Ogun alumni decries land grabbers takeover of school

0

The National President of Ijebu Muslim College Old Students Association, Ijebu Ode, Mr Olawale Salami, has raised the alarm over the activities of the land grabbers who have taken over the school’s land reserved for farming activities and further development.

Salami said that the lack of perimeter fencing of the school had exposed the school to security breaches, urging a quick intervention from Ogun State government to arrest the ugly trend.

The National president spoke recently during the annual reunion of the old students of the school as well as the commissioning of a block of six classrooms and a coding, robotics and drone operation training centre donated by the old students.

Salami said, “We wish to appeal to the Ogun State Government to come to our rescue to stop the regular security breaches and encroachment of the school land by reconstructing the collapsed fence in front of the school and building a wall fence at the back of the school where we have a large unoccupied space, which we plan to use for farming activities. The unoccupied land is being encroached upon by the land grabbers.”

He urged the government to set up an alumni partnership board, which would help to strengthen the cooperation between government and alumni associations in tackling myriads of challenges plaguing the education sector in the state.

Salami stated, “As stakeholders in the education sector in Ogun State, the old students and other alumni associations in the state will continue to partner with the government in the quest for positive advancement of secondary schools in the state.

“We are willing to continue to serve as partners in progress and work together with the government to achieve the needed improvements, knowing fully well that the government cannot do it alone.”

Also, the Commissioner for Education, Prof Abayomi Arigbabu, lauded the alumni association for deeming it fit to ally with the government by investing in the future of young minds in the school.

Arigbabu commended the old students for donating a block of six classrooms renovated and equipped with tables and chairs by 1973/77 set as well as the coding, robotics and drone operation training centre donated by a former President of the alumni association, Olalekan Ajia.

He explained that those projects would go a long way to help the students to achieve their academic goals.

He appreciated the association for being partners in progress with Abiodun, who was determined to revamp the education sector.

The commissioner urged other old students to go back to their former schools and see what they could do to complement the efforts of the state government in making the much-expected difference in providing qualitative education for the residents of the state.

Electricity workers strike worsens blackout in northern states

0

Workers of the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company have begun an industrial action, leaving residents of Kaduna, Sokoto, Zamfara and Kebbi states in darkness.

The workers, under the aegis of the Nigerian Union of Electricity Employees, commenced an indefinite strike on Tuesday after staging a protest over what they termed unjust treatment and other pending industrial disputes with the management of the company.

It was learnt the workers were aggrieved over six years’ unremitted pension, non-payment of the death benefits of deceased staff of the company, non-payment of exit package,  unjust disengagement of seven staff of the company in Zaria, an alleged plan to sack over 1,000 workers of the company among others.

But the management of Kaduna Disco condemned the industrial action in a statement issued by its Head, Corporate Communication, Abdulazeez Abdullahi,  describing the action as “completely unjustified”

Abdulazeez said, “For the union to choose this path at the very start of the Holy month of Ramadan and inflict more discomfort on hapless Nigerians by embarking on an ill-advised strike and forcing staff from carrying out their legitimate duties says a lot about its motive.”

Abdulazeez disclosed that the union’s demand for payment of outstanding pension arrears “is part of the historic debts accumulated under two previous managements.

“One wonders why the union failed to prioritise the payments then until now. This is a clear indication that the union has other motives yet unknown to us”.

According to him, since the assumption of office of Mr Umar Hashidu as the new chief executive officer of the Disco in January this year, he had demonstrated a willingness to work with the unions to move Kaduna Electric forward.

“He has held a series of meetings with them to get their buy-in into his plans to turn the company around. It, therefore, beggars belief why NUEE has chosen the route of industrial action instead of coming round to discuss whatever perceived grievance it may have,” he stated

Abdulazeez recalled that the “staff enjoyed a salary increment in the CEO’s very first month in office, in addition to a commitment to pay salaries when due,” saying that he has also committed to a plan to offset all liabilities as more resources become available.

“This strike action does no good to anyone but some individuals whose motive is still unclear. We urge our esteemed customers to disregard it and go about their dealings with us unhindered,” he stated.

Kaduna Electric had in February announced a 10 per cent increment in salaries of its employees, despite the company’s N110bn debt.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, in January, dissolved the board of directors of Kaduna Electric over its inability to pay N110bn debt it owes the Nigeria Electricity Supply Industry.

LASG counsels Lagosians on safety along rail lines

0

In its bid to prevent accidents on the rail lines in the state, the Lagos State Government has charged community leaders, local government chairpersons, railway transport operators, and regulators to enlighten residents on the need to be safety conscious and avert hazards on the state’s rail lines.

The Lagos State Safety Commission made the plea on Tuesday during a workshop organised by the Lagos State Safety Commission in conjunction with the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority in the Gbagada area of the state.

This call follows the inauguration of the Blue and Red Lines rail.

On March 9, 2023, no fewer than six persons were confirmed dead by the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital after a bus rapid transit attempting to cross a rail track rammed into a moving train. The train reportedly dragged the BRT from Shogunle to the PWD area of Ikeja before it finally stopped.

While speaking during a workshop tagged “Safe by design: Building a culture of railway safety in Lagos State,” the Director General of the commission, Lanre Mojola, said even though rail transportation remained a secure and cost-effective mode of travel, it was not without safety concerns.

He said, “Across all facets of the railway system—be it tracks, level crossings, overpasses, underpasses, train cabins, or stations—we encounter risks that demand our unwavering attention. These risks include train collisions with pedestrians and vehicles, fire incidents, falls from heights, electrocution, train derailments, and entrapments, among others.

“In alignment with the commission’s mandate to preserve lives by preventing accidents, we have convened this workshop to sensitise the public, particularly our host communities, on effective strategies to avoid these hazards and mitigate their impact.

“Our seasoned railway experts and safety professionals will deliver relevant safety topics, carefully selected to underscore the importance of imbibing a culture of safety within this sector.”

Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, Mr Sesan Ogundeko, explained that the ministry had been entrusted with the task of ensuring the safety of lives and property across all sectors to drive socio-economic activity in the state.

He further emphasised the government’s commitment to railway safety, saying, “That’s why, in preparation for the upcoming Red Line rail and the continued operation of the Blue Line, we’ve organized this crucial railway safety sensitisation.

“This workshop serves a critical purpose: to educate the public and commuters about the occupational safety and health risks associated with railway systems. By familiarising yourselves with the safety protocols at stations, level crossings, and on-board trains, we can cultivate a collective awareness that safeguards everyone.”

A group of people said to be members of the Anambra State Anti-Touts Squad have allegedly beaten a yet-to-be-identified middle-aged man to a coma over an unknown offence.

A video making the rounds on social media on Tuesday showed the men, suspected to be anti-touting officials hitting the man with a short pestle while questioning him over a yet-to-be-known matter.

The video showed one of the Anti-Touts operatives in mufti hitting the victim with a short pestle on his legs and ankles as he struggled for survival.

The operative repeatedly hit his victim with the pestle while his colleagues were making the video, as the victim was rolling on the ground, helplessly crying and begging them to allow him to explain.

In the video, while the man being beaten tried to explain to them that his wife was pregnant and that he didn’t want to die without seeing his child, the anti-tout operatives told him that they wanted him dead, adding that they had not come there to joke with him.

The operatives were also overheard querying him about a fee allegedly collected by the victim’s brother at Niger Street, Onitsha, which they said was being remitted to him.

The video has continued to attract wide condemnations across the state and the general public wondered why Anti-tout operatives should subject someone to such inhumane treatment, instead of being handed over to the police for appropriate investigation and possible prosecution.

It was gathered that the incident happened in Onitsha, an Anambra State commercial city, and the victim, who has been rushed to the hospital, is said to be in critical condition.

When contacted on the development, on Tuesday, the state police command spokesman, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, said there was no report from any man who was said to have been allegedly assaulted by the Anambra State Special Anti-touting Squad.

Ikenga said, “I don’t have any information on it, I don’t know the man on the video, and there is no report like that before us.

“I also saw the video trending, but we are trying to reach out to the man in question, but I don’t have any information on it, it is a recent development.”

Also contacted for comments, the Public Relations Officer, Anambra Anti-Touts Squad, Nweke Nweke, said that he would issue an official statement in that regard in due course.

The According had reported that the Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, inaugurated the State Anti-Touts Squad in 2023 to tackle the increasing spate of touting in the state.

PAP worries over ex-agitators poor performance in scholarship exam

0

The leadership of the Presidential Amnesty Programme has expressed concern over the poor academic performance of some former agitators who are recipients of the scheme’s tertiary education scholarships in their recent examinations.

The programme was established in 2009 by the late Umaru Yar’Adua and aimed at encouraging  Niger Delta militants to drop their arms.

Last week,  the Interim Administrator, the Presidential Amnesty Programme, Maj. Gen. Barry Ndiomu (retd), stated that so far, a total of 1,659 student beneficiaries under the PAP scholarship scheme have graduated from offshore universities.

A statement on Tuesday by the the Administrator’s Special Assistant on Media,  Freston Akpor stated that the Head of Reintegration in the Amnesty Office, Wilfred Musa during a meeting with stakeholders and PAP delegates, vowed that it would no longer be business as usual for beneficiaries, as the standards would be raised.

According to the statement,  Musa noted that the programme cannot continue to waste its scarce resources on beneficiaries unwilling to meet the leadership’s expectations.

The statement partly read, “The PAP leadership expressed worry over the poor performance of delegates under its Scholarship Scheme across various higher institutions of learning, stating that rather than engaging in serious reading culture, they are engaged in frivolous petitions against the PAP leadership.

“The interim administrator frowned at the shoddy performance of some delegates in their recent examinations, where some of them were dropped.

To raise the standards, he said PAP has resolved to prioritise admission for delegates into any university of their choice, but it will no longer be business as usual.

“The PAP cannot be involved in wasteful ventures with poor standards. We will only support those who are willing to be trained within the Amnesty Programme”.

He urged the stakeholders to shun divisive tendencies capable of causing disunity in the Niger Delta region.

Speaking, the National President of the PAP Third Phase Leaders, Elaye Slaboh expressed happiness with the current PAP administration.

He said, “We are very happy with the IA. With the way and manner he is handling the Programme, if he continues like this, then the best is yet to come”.

While urging the PAP leadership to capture more third-phase delegates in the Cooperative and Scholarship schemes, he charged them to support the administrator.
