DHQ vows to release bandits leaders’ names, photos

There are indications that the Defence Headquarters is preparing to release the names and pictures of the new set of wanted terrorist and bandit leaders.

Sunday According gathered that this was following the elimination of top terrorists and bandit leaders on the watchlist of the military and the emergence of a new crop of leaders.

The DHQ had in November 2022 declared no fewer than 19 bandit leaders wanted with a bounty of N5m on each of them to encourage Nigerians to volunteer information that could lead to their arrest.

Prominent among those declared wanted were Bello Turji from Fakai village, Zamfara State; Ali  Kachalla, aka Ali Kawaje, from  Kuyambara village in Danaadau Maru LG of Zamfara State; Ado Aliero, from Yankuzo village, in the Tsafe LGA, Zamfara State; Halilu Sububu from Sububu village, in the Maradun  LGA, Zamfara State.

Also on the list were Sani Dangote from  Dumbarum village,  Zurmi LGA of Zamfara State; Leko (Mozoj village, Mutazu LGA, Katsina State); Dogo Nahali (Yar Tsamiyar Jno village, Kankara LGA, Katsina State); Nagona from  Angwan Galadima in the Isa Loa area of Sokoto State;  Monore from Yantumaki village, Dan LGA, Katsina State; Gwaska Dankarami from Shamushele village in the Zuri LGA of Zamfara State; Baleri from Shinkafi LGA, Zamfara State and Mamudu Tainange from  Varanda village in Batsari LGA, Katsina State and others.

A source told our correspondent that the military was planning to release a new list of wanted terrorists.

The source noted that work was ongoing on that.

“The authorities are working on a new list of another wanted terrorist and bandit leaders. It will also contain their pictures. Their lists are being compiled.

“We will urge Nigerians to cooperate with us to enable us to neutralise them as we have done in the past. There should be a bounty on them but I can’t say how much. Don’t worry; it will be released to the public very soon,” the source hinted.

The Director, Defence Media Operations, Maj. Gen. Edward Buba, confirmed that work was ongoing on the new list.

“We are working on the list. It will be out soon,” he said.

Sunday According reports that the military had during several operations across the various theatres of operations killed many terrorist and bandit leaders.

This includes a notorious bandit kingpin identified as Boderi who allegedly orchestrated many high-profile kidnappings, including those of Yauri schoolgirls, Greenfield University, and the Nigerian Defence Academy attacks.

Boderi was said to have been killed alongside another kingpin, Bodejo in February 2024.

Between February 1 and 28, 2024, the troops killed 10 terrorist kingpins.

The terrorist kingpins are Ashiru, Kachambi, Dogon Rakumi, Sulen Nagala, Laushi, Bangis, Alhaji Kabiru, Alhaji Baldu, and Baban Yara.

  In July 2023, a bandit leader in Zamfara, Dogo Gudali, was killed by the troops.

Similarly in January 2023, a bandit kingpin, popularly known as Alhaji Shadari, and some of his gang members were killed in Zamfara State.

Let your name open doors with life you lead–Fubara

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has said that people must reflect on the kind of life they live and make amends if it will not open doors of better opportunities for their children, and others who have encountered them.

Fubara gave the advice at the funeral service of his late mother-in-law, Mrs Adeline Ndalu Jaja, at St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Opobo Town, Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area of the State on Saturday.

This was contained in a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Nelson Chukwudi, and sent to newsmen.

The governor noted that it is very disastrous for parents or leaders to conduct their lives without regard to building a good name that will become valuable currency for their children and those who associate with them to use as a lifeline when in challenges.

Fubara stated, “We are all here this afternoon to say bye-bye to Mama. But I want you to go home with something. And by the grace of God, I don’t think there will be any counter to the point I will make.

“How do we live our lives? Can we live in such a way that when we are no more, our names can open doors for our children? That is what I want you to go home with.

“Mama has lived her life, and it has opened a lot of doors for her biological children. Even those people that are close to Mama, when you mention that you know so and so person, doors will open.

“So, I want everybody here to go back and reflect on it. You must live life so that when you are no more, and our children who are left behind mention our names, those names open doors for them.

“I feel that is the greatest virtue parents should leave for their children. ”

He further said Mama was a good example because she lived a good life, was simple, and promoted justice; and stated that she is already with God.

The governor also declared that his confidence is in God who is the foundation on which his administration is anchored.

He assured that despite the contending challenges, the State and his administration have triumphed.

“I want to thank every one of you this afternoon, more especially our leaders, true leaders of our dear State. Leaders, because one of the reasons why one is called a leader is your experience and age.

“True leaders are here to support us in these trial times. I want to thank all of you, and to say, continue to stand for what is right and what is true, ” Governor Fubara said.

He expressed appreciation to his brother Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, for his show of love by being physically present while he buried his late mother-in-law.

The governor also thanked the true leaders of the State who have stood with him to promote what is right and to protect the interest of the State.

Fubara particularly acknowledged the fatherly role played by the Amayanabo of Opobo Kingdom, King Dandeson Douglas Jaja, and for ensuring that peace continued to prevail in the kingdom.

In his speech, Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State conveyed the condolences of sister States in the region to Governor Fubara, his family and Rivers people for the loss they have suffered.

Diri said it is always sad to have a loved one die, no matter the age, saying ate Mrs Adeline Ndalu Jaja would have lived longer, especially now that her daughter is the First Lady of Rivers State but quickly pointed out that death is a pointer to how temporary life is on earth.

Wife of the Rivers State Governor, Lady Valerie Fubara, read the biography of the late matriarch, which was a testimony of a courageous leader who rose from a humble beginning and disciplined parentage to success, with a career in the Nigeria Police Force that spanned years of active service till her retirement in 1997.

Among stakeholders who joined to pay their last respects include: former governor of Rivers State, Sir Dr. Peter Odili and his wife, Justice Mary Odili, (rtd); State Deputy Governor, Prof Ngozi Odu; Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Simeon Amadi; Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Tammy Danagogo; former National Chairman, PDP, Prince Uche Secondus.

Others are, former Minister of Transport, Dr. Abiye Sekibo; Senators John Azuta Mbata and Lee Maeba; former Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Austin Opara; Dr Sam Sam Jaja; Chief Adokiye Amiesimaka; Chief Emeh Glory Emeh; National and State Assembly members from both Rivers and Bayelsa.

Police arrest two for defiling minors in Lagos

Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested two suspects, Augustine Udeh and Adepoju Moses, for allegedly raping two teenagers in different parts of the state.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday.

Adejobi noted that Udeh was arrested in the Surulere area of the state following a complaint by one Nene Badmus, who told the police that her daughter disclosed that Udeh allegedly raped her after that she had found her daughter by the roadside crying.

Armed with the information provided by Badmus, the police swung into action and arrested the suspect.

Adejobi said, “On the 12th of March 2024, at about 10:30pm, One Nene Badmus ‘f’ reported at the Surulere Divisional Headquarters, Lagos State that on the same day, around 7 pm, she had found her daughter, name withheld, 16yrs, lying down by the roadside crying and complaining of abdominal pain while bleeding.

“She questioned her, and the daughter revealed that one Augustine Udeh ‘m’, 33 years defiled her by having unlawful sexual intercourse with her. A team of detectives from the division took the victim to a medical centre for examination and eventually apprehended the suspect.”

Giving details of Moses’ arrest, Adejobi disclosed that Moses had reported a suspected case of rape to the police on February 23, which prompted the arrest of a suspect.

However, the police upon conducting investigation into the matter, discovered that the complainant was the one who had allegedly perpetuated the act and had instructed the victim, a 13-year-old orphan, to lie against the initial suspect.

“In a similar occurrence, on February 23, 2024, at about 11.50 pm, one Adepoju Ifedayo Moses ‘m’ 42yrs reported at Ifako Gbagada Divisional Headquarters, Lagos that at about 9 pm of the same day, he had sent his younger sister, name withheld, 13 yrs, who is an orphan, on an errand but she was accosted by one man, 38yrs, who lured her into his room and defiled her. A team of detectives from the division moved to the scene, rescued the victim, and arrested the suspect.

“Thorough investigation later revealed that it was the same complainant, Adepoju Ifedayo, who is an uncle to the victim, was the one who had actually defiled the victim earlier that day but instructed the victim to lie against the initial suspect,” the FPRO said.

Adejobi added that after a search of Moses’ house, two locally made pistols and three expended cartridges were recovered.

Stressing the stance of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, Adejobi noted that perpetrators of sexual offences would be made to face the law for their crimes.

“We must educate the populace about consent, respect, and healthy relationships. By promoting a culture of respect, dignity, and equality, we can prevent instances of rape and defilement from occurring.

“Ending rape and defilement requires a concerted effort from all sectors of society. It requires us to speak out against injustice, support and protect survivors, and work towards a future where every individual is free from the threat of sexual harassment and violence,” Adejobi noted.

School feeding programme will be back stronger- FG

The Director of Basic Education, Federal Ministry of Education, Dr Folake Olatunji-David, has assured Nigerians that the school feeding programme suspended by the Federal Government would soon be back.

President Bola Tinubu, on January 12, suspended all programmes of the National Social Investment Programme Agency for six weeks.

The four programmes administered by NSIPA are N- Power Programme, Conditional Cash Transfer Programme, Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme, and Home Grown School Feeding Programme.

A statement by the Director of Information, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Segun Imohiosen, said the suspension was based on the investigation of alleged malfeasance in the management of the agency and its programmes.

The According reports that nine weeks later, the programmes, including the school feeding programmes, have yet to resume.

Speaking during the launch of a non-governmental organisation, Create that Change Development Initiative
on Friday, Olatunji-David stated that the school feeding programme would be back and better.

She added that planning was still ongoing to ensure the effective implementation of the programme.

Olatunji-David said, “We all know that we have the homegrown program that is being put on hold for now. It is coming back stronger and better. Before now, it only covers a segment of primary school. The president has said it will be for basic education in its entirety.

“We are planning. We don’t just want to come out without planning to ensure that as soon as we receive the directives, proper implementation is done. If it is the whole of primary school or basic education, it will be done properly. We await further directives on this.”

She commended the organisation, adding that the programme lined up by the NGO would help advance the well-being and development of children, adolescents, and the society at large.

Speaking, the founder of the NGO, Mrs Sharon Ayeni, stated that she relocated to Nigeria to establish the organisation to address pressing challenges and uplift those in need in Nigeria.

Ayeni said, “So I’m here in Nigeria with a mandate to help turn around Nigeria to get s back on track towards eradicating poverty, supporting those in need, and making a real difference in the lives of children and the youth. There is a lot of work to be done if Nigeria intends to operate and compete at the same level as other countries.

“The vision CCDI has is big. Our goal is to take our flagship programme Enhancing Nutrition, Exercise and Reading Initiative to every state in the federation, we call this the ENERI effect! Our next target is to implement ENERI in three new schools, and we also have other initiatives in the pipeline, including:
Build Her Initiative; Toilet Angels Initiative and Teacher-to-Teacher Mentoring Initiative. “

PDP demands release of abducted Edo chairman, others

The Peoples Democratic Party has demanded the immediate and unconditional release of the chairman of its Edo State Chapter, Dr. Tony Aziegbemi.

According to reports, Aziegbemi was abducted by a group of armed individuals near his home in Benin City, the capital of Edo State on Friday.

He was reportedly trailed by his abductors, who drove two Toyota Corolla cars and intercepted his vehicle along Odaro Street, near his residence, around 11 pm.

The PDP, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, on Saturday, raised concerns regarding the abduction of Aziegbemi, linking it to the inability of the All Progressives Congress-controlled Federal Government to uphold the security and welfare of Nigerians as required by Section 14 (2)(b) of the Constitution.

The statement read in part, “Our party is distressed by the alarming spate of abduction of helpless Nigerians in various parts of the country, particularly the recent kidnap of about 286 school children in Kaduna State and others in Sokoto State, who are still being held in horrifying and traumatising conditions in their abductor’s den.

“It is heartrending that the APC administration continues to give false assurances while Nigerians are left at the mercy of kidnappers, bandits, terrorists, and marauders without corresponding concrete effort to check the ugly occurrences.

“Our party calls on the Federal Government to end its laidback attitude to security by immediately rejigging our national security architecture, especially in the areas of intelligence gathering, security command, and control coordination in a manner that not only proactively ensures the safety of citizens, but also guarantees rapid respond and effective rescue operations.

“The PDP commends our gallant security personnel in their patriotic effort to secure our nation and urges them not to relent despite the daunting challenges.”

The party called upon the security agencies to ensure the liberation of Aziegbemi and all other Nigerians currently being held captive in the camps of kidnappers across different regions of the nation.

It added, “The party also commends the efforts of the Edo State Governor, Governor Godwin Obaseki, particularly in the deployment of effective security frameworks and structures which the security agencies should leverage on to further guarantee the safety of citizens in Edo State and other parts of the country.

“While calling on Nigerians to be prayerful, alert and continue to support our security agencies, the PDP charges the security high command to take urgent steps to secure the release of Dr. Aziegbemi and all other Nigerians trapped in abductors’ camps in various parts of the country.”

Police in standoff with suspect in two fatal US shootings

Three people were killed by gunfire in two shootings in a Philadelphia suburb Saturday and the suspect fled and remains barricaded in a house in Trenton, New Jersey, the police and local authorities reported.

They said the suspect – identified as 26-year-old Andre Gordon, who was believed to be homeless – had stolen a vehicle before killing two people in a home in the Falls Township city of Levittown. The victims were his 52-year-old stepmother and his 13-year-old sister.

Three people in the house managed to hide “as he went through the house searching for them,” Bucks County district attorney Jennifer Schorn told reporters.

The suspect then drove to another nearby residence where he shot and killed a woman with whom he has two children before using his rifle butt to bludgeon the woman’s mother.

He then went to the parking lot of a nearby discount store where he carjacked a Honda utility vehicle from a 44-year-old man before fleeing. The man was not injured, according to Falls Township Sheriff Nelson Whitney.

The suspect then drove across the state line to nearby Trenton, New Jersey, where he remains holed up in a house, now surrounded by police officers, who were attempting to make contact with him.

People who had been in the house at the time “have been successfully evacuated with no injuries,” said Detective Lieutenant Lisette Rios with the Trenton police department.

Whitney said the suspect was believed to be armed with an AR-15-style assault rifle and police described him as “extremely dangerous.”

Because the suspect crossed state lines, federal authorities, including the FBI, are aiding in the matter, Whitney added.

Residents in the area of the first shootings were urged to shelter in place, an order lifted after three hours.

In December 2023, an American teenager was sentenced to life in prison for shooting dead four students at his Michigan high school, with the case drawing additional attention because his parents are also facing charges.

Bernardo Silva scored twice as Manchester City beat Newcastle 2-0 to reach the FA Cup semi-finals on Saturday, while Coventry struck twice in stoppage time to stun Wolves 3-2.

Holders City remain on course to repeat their treble triumph of the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup last season as Pep Guardiola’s men stretched their unbeaten run in all competitions to 22 games.

Fortune favoured the English champions, though, as twice Silva’s shots took deflections to wrong-foot Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.

The Portuguese international opened the scoring on 13 minutes when his effort looped in off Dan Burn.

Silva’s second deflected off Sven Botman, but Dubravka should still have done better as the ball trickled underneath him.

At the other end, City’s number one goalkeeper Ederson was not missed as Stefan Ortega produced a brilliant save to deny Alexander Isak pulling a goal back for Newcastle.

Dubravka made amends for his earlier error with fine saves from Jeremy Doku on either side of half-time to keep the score down.

But it was too little, too late for Newcastle’s hopes of silverware this season as the Magpies remain without a major trophy since 1969.

– Coventry’s rise under Robins

By contrast, Coventry reached their first semi-final since they won the competition for the only time in 1987 in a five-goal thriller at Molineux.

“I apologise to him, I don’t show emotion very often but that is what the FA Cup does to you,” said Robins.

A founder member of the Premier League, Coventry sank from the top down to the fourth tier of English football as recently as the 2017/18 season.

But they have achieved two promotions under Robins and narrowly missed out on a return to the Premier League last season, losing the Championship playoff final to Luton on penalties.

Wembley awaits once more in the last four, but Robins is realistic of his side’s chances of glory with the likes of City or Liverpool potentially waiting in the semis.

“We have got a small chance. We are going to Wembley and we are going to enjoy that game,” added Robins.

“I don’t want to go there and just make the numbers up. We are not stupid, we know the levels go up all of the time.”

Spurs’ top four bid rocked by Fulham, Luton draw with Forest

Tottenham wasted a chance to move into the Premier League’s top four as they slumped to a shock 3-0 defeat at Fulham, while Luton salvaged a crucial 1-1 draw with relegation rivals Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

Ange Postecoglou’s side would have climbed above Aston Villa into fourth place with a win, but instead they handed the initiative back to their top-four rivals.

Fifth-placed Tottenham were punished for a sloppy performance as the in-form Rodrigo Muniz netted twice either side of Sasa Lukic’s first goal for Fulham.

A 4-0 win at Villa last weekend was expected to act as Tottenham’s springboard to finish above Unai Emery’s team in the battle to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Instead, the north Londoners crashed to a first league defeat at Craven Cottage since 2008 and failed to score for the first time in 40 games.

They sit two points behind Villa, who can extend that lead to five if they win at West Ham on Sunday.

With Micky van de Ven sidelined by a hamstring injury, Radu Dragusin made his first Tottenham start.

Worryingly for Postecoglou, Romania centre-back Dragusin, signed from Genoa in January, was often exposed in a rocky display.

Fulham took the lead in the 42nd minute when Muniz cleverly drifted away from Dragusin as the Brazilian forward found space to meet Antonee Robinson’s low cross with a clinical finish from 10 yards.

Tottenham’s defensive deficiencies were exposed again four minutes after half-time.

Forest, beaten in their previous three games, took the lead through Chris Wood’s 34th minute strike.

Third-bottom Luton, who blew a three-goal lead in Wednesday’s disastrous 4-3 defeat at Bournemouth, are without a win in their last nine games in all competitions.

They lie three points behind fourth-bottom Forest and boss Rob Edwards said: “You get knocked down on Wednesday and it was very tough for us all. We performed really well today in difficult circumstances.

“This group just keep going. We’ve got to fight. We’ve had to do that for a long time.”

Forest boss Nuno Espirito Santo added: “We did enough to win it with the chances we had and the way we played.”

At Turf Moor, second-bottom Burnley kept alive their faint survival hopes with a 2-1 victory against Brentford.

Vincent Kompany’s side took the lead in the 10th minute when Vitinho sprinted onto Josh Cullen’s pass and was about to shoot when he was pulled down by Sergio Reguilon.

The Spanish defender was shown the earliest red card in the Premier League this season, after a VAR check, and Jacob Bruun Larsen stepped up to convert the spot-kick.

David Datro Fofana, on loan from Chelsea, struck in the 62nd minute with a composed finish into the far corner.

Kristoffer Ajer got one back in the 83rd minute with a diving header from Bryan Mbeumo’s cross, but the Clarets held on for their first league win in 11 games.

They are now eight points from safety with nine games left.

“It had been coming. On another day we could have scored more,” Kompany said.

Brentford have won only three of their past 18 league games and sit just four points above the relegation zone.

Kane breaks 60-year record as Musiala shines

Harry Kane broke a 60-year record for most goals in a debut season while Jamal Musiala scored twice as Bayern Munich won 5-2 at Darmstadt on Saturday.

With 31 goals in 26 league games since arriving from Spurs in the summer, Kane overtook German legend Uwe Seeler, who scored 30 goals for Hamburg in 1963-64.

Musiala also had an assist in the win, which keeps Bayern’s slim hopes of defending the Bundesliga title alive, moving them seven points behind Bayer Leverkusen, who play at Freiburg on Sunday.

“We are staying in it. We worked hard to get ourselves some opportunities and we took them,” said Bayern captain Manuel Neuer, praising “difference makers like Jamal on the pitch.”

The goalkeeper was however disappointed his side had conceded two goals against last-placed Darmstadt, saying: “We all need to work on it.”

Darmstadt stunned Bayern after 28 minutes, Tim Skarke taking advantage of some sleepy defending by Eric Dier to score and give the home side hope of an incredible upset against the German champions.

In Saturday’s late game, Stuttgart continued their remarkable turnaround this season, Serhou Guirassy scoring again in a 3-0 win over neighbours Hoffenheim.

Third from bottom last season and needing to win a play-off to stay in the first division, third-placed Stuttgart have rocketed up the table this year and now have one hand on a top four spot and a return to the Champions League.

Enzo Millot’s 16th-minute goal broke Hoffenheim’s resistance and Guirassy scored just before half-time, his 22nd league goal of the season after just 20 games.

Jamie Leweling scored to seal the win with 20 minutes remaining to seal Stuttgart’s first win in Hoffenheim for over a decade.

In the German capital, Union Berlin beat Werder Bremen 2-1 thanks to a commanding performance from US midfielder Brenden Aaronson, on loan from Leeds.

Aaronson, who was surprisingly left out of the US squad this week, had a hand in two goals in three second-half minutes to give Union the upper hand.

The 23-year-old laid on Yorbe Vertessen’s 50th-minute goal, before creating and scoring one of his own with some superb dribbling shortly after.

Ekiti diaspora group donates equipment to hospital

A diaspora group, Egbe Omo Otun Abroad, has said that its intervention in the General Hospital, Otun Ekiti in the Moba Local Government area of Ekiti State, is to address equipment deficit so that their people at home can enjoy good healthcare services.

The group’s president, Alhaji Tiamiyu Salau, who said the intervention followed a critical shortage of basic amenities at the general hospital, said, “Considering the impact of such on members of the community seeking medical care, we knew immediate action was necessary”.

Salau, represented by the immediate past president, Dr Abiodun Orisasona, during the presentation of the items to the hospital at Otun Ekiti on Friday, said “The donation will significantly improve the patients’ experience”.

The items included 20 ultra-modern single crank beds, designed for optimal patients’ comfort and ease of care, 20 matching bedside cabinets providing essential storage and convenience and 20 high-quality mattresses and pillows, ensuring proper support and rest for patients.

Others are 105 sets of crisp bed sheets, fostering an environment of dignity and care, two units of Sphygmomanometers for blood pressure monitoring, two units of baby weight machines for accurate weight measurement and five units of baby cribs with 20 sets of bedsheets, providing a safe and comfortable space for our children.

Salau, who recalled that the group donated some beds to the facility in 1999, urged the hospital management and patients to make good use of the materials “to enable individuals seeking medical attention at the hospital to receive it with comfort and dignity”.

The Oore of Otun, Oba Adekunle Adeagbo, expressed delight at the gesture of the Egbe Omo Otun Abroad for giving back to their town, saying, “This is an act of patriotism that will have long-lasting impacts on our community and as well improve the health care standard of the people”.

The Permanent Secretary, of Ekiti State Hospitals Management Board, Dr Olasunkanmi Alabi, represented by the Director of Medical Services, Dr Moses Afuye, lauded the group for the kindness, restated commitment to ensure that medical facilities were in good condition for the health benefit of patients.

The Chairman, of Moba Local Government, Mr Bamidele Fadugba and the Iyaloja of Otun-Ekiti, Chief Felicia Onifade, expressed optimism that the gesture would have a positive effect on the lives of the residents.
