Plateau gov signs executive order on illegal buildings, traffic

0

Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State, on Tuesday, signed an Executive Order to control illegal buildings and vehicular traffic in the state

The General Manager of the Jos Metropolitan Development Board, Hart Bankat, disclosed this at a press conference in Jos on Tuesday.

Bankat said the Executive Order No. 003, 2024 became imperative considering the indiscriminate manner in which buildings were being erected in the state.

The state government had on Monday  shut down some illegal structures in Jos, the state capital.

The owners of the structures were said to have built on government land without the requisite approval from the regulatory authorities.

During the clampdown ,the state’s task force also  arrested 17 persons at a construction site located at the Old Legislative Quarters along the Bauchi Ring Road in Jos.

Speaking on the executive order, Bankat said, “The growing population in Plateau State has led to an increase in vehicular traffic and the haphazard construction of buildings, which has resulted in congestion and safety hazards in our cities. In order to address these challenges and ensure the sustainable development of our state, Governor Caleb, Mutfwang has issued Executive Order No. 003, 2024.

“This executive order aims to regulate the construction of buildings and the flow of vehicular traffic in Plateau State. Under this order, all new building projects must obtain the necessary permits and comply with building codes and regulations. Unauthorised constructions will be demolished in accordance with the law.”

Bankat said the executive order also aimed to streamline vehicular traffic by implementing traffic management measures, “such as designated parking spaces, traffic lights, and road signage. Violators of traffic rules will face strict penalties, including fines and vehicle impoundment.”

“We believe that by enforcing this executive order, we can improve the quality of life for all residents of Plateau State and create a safe and organised urban environment”

The General Manager urged all residents to cooperate with the authorities and adhere to the provisions of Executive Order No. 003, 2024.

President’s wife opens digital economy centre in Oyo

0

The wife of the President, Oluremi Tinubu, on Tuesday, inaugurated a digital economy centre and e-learning facilities donated by her to Ogbomoso Girls High School, Ogbomoso in Oyo State.

She promised that more digital centres would be built in the other states of the federation to enhance the empowerment and training of women in digital literacy.

Represented by the wife of the Oyo State Governor, Tamunominini Makinde, Mrs Tinubu said Nigerians must recognise the role of technology in advancing gender equality by ensuring full participation of women in the digital revolution through access to technology.

She said, “The Renewed Hope Initiative in collaboration with the National Information Technology Development Agency under the National Digital Gender Inclusion Strategy will be extending support to equip more centres in the remaining states of the federation.

“The NITDA will expand opportunities for digital literacy and empowerment by building and equipping three ICT centres in other parts of the country this year. As we speak, one of the centres is currently being inaugurated in Bauchi State.

“Technology has become a positive tool in our world, shaping everything through communication, and commerce, to education and healthcare, therefore, in the derivation of the digital economy, our women must not be left behind.”

In her remark, the Principal of the school, Zainab Odekunle, said the project would benefit both the teachers and students.

Kwara IRS rejects personal income tax payment through unions

0

The Kwara State Internal Revenue Service has said that the existing tax laws in the state do not allow payment of Personal Income Tax through associations, unions or umbrella groups representing business owners in the state.

The Executive Chairman of KW-IRS, Mrs Shade Omoniyi, stated this in a statement she signed and made available to our correspondent on Monday.

“Our taxpayers are once again reminded that in accordance with Section 54 (1) of the Personal Income Tax 2011 as amended, which mandates every taxable person in the state to be assessed individually upon the expiration of the time allowed to file a return as mandated by Section 41 of the Act, we are not allowing the payment of Personal Income Tax or its equivalent through any existing or prospective associations, unions, or umbrella group(s) representing artisans or business owners,” she said.

The KW-IRS boss noted that the revenue service had observed that compliance with payment of Personal Income Tax was low.

“We observe the improved level of tax compliance in the state and the growth in the number of taxpayers over the years, especially among low-income earners. We truly appreciate our stakeholders for their continuous support and commitment to the revenue drive in the State.

“Nevertheless, the service has observed that compliance level is low for some of the high net worth individuals within the state. Taxpayers, particularly HNIs,  are reminded of their right to submit objections to the assessment presented to them as stated in Section 58 of the Personal Income Tax Act 2011 (as amended by the Finance Acts 2019 and 2020), which is then subject to reviews,” she said.

Omoniyi also urged taxpayers to pay all tax liabilities and file needed tax returns.

US general, senior officials hold talks with Niger junta

0

A United States general and top officials visited Niger Republic on Tuesday to see the military junta.

Their visit was to renew contact after the coup leaders ousted the elected leader, Mohamed Bazoum, who booted out French forces and moved closer to Russia.

The commander of US Africa Command, General Michael Langley, was part of the delegation that is visiting Niger on Wednesday, the State Department said.

Top diplomat, Antony Blinken, on March 15, 2023, embarked on an official trip to the Niger Republic.

Blinken’s visit came as the West African country emerged as an increasingly significant partner to the US and its European allies in the Sahel region, following successive coups in Mali and Burkina Faso and the growing influence of Russia’s Wagner mercenary group.

Just four months later, the military deposed Bazoum and put him under house arrest. The junta took a hardline against former colonial power France, forcing the withdrawal of French troops in place for nearly a decade.

Niger’s military, which had worked closely with the United States, has not demanded a similar pullout of US forces.

But the junta has sought cooperation with Russia while stopping short of the full-fledged embrace of Moscow by military-run neighbors Mali and Burkina Faso.

Also joining the delegation in Niger were Molly Phee, the top State Department official for Africa, and Celeste Wallander, the assistant secretary of defense for international security affairs.

Earlier, the Economic Community of West African States imposed economic sanctions on the country

The sanctions were, however, lifted three weeks ago following the intervention of Nigeria’s ex-military head of state, Gen. Yakubu Gowon.

The President, ECOWAS Commission, Omar Touray, said the decisions were taken in the interest of unity and security in the African sub-region.

However, in a brief statement, the State Department, said the US delegation will hold talks with the junta on “Niger’s return to a democratic path and the future of our security and development partnership,” as quoted by AFP.

The United States still stations some 1,000 troops in Niger at a desert drone base built for $100 million, although movements have been limited since the coup and Washington has curbed assistance to the government.

Aiyedatiwa declares gov bid, gets Reps, 18 lawmakers’ endorsement

0

Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, on Tuesday, formally declared his intention to contest the November 16 governorship election in the state.

Aiyedatiwa, surrounded by his loyalists and supporters, made the declaration at the Gani Fawehinmi Arcade, Akure, amid fanfare.

Aiyedatiwa, who became the governor of the state on December 27, 2023, following the demise of his principal, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, will be contesting the governorship ticket of the All Progressives Congress at a primary coming up in April.

His formal declaration was graced by some elders and leaders of the Ondo State APC, including former Ondo North Senatorial District senator, Ajayi Boroffice; a member of the House of Representatives, Mr Abiola Makinde, members of the state House of Assembly, representatives of the State Working Committee of the party, among others.

Speaking at the event, Aiyedatiwa said he sought to retain the governorship seat to continue from where his late principal stopped, particularly in the area of welfare of the people,  infrastructural development and security of the state.

He said, “Distinguished citizens and party faithful, I must reecho what our late leader had always wished for in his lifetime. It was his wish that I succeed him, not in death though, as the next governor of the state.

“He (Akeredolu) was a courageous and visionary leader who had no time for pretense and so he expressed this wish at different fora in both public and private. All was with one conviction and implicit confidence in me to carry on the torch of accelerated development which he lighted first in 2017 and later renewed under a joint ticket for both of us in the 2021 gubernatorial election.

“My dear people of Ondo State, the gubernatorial primary election is at hand. Your vote is a potent weapon that must be wisely used. We must reject those who seek to buy our conscience with money. We must stop those who seek to govern this state with muscles. That is not what our late legends and founding fathers, who once governed this state, handed to our generation.”

In his remarks, the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Mr Olamide Oladiji, who spoke on behalf of the majority members of the Assembly, said 18 of of the 26 state lawmakers were ready to support the governor.

“We have about 18 members of the Ondo State House of Assembly here with Governor Aiyedatiwa. The Ondo House is for Aiyedatiwa, even those who are not APC, they are in the same struggle with us. My advice to our leaders across the 18 local governments is, go back to your local governments and do the needful. Let the reconciliation continue;  come April 24 ( primary), we will deliver for Honourable Aiyedatiwa. On behalf of the honorable members of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Mr Governor, congratulations in advance.”

A member of the House of Representatives, representing Ondo East/Ondo West Federal Constituency Mr Abiola Makinde, said all the members of the House of Representatives from the state had endorsed Aiyedatiwa as the governor.

“This is my second time as Rep; it’s not easy to hold a public office. Aiyedatiwa is the right man to govern our state for the next four years. He has done well in the few weeks of taking over the office. He will do well in four years. We, members of House of Representatives from Ondo State, have endorsed Governor Aiyedatiwa.”

At the APC governorship primary scheduled for April 24, Aiyedatiwa will be slugging it out with other aspirants, such as a former Commissioner for Finance, Mr Wale Akinterinwa; a former member of the House of Representatives, Mayowa Akinfolarin; a former Secretary to the State Government, Mrs Oladunni Odu; and a former Special Adviser to Governor Akeredolu on Health, Prof Francis Faduyile.

Others include a former governorship aspirant of the APC, Chief Olusola Oke; a former Chairman of the Ondo State Oil-producing Areas Development Commission, Mr Gbenga Edema; Senator Jimoh Ibrahim; Dr Paul Akintelure and  Brig. Gen. Olamide Ohunyeye (retd.).

Don’t act like Buhari, negotiate with bandits, Gumi tells Tinubu

0

Kaduna-based Muslim cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, on Tuesday, sought government’s permission to approach and have talks with bandits who abducted about 287 schoolchildren from Kuriga Government Secondary and LEA Primary Schools in the Chikun Local Government Area of the state.

The Islamic cleric insisted that dialogue was the way to go, calling on President Bola Tinubu to take a different approach from his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari, who rejected the dialogue.

The According reports that bandits invaded the Kuriga area of the Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State, shooting at their victims before taking away at least 280 of the pupils and teachers from both schools.

The incident occurred barely 24 hours after insurgents abducted 200 internally displaced women in Borno State.

The women were kidnapped in Ngala, the headquarters of Gambarou Ngala in Borno State, while fetching firewood in the bush.

Penultimate Thursday, bandits invaded the Gonin-Gora in the same Chikun LGA, prompting residents to barricade the Kaduna-Abuja Expressway in protest against the abduction of an unspecified number of people in the area.

Meanwhile, the government of the affected state has refused to dialogue with the bandits to release the schoolchildren and has also refuted claims that it had hired a private negotiator to facilitate the release of the victims.

However, reacting to the development, Gumi said in a statement, “The government’s stand of no negotiation with the bandits is an unfortunate position. My advice is that the government should dialogue with the bandits not only for these Kuriga school children’s abductions but all cases.

“Also, the government should use the same approach it used in releasing passengers that were abducted on the Abuja–Kaduna train in 2022 to release the Kuriga school children and others.

“I am ready to lead a holistic dialogue between the government and bandits. It is my religious duty to do so for peace.

“I hope the present government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will listen by dialoguing with the bandits because the past administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari refused to do so.”

Gumi had previously negotiated on behalf of state governments to free abducted people by bandits.

In May 2021, one of the parents of the kidnapped students of the Federal College of Forestry Mechanisation, Afaka, Kaduna State, said rather than point an accusing finger at Gumi for being complicit in the banditry ravaging the country, Nigerians should commend the cleric for his interventions in seeking the release of abducted persons in the country.

Unity Bank, SkillPaddy train 1,000 female software engineers

0

Unity Bank Plc has partnered with tech platform, SkillPaddy, to train 1,000 female software engineers.

The training, which was tagged ‘Count Her In’ tech programme, focused on empowering female beneficiaries with software engineering skills.

According to a statement from the bank, the IT skill development and empowerment initiative is intended to bridge talent supply gaps while providing individuals with the opportunity to meet their training goals and launch careers in the tech industry.

Speaking on the partnership, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Unity Bank Plc, Mrs Tomi Somefun, said the initiative aligned with the theme of the IWD 2024, #InspireInclusion.

She added that empowering young women reflected the bank’s commitment to driving inclusion, equality and diversity across industries.

She stated, “As a bank committed to fostering economic empowerment and gender equality, we are proud to partner with SkillPaddy on this initiative to contribute to the training and empowerment of 1,000 female software engineers.

“Through this programme, we are not only investing in the future of these talented women but also driving innovation and diversity within the tech industry. By providing access to skills training and mentorship, we aim to unlock opportunities and create a more inclusive and thriving digital economy for all.”

She disclosed that about 40 young girls would receive full sponsorship from Unity Bank in the special training initiative, which was conceived as part of activities to commemorate this year’s International Women’s Day 2024.

According to Somefun, all beneficiaries of the programme will be trained on different aspects of software development and provided with mentorship and resources that they need to succeed, including learning life skills like critical thinking, communication, innovation & problem-solving.

Women make up just 33 per cent of the tech-related workforce globally.

Unity Bank recently partnered with a software training provider, AltSchool Africa, to sponsor female students to acquire specialist software development skills.

Clark, Osoba back return to parliamentary govt

0

Elder statesman, Chief Edwin Clark and ex-Ogun State Governor, Chief Olusegun Osoba, have pledged their support for the proposed amendment to the 1999 Constitution to move the country from the current presidential system of governance to the parliamentary system.

Last month, 60 members of the House of Representatives, led by the Minority Leader, Kingsley Chinda, presented constitution alterations bills for first reading on the floor of the House, seeking to return the country to the parliamentary system.

Speaking during the meeting with Clark at his Abuja residence on Tuesday, Chinda said the lawmakers were bent on making governance count, noting that the presidential system was too expensive to run.

“The present style of presidential system that we are running in Nigeria is too cumbersome for our country, for our background, for our experience and cannot, in any way, be repaired as we stand today.

“A governor and president can run the state or the country for four years without talking to Nigerians. He has committed no offence against our laws. That is why you will hear the likes of Garba Shehu, (Ajuri) Ngelale, talking to Nigerians instead of the number one citizen of the country.

“During COVID-19,  all of us were here, other countries were having briefings weekly by their Presidents but our President did not do it. We must have a system where public officeholders, including ourselves that you have elected, will be more accountable to you, the people. A system where public officeholders will be on ground, not administering by proxy.

“Our leader, we came with one agenda and as representatives elected into the House of Representatives of Nigeria to make laws for the good governance of this country, to make law for the peace and progress of this country – Nigeria.

“We will not shy away from the fact that our country is not where we all expected it to be today. We are not here to lay blames, our job is to look for solutions.”

In his  response, Clark applauded the lawmakers’ initiative, noting that. “The restructuring of Nigeria can no longer wait, otherwise there will be no Nigeria.”

Speaking after a closed-door meeting with the lawmakers at his Abuja residence, former  Ogun governor, Osoba, described the parliamentary system of government as the “most economical,” remarking that “The centre is too loaded.”

“How can somebody in Abuja stay here and want to control the primary education in Kanuri, in Sokoto, in Bayelsa, in Ogun State? The culture is different.

“Take the issue of security for instance. Security is very local. When people kidnap, if you make security local, people who know their terrain will easily know where these terrorists are hiding. We have to devolve power,” Osoba.

The 60 lawmakers pushing for the parliamentary system had last month also got the backing of Kano elder statesman and business mogul, Alhaji Aminu Dantata.

Backing the proposition, Dantata said apart from being cheaper, the parliamentary system would enhance Nigeria’s stability by making the country easier to govern.

“The parliamentary system is better and cheaper for Nigeria than the presidential system, which is very costly, especially with the current economic situation in the country.

“I hope and pray that you will get more members in the assembly to support the project,” he said.

Mr President, make haste

0

President Bola Tinubu must make haste to lighten the overwhelming burden thrust on Nigerians by his sudden removal of fuel subsidy. The removal is quite laudable but the decision should have been taken by his cabinet. The government needs to act fast on the naira slump. Our national currency needs to be stabilised at about N650 to $1. The non-fixation of the naira has affected everything. The President needs to surround himself with very capable and honest people with an even spread through all the 36 states of the federation.

His present cabinet should be reduced immediately by half. It is an unwieldy cabinet as of now. No urgent decision can be arrived at, at such a gathering. Three permanent secretaries could be asked to merge the ministries and report back within 24 hours.

President Tinubu has no excuse for any failure. The President can study the successes of leaders like the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, and the late Lateef Jakande. Outside the shores of Nigeria, he can also study the achievements of the late Chancellor of the then West Germany Konrad Adenauer and his economic minister, Prof. Ludwig Erhard. For the record, the late President Park of South Korea led his people to prosperity.

I will strongly advise Tinubu to watch local television channels every day, for about 30 minutes; He should not wholly rely on what his advisers write and tell him. He will thereby be presented with current realities in the country.

The value of the naira needs to be fixed quickly. I am not an economist to suggest solutions. As an 85-year-old person, I am finding the costs of my prescribed medical drugs that I have to buy prohibitively expensive. They are mostly treble in price to what was obtained before the President assumed office.

Nigeria does not need a military rule. It would be foolhardy for a military officer to try to rule Nigeria in the present circumstances. The Nigerian Army should safeguard Nigerian borders. We should leave the civilian politicians to sort out Nigeria. But politicians should not live an ostentatious lifestyle; they must be upright.

Tinubu must restore confidence in his capacity to govern. He must be ready to admit that some of his policies have had very negative and unintended consequences. The floating of the naira has brought misery to the populace. Nigeria is on the edge of a precipice and he must save this country from further bloodshed and misery. He must make the environment good for all. People have to be productive once more. An atmosphere conducive to business, farmers and all others is once again essential for productivity. The rains are early in 2024 and this portends a future good harvest. The army should safeguard Nigerian political borders, not warehouses.

Another thing expected from the President is that he must be economical in handling the financial situation of the country. He should avoid prioritising white elephant above social amenities and infrastructure which the country is in dire need of. If I were Tinubu, I would work with all vigour during this term of four years and lay a good foundation for the survival of Nigeria with all tribes living in harmony.

Fear in Lagos community as abandoned building transforms into hoodlums’ hideout

0

VICTOR AYENI writes that the activities of suspected criminals in an abandoned building around Tokunbo Kelani Street, in Igando, Lagos, are heightening fear among residents of the area

The residents of the Tokunbo Kelani community in the Igando area of Lagos State could hardly contain their fear as they pointed in the direction of an eerie abandoned building on their street.

The area, which is close to the Alimosho General Hospital, is often quiet during the day as residents go about their businesses.

But on most nights, residents described a surge of negative energy emanating from a certain abandoned building on the street which they insisted had become a haven for kidnappers and other shades of criminals.

From the Isheri-Igando Expressway, there is an access road at the General Hospital bus stop which leads into Akeem Oke Street which then links to Tokunbo Kelani Street.

When The According visited the area on Tuesday last week, landlords in the area complained of hearing strange noises coming from the abandoned building on some nights, including cries from some people pleading for their lives to be spared.

The building, a ground-floor structure with a decked roof, is situated at the intersection of Akeem Oke and Tokunbo Kelani streets.

Our correspondent gathered that though the building which had been abandoned for over 20 years and had been marked for demolition several times by Lagos State agencies, the planned demolition had not been enforced.

According to documents presented by landlords in the community, the building was wrongfully erected to obstruct the link road between Akeem Oke and Tokunbo Kelani, a development that residents said had led to several incidents of flooding in the area.

Our correspondent observed that the building was surrounded by two structures, one of which was a church tent suspended on wooden pillars.

The church had no benches or chairs, only an altar with a crucifix placed on it and three white plastic chairs stationed close to it. A censer was seen on the church’s bare earth floor.

The next closest building, though uncompleted, had plastered walls, doors, and windows, but The According learned that its owner, one Mrs Olufunlayo Olowoyo, had abandoned the structure.

Church without members

Residents who spoke with our correspondent expressed doubt that the church close to the abandoned building was a real one.

According to them, the alleged owner of the church was identified as Taiwo Adepoju, popularly called ‘Prophet Elijah’.

A landlord in the community, Lanre Bammeke, told The According that the church had no other members except Adepoju, his wife, and son, adding that the man was known to burn strange things at night and place sacrifices at some locations in the area.

Bammeke said, “I don’t believe that place is a church. It seems to be more of a shrine. Though they have crosses and some icons there, there are no members there.

“The only people who come to the tent are the prophet or babalawo, his wife, and his son. Nobody else goes there.

“On some nights, a foul smell or something being burnt emanates from that tent. Sometimes, these things smell like flesh being burnt, but we can’t be sure, other residents have complained on several occasions, but this Prophet Elijah threatens anyone who confronts him and he boasted of being responsible for strange deaths in the community.

“That is why some people here are afraid to speak out. We have complained several times of the smoke and stench that emanates from his tent but nothing has been done about it. The prophet claims to be caring for people with mental disorders and he keeps them in the abandoned building. He is known to sleep with the females he says he’s caring for and impregnates them.”

While our correspondent was in the area, he saw a young woman, probably in her 20s who walked out of the abandoned building, strolled around the compound, and went back to sit on a bench in the house.

She was garbed in a brown native blouse and wrapper and had a protruding belly but was unresponsive when spoken to and seemed not to be aware of where she was.

Bammeke informed our correspondent that the lady was one of Adepoju’s clients who was pregnant.

“Adepoju is not a landlord in the community and he doesn’t own a property around here, but he has been occupying the second building which had been abandoned for over 20 years.

“We want the authorities to investigate what is going on here. In the night, we hear strange cries coming from abandoned buildings and perceive things being burnt, but in the morning, everywhere will be clean except for some ashes of God knows what. This site is probably being used as a criminal hideout,” he added.

We hear people pleading for their lives – Chairman

In an interview with our correspondent, the Chairman of the Tokunbo Kelani Street Landlord Association, Alhaji Ganiyu Salau, said residents had complained of hearing cries of people pleading for their lives coming from the abandoned buildings.

“We have hired some vigilance groups but they all left after some time. On some nights, we hear strange noises, screams, and pleadings possibly from kidnapped people coming from the abandoned and illegally constructed building.

“We hear noises like, ‘Please don’t kill me,’ ‘I will pay,’ at various intervals. By daybreak, one of the buildings becomes empty and deserted only for such to recur again after some days or weeks. It’s as if these criminals have mastered ways of cleaning things up by daybreak.

“We don’t know who these people are and we don’t know what they are capable of doing. Who knows, they might even use the abandoned structure to store explosives.”

When our correspondent visited an elder in the community who gave his name only as Mr Olowokiti, he pointed out that after several petitions written by residents, the structures were marked for demolition, but had not been pulled down.

He said, “I was a former community development area chairman here and the road linking Akeem Oke with Tokunbo Oke used to be thoroughly broad; it was the abandoned structures that blocked it.

“We have made arrangements, we have written several letters, we have been to Alausa, we’ve also been to Alimosho and they agreed to come to open the road but they said we should pay a certain amount. During the rainy season, that place is completely flooded. We want the state government and the authorities to save this community from the menace of criminals and remove these structures obstructing the main street.”

One of the letters written by the community landlord association to the state Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources was sighted by our correspondent.

Titled ‘Petition on Abandoned/Illegally Constructed Building Blocking Main Road and Suspected of Being Used as Kidnapping Abode,’ and dated February 24, partly read, “The abandoned/illegally constructed building has of recent become an abode of criminals, suspected kidnappers, robbers, and could be illegal storage for explosives, consequences of which cannot be imagined.

“The building is also an obstruction to drainages, hence causing serious floods during the rainy season into various houses on the street. Officials of the Lagos State Government, Lagos State Building Control Agency, and Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority have visited the place several times and marked the building for demolition in the past 20 years at different times, but the demolition has yet to be carried out.”

Prophet mum

However, when The  According visited the house where residents claimed Adepoju lived in the area, the gates were shut.

When our correspondent asked to speak with the prophet, a woman answered from inside the building saying that the prophet was not available.

Other attempts to speak with Adepoju on his phone proved abortive as the number was switched off as of the time of filing this report.

LASG plans demolition

Meanwhile, The According learnt that following the letter of petitions to the state agencies, officials of LASPPA visited the structures again for an assessment.

A contravention notice dated February 28 which was served on the abandoned building was sighted by our correspondent.

The letter partly read, “Illegal blockage of existing structures without obtaining a development permit. The property owner should remove the structure before legal action.

“Failure to remove the said contravention within 48 hours (two days) from the date of serving the notice, the said contravention shall be demolished after the service of demolition notice.”

On Tuesday afternoon, it was learnt that officials of the enforcement department of LASBCA also visited the site, served a contravention notice, and marked the building for demolition with red spray paint.

The notice dated March 5 and pasted on the building read, “Use of structure without evidence of building permit. No evidence of usage, inspection, certification, or certificate of completion and fitness of habitation from LASBCA.

“If you dispute the above contravention, you are requested to bring all documents in support of your case including your building permit to the undersigned within 48 hours of the service of this notice on you.”

Our correspondent further gathered that officials of the state Ministry of Environment also visited the structure on Wednesday to assess the building and issue a statement in due course.

Following the advice of state officials, the chairman of the landlord association, in a letter dated March 4 and also sighted by our correspondent, petitioned the Divisional Police Officer in the Igando Police Station.

A police source also said that Adepoju was invited to the police station on Wednesday and an investigation of the issue was still ongoing.

However, on Friday, Bammeke informed our correspondent that Adepoju had demolished his church tent.

“After honouring the police’s invitation on Wednesday, the prophet began demolishing his church tent and as of Thursday morning, the structure had been cleared. Adepoju has also informed the chairman that he would evacuate the abandoned building latest Sunday,” he disclosed.

The According gathered that the contravention notice placed on the abandoned building by LASBCA had been removed by an unknown person.

“That notice that was pasted on the building’s wall on Tuesday has been removed. We learned that the person who removed it came with a car around 3 am, walked towards the building, and tore off the notice,” Bammeke added.
