Adamawa police arrest 58 suspected criminals

The Adamawa State Police Command has arrested 58 suspected criminals after a raid across different locations in the state.

The Adamawa State Commissioner of Police, Mr Dankombo Morris, said this when he addressed newsmen in Yola, the state capital, on Tuesday.

Morris said the suspects included 40 young men who were believed to be members of a notorious group ‘Shila boys’.

“Eleven of them were arrested for kidnapping, while seven were arrested for armed robbery.

“We have since commenced discreet investigations on their cases, and we would soon prosecute those found culpable in court of law,” he said.

He said that a Toyota Prado Jeep with registration No.ABJ344HX and one 18-seat bus with registration No.RSH79FA were recovered from the suspects.

“Other items are two AK 47 rifles with 25 rounds of live ammunition, N10,690.00 cash, a leather containing charms and rings,1 power bank, and two GSM Handsets.

“I hereby solicit for the cooperation and understanding of the general public, especially by volunteering useful information to the police,’’ he said.

He assured of working in close collaboration with sister security agencies for effective service delivery.

Otti approves bursary for Abia students in law schools 

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has approved the payment of bursary awards to Abia State indigenes in law schools across the nation.

The state Commissioner for Information and Culture, Okey Kanu, disclosed this while briefing journalists on the outcome of this week’s Executive Council meeting presided over by the governor in Umuahia on Monday.

He said the approval of the bursary was in keeping with the premium the state government places on education.

He added that the state government has approved the renovation of 170 primary schools, which translates to 10 primary schools per local government.

He said this was in addition to six model schools that were already being renovated.

He added that 51 secondary schools have also been approved for renovation, and this translates to three schools per LGA across the state.

“The schools will have some features that make them modern schools. They would have staff quarters, a caretaker’s house, the head teacher’s house,  and a gatehouse. The primary schools, of course, would have nurseries. This again is in keeping with  the  promise to Abians,” he added.

The commissioner announced regrettably that WAEC has delisted some schools in Abia over examination malpractices.

He said that most of the schools are private schools.

According to the commissioner, though the government is not happy over the development, the action is, however, in line with the policy of the present administration to do things right.

He also revealed that Otti will on Wednesday flag off the construction of the 30 kilometres Arochukwu – Ndiokereke – Ozuabam Road and the 11.5 kilometres Nunya -Eluama -Isuikwuato Road a week later on March 26.

Naira depreciation pushes Nigeria’s imports to N35tn

Nigeria’s total imports grew to N35.9tn in 2023, from N25.5tn recorded in 2022, according to data by the National Bureau of Statistics.

A breakdown of the data showed that in the first and second quarters of 2023, total imports stood at N6.4tn. It increased to N9tn in the third quarter and again to N14tn in the fourth quarter.

By volume, manufactured imports topped the chart with imports worth N18.3tn. Agric imports stood at N2.2tn while imports of raw materials totalled N3tn.

On the other hand, Nigeria was able to churn out exports worth N35.9tn. However much of these were under the category of crude oil which constituted N29tn while exports of other oil products stood at N3.5tn.

Agricultural exports were N1.2tn while manufactured goods exported outside Nigeria totalled N778bn.

This means that Nigeria recorded a balance of trade of –N1tn in the agricultural sector and a staggering –N17.5tn in the manufacturing sector.

Speaking with The According, the Chief Executive Officer of the Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise, Muda Yusuf blamed naira depreciation for the significant increase in exports on a year-on-year basis.

He said, “I think it is because of the naira depreciation. If you are importing something that was $1m when the exchange rate was N450, now you are importing products worth $1m and the exchange rate is N1,500.

“That is three times already if you multiply it in naira. So, in dollar terms, it is possible that the import has even reduced. We have to consider that.”

The increase in exports comes amid President Bola Tinubu’s drive to boost non-oil exports and diversify the economy away from crude oil exports.

According to NBS data, the total non-oil export of Nigeria in 2019 (the highest in recent times) is just about $9.13bn.

While presenting a paper at an event organised by the Nigerian Export Promotion Council, the Director-General of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, Segun Ajayi-Kadir said Nigeria has not done well in global export trade as it ranked 52nd among nations.

He added that the country has also not done well domestically in terms of the share of non-oil and manufactured exports to total exports.

He listed factors militating against exports including the high cost of local and imported raw materials, insecurity across the country, including industrial areas, dearth of skilled manpower.

Others include high cost of transportation, forex instability and deterioration in exchange rate, inadequate access to funds/high-interest rates on commercial bank loans

He said, “However, the discovery of crude oil brought a shift that made the country majorly depend on the oil sector to the neglect of other sectors.

“This made the economy susceptible to fluctuations in revenue, occasioned by the usual instability associated with the prices of crude oil in the international market.”

In January, the Executive Director of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council, Nonye Ayeni, while addressing the media on the performance report of the non-oil export sector for 2023, said the value of Nigeria’s non-oil export revenue recorded a marginal decrease to $4.5bn.

The drop represents a $300m or 6.3 per cent decline from the $4.8bn revenue accrued to government coffers in 2022 and $500m less than the $5bn target set by the council for the year.

She said, “In 2022, there was a $4.8bn in terms of value. And in 2023, there was a marginal decline to $4.5bn. But we got an increase in the volume of exports. In 2023, we had 6.68, million metric tons of manufactured, semi-processed, solid minerals to agricultural commodities.”

Explaining reasons for the decline, Nonye blamed the weak poor exchange rate, the surge in informal trade, political instability in neighbouring countries and export rejection amongst others.

Kalu made the call on Monday in Abuja at a retreat organised for senior legislative aides attached to his office.

President Bola Tinubu, on Monday, pledged his support for the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Monday Okpebholo, and his running mate, Dennis Idahosa, ahead of the  September 2024 governorship poll.

“We are going to stand with you like the wall of Gibraltar. That is all I can assure you,” said Tinubu when he presented the party’s flag to Okpebholo at the State House, Abuja.

The President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, in a statement on Monday, quoted him as asserting that the APC was headed for victory to upstage the ruling Peoples Democratic Party in Edo State and produce the state’s sixth civilian governor since its creation in August 1991.

The statement was titled, ‘President Tinubu presents APC flag to Senator Okpebholo, says party on the path to victory in Edo guber.’

In 2008, Edo became one of eight Nigerian states with off-cycle elections resulting from court judgments that overturned the results of at least one previous election.

In November that year, a tribunal and the Court of Appeal re-examined polls held in 2007 and sacked Governor Oserheimen Osunbor of the Peoples Democratic Party and handed victory to Adams Oshiomhole of the APC.

Addressing a gathering of party stalwarts led by the APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, the President said, ‘’If you are happy; we are happy. If you are determined; we are determined. We are going to work with you.

“We are going to stand with you like the wall of Gibraltar. That is all I can assure you. The party is supreme, but victory is superior and very important.”

President Tinubu commended the leadership of the party in Edo for their efforts towards the success of the primary that produced the flag bearers.

He also lauded Oshiomhole, a former governor of the state, for what he described as exemplary leadership.

“Distinguished senator and our flagbearer, we are putting you forward in order to hold the party in trust for us and achieve victory for us.

“You and your running mate have been described as giant killers, and you have worked tirelessly with the party leadership,’’ Tinubu said.

While inviting Edo State woman leader, Betty Okoebor, to speak on the party’s readiness for the election, Tinubu reiterated that the strong support of women would ensure the party’s victory.

 ‘’If the women say we are going to win, then we are good to go because they constitute the largest number of voters and the most dedicated,” the President said.

In his remarks, the APC National Chairman, Ganduje, stressed the need for unity of purpose within the party towards achieving victory in the election.

“Our candidate is soft-spoken, focused, and an achiever. He is a product that is highly marketable, and I am confident that with him as our flagbearer, we will bring Edo back to our party,” Ganduje said.

Meanwhile, Okpebholo alleged that some forces saw his emergence as a threat and were determined to stop his victory at the primaries. However, he said Edo voters would decide who leads them on September 21.

“The record I have, the governor (Godwin Obaseki, PDP) has not been able to achieve it for eight years. So, this is a clear indication that my coming is even a threat. They were praying that I should not win this primary.

“On September 21, Edo people will speak. We are ready to take over Edo State. What has happened at the primary shows that is the President is a democrat, a voice for the voiceless.

“The primary in Edo was well contested. And a winner has emerged. We have our deputy now. We are setting the ball rolling. The sky is our limit. Now it’s time to say bye-bye to PDP in Edo,” he stated.

The According also understands that Monday’s meeting afforded parties the opportunity to address disagreements that have been brewing in Edo APC for weeks.

It was learned that Idahosa was asked to withdraw his protest litigation against the candidacy of Okpebholo.

The primary election through which Okpebholo emerged as a candidate had been mired in controversy. Idahosa was first declared the party’s nominee by the Governor Hope Uzodimma-led committee.

The first round of voting on February 18 saw the trio of Okpebholo, Idahosa and Dekeri laying claim to the party’s governorship ticket.

Consequently, the party’s National Working Committee declared the exercise as inconclusive owing to several irregularities. Okpebholo eventually secured victory with 12,433 votes in a re-run held on February 23.

Earlier, the APC had unveiled the lawmaker representing Ovia Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Dennis Idahosa, as Okpebholo’s running mate for the September 21 governorship poll.

Meanwhile,  Oshiomole, on Monday officially congratulated Okpebholo for emerging the APC governorship candidate in Edo.

 “Dear Senator Monday Okpebholo, I extend my heartfelt congratulations on your well-deserved emergence as the flag bearer of our esteemed party, the All Progressives Congress, for the forthcoming Edo State governorship election. Telcos pledge 100% voice, data service today

The Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria has said voice and data services affected by the cut in the undersea fibre optics along the coasts of Cote d’Ivoire and Senegal will be completely restored on Tuesday (today).

The Chairman of ALTON, Gbenga Adebayo, made this disclosure in an exclusive interview with The According on Monday.

Last Thursday, cuts in the undersea cable supplying broadband Internet connectivity to Nigeria and countries in the West African sub-region forced many banks, financial institutions, telecom companies, and allied firms to scale down their operations.

The cable companies affected include the West African Cable System and African Coast to Europe on the West Coast route from Europe, both of which have experienced faults. Additionally, SAT3 and MainOne have reported downtime due to the cable cut.

Over the weekend, the telcos, banks, and other financial institutions rerouted their traffic to alternative service providers in a move to mitigate the impact of the disruption. While some providers had confirmed the gradual restoration of services, others were still in the process of migration, leading to ongoing delays and congestion.

On Monday, the Nigerian Communications Commission announced in a statement that services had been restored to approximately 90 per cent of their peak utilisation capacities.

The statement read in part, “Following the disruption on March 14, 2024, which affected data and voice services due to cuts in undersea fibre optics along the coasts of Cote d’Ivoire and Senegal, we are pleased to announce that services have now been restored to approximately 90 per cent of their peak utilization capacities.

“All operators who were impacted by the cuts have taken recovery capacity from submarine cables that were not impacted by the cuts and have thus recovered approximately 90 per cent of their peak utilisation capacities.

“Mobile Network Operators have assured the Commission that data and voice services would operate optimally pending full repairs of the undersea cables as they have managed to activate alternative connectivity to bring the situation back to normalcy.

“We extend our appreciation to telecom consumers for their patience and understanding during the downtime caused by the undersea fibre cuts,” the Director of Public Affairs at NCC, Reuben Muoka, noted.

Speaking with The According, Adebayo expressed confidence that services would be back in full operation by Tuesday, underscoring the substantial efforts undertaken to minimise the disruption’s impact.

He said, “From the progress we have seen, services will be restored completely tomorrow (Tuesday). We are almost there. There are many submarine cables routed to Nigeria. Some are routed through the Ivory Coast and Senegal. Others are routed in other directions. So, that incident was an incident affecting that particular route.

“The other operators not following that route were not affected. So, they improvised an alternate route. It could have also been the other way, with other people routing their traffic the other way. Its actually a common thing in network planning.”

According to Adebayo, none of the telcos operating in Nigeria are exempted from the disruption; however, the degree of impact remains different.

The chairman stated, “Every telco was affected by the cable cut because it was a major link to Nigeria. The degree of the impact may differ for network providers. All communications in West Africa were affected. There was no exemption. It’s not just Nigeria.”

Meanwhile, the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, disclosed plans to spearhead a global collaboration aimed at enhancing the protection of undersea cables.

Tijani said there was a need to review international laws and foster partnerships with regional and global bodies to accelerate efforts to safeguard this vital infrastructure.

The minister had acknowledged the role of the NCC alongside Globacom, West Indian Ocean Cable Company, MTN, and MainOne to swiftly resolve the issues.

According to him, the initiative marks a significant step towards ensuring the resilience and reliability of undersea cables, crucial lifelines in today’s interconnected world.

The minister said submarine cable cuts, while disruptive, were proving to be a catalyst for resilience and growth in our digital economy.

Apart from the telcos, cable company MainOne was also hit by the disruption in services. Most of the Nigerian banks rely on MainOne for Internet services.

It said on Friday that the repair process for its damaged submarine cable may take up to five weeks.

The firm revealed that it had a maintenance agreement with Atlantic Cable Maintenance and Repair Agreement to provide repair services for its submarine cable.

The repair procedure involves inspecting and testing the cable joints for defects, followed by lowering the cable back to the seabed and guiding it to an optimal position.

A prosecution witness for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ijeoma Maltida, has revealed how the Head of the Stakeholders Unit, Federal Inland Revenue Services, Emmanuella-Eteta Ita, siphoned and diverted large sums of money meant for stakeholders’ assignments to the account of her private school, Surestart School Limited.

The spokesperson for the EFCC, Dele Oyewale, revealed the development of the court proceeding in a statement on Monday.

Oyewale said, “A prosecution witness in the ongoing trial of the Head of Stakeholders Unit of the Federal Inland Revenue Services, Emmanuella Eteta Ita, on Monday, March 18, 2024, told Justice Giwa Ogunbanjo of the Federal High Court in Abuja, how Ita siphoned and diverted large sums of money meant for stakeholders’ assignments to her private school, Surestart School Limited..

“Ita ran Surestart School Limited while serving as the Head of the Stakeholders Unit of the FIRS.

“The witness, Ijeoma Maltida, while giving her testimony during a cross-examination by defence counsel, Paul Erokoro, revealed that the first defendant, Ita, undertook some stakeholders’ assignments and the funds meant for the projects were traced into her account with the payment narration.

“Investigations showed that the same funds were sent directly into the account of the second defendant, Surestart School Limited.”

Quoting the witness, Oyewale noted, “When she came to our office, we took her statement, we were cordial with her, and she was treated very well with utmost respect. While she was with us for reconciliation, she started bringing documents, and she also opted to pay back for some reconciliation she could not account for.

“She said in her statement that she would pay back the money, I don’t know where she got the money from, and so far, she has refunded about N17 million, though she told us that she benefited about N5 million from the programme,.

“I don’t know the standard practice of sourcing for funds before asking for reimbursement, and it is not within the scope of our investigation. All I know is that she undertook some of the stakeholders’ events, and we saw that those monies that came from FIRS went directly into the account of the second defendant, and the description was that the assignment was not done.”

Matilda continued, “She said the vendors that were supposed to do the events had given their evidence in court and testified that the receipts didn’t come from them. She further claimed that those receipts were given to her by one Daniel, who was a staff of FIRS.

“We were told he was late, and we demanded the death certificate which was given to us. We requested his account details, and we discovered he was also a beneficiary. We wrote to FIRS, UBA, System Spec, and invited everyone involved in this matter, and everything we have here is a result of our investigations.”

Oyewale noted that after the cross-examination, Justice Ogunbanjo adjourned the matter till March 20 and 21, 2024, for continuation of cross-examination.

Following the official unveiling of the Super Eagles new kits by  Nike on Monday, some Nigerians swarmed social media to vent their displeasure over the new kits, According Sports Extra reports.

In a video shared on Nike’s social media page, the Eagles’ jerseys were  unveiled, ending speculations following the earlier leaked designs.

For their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign, the Eagles will wear the new jerseys and for the first time the three-time African champions will wear white as their home kits, with the green jersey, traditionally their home kit, serving as the away kit.

The new home jersey features green-white-green tape on the sleeves and shorts, with a faded eagle design on the front.

Another notable feature on the new kits is the absence of the Eagles logo from the shirts, which only appeared on the shorts, while Nike’s logo is in red, deviating from the usual Eagles colour scheme.

Fans were also surprised to see the necks of the jerseys in square shape with the inscription on the shirts displaying ‘Naija.’

An X user Mr FEMO disagreed with Nike on the ‘Naija’ inscription on the shirts.

“I love the design but why not just write ‘Nigeria’ on the front of the Jersey and not naija. The person that came up with that is simply not promoting Nigeria as a country. That alone made the jersey look poorly made because it has no basis. Fix up!”

Yusuff Azeez added, “Green-White-Green are our national colours and ought to be conspicuous on our home kit. What I see here is all white and tiny shades of green. Not cool. Besides, the Nike logo should have been in green color. And our official name isn’t Naija but NIGERIA.”

Surprised by the introduction of red on the jersey, Uche stated, “That should be away kit please, I thought green was the official colour and why is the Nike logo red?

Speaking in the same vein, JoLovesMilan said, “Looks like a jersey that is meant for Senegal. There’s nothing “Nigerian” about this Jersey. Every jersey should have symbols of our People, Culture and Land on it. This is poor from Nike!”

Without mincing words, Sarki Sulieman tweeted, “What is this rubbish @Nike? We want a standard jersey not an Al Hilal jersey that’s competing with Everton.”

“Nike will just look at this country called Nigeria and design what they like for us,” Engr_Horlla Dolapzy said.

Also disagreeing with the design, Kazeem Seiduk tweeted, “This doesn’t make sense in my opinion. And which one be the square neck?”

Ibe Onye simply said, “Those jerseys will not fly. The country is Nigeria, not Naija.”

Another X user, Dele Michaels, offered his advice to the American company.

“Kindly take this as a gentle feedback. This is 2024 please redesign. Una sha never produce mass quantities!”

Baller added, “You guys goofed on this one, what’s that neckline?
