Take away import duties on meals gadgets, activist urges Tinubu

0

The Convener of Concerned Nigerians, Deji Adeyanju, has urged President Bola Tinubu to temporarily remove import duties on imported food items to cushion the hardship in the country.

The According reports that importers had in October 2023 urged the authorities and stakeholders to review the current import duty structure in the country as foreign exchange has led to its escalating costs.

The former acting President of the Association of Nigerian Licensed Agents, Dr Kayode Farinto, who made the appeal, said the recent surge in import duty due to the volatile exchange rate would burden the average Nigerian consumer.

Farinto said, “The current exchange rate fluctuations have caused import duties to rise to unprecedented levels, making it increasingly difficult for importers to maintain competitive pricing while staying afloat in the market.

“We call upon the relevant authorities and stakeholders to urgently review the current import duty structure and devise comprehensive measures to address these challenges.

“It is crucial to strike a balance between generating revenue for the government and maintaining a favorable environment for importers to contribute positively to the Nigerian economy.”

But while commending the President for directing the Customs Service to return seized food items to their rightful owners, he urged Tinubu to temporarily remove import duties on imported food items

In a statement on Monday, Adeyanju said, “The directive to the Customs Service to return seized food items to their rightful owners demonstrates President Tinubu’s commitment to tackling hunger and food insecurity in the country.

“President Tinubu’s directive to the Customs Service reflects his responsiveness to the concerns and criticisms raised by the public. The prevailing insecurity caused by banditry and other criminal activities has significantly impacted the agricultural sector.

“Many farmers are unable to go to their farms due to the fear of attacks, resulting in reduced agricultural productivity and food scarcity. I urge the President to temporarily remove import duties on all imported food items. This measure will help alleviate the current challenges faced by Nigerians.”

The According reports that the country is battling severe hunger, as the prices of staples have increased by over 300 per cent.

The country is also witnessing the highest inflation in 28 years, with the food inflation rate in January hitting 35.41 per cent.

Nigeria’s annual inflation rate rose to 29.90 per cent in the same month from 28.92 per cent in December 2023, according to official figures from the National Bureau of Statistics.

For instance, a bag of long grain rice now sells for almost N80,000 as against N45,000, which it sold for in December 2023. A crate of eggs now sells for almost N5,000; in December, it sold for N2,700.

Several other food items have also seen an astronomical increase in prices owing to several market forces, chief of which is the free fall of the naira.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Monday, tendered additional evidence against MICAD Project City Services Limited, and James Nolan, a Director of Process and Industrial Development Limited, before Justice Nora Egwuatu of the Federal High Court, sitting in Abuja.

This was made known in a statement by the Head, Media and Publicity of the EFCC, Dele Oyewale.

MICAD Project City Services Limited and James Nolan, are standing trial on a 20-count charge of obtaining by false pretense, non-compliance with the Money Laundering Act 2011 (as amended) and criminal conversion of proceeds of crime, to the tune N151,394,328.00.

In February, the International Criminal Police Organisation, said it had arrested Nolan, in Italy after reportedly jumping bail in 2022, in the ongoing $9.6 billion P&ID scandal.l

At the last session on January 18, 2024, second prosecution counsel, PW2, Hussain Babangida informed the court how directors of Micad City Services Ltd absconded with about N39,450,224.23, owed as taxes to the Federal government using fake signatures.

At Monday’s court sitting, the prosecution counsel, Bala Sanga, informed the court that the EFCC had filed additional evidence before the court on February 20, 2024, and defence counsel, Micheal Ajara, confirmed that they have been served the evidence.

Sanga then presented the third prosecution witness, PW3, Nnedimma Irene Eyisi, a lawyer, who narrated to the court how James Nolan informed her that he needed to renew himself as the Director of MICAD.

“Sometimes in 2016, my principal informed me that a client will give me a form to file a CAC document. Later that day, I received a call from a client who introduced himself as James Nolan, and he informed me he needed to renew himself as the Director of the company. I asked him to give me details about the directors of the company and he did. I informed him I will prepare a CAC Form 7, so that the required directors will sign.

“A couple of weeks later, our Secretary informed me that I have some documents which contained CAC form 7 appointing James Nolan as the director, a consent letter accepting to be a director by James Nolan. On receiving these documents, I proceeded to CAC and after a couple of days, I checked back and the application was approved. I made the necessary payment and submitted. I came back days later to collect the CTC of these documents. I packaged it and gave it out for dispatch, I called the client and informed him that the documents are ready”, she added.

Eyisi also informed the court that she could recognize the document on sight, adding that it bears the name of James Nolan. She said she was invited by the EFCC in respect of the CAC form 7 and wrote a statement on August 31, 2021 which reflected her name.

According to the statement, the witness in her cross examination, said that she dispatched the form for the company and the directors to sign.

“CAC form 7 must return all signed and I submitted them all. All I know is that the documents were returned, signed by all directors and the new director.”

Sanga then applied to the court for the document to be admitted in evidence. The defense counsel did not object to the application.

Justice Egwuatu admitted the document in evidence and marked it as “Exhibit J”, and thereafter adjourned the matter to March 12, 2024 for continuation of hearing.

Victims of Ibadan explosion accuse govt of neglect

Some victims of the recent Bodija explosion in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Monday, alleged abandonment by the state government.

The According reports that five people were confirmed dead, 55 houses were damaged while 78 persons sustained various degrees of injuries at an explosion that rocked Adeyi Avenue, Old Bodija, Ibadan, in the Ibadan North Local Government Area of the state, on Tuesday, January 16, 2024.

Our correspondent, who visited the community, on Saturday, observed that some of the owners whose buildings passed the integrity test conducted by the state government have begun the renovation of their property.

Though operatives of the Nigerian Army, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and Amotekun security agency were still at the various entrances leading to the scene to maintain law and order, while owners and artisans were being allowed movement with vehicles bringing in materials needed for the repair of damaged buildings.

Some of the victims, who spoke with our correspondent, who visited the hotel, on Monday, lamented alleged abandonment by the government.

They said, “We were formerly accommodated on the bill of the government at one of highbrow hotels around Basorun Akobo, Ibadan, but we were later moved to another hotel along Jericho, also within the Ibadan metropolis.”

One of the affected residents, Ayo Ogunlola said, “We are victims of the Bodija explosion, with most of us having our houses sited within the corridor of the explosion and our houses and property were destroyed. The Governor, Seyi Makinde, in his character as a responsible leader, decided to house most of us who are homeless in various hotels. We are originally housed in Calton Gate Hotels, a gesture we sincerely appreciate. On February 16, the hotel management decided to forcefully evict us using various tactics.

“They stopped giving us food and went to the extent of harassing us with armed guards in our rooms. We were eventually relocated to Orchard Hotels with a standby instruction of one meal per room, irrespective of the number of occupants. Some of us decided to boycott the food because it was humiliating.

“Unfortunately, the hotel has started maltreating us, the so-called one meal has been stopped and light is gradually being withdrawn. We know we are guests of the State Government. We want to make it clear today that most of us are in the hotel today because the result of the integrity test for most of the houses has just been released, and renovation just commenced.

“Also, the restoration of electricity, which is entirely the job of the government and Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company is still on hold by implications of no electricity in our part of the Estate. Are they expecting us to move to the Estate without basic facilities? We want quick and urgent intervention, we cannot stand this humiliation again.”

Another victim, Ibrahim Adekunle, said, “It is so difficult here, but our main body, I mean the association of landlords is making moves towards seeing the governor and making a presentation on behalf of everybody. We expect the government to take action. They have written a letter to the governor and only waiting for a date when they will meet with us.”

Also speaking, Taiwo Adebiyi said, “We thought that after our relocation here after three days, they would come to pay us a visit, but nothing like that happened. The only government official that came who was the Director of Protocol was called when the management of the hotel was harassing us with threat to eject us.

“We were first lodged at Carlton Gate Hotels free of charge and the government was only paying for our food and drinks. Later the management of the hotel complained that the money paid for our food had been exhausted and they were borrowing money to feed us.

“When their general manager gave us this information we felt so bad that we couldn’t eat again. They gave us a place for free and only for you to be paying for food and drinks, and you refused to pay. He said that they have spent N1.8 million on each of us and I said that they accommodated free of charge here. The manager confronted one of the government officials that his boss gave out the hotel free to the government and the government is only expected to pay for food and entertainment, but not paying.” She bemoaned.

Another victim, who did not want her name in print said, “What else do you want from me again? One of us just spoke with you, and I stand by his position. He told you what we are going through. He just told you our predicaments, so, what else do you want again? I can only appeal to the government and the Governor, Makinde, to come to our rescue once more. This embarrassment is getting out of hand.”

A Spinal Cord victim, Oluwatimileyin Oseni, who was just discharged last Friday at the Redeemers Hospital, Ikolaba in the Ibadan North Local Government Area of the state, narrated his ordeal when our correspondent visited Orchard Hotel in Ibadan, on Monday.

Oseni, a 300 Level Mass Communication student of Adeleke University, Ede in Osun State, said, “I was working on the street around my area around 7:45pm to buy something from a local vendor.
So, as I was about to leave the street, I heard a very loud noise and suddenly found myself inside the BON Hotel gutter which is out of my street. So, when I found myself there, I was scared and things were changed. People were running helter-skelter, running for their lives. Everywhere was dark. But luckily for me, my phone was in my pocket. So, it was my phone I used to call my Daddy. I told him I didn’t know how I got there. He now said I should come to the Estate gate.

“Our house had already come down and I don’t know where they were at that time, but I was in the gutter struggling for safety. People were running and they didn’t even look at my side. They said he is dead. I couldn’t even see anybody because everywhere was dark. So, I was cruelling to manage myself to the gate. I couldn’t even breathe again because of the dust, so I was so tired.

“My dad and my friends came with a car to rush me to the hospital, that’s what I could remember. And I stayed at the Intensive Care Unit of Redeemers Hospital at Housing, Bodija for four days before I was moved to another Redeemers Hospital, located at Ikolaba. I was just been discharged last week Friday after I spent about seven weeks in the hospital bed. Though I feel okay and feel better I’m not still myself.” He explained.

When approached his mother, who has been staying with him in the hospital for comment, she simply said, “I’m not in the mood.”

She, therefore, declined further comment.

All efforts to get the reactions of the Head of the Emergency Medical Team, Temitope Alonge, were not successful as he never picked up his calls nor responded to the messages sent to his mobile number.

However, a statement by the state Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, on Monday, debunked the insinuation that the government had abandoned the welfare of victims of the Bodija explosion.

He said, “The government has debunked the insinuation that it has abandoned the welfare of victims of the Bodija explosion in Ibadan. The rumour is unfair and unnecessary. Ever since the January 16 explosion, the government has been spending between N15 and N20 million weekly on accommodation and feeding for the victims in the past eight weeks.

“As we speak, the government has spent over N160 million on accommodation and feeding alone for the victims who were immediately accommodated at the Hotels and 38 of them still residing in the various hotels. In the same vein, the government has picked up a medical bill of over N17 million while those still in hospitals are being actively catered for.”

Oyelade also said that two million naira is spent weekly, amounting to N16 million in eight weeks, for security operatives to protect the property left behind by the victims.

On the rumour that some of the victims were ejected from their hotels, the commissioner said nothing could be farther from the truth.

He said, “One of the hotels at Idi-Ape informed their occupants that they would like to fumigate their premises and the government took it upon itself to immediately arrange transportation for the explosion victims to be accommodated in another hotel at Jericho together with members of their families.

“The government does not think making an issue of fumigating a facility is the correct thing to do because such exercise is routine and the prerogative of the hotel owners.

“On the accusation that victims’ meals have been reduced to one, the government sees this as equally spurious because many hotels provide complimentary breakfast, and most of our wards go out in the daytime, hence, the government’s decision to provide dinner.”

FG plans 6000 megawatts to enhance energy provide – Minister

0

The Federal Government is set to increase electricity megawatts from 4000 to 6000 within the next three to six months to improve power supply.

The Minister of Power, Mr Adebayo Adelabu,  said this in Abuja on Monday, while meeting with the Heads of Power Agencies and other stakeholders in the industry.

He said, “4000 megawatts is not acceptable and we have plans to increase the megawatts to a minimum of 6000 to 6500 within the next three to six months.

”What we are looking at is to have an agreement to ramp up to a minimum of 6000 megawatts within the next three to six months.

”I know that the highest we ever generated was 5,700 megawatts about three years ago, that was specifically in Nov. 2021.

”And these 5700 megawatts were also distributed. If we could achieve 5,700 at that time, I believe we still have infrastructure to generate between 6,000 and 6,500,’ ‘he said.

Adelabu said that he had visited a number of generation companies and confirmed that they had the installed capacity to generate the 6000 megawatts.

According to him, a large percentage of the installed capacity is operational, but they are not available because of low or shortage in gas supply.

”Once there is gas supply, we want to ramp up generation to minimum 6,000 megawatts,’’ he said.

The minister said that he received information about a couple of improvements in the sector but that is not still acceptable until there is a quantum leap in terms of stable electricity supply.

“We need to do what we need to do to get the power sector to the desired level. Nigerians deserve the right to ask for good governance from people that are elected to power.

“They deserve the right to ask for improvement in service. People cannot be paying for darkness. What they should be paying for is light. And there should be consistent improvement in supply on a daily basis.

“So, I also want to use the opportunity to reassure Nigerians that what we are experiencing is temporary. We are addressing the root cause of all these issues.

The minister said that the ministry of power and the agencies under it are working day and night to ensure that the situation is reversed within a very short time.

He said the ministry and its agencies would not relent until stable power is achieved adding that the meeting was called to address the issues in the power sector.

Adelabu said that the administration of President Bola Tinubu is committed to addressing the root cause of the issues and address them so that there can be consistent electricity supply to consumers.

“This is the only way, we can guarantee good life for our people and increase industrialisation, employment, economic growth, and industrial development.

“It is true that the Electricity Distribution Companies are in the hands of private sectors. We do not have direct control but we need to compel them to perform.

“They must perform. If they do not perform, all our efforts in generation, transmission is zero. I had a meeting with the Chairman of Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) on how to address DisCos performance,’’ he said.

The Kwara State Police Command said that it has commenced an investigation into the abduction of a Chinese national identified as Williams Zang, who was allegedly kidnapped in a hotel on the outskirts of Ilorin, the state capital, on Sunday.

The foreigner, according to a credible source, was said to have been attacked by about six gunmen around 10pm on Sunday night at a guest house and taken into the bush.

The police command, while confirming the abduction, said the foreigner was taken to the bush on a motorcycle.

A statement by the state Police Public Relations Officer, Ejire-Adeyemi Toun, read, “On the night of March 10, 2024, at about 2200 hours, our attention was drawn to an unfortunate incident that occurred at Cherish Guest House, an isolated facility situated on the outskirts of Ilorin.

“The gunmen fired several shots into the air, causing panic among nearby residents. Our patrol team responded to the scene promptly and found the guest house securely locked.

“However, 30 minutes later, the manager of the guest house, Mr Idume David Joseph, 28 years old, reported at Eiyenkorin police station. He disclosed that six armed men had forcibly entered the guest house and abducted a Chinese national identified as Williams Zang.

“Williams, a former employee of Erkang Quarry, had been lodging at the guest house for over two months prior to the incident. The assailants utilised the manager’s vehicle, a black Toyota Venza with registration number Lagos FST 701 HG, to transport the victim.

“Subsequently, our tactical teams combed the entire area and its neighbourhoods, which led to the recovery of the aforementioned vehicle along Ilorin/Ogbomosho Road at about 0030 hours.

Fubara presents widow of slain policeman N20m

0

The Rivers State Government has commended the State Police Command for its efforts in fighting crime in the state.

The government said such efforts have produced tangible results like the neutralisation of a notorious cultist, David Okpara, popularly known as TuBaba, accused of killing the late Ahoada Divisional Police Officer, Bako Angbashim and causing harm to others.

The State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, stated this when he paid a condolence visit to the Rivers State Commissioner of Police,  Olatunji Disu at the Command Headquarters in Port Harcourt on Monday, over the murder of Inspector Monday Isah.

Isah was on stop-and-search duty at the Eliza axis of Port Harcourt, when some armed men ambushed and opened fire on him, though his colleagues engaged the assailants and neutralised one of them.

This was contained in a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Monday by Juliana Masi, Head of Press Unit, Office of the Secretary to the State Government.

The governor, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Tammy Danagogo, said he was at the command to extend his condolence directly to the widow and family of Inspector Isah and officers of the State Police Command.

He explained that the government and people of Rivers State, especially those who were directly affected by the actions of the gang were elated when Tubaba and his gang of criminals were eliminated.

He stated, “Rivers people are happy at your efforts to bring peace to the state. We are very grateful and commend your efforts.”

While presenting a cheque of N20 million to the widow of Inspector Issah, he clarified that the Rivers State Government takes it as a point of duty to relate with the officers who are making daily sacrifices to ensure peace in the State.

The governor admonished the widow to keep faith in God and be steadfast in the care of her children.

According to him, “The reason we are here is to share in your pain. I always say this token is nothing compared to life.

“What is key is to inform you that the Governor and people of Rivers State appreciate the effort of your husband and father and sincerely sympathize with you over the loss.

“I always say, when a man dies in the cause of serving God and man, God will never leave the people he left behind. Your husband did not die in luxury, but while serving the country to secure the safety of the state.

“Place your faith in God, for death is a necessary end for all humans irrespective of who we are or where we are.”

Continuing, he said, “If you place your faith in God and concentrate on this additional responsibility God has given you, which is to be both father and mother to your children, God will reward you. God is able to see you through this situation. ”

The Commissioner of Police,  Olatunji Disu thanked the Governor for his magnanimity to the State Police Command.

CP Disu noted that the governor has again raised the hope of the bereaved family and members of the state police command as he affirmed that the sample of this goodwill will reinvigorate the spirit of all officers.

He stated, “The Inspector was a gallant officer and all officers of his team showed gallantry. They fought back and neutralised one of the murderers.

“We will go after everybody who kills a policeman or anyone for that matter and bring them to justice,” even as he promised to sustain the peace being enjoyed in the state.
