Oshiomhole congratulates Edo APC gov candidate

Former Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomole, on Monday, congratulated Senator Monday Okpebholo on his emergence as the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the state.

His congratulatory message is coming one month after his alleged anointed candidate, Dennis Idahosa, lost to Okpebholo in the February 22 APC primary election.

Okpebholo polled 12,433 votes to defeat Idahosa, Dr Blessing Agbomhere, and nine other aspirants after the previous poll was declared inconclusive.

Idahosa, however, rejected the result and dragged the ruling party to court for allegedly robbing him of his mandate.

As of Sunday, news filtered in that the APC had replaced Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama, who was earlier announced by the Edo governorship candidate as running mate with Idahosa, at a stakeholders meeting with Vice President Kashim Shettima, Ganduje, and a number of APC bigwigs in attendance.

In the same vein, the acting state chairman of the party, Jarret Tenebe, has announced that both Okpebholo and Idahosa will be officially presented to President Bola Tinubu at the State House in Abuja on Monday.

But barely 24 hours after Idahosa was selected as a running mate, Oshiomhole released a press statement through his senior aide, Victor Oshioke, in Abuja congratulating Okpebholo for emerging as the party’s governorship flag bearer in Edo State.

Britain’s foreign minister David Cameron on Monday said the result of the Russian elections showed “the depth of repression” under President Vladimir Putin.

The Kremlin praised Putin’s landslide re-election for a fifth term in office as “eloquent confirmation” of the people’s support.

But Cameron, who on Sunday evening said the election was neither free nor fair, dismissed the poll outcome as undemocratic.

“These Russian elections starkly underline the depth of repression under President Putin’s regime, which seeks to silence any opposition to his illegal war (in Ukraine),” he said in a statement.

“Putin removes his political opponents, controls the media, and then crowns himself the winner. This is not democracy,” he added.

The Kremlin has presented the weekend election — marred by ballot spoilers and Ukrainian bombardments of border regions — as proof Russians back Putin’s assault on Ukraine.

Cameron also cited the death of Putin’s main political rival Alexei Navalny as evidence of the extent of Putin’s repression.

“The death of Alexei Navalny just weeks before the election was a tragic reminder of the severity of political repression in Russia today.”

Russia should “immediately release all political prisoners”, including British-Russian dual-national Vladimir Kara-Murza, he added.

Opposition politician Kara-Murza, 42, was jailed last April for 25 years — the harshest sentence so far for speaking out against the war in Ukraine.

He was charged with “treason” after using a speech in the United States to say Russia had committed “war crimes” against Ukraine.

Kara-Murza has serious health problems, which his lawyers say were due to two poisoning attempts orchestrated by Russia’s FSB security service in 2015 and 2017.

Army laments poor power as FG begins metering barracks

The Nigerian Army has expressed concern about the inadequate power supply in the Ikeja Military Cantonment, Lagos.

This is as the Federal Government allocated N12.7bn for the mass metering project in all Army formations.

Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, spoke during the flag-off of the metering exercise at the headquarters of the 9th Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Ikeja Military Cantonment, at the weekend.

According to a statement made available to The According on Sunday by his media aide, Bolaji Tunji, Adelabu explained that “for the current exercise, the sum of N12.7 billion has been released out of a total of N40bn for the mass metering project.”

The minister had stated that the mass metering in Army formations nationwide “will enable us to know what is being consumed on a monthly basis in order to ensure appropriate billings and ease collections.”

The overall intention, he said, was to eliminate it and make estimated billing a thing of the past.

Adelabu stated that the current exercise will last for six weeks, after which the second phase would commence.

The minister, who was received at the Army headquarters by the Commander, Major General A.M Adetuyi, and the Chief Executive Officer of De Haryor Global Services, Ashade Olatunbosun, who is in charge of the metering project, said the current exercise is part of President Bola Tinubu’s agenda to ensure regular supply of electricity to Army formations nationwide.

“This is one of Mr President’s objectives, as contained in the Renewed Hope Agenda, to ensure that electricity supply to the armed forces is prioritised and they do not suffer, especially in the enjoyment of public utilities,” he said.

Adelabu noted that the smart metres being installed are tamper-proof and would eliminate energy theft because they cannot be by-passed..

He revealed further that the metre allows interconnectivity between grid and off-grid solar power supply.

The minister had said that part of the energy blueprint for the country is to build off-grid power sources such as solar energy for military barracks located in remote areas without grid supply, saying “where we have grid supply, we can interchange between the grid and solar supply if we are not satisfied with the number of hours supplied by the distribution companies.”

Speaking, Olatunbosun said the second phase of the project will begin in Abuja and Enugu simultaneously, adding that military formations across the 11 DisCos will benefit from the exercise.

“Army formations under Jos, Abuja, Ibadan, Enugu, Kaduna, Ikeja, and Eko distribution companies will benefit from the exercise,” Olatunbosun said.

Earlier, Major General Adetuyi said the Federal Government’s metering initiative was timely as the brigade headquarters had been having “epileptic power supply” over time.

He said, “When I investigated, I found out that we were only being given three hours of electricity daily, and on some days, we do not even get supply. We have tried to resolve this; we have even involved the state government without any result.

“We also discovered that we were always being given estimated bills, though we would not have minded if power supply had been regular. However, this commendable metering project has gladdened our hearts.”

Terrorists on Sunday night kidnapped 87 people after launching a fresh attack on the Kajuru-Station community in Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

A member of the Kajuru-Station Youths, Harisu Dari, confirmed the incident to our correspondent on Monday in Kaduna.

Harisu said the terrorists also broke into some shops and stole food items and other valuables.

He said they invaded the village around 10 pm.

The attack came barely two days after 15 women and a man were abducted in the Dogon-Noma community of the same local government.

Kajuru and Chikun LGs had in the past two weeks become the hotbed of kidnapping, causing tension in the state.

Harisu explained that no contact has been established yet with the 87 locals abducted on Sunday night.

“As of the time I visited the community this morning, security operatives have not been drafted to help restore the confidence of the villagers.

“The villagers are traumatic with the sad development. The government needs to re-strategise in tackling these terrorists,” he said.

SSANU, NASU begin strike, ground varsities

Members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and the Non-Academic Staff Union have begun a nationwide strike today (Monday) over alleged unfair treatment and disparity in the payment of salaries by the Federal Government.

Last Monday, the unions threatened to shut down hostels and power supply in universities across the country if the Federal Government fails to meet its demands before today, March 18, 2024.

National President of SSANU, Muhammed Ibrahim, said his members, including Vice Chancellors, registrars, and bursars, have not been paid 2022 arrears.

On Sunday, Ibrahim informed The According that the two unions were set for their nationwide strike.

Meanwhile, the Minister for Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, stated that he was unaware of SSANU/NASU’s planned strike.

However, during the Channels Television’s Morning Show programme, Ibrahim declared that the strike had started.

“Definitely, it (the strike) has already started.

“As of today (Monday), all our workers in registry, bursary, works and maintenance, security, and students’ affairs have withdrawn their services and nothing moves within the administration of any public university in Nigeria and that will be the case for the next seven days until and unless the needful is done,” he stated.

The SSANU president stressed that no government representative has reached out to the non-academic unions, noting that though some have reached out unofficially, their assurances cannot be taken to the bank.

He wondered why some government officials would not fully comply with President Bola Tinubu’s instruction to pay 2022 arrears.

He added that the Minister of Labour , Nkiruka Onyejeocha, has not reached out to the aggrieved unions despite issuing a seven-day notice last Monday.

This, he said was a departure from the responsiveness of the ex-Labour Minister Chris Ngige.

He stressed that the unions would go back to their toolbox and decide the next line of action should the government fail to heed the unions’ demands after the seven-day warning strike, which commenced today.

The Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution has condemned the killing of 16 soldiers in a communal clash in Delta State.

Mutilated bodies of the soldiers were recovered by the Joint Task Force under the supervision of the General Officer Commanding 6 Division, Nigerian Army, Major General Jamal Abdussalam, at the Okuama community.

A commanding officer, two Majors, one Captain, 12 soldiers, and one civilian lost their lives in the ambush on Thursday, March 14, 2024.

The neighbouring communities have been engaged in a communal land dispute since January 27, 2024, when some youths from Okoloba were said to have ambushed and killed three Okuama youths, Igho Meshack, Godspower Awusa, and Okiemute Agbabuleke, over an age-long land dispute in the area as they were returning from Okwagbe.

In a statement personally signed by the Director-General, IPCR, Joseph Ochogwu, on Monday, the institute noted that the act portrayed the country in a bad light at a point when President Bola Tinubu was doing his best to wage war against insecurity.

Ochogwu stated that security personnel should be commended for their efforts in securing the nation and not being killed.

He stated, “IPCR condemns the killings of 16 soldiers in the autonomous community of Okuama, Ewu Kingdom, in Ughelli South Area of Delta State.

“It is very sad that while we are praying fervently and working for peace in our country to encourage and attract development, some persons are out there perpetuating violence.

“The killing of our trained officers and soldiers, who were on a peace mission has portrayed the country in a bad light at a point when President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is using all within his power to wage war against insecurity.

“Our gallant security personnel needs commendation in their patriotic effort to secure the nation in this trying time. They need the support of every Nigerian, irrespective of the state or region. Citizens must give the military one hundred per cent support as the institution represents our national sovereignty.”

The DG therefore called for a proper investigation into the incident.

“The bravery and commitment of our soldiers exemplify the highest virtue of patriotism, courage, and sacrifice, and they should be supported to boost their morale to do more for the country.

“We are calling for a thorough investigation into the incident and urging the military to remain very professional at all times no matter the provocation,” he added.
