Remi Tinubu commissions digital economy centre in Oyo

The Wife of the President, Oluremi Tinubu, on Tuesday, inaugurated a Digital Economy Centre and e-learning facilities donated by her to Ogbomoso Girls High School, Ogbomoso, in Oyo State.

Tinubu, who was represented by the wife of the state governor, Tamunominini Makinde, said Nigerians must recognise the role of technology in advancing gender equality by ensuring full participation of women in the digital revolution through access to technology.

She described the centre as a demonstration of the administration of President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to ensuring equitable access to education across the country.

Tinubu said, “The Renewed Hope Initiative, in collaboration with National Information Technology Development Agency under the National Digital Gender Inclusion Strategy, will be extending support to equip more centres in the remaining states of the Federation.

“NITDA will expand opportunities for digital literacy and empowerment by building and equipping three ICT centres in other parts of the country this year, as we speak, one of the centres is currently being commissioned in Bauchi State.

“Technology has become a positive tool in our world, shaping everything through communication, and commerce, to education and healthcare, therefore, in the derivation of the digital economy, our women must not be left behind. Continuous training, access, and exposure to technology can open new opportunities providing greater access to employment and striving for business.

“Presently, we are witnessing remarkable progress in our women and girls in digital space, and is truly inspiring, as you strive towards building a more inclusive and equitable society. I, therefore, urge all beneficiaries to take full ownership and maximize advantage by these centres.”

The president’s wife, who said the centre would inspire them to dream big, nurture their curiosity, and not stop learning, added that Nigeria is waiting for unique talents and contributions of women and girls, and should remember that the opportunities are limited

In her remark, the principal of the school, Zainab Odekunle, said the project would assist the learning process that the teachers and students would be using for efficient education.

Among dignitaries were the state Head of Service, Olubunmi Oni; Commissioner for Women Affairs, Toyin Balogun; Commissioner for Education, Saliu Adelabu; Commissioner for Works and Transportation, Daud Sangodoyin; as well as Commissioner for Special Duties, Faosat Sanni.

Customs release 15 trucks of seized food items 

The Nigeria Customs Service, Sokoto/Zamfara Area Command, has released 15 seized trucks of grains in its command to the owners.

This development was announced in a statement on Tuesday by the Public Relations Officer of the command, Abdullahi Abubakar.

Abubakar said the development was in compliance with the Presidential directive.

Recall that President Tinubu, over the weekend directed the NCS to return all food items that were confiscated at border communities to owners on the condition that they would be sold in the Nigerian markets to boost food sufficiency.

However, the Customs Area Comptroller in charge of the command, Kamal Mohammed, while handing over the trucks of grain at the command’s headquarters in Sokoto, charged the traders to reciprocate President Bola Tinubu’s magnanimity by ensuring that the grains were sold to Nigerian markets.

Kamal added that the command, in collaboration with the Customs Intelligence Unit and the Joint Border Patrol Team, “would monitor the sales of these grains in Nigerian markets and ensure they were not smuggled out of the country.”

He further enlightened traders and the general public that grains are under the extant Export Prohibition list.

The Comptroller warned smugglers to desist from smuggling grains.

He added that the service has resolved to fight smuggling in all ramifications.

Kamal said that the command would make the borders unsafe heaven for smugglers, “unpatriotic elements penchant to make money at the detriment of the country.”

In response, the Secretary of the Grain Sellers Association of Sokoto, Dahiru Ladan, thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for tempering justice with mercy.

He assured the president that the union would ensure that the grains were sold to Nigerian markets.

The House of Representatives, on Tuesday, passed for a second reading a bill seeking to establish the Nigerian Mining Development Bank to promote and enhance investment in the sector of the economy.

The proposed law titled “A bill for an act to establish the Nigerian Mining Development Bank, was sponsored by a member representing Idemili North/Idemili South Federal Constituency, Anambra State, Mr Uchenna Okonkwo.

Okonkwo, in his lead debate, said the establishment of a mining development bank would benefit the country immensely, as it will provide access to funding for mining and mining-related activities.

The lawmaker argued that “One of the primary challenges facing the mining sector in Nigeria is lack of access to finances for mining projects. The mining sector often involves high risks, including geological, operational, and market risks. A specialised bank can help mitigate these risks by providing financial instruments such as guarantees, insurance, and risk-sharing mechanisms.

“The bank can support the development of mining projects by providing funding for exploration, feasibility studies, infrastructure development and other critical stages of project development.”

Okonkwo further explained that the NMDB, if established, would also support capacity-building initiatives in the mining sector, promote local participation in the sector, and improve the revenue profile of the nation.

He said, “By promoting local participation in the mining sector, the bank can help enhance local content development, create employment opportunities, and foster economic empowerment in mining communities.

“The bank can play a crucial role in promoting environmentally and socially sustainable mining practices by providing funding for projects that adhere to best practices in environmental management, community engagement, and social responsibility.”

Kogi assembly confirms two commissioner nominees, 50 special

The Kogi State House of Assembly has approved two commissioner nominees sent to the house by the Governor of the State, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo.

The Assembly confirmed the commissioner nominees on Tuesday during the house plenary in Lokoja.

The Commissioner nominees confirmed include; Dr Adeniyi Helen Aderibigbe, (Ijumu) and Atuluku Levi Victor, from Omala State Constituency.

Speaking to journalists shortly after her confirmation on Tuesday, Aderibigbe promised to put in her best in realising the campaign promises of the present administration.

Aderibigbe reiterated her commitment to making Kogi State and Nigeria proud through hard work and diligence in her duties. 

She stated, “As the name of my ministry implies innovation, so the first thing to be brought in is innovation. We will review what is on the ground. It is a new ministry, but is not a strange ministry. 

“There has been precedent as it regards the ministry. We will study what is on the ground, take our review, and see areas where improvement has to be made. If there is a need for change, we will change. If there is a need for restructuring we will restructure.

“That is the innovation aspect of it, which will encourage the scientific approach to almost every issue that is on the ground. We will study every problem on the ground, and then we devise means of providing solutions for the problem. For us, this is the technological aspect of it. I want to see Kogi State that other State will be emulating in terms of technological improvement” she added.

The assembly also approved 50 special advisers to serve under the government of Kogi state.

Delta police arrest two suspected kidnappers, four cultists

The Delta State Police Command has announced the arrest of two suspected kidnappers and four suspected cultists in separate operations.

This was disclosed in a statement, by the command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Edafe Bright, on Tuesday.

The statement partly read, “On 31/10/2023 at about 2217hrs, the DPO Orerokpe, CSP Paul Oboware, received a distress call about a suspected kidnap of one man (name withheld) by three armed men. The kidnappers later contacted the family demanding Five Million Naira ransom.

“Upon receipt of the report, the DPO swiftly mobilised and led detectives to the scene of the incident, combed all adjoining streets and bushes in search of hoodlums, to possibly rescue the victim.

“The victim was later released after an undisclosed ransom was paid.”

The statement added that the DPO continued investigations on the incident which paid off on March 5th, 2024, when one Peter Idogor (24) and Emmanuel Sunday (19) from Evwreni Community were apprehended through a technology-aided investigation as a search for the remaining gang members is ongoing.

The suspects were also said to have been identified by the victim.

According to the statement, in another operation on March 6, 2024, while acting on a tip about cult activity, the CP-DECOY Squad raided a hotel near Asaba’s Federal College Junction.

Upon seeing the officers, some of the suspects fled, while four were apprehended while hiding in the ceiling.

The statement partly read, “Upon sighting the operatives, the cultists immediately took to their heels, dispersing towards different directions but were given a relentless chase by the operatives, during which four of the suspected cultists who were hiding inside the ceiling, were arrested.

“The suspects, all male residents of Asaba, Delta State, include the following: Chigozie Edwin, a 28yrs native of Akpuoga Village in Ujodo LGA of Enugu State; James Prince Chukwuebuka, a 20yrs native of Effiom Village in Ezza North LGA of Ebonyi State; Harmony Mkemjika Ohanebum, a 30yrs native of Okija Town in Ihiala LGA of Anambra State; and Garba Jubril, a 27yrs native of Kogmbotō LGA, Kano State.

“Following the arrest of these suspects, a thorough search was conducted, and two Barretta Pistols with two rounds of Live Ammunition, a locally made cut-to-size gun with one live cartridge, were recovered from the ceiling.

“Manhunt for the other fleeing members of the gang is ongoing.”

Reacting to the arrests, the state’s Police Commissioner, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, in the statement instructed officers of the command to spare no effort in bringing criminals to account for their actions, warning that engaging in any sort of criminal activities in the state has dire consequences.

The Senator representing Bauchi Central, Abdul Ningi, has resigned as the chairman of the Northern Senators Forum.

Although the resignation letter was dated March 11, a copy was made public shortly after Ningi was suspended for three months by the Senate over his statement on the alleged padding of the 2024 budget.

Ningi, in a letter sent to the forum, wrote, “I will like to resign my position as the Chairman of the Northern Senators forum.

“This is of course necessitated by unfolding events in the National Assembly, the North and the nation at large.

“I will like to especially thank members of the forum for the opportunity given to me for the last eight months to spearhead this very important forum. I believe this forum is very important and fundamental to the progress and development of Northern Nigeria,”

Ningi was suspended after about three hours of debate over his interview where he alleged that the National Assembly padded the 2024 N28.7tn budget.

The Senate also warned Senator Suleiman Kawu (NNPP, Kano South) against sharing and distributing disturbing news about the Senate.

Catholic organisations urge Edo lawmakers to stop Shaibu’s impeachment 

Seven Catholic organisations on Tuesday urged the Edo State House of Assembly to drop the impeachment move against the state Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu.

Last Wednesday, the House of Assembly, commenced impeachment proceedings against Shaibu, accusing him of perjury and leaking of government’s secrets.

The impeachment notice is believed to be the latest development in the rift between Shaibu and his principal, Governor Godwin Obaseki.

There had been an uneasy calm between the deputy governor and his principal since last year when Shaibu declared his interest to join this year’s Edo governorship race.

However, the Assembly on Monday directed that the impeachment notice be published on national dailies (by substitution) as it has become to serve the deputy governor the letter in person.

Some of the catholic groups in the joint letter to the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku, included Catholic Action Nigeria, Catholic Lawyers, Catholic Men Organisation of Nigeria, Catholic Women Organisation of Nigeria, Catholic Youth Organisation of Nigeria, Catholic Girls Organisation of Nigeria, and Catholic Laity Council of Nigeria.

Presenting the letter to Agbebaku in the presence of some principal officers of the House, Steve Apologun, who is the Benin Provincial president of the CMO on behalf of the groups, said there was the need for peace in the state ahead of the September 21 governorship election.

The letter written from the Department of Church and Society, Catholic Secretariat, Abuja also urged the Edo lawmakers to take into cognisance how Shaibu was prevailed upon to withdraw all court cases about his impeachment by religious leaders led by the Archbishop of Benin City, Augustine Akubeze, when the impeachment saga first started last year which he said Shaibu complied with.

While appreciating the legislative roles of the members of the state House of Assembly and their constitutional duties, they appealed for caution “to ensure that your legislative responsibilities are not perceived as a political witch-hunt against the deputy governor due to his political disagreement with the governor.

“We call for a careful approach on this matter with a focus on dialogue and peace, rather than creating further tension in the state.

“We would like to draw your attention to the fact that our Chief Shepherd, His Grace, Most Revd Dr Augustine Akubeze, Catholic Archbishop of Benin City, has tirelessly worked towards promoting peace and reconciliation between His Excellency, the governor, Godwin Obaseki and his deputy governor, Philip Shaibu. As part of the reconciliation process initiated by our Archbishop, there was a mutual agreement for the Deputy Governor to withdraw the legal action that sought to halt the initial alleged impeachment process.

“As Catholic lay faithful and eligible voters, we are saddened by the current impeachment process, which is perceived by the public as a political witch-hunt. This perception reflects disrespect towards our Archbishop and the intervention of other respected religious and traditional leaders in the state. Therefore, we humbly request your intervention and alignment with the peace process initiated by our Archbishop and other respected leaders within and outside the state.

“As leaders, our commitment lies in promoting peaceful coexistence and good governance. Once again, we assure you and the well-meaning residents of Edo State that we will fulfil our responsibility in the upcoming gubernatorial election to educate, sensitize, and mobilize our lay faithful and other voters in Edo State on the importance of identifying desirable qualities in prospective candidates and the need to support anyone found with integrity and the ability to deliver on their promises, regardless of political, tribal, and religious affiliations. This approach which will be applied to future general elections aims to ensure development and good governance in the state and our nation, Nigeria

“We pray for wisdom and discernment in your decision-making process and encourage you to consider this appeal with utmost seriousness and take the necessary steps towards fostering unity, collaboration, and progress for the benefit of Edo State and its people.”

Responding, Agbebaku said he was only a servant leader to the other 23 members of the house and that all of them would be involved and his responsibility is to implement the decisions taken by all of them.

He said, “Yes I am the head of this parliament, we are 24 in number, I am a servant to them all. It is the decision they take that I will follow,” he added.

Atiku denies quitting PDP, slams Tinubu

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has dismissed reports that he has dumped the Peoples Democratic Party.

Atiku described the report as “pure mischief, devoid of truth.”

According to an X statement by Atiku on Tuesday, the claims that he has left PDP were false and from mischief-makers.

In the post, Atiku said he has been inundated with calls from PDP party members, supporters, and concerned Nigerians about a published report alleging that he has left PDP.

“Let me be unequivocal: this is pure mischief, devoid of truth. I reaffirm my unwavering loyalty to the PDP while advocating the swift merger of opposition parties. The urgency of this consolidation cannot be overstated,” he said in the post.

He also slammed President Bola Tinubu, accusing the president of prioritising personal ambitions over the nation’s welfare.

“Tinubu’s relentless pursuit of personal agendas at the expense of national governance is glaring. His myopic focus on 2027 betrays a disregard for the pressing needs of the populace. It’s high time he ceased his bumbling escapades and prioritised the welfare of the people,” he said.

The former vice president revealed that his media team is actively countering the false claim that he was leaving the PDP.

“My media team is vigorously countering his baseless claims. Let this be a wake-up call to all: the pursuit of power must not overshadow the imperative of effective governance. Together, let us propel Nigeria forward, leaving behind the antics of political charlatans,” Abubakar wrote.

Manchester United midfielder Mason Mount returned to training on Tuesday after four months out with a calf injury.

Mount has made just 12 appearances in all competitions for United since his £60 million ($76 million) transfer from Chelsea before the start of this season.

The 25-year-old last played when he came off the bench in United’s 1-0 win against Luton in November.

Even when he was fit to feature, Mount struggled to make an impact, leading some to brand the England international a flop.

But Mount could still have a chance to silence the critics this season after United confirmed he was back in training, having “remained upbeat and positive throughout his rehabilitation”.

The playmaker’s long-awaited return came just days after Erik ten Hag offered a promising update on his status.

“Mason Mount, I think he is in a good spell now and he will return shortly,” Ten Hag said on Friday. “I think after the international break.”

Mount is unlikely to feature in Sunday’s FA Cup quarter-final against Liverpool, but could be involved when United travel to Brentford on March 30.
