to make the people know the inputs that we can give them, assurance that we will buy all their produce, particularly the ones with protein.”

Earlier, speaking, the Archbishop of Benin Catholic Church, Dr Augustine Akubeze, thanked the governor for nursing the plan of assisting the poor and hungry to cushion the effects of the biting economic situation suffered by Nigerians, citing the Edo people.

The Chairman of CAN in Edo State, Irekpono Omoike, lauded Obaseki, adding that Christian blocs in the state will justify the confidence reposed in them by making sure that the targeted persons are those to benefit.

Also, the Chief Imam of Benin Central Mosque, Abdulfatai Enabulele, led other Imams to the meeting in the governor’s office, commended the governor for the initiative, and pledged the clerics’ support to make the programme work.

1,500 sacked OAUTH staff protest

The disengaged staff of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife, on Friday, protested at the hospital premises following the failure of the management to reverse the decision to lay them off.

More than 1,500 workers of the hospital were laid off by the Federal Government following alleged irregularities in their recruitment process.

They were protesting against a circular by the management of the hospital to conduct examination for certain cadre that would be considered for employment.

The protesters, who were calling for the suspension of the examination, blocked the main gates of the hospital, preventing human and vehicular movement in and out of the complex.

One of the disengaged staff, Samson Falope, told the News Agency of Nigeria that the circular stated that the examination would be conducted on March 9, at the Command Day Secondary School, Army Barrack, Ede, Osun.

“What we discovered was that, the circular for the conduct of recruitment exercise under the June 2022 recruitment waiver has been released, which led to the protest.

“The ministry in charge had been notified, the House of Representatives and the National Assembly were aware too. All we are waiting for is their intervention and resolution.

“We are hopeful that the examination would be suspended indefinitely,” he said.

The Public Relations Officer of OAUTHC, Miss Kemi Fasoto, told NAN that the examination would be conducted by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare as scheduled.
