Trump Confirms Monday Meeting to Discuss Iran Nuclear Issue

0

U.S. President Donald Trump has confirmed that talks with Iran will begin Monday as efforts continue to end the conflict and reopen the Strait of Hormuz but he declined to set a deadline for reaching an agreement.

Trump, who returned to Washington Sunday, told reporters that talks would begin Monday afternoon but did not specify where or who would participate. “Would I like to do a deal? When asked whether Iran had a deadline for reaching an agreement, he said, I’m not trying to kill people, because people die. A lot of people die and we don’t want that.”

Earlier, Trump had disclosed on Truth Social that Iran and other Middle Eastern nations asked for more time to reach a deal that would result in “the Immediate, Complete and Total” reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and “an end to Iran’s nuclear threat,” while declaring that Tehran must “rapidly make a DEAL.”

The talks follow months of rising tensions following the U.S.-Israeli military campaign against Iran. Tehran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz, through which about 20% of global oil and liquefied natural gas passes, has driven up energy prices, although oil prices fell by more than 4% in early trading on Monday amid renewed hopes for diplomacy.

Meanwhile, Iran stepped up its diplomatic activity, with Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi holding meetings with Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. Iranian officials also confirmed talks with Oman on a new shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz are nearing completion, stressing the negotiations are “no link to the Strait of Hormuz being opened or closed. That’s a separate discussion.

Even with the diplomatic efforts, Israel stuck to its hardline position. Energy Minister Eli Cohen warned: “With or without an agreement, and regardless of any outside commitments, if Iran tries to renew its nuclear program or advance its ballistic missile industries, we will be there. We will act, and we will strike.”

Last week, Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met in Washington to discuss diplomatic, economic and military options to curb Iran’s nuclear programme, while Tehran continues to deny pursuing nuclear weapons.

Timipre Sylva Accused of Using NDDC Resources, Bank Loans to Back Failed Coup Bid

A new probe report has indicted a former governor of Bayelsa State and ex-Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, for helping to raise billions of naira for the failed 2025 plan to overthrow President Bola Tinubu.

Premium Times reports the claims are contained in more than 7,400 pages of investigation documents assembled for the prosecution of military officers and civilians accused of participating in the alleged coup.

Among the documents analyzed are bank statements, statements of suspects, private messages, investigative reports and notes purportedly written by the suspected mastermind of the plot, Col. Mohammed Ma’aji.

Sylva has not been convicted of any of the allegations made against him in court. The former minister had earlier denied any involvement, saying reports linking him to the plot were baseless.

Sylva and his cohorts were suspected to have pooled over ₦5bn in an account to sponsor the planned overthrow of the government, the report of the investigation said.

The report alleged that Sylva had approved the transfer of ₦785m for the execution of the plot, while trying to distance himself from public association with it.

The money was allegedly sent through Purple Waves Limited, an Abuja-based company engaged in construction, real estate and land transactions.

It was reported that the company had transferred the money to Bureau de Change operators, who then gave the cash to persons assigned roles in the alleged conspiracy on the instructions of Ma’aji.

The plot reportedly collapsed after the arrest of Ma’aji on September 29, 2025.

The report quoted records from the Corporate Affairs Commission which showed that Purple Waves Limited was incorporated on March 3rd, 2009.

According to investigators, Sylva’s associates were named as directors Inowei Ingoikputu and Abang Ogar.

Some of the Abuja properties used as collateral for loans secured by the company belonged to Sylva or people close to him, the report said.

“On July 23, 2025, Sylva requested the company’s directors to open a SunTrust Bank account for the receipt and disbursement of funds relating to the proposed coup,” the report said.

The company later appointed Ingoikputu, Isaac Ekpoki and John Ifeanyi Ebokpo as signatories to the account.

The investigators identified the single largest inflow as the purported payment of ₦5.8bn by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDC) to Purple Waves for a coastal protection project.

It was called the Niger Delta Emergency Coastal Protection, Phase One project and it involved land reclamation and shoreline protection.

However the report did not mention when the contract was awarded, the total value, the degree of execution or if the payment was the full contract sum.

It also did not say whether the NDDC had been contacted for confirmation of payment or status of the project.

However, the investigators alleged that Sylva and Ma’aji conspired to open the account and moved the sum of ₦5.816bn into the account for the execution of the alleged coup.

The report further alleged that Purple Waves got loans of about ₦2.9bn from SunTrust Bank in September, 2025.

The investigators said the money was deposited into the company’s account on September 17, the money was used in part to fund activities related to the alleged plot.

It was gathered that another loan of ₦1.2bn was also credited to the same account on the same day. Yobygo Nigeria Limited also transferred another ₦1.07bn on September 18.

The report claimed that Purple Waves used Yobygo to facilitate additional funding on its behalf.

Three properties in Abuja, with an aggregate market value of ₦10.9bn, were allegedly used as collateral for a ₦2.4bn loan.

They were identified as Houses 8A and 8B on Thaba Tseka Street, Wuse 2 and Plot 4577 in Guzape District.

Investigators said the properties are “most likely” linked to Sylva or an associate.

The investigators said they traced transactions running into over ₦8.2bn through the Purple Waves accounts, excluding foreign exchange transactions with Bureau de Change operators.

According to them, the money was paid into the accounts as loans or payments related to the NDDC project.

The report said that at the time its management is said to have started to release money on the directives of Sylva, Purple Waves had a balance of about N5.18bn.

Ma’aji was alleged to have been moved ₦785m in total on different occasions through firms linked to a BDC operator, Sani Abdullahi.

The BDC firms identified were Express Link, ASA Multipurpose Concept and Luji Trade and Investment Limited.

Investigators have claimed that SunTrust Bank was presented with invoices indicating that the transfers were for fuel, equipment operators, marine spare parts, rental of dredgers and site-clearing work linked to the NDDC project.

But the BDC operator denied knowing about the invoices.

The report also alleged that a SunTrust Bank relationship manager said he had never met the signatories to the Purple Waves account despite the bank disbursing ₦2.4bn to the company.

Investigators described the transactions as a case of “legitimate funds used to sponsor illegitimate activities.”

The report cited various dates for the alleged coup including September 27, October 1 and October 4, 2025.

No end date was said to have been fixed before Ma’aji’s arrest.

Investigators later arrested military officers, a police officer, clerics and civilians suspected of being involved in the plot or of failing to report it.

As of 20 October 2025, the Purple Waves current account had a balance of ₦4.3bn while another account linked to an advance payment guarantee had a balance of ₦2.9bn.

The report said SunTrust Bank was directed to place the account with ₦4.3bn on a Post-No-Debit restriction.

It did not state what was done with the account with a balance of ₦2.9bn.

The operator of the BDC was also allegedly asked to remit ₦306.6m which was unspent into the account of the Nigerian Army Corps of Military Police.

Sylva, whom investigators believe is outside Nigeria, denied involvement in the alleged coup when the claims first surfaced in October 2025.

He dismissed the allegations as rumours and denied claims that he had financed any attempt to overthrow the government.

Meanwhile in Abuja, five of his aides are said to be facing charges for hiding information about his whereabouts.

‘Relying On Outdated Data’ – Presidency Fires Back At Atiku

0

The Presidency has responded to criticism of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic policies by former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar saying the reforms of the administration are starting to yield positive results after initial challenges.

The Presidency also dismissed claims of fiscal recklessness, excessive borrowing and mismanagement of public finances, describing Atiku’s claims as misleading and based on outdated economic data.

The government’s position was contained in a statement on Saturday, titled, “Facts, Not Fear: A Point-by-Point Response to Atiku Abubakar on Nigeria’s Reform Journey” by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

Onanuga accused the former vice-president of relying on economic indices of 2024 without taking into account the developments recorded since then.

“Politics is powered by disagreement. Democracy requires it. But he said disagreements must be based on facts, not frozen images of history.”

“The public is entitled to context when yesterday’s data is presented as today’s reality.

He said economies are in a constant state of evolution and reforms should be evaluated based on the conditions at the end of their implementation and not at the beginning.

“The first observation may be chronological. It is interesting that in the middle of 2026 the main economic argument of the opposition is still built on the developments of the 2024 fiscal year. Economies evolve. Reforms are processes, not events,” he said.

The presidential spokesman said the Tinubu administration’s foreign exchange reforms have resulted in improvement in the country’s economy.

He said the country’s dollar-denominated Gross Domestic Product rose from about $253 billion after the exchange-rate adjustment to approximately $377 billion, while the naira value of the economy increased from about ₦314 trillion in 2024 to around ₦530 trillion.

In reaction to Atiku’s concern over the country’s debt burden, the Presidency argued that the sustainability of debt was more important than the total amount borrowed.

“There is a need to ask a wider question on Nigeria’s debt: What is Nigeria’s capacity to service her debt? For debt in itself is not the measure of fiscal health,” Onanuga said.

Nigeria’s debt-to-GDP ratio was still around 40 per cent, he said, a relatively low figure compared to many African and developed economies.

The presidency also defended removal of fuel subsidy, saying the policy had drastically increased allocations to states and local governments.

Subnational governments had been able to spend more on infrastructure, education, healthcare and other development projects thanks to the extra revenue, Onanuga said.

“The visible effect of subsidy removal is that revenues accruing to states and local governments through the Federation Account have improved significantly,” he said.

The Presidency said claims that the government had increased tax burdens on Nigerians on tax reforms are false.

“The essence of the tax reforms is not only to increase collection, but to build a better and broader tax system,” Onanuga said.

He said the reforms were intended to reduce the tax burden on low-income earners and small businesses, while raising compliance among the wealthy and profitable companies.

The Presidency also dismissed Atiku’s claim that the Federal Government had benefitted from an alleged oil windfall of N7.98 trillion.

Onanuga said the calculation did not consider the cost of production, the share of crude apportioned to oil companies and existing crude sales agreements.

“There is no windfall of N7.98 trillion,” he said.

“The common mistake that a lot of analysts make is multiplying the oil price times the daily crude production volume to arrive at revenue to the government.”

Crude-backed loan obligations and lower-than-expected production have meant that favourable global oil prices have not translated into higher revenue for government, he said.

The Presidency said the administration also made progress in healthcare, education and social intervention programmes, including the upgrade of over 3,000 primary healthcare centres, retraining of more than 78,000 frontline health workers and disbursement of over N303 billion through the Nigerian Education Loan Fund to more than 1.64 million students across 300 tertiary institutions.

Onanuga said the reforms were creating a foundation for long-term economic stability, despite short-term hardships.

History doesn’t often remember governments for the popularity of their decisions in the moment. “It remembers if those decisions ultimately built up or tore down the nation,” he said.

The economy, he said, was yet to get to the destination it was heading to but the Tinubu administration would continue to implement reforms to expand opportunities, strengthen institutions and improve the living standards of Nigerians.

Kwara APC Governorship Candidate Confident of Victory in 2027 Elections

The governorship candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Danladi Salihu has expressed confidence that the party will win the 2027 general elections at all levels.

He urged opposition members and aggrieved politicians to return to the ruling party ahead of expected elections.

Danladi made the call during a state-wide “thank you” tour he led with other APC candidates to appreciate party members and supporters after the party’s primary elections, it was reported.

The visit started with visits to Ekiti and Oke Ero Local Government Areas where the APC delegation paid a courtesy visit to the traditional rulers, party leaders and supporters.

The delegation was led by the state APC Chairman, Prince Sunday Fagbemi, other party chieftains, and various support groups.

Danladi, who spoke to APC supporters at a well-attended town hall meeting in Ekiti, thanked members of the party for their support during the primary elections and urged them to continue with the support ahead of the 2027 polls.

“We have come to appreciate what you did during the party primaries and also to seek your continuous support for our candidates, from our presidential candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the State House of Assembly,” he said.

The APC candidate said the huge turnout for the event, despite the short notice given to supporters, showed the confidence and support the people had for the party.

He also assured that the next APC administration would build on the achievements of the Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq led administration, especially in infrastructure, human capital development, inclusive governance and support for traditional institutions.

‘APC To Win 2027 Elections From Top To The Grassroots’
Danladi used the Yoruba word ‘Efokanbale’, meaning ‘ Be assured ‘, that the party will win the forthcoming elections, appealing to aggrieved politicians and members of the opposition to return to the APC.

“‘Efokanbale. APC is taking Kwara from bottom to top in the 2027 elections. Let’s talk to our neighbors and those who have missed the road to come back to the winning team.

“There’s no sign of the train moving yet. “ there is still room on the train for them to be taken along ” he said.

Speaking during the visit, the APC State Chairman, Fagbemi, said there was no genuine reason why anyone should be against Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, whom he described as a leader that has positively impacted the state.

“There is no one that has any genuine reason to hate Governor AbdulRahman because there is no one he has not done something for.

When the time comes we will name names. “Not a single ward in Ekiti has not felt the impact of the Governor’s intervention.”

He said the governor, who is the APC senatorial candidate for Kwara Central, sent the delegation himself to the communities, though he did not go on the tour.

He said the administration executed the take-off of the Kwara State University campus in Osi, reconstruction of Osi-Obbo Aiyegunle road and the return of the House of Representatives seat to the Ekiti axis.

He appealed to the people to reciprocate the efforts of the government by voting massively for the APC candidates at the 2027 elections.

The APC delegation was received on the tour by the Olosi of Osi and Chairman, Ekiti Traditional Council, Oba Saliu Abdulkareem Adasofegbe and the Alofa of Ilofa and Chairman, Oke Ero Traditional Council, Oba Samuel Niyi Dada.

Other traditional rulers from the two local government areas also attended the meetings and said prayers and gave royal blessings to the candidates.

The monarchs praised the Governor AbdulRazaq for what they called phenomenal development across Kwara State in the past seven years.

They prayed for the APC candidates to emerge victorious in the 2027 polls.

Traditional rulers, however, appealed to political candidates not to forget traditional institutions after being elected.

The Olosi appealed to the candidates to pay more attention to the welfare of the traditional rulers.

When you are elected, don’t forget the traditional rulers. “Care for us because some of us are living…,” the monarch said.

The APC senatorial candidate for Kwara South, Prince Lekan Adewoye, praised the people of Ekiti and Oke Ero for their continued support for the party.

Adewoye promised to prioritize the needs and development of the senatorial district should he be elected in 2027.

Hon. Abolarin Ganiyu Gabriel, member representing Ekiti Constituency in the Kwara State House of Assembly also appealed to the residents to sustain their support for the APC.

In separate remarks, Elder Dele Aina and Engr Ogunmola described Ekiti as a stronghold of the APC and promised to continue supporting all the party’s candidates in the 2027 general elections.

Garba Shehu, the immediate Senior Special Assistant to the late President Muhammadu Buhari, has visited the Vice Presidential Candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rotimi Amaechi.

This was disclosed by Garba Shehu in a post on his social media handle on Sunday.

He said he visited the former Director-General of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council over the death of his mother.

Garba Shehu tweeted: “Today, I paid a condolence visit to the man who led us in winning the 2015 and 2019 general elections as DG, HE Rotimi Amaechi, following the demise of his mother, Mrs Mary Amaechi who passed away at the age of 89. – Garba Shehu pic.twitter.com/7Af3l8w6bL

“God grant him strength to take the loss.”

Remember that Amaechi, a former Governor of Rivers State and Minister of Transportation, had lost his mother, Mary Amaechi, who died at the age of 89.

The family announced her death in a statement issued by the Rotimi Amaechi Media Office, saying the matriarch died peacefully.

The family described the late Mary Amaechi as a God-fearing woman, a leader of the society who dedicated her life to promoting peace, unity and selfless service.

“The late Mrs Mary Amaechi was a loving matriarch who kept her family together in love, peace and unity. She was a leader in the community of women and a leader in Christianity, the statement said, noting her firm and resolute faith in God.

The family said the woman was well-loved in her community and beyond for her compassion, generosity and constant support for others.

The statement continued: “She was loved and highly respected in her community and will be remembered for her warmth, kindness and unwavering support for those around her and beyond.”

The family also thanked people for the outpouring of sympathy and condolences following her death.

ECOWAS Peace Mission Receives 86 Nigerian Troops in Guinea-Bissau

The Nigerian Army has deployed 86 personnel to the ECOWAS Stabilisation Support Mission in Guinea-Bissau as part of Nigeria’s continued contribution to peace and security operations in the region.

It was reported that Nigerian Company 5” mission code troops left the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, aboard a Nigerian Air Force C-130 Hercules aircraft.

In a statement on Saturday on its official social media platforms, the Army said the personnel have arrived safely in Guinea-Bissau and have started their assignment under the mandate of the Economic Community of West African States.

Before their departure from the Nigerian Army Peacekeeping Forward Operating Base in Abuja, the Chief of Operations, Maj. Gen. Mayirenso Saraso, urged the troops to exhibit professionalism, discipline and operational excellence throughout the mission.

Saraso, represented by the Director of Peace Support Operations, Brig. Gen. M.M. Idris, charged them to be worthy representatives of the Nigerian Army, the Armed Forces of Nigeria and the country.

He also instructed the personnel to respect the laws and customs of Guinea-Bissau in their duties.

The troops were cautioned against sexual exploitation and abuse, substance abuse, indiscipline and irresponsible use of social media.

The Army said the deployment was a manifestation of Nigeria’s continued commitment to regional stability and its leading role in the ECOWAS peace support operations.

It said Nigeria remains a leading contributor to regional and international peace-keeping operations in Africa, drawing on decades of experience under the ECOWAS, African Union and the United Nations.

The statement said the latest deployment also underscored Nigeria’s strategic role in conflict prevention, peacebuilding and post-conflict stabilisation across the continent.

The ECOWAS Stabilisation Support Mission in Guinea-Bissau was created to support security sector reforms and to ensure political stability after years of political crises and military interventions.

The mission followed the ECOWAS Mission in Guinea-Bissau, sent after the 2012 coup in that country.

It is part of the regional bloc’s efforts to protect the constitutional order and to ensure that the instability in Guinea-Bissau does not spiral into a wider security threat.

Nigeria has in the past provided troops, logistics and military leadership to peacekeeping missions in Liberia, Sierra Leone, The Gambia and Guinea Bissau.

Coalition Advocates Unified Presidential Candidate to Strengthen Opposition

0

A coalition of 100 prominent Nigerians under the banner of the G-100 has said only a united opposition can avert what it described as the gradual erosion of Nigeria’s democracy and the continued dominance of the ruling All Progressives Congress.

In an open letter of seven pages titled, “The doctrine of a necessary democratic Opposition,” dated August 2, 2026, the group called on key opposition figures, including the African Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar; the Nigeria Democratic Congress candidate, Peter Obi; former Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi and former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and other political leaders to immediately set aside personal ambitions and negotiate the emergence of a single presidential candidate for the 2027 election.

In a letter signed by former APC National Vice Chairman (North-West), Salihu Lukman, former member, House of Representatives, Nnenna Ukeje, ex- Kogi State Deputy Governor Simon Achuba, Professor Anthony Kila and 96 other signatories, it was argued that Nigeria’s democratic future depends on presenting Nigerians with a credible and united alternative to the current administration.

The greatest threat to Nigeria, according to the group, is not just economic hardship but the gradual weakening of democratic institutions by a fractured opposition and the increasing concentration of political power.

There are times in the life of a nation when neutrality is an assent, silence, an accomplice to decline. “We have entered a season like this in Nigeria,” the letter partly read.

The group said the country’s problems go beyond inflation, unemployment and poverty and insisted the deeper crisis is a political system that rewards loyalty over competence and patronage over public service.

We have created a political order that too often rewards loyalty over merit, patronage over service, and power over accountability. “It is no wonder that such a system produces poverty and misery. A nation cannot reap prosperity from institutions that breed poverty and deprivation,” it said.

The G-100 warned that while the ruling APC continues to consolidate power, opposition parties have become distracted by internal rivalries rather than concentrating on creating a viable electoral alternative.

“The ruling party grows stronger, not only because of its own organisation, but because it has given up internal dissent to the authority of the executive.

“Meanwhile, those given the charge of providing Nigerians with an alternative have been fractured by ambition rather than united by purpose. As the executive consolidates power, the opposition fragments,” it lamented.

The coalition stressed that democracy cannot exist without a credible opposition that can take over the government in elections peacefully.

It called this principle the “Doctrine of a necessary democratic opposition.”

“The liberty of a people depends not only upon the existence of government, but upon the certainty that government may be peacefully challenged, corrected and, when necessary, replaced,” the letter further read. A government that fears no opposition soon forgets the people.” “An opposition that cannot oppose soon forgets why.”

The group said it would hold a National Council of Opposition Leaders within the next two weeks where top opposition politicians including Atiku, Obi, Kwankwaso, Amaechi, Makinde and ex-Senate President David Mark, as well as former Osun State governor, Rauf Aregbesola, among others, would be expected to negotiate a common political strategy and commit to producing a single presidential flag bearer.

“We therefore call on the leaders of the opposition to come together, to negotiate in good faith how the 2027 election shall be prosecuted as a united front.

“Let that negotiation be anchored on the principles of building a cohesive single opposition candidate and a common purpose, a common programme, a common strategy and a common resolve to save Nigeria,” the group said

The coalition cautioned that opposition leaders who continue to pursue their own presidential ambitions risk handing President Bola Tinubu a second term.

“Nigeria cannot be rescued by opposition leaders marching separately to the same defeat. Personal ambition must yield to national necessity, for a people broken at the moment of decision will continue to be ruled by those who profit from that division,” it contended.

The G-100 said the proposed national meeting would seek to extract from opposition leaders what it described as “a solemn covenant” to place national interest above personal political aspirations.

It revealed that the gathering would reaffirm the principles contained in the Ibadan Declaration of April 2026 as the basis for negotiating a consensus presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 polls.

Israeli Air Raids Damage Hospital Warehouses in Gaza

Two Palestinians were killed by Israeli air strikes that destroyed two medicine warehouses near a hospital in Gaza on Saturday.

Palestinian health officials said two people were killed in an air strike in the Sheikh Radwan neighborhood of Gaza City. The Israeli military said it had targeted Hamas militants but did not elaborate.

Two warehouses storing medical supplies for Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah were destroyed in a separate strike, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.

Hours later, the Israeli military said it had targeted a Hamas hideout near the hospital, where it was said weapons were being stored. It said it also targeted other sites it claimed were used by Hamas to store weapons. The military said the Shin Bet intelligence agency ordered the operation, but provided no evidence to back up its claims.

The Health Ministry said the strike damaged two more medicine warehouses and the hospital’s outpatient clinic. No injuries were reported immediately.

The blast destroyed warehouses that contained critical medical supplies, including dialysis materials for kidney patients, gauze and other routine treatment and wound care items, hospital officials said.

Witnesses say the Israeli military issued an evacuation warning before the strike in Deir al-Balah.

International humanitarian law protects hospitals and other civilian facilities as long as they are not used for military purposes. Israel has accused Hamas of operating from hospitals and other civilian sites, an accusation Hamas has repeatedly denied.

The latest strikes came amid uncertainty over a reported agreement on Hamas’ disarmament in exchange for efforts to end the Gaza war.

President Donald Trump said this week that Hamas had agreed to lay down its weapons, but there has been no public comment from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the proposal.

Meanwhile, Israel’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir rejected the reported agreement, insisting that military operations against Hamas should continue.

Egypt Secures Additional IMF Funding

0

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has concluded two reviews of its financing arrangements with Egypt, paving the way for the North African country to access an additional $1.8 billion in funding to support its economic reform program.

Prime Minister of Egypt Mostafa Madbouly welcomed the decision, saying it was a renewed vote of confidence in the government’s efforts to stabilise the economy and implement key reforms.

Madbouly said the successful reviews demonstrate the IMF’s endorsement of Egypt’s policy measures, including exchange rate flexibility, energy price reforms, and efforts to bolster fiscal discipline.

The extra financing would help to continue reforms aimed at increasing investor confidence, dealing with fiscal challenges and encouraging economic recovery, he said.

Egypt is expected to receive about $1.5 billion under the IMF’s 48-month loan programme after the completion of the seventh review.

The country will also benefit from some $272 million under the IMF’s Resilience and Sustainability Facility.

In 2022 Egypt signed a $3 billion loan deal with the IMF, which was increased to $8 billion in 2024 as the country struggled with high inflation and a shortage of foreign currency.

Egypt’s economy had held up well despite spillover effects from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, the IMF said, noting that the country had entered the period from a stronger macroeconomic position.

But the Fund warned that major vulnerabilities remain such as high public debt and the large footprint of the state in the economy.
