Crane operator arrested after cable drum kills man in Lagos

A crane operator is undergoing an investigation in police custody after a passerby was killed after an electric cable drum fell on him on Ojo-Igbede Road in the Ojo Local Government Area of Lagos State on Thursday.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, stated in a post on his X handle on Sunday that the crane operator will likely spend the rest of his life in prison for “reckless and negligent act; and involuntary manslaughter.”

He wrote, “The operator of this crane will likely spend life in prison. He did not put any warning or danger sign around the crane as he worked. Neither did he station anyone to ward off passersby.

“A passerby who was engrossed with his phone approached. By an unfortunate twist of fate, the cable drum being lifted fell off its hook and fell on the passerby, killing him instantly.

“Crane operator is in police custody for reckless and negligent act; and involuntary manslaughter.”

Hundeyin further shared a document that read in part, “Any person who, in reckless or negligent manner as to endanger human life or to be likely to cause harm to any other person is guilty of a misdemeanour and is liable to imprisonment for two years.

“A person who unlawfully kills another in circumstances which does not constitute murder is guilty of manslaughter if he causes death by an unlawful and dangerous act; or with gross negligence or reckless disregard for human life.”

The document further disclosed the punishment for manslaughter, which read, “Any person who commits the offence of manslaughter is liable to imprisonment for life.”

Sunday According reports that the incident happened when a fork-lift operator was moving armoured cables from a container on Thursday.

According to a police source, the deceased, who died on his way to the hospital, was busy with his phone when the cable fell on him.

Recall ‘Ningi immediately, SERAP tells Akpabio

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project has urged the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, to recall Senator Abdul Ningi who was suspended for three months over his allegation of budget padding.

Ningi, the lawmaker representing Bauchi Central, was suspended for three months over an interview in which he alleged that the National Assembly padded the 2024 N28.7 trillion budget as against N25tn.

He was quoted as saying, “For the first time in Nigerian history, today we are operating two different budgets. One budget was approved by the National Assembly and signed by President Bola Tinubu, and the one was implemented by the presidency.

“The one approved by us is N25tn while the one operating by the Federal Government is N28tn.”

Two days after his resignation as the Chairman of the Northern Senators’ Forum, Ningi was replaced by Senator Abdulaziz Yar’Adua (APC Katsina Central).

In a statement dated March 16, 2024, and made available to According Online on Sunday, March 17; and signed by SERAP Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare, the group urged Akpabio “to immediately reinstate whistleblower Abdul Ningi who was recently suspended from the Senate over his allegations that the lawmakers padded the 2024 budget by irregularly inserting projects worth N3.7 trillion.”

SERAP equally told the Senate President to refer the allegation to the country’s anti-graft agencies – the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Crimes Commission, which would improve public trust in the Senate.

The statement asked that Akpabio should “urgently refer the allegations that lawmakers padded the 2024 budget by irregularly inserting projects worth N3.7 trillion to appropriate anti-corruption agencies for investigation and prosecution.

“Referring these allegations to appropriate anticorruption agencies would be consistent with the lawmakers’ oath of office and the letter and spirit of the Nigerian Constitution 1999 (as amended).”

Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, on Monday, expressed full support for Ningi during the State Executive Council meeting, saying, “I made it clear that I stand firm in our support for Senator Abdul Ahmed Ningi, of Bauchi Central.”

Meanwhile, SERAP followed suit, saying, “What Senator Ningi has done is a positive act of good citizenship. No whistleblower should ever be penalised simply for making a public interest disclosure.”

SERAP also urged Akpabio “to make a public commitment to discontinue the patently unlawful constituency projects in the next budget cycle.”

The statement continued, “Without inside information, corruption is hard to detect, prevent, and combat. Rather than suspending Senator Ningi, the Senate ought to have used his allegations as a trigger for addressing the lingering problem of budget padding and corruption in the implementation of constituency projects.

“Referring the allegations to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) would improve public trust in the ability of the leadership of the Senate to ensure probity and accountability in the budget process.

“We would be grateful if the recommended measures are taken within 7 days of the receipt and/or publication of this letter. If we have not heard from you by then, SERAP shall consider appropriate legal actions to compel you and the Senate to comply with our requests in the public interest.”

The organisation expressed its concern “about the opacity and lack of accountability in the spending of public funds on constituency projects since the return of democracy in 1999.

“SERAP is seriously concerned that years of allegations of budget padding and corruption in the implementation of constituency projects have contributed to widespread poverty, underdevelopment, and lack of access to public goods and services.”

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have arrested two men for smuggling Tramadol pills.

The agency’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, shared the information via his X account on Sunday, along with a video showing the intercepted contraband.

He also shared a video showing the seized contraband and disclosed how the individuals managed to evade security checkpoints until being intercepted by the NDLEA.

Anambra police probe attack on vigilante office

The Anambra State Police Command said it has began search to “hunt down” gunmen who carried out the Thursday attack on the office of the Anambra State Vigilante Service in Amichi, Nnewi South Local Government Area of the state .

In a press statement on Sunday, the state police spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the Commissioner of Police, Aderemi Adeoye, has ordered probe into the attack, adding that efforts are ongoing to identify and smash the gang behind the attack.

The According had reported that some yet-to-be-identified hoodlums on Thursday invaded the office of the Anambra State AVG in Amichi, Nnewi South LGA and set one of the buildings in the premises ablaze.

The hoodlums, who came in their large numbers, also set ablaze a vigilante operative who they met inside one of the vehicles parked in front of the office. They burnt the man and the vehicle together.

Ikenga, while reacting through the statement, said the commissioner has assured residents that no stone will be left unturned in hunting down the gunmen who attacked and burnt the vigilante office.

The statement read, “The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Aderemi Adeoye, has assured the peace loving people of the state that no stone will be left unturned in hunting down the gunmen who attacked and burnt the vigilante office in Amichi, Nnewi South LGA.

“The CP condoled with the town and people on the loss of a vigilante operative during the attack. He disclosed that effort is ongoing to identify and smash the gang behind the attack.

“He commended vigilante groups across the state for their commitment to the protection of the citizenry and assured that the police would do all within its powers to protect them.”

According to him, the CP has also directed police tactical teams and special forces across the state to respond promptly to all distress calls from vigilante groups anytime they come under attack.

“He prayed for the sweet repose of the vigilante operative who lost his life in the attack and assured that his death will not be in vain,” the statement added.

On Thursday, February 29, bandits abducted scores of worshippers in one of the mosques in Tsafe town, the headquarters of the Tsafe Local Government Area of the state.

An indigene of the area, Garba, told According Online that the bandits invaded the mosque around 5 am. when the people were about to start the morning prayer.

On Thursday, March 14, troops of the Joint Task Force Operation Hadarin Daji thwarted an attempt by bandits to abduct 10 people in Tsafe town, Zamfara State on Tuesday.

The Information Officer of the Operation, Lt. Suleiman Omale said the troops responded to a distress call and were able to overpower the abductors.

Amidst all these, and many more, the APC chieftain said, “The current insecurity and economic crisis in the state are indications that no hope for the common man.

“His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinibu must do something urgent towards curtailing the ugly situation.

“Urgent action from the government at all levels is urgently needed to rescue Zamfara from the critical security situation.”

Bakyasuwa, a security expert, lamented how banditry activities had affected the state.

“It is uncalled for that our communities in the rural areas are becoming slaves to the bandits on a daily basis,” adding that “some bad elements are turning the state into an era of darkness and barbarism.”

“I think Mr. President needs real information on what is happening in Zamfara,” said Bakyasuwa.

The ruling party chieftain advised the President to be cautious of desperate politicians hiding the real security situation in the state for their selfish interests.

He also called on Tinubu to appoint competent personalities from the state to assist him in tackling the terrible security situation.

He said, “People with good records and proven integrity should be appointed from Zamfara into President Tinibu’s Government for the state to have a sound representation especially to help Mr. President with the real information on the true situation of Zamfara.”

“Everyone is aware how APC and President Bola Ahmed Tinibu got massive votes in Zamfara compared to other states in Northern Nigeria.”

“I am using this medium to appeal to Mr. President to consider rewarding those who suffered and delivered for the success of the party rather than desperate politicians who are after their selfish interests,” he concluded.

It’s an unforgivable affront, NIPSS alumni condemn killing of military personnel

Alumni of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies have condemned the killing of military personnel in Delta State.

NIPSS is a policy formation centre for bureaucrats, private sector leaders, military officers, and medium-rank and senior civil servants

The Defence Headquarters on Saturday said a total of 15 military personnel were killed during a communal clash in Delta state

They were said to have met their deaths after responding to a distress call during the clash between Okuama and Okoloba communities in Delta state on Thursday.

The alumni of the institute, however, described the killing as an “unforgivable affront to our nation’s values.”

In a statement on Saturday by the president, Emmanuel Okafor, the alumni demanded that the perpetrators, including the community leaders, must face the law.

The statement read,  “The Alumni Association of the National Institute vehemently condemns the spine-chilling assault on our brave troops of the 181 Amphibious Battalion, Bomadi LGA, Delta State. This is an unforgivable affront to our nation’s values, therefore our hearts bleed for the families of these fallen heroes and all Nigerians.

“Consequently, this despicable act of barbarism must not be swept under the rug. We demand swift and decisive action from both the Federal and Delta State governments. The perpetrators, including the community leaders, must face the full force of the law.

“No one who dares to spill the blood of our defenders and attack Nigeria should escape justice. The perpetrators must face swift justice, with no leniency shown to those who dare to spill the blood of our beloved soldiers for whatever reason.”

The NIPSS alumni feared that the attack could discourage future peace efforts, urging the government to prevent a recurrence of the incident.

“This cowardly attack not only dampens our spirits but also threatens future peace efforts as it strikes at the heart of our nation’s resolve for peace. The government must take decisive measures to prevent such atrocities from recurring. The culprits, especially the youths involved, must be swiftly brought to justice. The traditional rulers overseeing this tragedy must face consequences for their negligence, ” the statement added.

A senator representing Delta North. Senatorial District, Ned Nwoko, has claimed that he received more than N1 billion for constituency projects in the 2024 budget.

Nwoko corroborated Senator Ali Ndume’s claims that the allocation of resources to the legislators often varies based on the magnitude of their constituency projects, indicating that it’s not uncommon for some, including himself, to receive larger amounts.

“Senators get what they lobby for, not because they have the right to it. Everybody just goes about doing what they can do for their constituencies and senatorial districts.

“A better approach would have been for senatorial uniformity. So if they say that everyone should get about N1 billion, be it. But this way, you rely on your weight and contacts to see what you can get for your people.

“We are not talking about money for the senators. This is for projects within our senatorial districts. If you have road, water, or training programmes, all should aggregate to a particular amount,” the lawmaker revealed in a podcast released on Saturday.

Asked if he got as much as N1 billion in allocation, the senator replied, “Of course, I did. That’s why I am who I am. But these are projects for my people.”

Nwoko’s revelation is coming amid the recent controversy of budget padding alleged by Senator Abdul Ningi of the 2024 budget with an extra N3.7 trillion, a fund not tied to any extra project.

While the Red Chamber has denied any wrongdoing, some senators have come out to clarify the amount allocated to them for constituency projects in their various districts.

In reaction to the developments, Nwoko made it clear that the allocated funds are for financing projects, not for personal reimbursement of individual senators.

The Scripture Union Nigeria, on Saturday, called on the Federal Government, lawmakers at all tiers of government, and the various Christian bodies to resist the pressure of legalising lesbianism and bi-sexualism

The union’s National Chairman, Wilfred Onu, made this call at a press conference, held at the headquarters of the union at Samonda in Ibadan, Oyo State capital.

Onu, who was flanked by the union’s General Director, Uwem Udoh, explained that the legislation portends serious danger to the entire global race.

He said, “We are deeply concerned about the seeming acceptance of these unbiblical ideas, contrary to the clear admonitions in the Holy Bible; in utter affront and disregard to the legal implications contained in the Same-Sex Marriage Prohibition Act, 2014; and other statutes/laws that criminalised such conduct in several states of the federation of Nigeria.

“The promotion of this ideology by some religious and political leaders, especially in the Western World is alarming. We can no longer keep silent and allow this immoral and debased movement to destroy the fabric of our human/societal decency, values and public morality.

“As a union that is rooted in Biblical principles, we re-affirm our dedication to promoting traditional Christian values and principles. We affirm that the fulcrum of the LGBTQ+ ideology is unbiblical, immoral, and appears to be founded on lies and penchant for inhuman living.

“We therefore call on the entire Christian community to firmly uphold and advocate the message of God’s love and redemption for all; and totally reject LGBTQ+ ideology that oppose or contradict the teachings and principles/injunctions of the Holy BIble.

“We call on all Christians and true lovers of humanity to rise in defence of the sanctity family life and decent society. The union unequivocally reject the harmful agenda of those persons, organisations and agencies who are promoting these ideologies.

“Furthermore, as a union with the mandate of God to serve children, youths and families, we are committed to safeguard, protect, defend and promote their innocence from harmful influences that deviate from Biblical teachings.
