Journalists held hostage in Osun court

0

Some journalists were held hostage in the premises of the Federal High Court in Osogbo, Osun State, on Tuesday, as the court heard applications for and against the bail of a member of Osun Park Management System, Olalekan Oyeyemi.

Oyeyemi, popularly known as ‘Emir’, has been on trial on a 10-count that include conspiracy, malicious damage, unlawful killing and acts of terrorism.

He had pleaded not guilty, while his counsel, Edmund Biriomoni, filed a formal bail application for his release.

The prosecutor in charge of the matter, Rabiu Usman from the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters, Abuja, however, opposed the bail application at last Thursday proceedings, making the court adjourn the matter till Tuesday for hearing on the applications and subsequently remanded the defendant.

At the resumed hearing of the matter, defence counsel, Biriomoni, informed the court of his decision to withdraw a bail application filed on February 7, 2024, and drew attention to another application for bail he filed on March 13, 2024.

In moving application for bail on behalf of his client, Biriomoni, he urged the court to admit Oyeyemi to bail, pending the hearing and determination of the charge pressed against him.

But Mr Francis Osei, who held brief for the prosecutor, Usman, opposed the application, saying the prosecution had filed a counter application, asking the court not to consider the defendant’s plea for bail.

In his ruling, Justice N. Ayo-Emmanuel, reserved the ruling on the applications, saying the date of the next sitting would be communicated to the parties in the matter.

Meanwhile, suspected hoodlums, who had thronged the court in large numbers held some journalists covering the matter hostage within the court premises after the presiding judge had adjourned the matter.

The hoodlums, who identified some of the journalists while the court was in session, threatened to attack them after the proceedings.

The journalists involved could not leave the premises for about 40 minutes after adjournment, until some police operatives deployed to the premises escorted them out of the court, as the suspected hoodlums, who converged under a tree outside the court, were ordered to vacate the area by a female police operative.

Ban importation of local fabrics, Reps urge FG

0

The House of Representatives on Tuesday urged the Federal Government to ban the importation of adire/kampala and other local fabrics to protect the local market and earn foreign exchange for the country.

The resolution of the House followed the adoption of the motion titled, “Call to revive and promote the traditional fabric industry of Adire/Kampala to boost the nation’s cultural heritage, moved by a member representing Abeokuta South Federal Constituency, Ogun State, Afolabi Afuape.

Moving the motion, the lawmaker noted the historical significance of Adire/Kampala (tie-and-dye) fabrics in Nigeria while emphasising the need to protect and promote local production to preserve the nation’s cultural heritage.

He said, “The House notes that Nigeria’s Adire/Kampala fabric industry is crucial for economic growth, cultural preservation, and fostering entrepreneurship among citizens, particularly the youth.

“The House observes that the influx of foreign imitations of adire/kampala  into Nigeria’s market has negatively impacted the local industry, leading to a decline in the livelihood of local producers and job loss”

The lawmaker further warned that failure to protect consumers from imitations of Adire/Kampala products from foreign markets could lead to dire consequences for the Nigerian local cottage industry.

He prayed the House to mandate the Committee on Commerce to collaborate with the National Directorate of Employment to establish formal training and orientation programmes on skills, quality control, marketing, and business management for all local fabric producers and to monitor the relevant agencies charged with evaluating the periodic progress of the Nigerian cottage industry.

When the motion was put into voice votes by the Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas, who presided over the plenary session, it was unanimously supported by members.

Following the adoption of the motion, the House mandated the Committee on Information, National Orientation, Ethics, and Values, in collaboration with the National Orientation Agency, to launch a nationwide campaign to promote the cultural significance of Adire/Kampala and other locally produced fabrics and to patronise locally produced fabrics.

Man Utd teenager Mainoo gets first England call-up

0

Manchester United teenager Kobbie Mainoo has earned his first England call-up for their forthcoming friendlies against Brazil and Belgium.

Mainoo is said emerging as one of United’s brightest young stars in a breakthrough season for the 18-year-old.

Established in United’s central midfield after 20 impressive appearances this term, Mainoo has been rewarded with a promotion to the England squad as they build towards Euro 2024.

Mainoo moved into Gareth Southgate’s senior group having initially been named in the England Under-21 squad.

“Kobbie Mainoo has received his first call-up to the England senior squad,” England’s Football Association said in a statement said on Tuesday.

In their final matches before Southgate names his squad for the European Championship in Germany, England face Brazil at Wembley on Saturday and host Belgium on March 26.

Mainoo will get the chance to stake his claim for a seat on the plane to the Euros, with Southgate a long-term admirer of the youngster.

Speaking at the Nations League draw in February, Southgate said: “He’s doing brilliantly. I’m not certain he’s necessarily going to be a defensive midfielder, as such.

“He’s quite a progressive player but he’s had a fabulous start to his career and it will be good to monitor him as we go forward.”

Mainoo joined United as a nine-year-old and made his debut in a League Cup game against Charlton in 2023.

His first United start came against Everton in November last year and he scored his maiden goal for the club in their FA Cup win at Newport in January.

Police closing in on Edo PDP chairman’s kidnappers -Police

0

The Edo State Commissioner of Police, Funsho Adegboye, has said that the command is closing in on kidnappers of the chairman of the state Peoples Democratic Party, Dr Tony Aziegbemi.

Aziegbemi was abducted by gunmen on Friday at about 11pm on Idaro Street, off Country Home Road, Benin, Edo State.

He was said to have left a meeting at the Government Bouse and was going home in his vehicle when he was waylaid and kidnapped in the presence of his driver, who was attempting to climb a speed breaker.

Adegboye, who spoke to journalists on Monday while parading some suspects, disclosed that the command’s operatives are on the trail of the kidnappers.

He said, “We have intensified our patrol. We were in the creeks on Sunday, around Ologbo, Obayantor, and other parts of the country.

“We are not leaving any stone unturned, we are already on the trail of the people that perpetrated that crime and I can assure you that in no distance time, we are going to rescue him unhurt.”.

The CP, however, noted that the command doesn’t give preferential treatment to any kidnapping victim or treat one as more important than others.

He added, “Crime is crime, victim is victim. I want to let you know that we care for all. We don’t want to profile victims as if one is special to the other.

“The governor of the state, Godwin Obaseki, is supporting us in this way. No victim is greater than other victims. That market woman is also as important as any other victim.”

Diri advises Sylva against politicising death of soldiers

0

The Governor of Bayelsa State, Douye Diri, on Tuesday, chided the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate in the November 11, 2023 governorship election in the state, Timipre Sylva, over his statement on the March 14 killings of 17 military personnel in Okuama, a community in the Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State.

He stated that Sylva’s politicisation of the condemnable killings of soldiers in active service to their country smacked of insensitivity, especially at a time when true patriots were mourning the unfortunate incident.

According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr Daniel Alabrah, Sylva had in a terse statement credited to him and circulating on social media, claimed that “the last Bayelsa governorship election featured a lot (sic) of disheartening state sponsorship of gunmen. Today, we all see the result of that act of desperation and the unnecessary loss of precious Nigerian lives.”

Diri wondered why the former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources “chose to dance on the graves of the slain soldiers in his false allusion to the use of non-state actors in the governorship poll in the state.”

He also noted that Sylva’s statement was akin to the proverbial pot calling the kettle black when the APC governorship candidate’s antecedents as a politician were “like an open book known to everyone.”

The governor said it is just as ridiculous that the same Sylva was whipping up negative sentiments and spreading falsehood over the presence of soldiers in Igbomotoru, a Bayelsa community, where the military had reportedly extended its investigation into the Okuama incident.

He said, “The military authorities should be allowed to conduct a thorough investigation into the sordid occurrence in Okuama. Comments should be restrained at this time while efforts are on to unravel the perpetrators.

“It is, therefore, very unfortunate and sad that Chief Sylva chose to play politics with the evil act of the killing of Nigerian soldiers at a time patriots in our country were outraged and mourning.

“Introducing politics into the Okuama killing is insensitive just as it is condemnable and akin to dancing on their graves. For those who know, this is like the pot calling the kettle black.

“However, Sylva’s unending bellyaching and whining over the 2023 Bayelsa governorship election does not change the fact that it has been won and lost. He and his ilk should embrace this reality and join hands with our government to further the development of our state.”

Reps summon minister over alleged misuse of $300m anti-malaria fund

0

The House of Representatives Committee on Anti-Malaria, HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis on Tuesday gave the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Mohammed Pate, and the Permanent Secretary, Daju Kachollom, a 72-hour ultimatum to appear before it over allegations of misuse of $300m meant to tackle malaria since 2021.

This is just as the committee threatened to order the arrest of the permanent secretary, Kachallom Daju, if she fails to honour the summons, having failed to appear before it after three invitations.

The duo are also expected to answer questions on allegations of denying indigenous manufacturers of insecticidal nets from participating in the contract for the procurement of the items and other related products.

The Chairman of the Committee and member representing Isuikwato/Umuneochi Federal Constituency, Abia State, Amobi Ogah, who read the committee’s resolutions on Tuesday at the National Assembly, expressed the displeasure of his members about the Permanent Secretary’s absence.

He said, “Nigeria borrowed $100m from the Islamic Bank, which was approved by the National Assembly in 2021.

“Out of the $100m, $10m was granted, and another $200m borrowed from World Bank in the same year for Impact Project (Malaria Financing Agreement), making it a total of $300m

“The resolution by the National Assembly is that local content must be prioritised to encourage local manufacturers, but the ministry went ahead to contract the United Nations Office for Project Services  to do the procurement process at a cost of over $3m for the purchase of anti-malaria commodities.”

Describing malaria as an epidemic in Nigeria, Ogah said the government has always wanted to help the people, adding that “Most times, the civil servants are our problem. This money has been made available since 2021. We have been inviting the Permanent Secretary. This is the third time we have invited her to come and explain to us what has happened.”

He continued, “Have they used the money? If they have not used the money, where is the money? It is a matter of simple explanation. But they have been running away, calling all manner of people to talk to us. But we are here to defend Nigerians. We were elected to represent our people. Nigerians cannot continue to die of malaria, even when the government has made every necessary effort to see that eradication is being achieved by 2030.

“The National Assembly will no longer tolerate the attitude of civil servants taking parliament for a ride. Enough is enough. We are elected by our people to represent them. We are elected to talk for them and defend them. And we are talking about a disease that has turned to an epidemic. We will not hesitate to invoke our constitutional right to compel the Permanent Secretary to be arrested if she fails to honour the summons.”.

The lawmaker noted that a few weeks ago, the committee received a petition from Seasons Law Firm on behalf of Rosies Textile Mills Limited, accusing the Ministry of Health and Permanent Secretary for denying indigenous manufacturers of insecticidal nets from participating in the contract for the procurement of insecticidal nets and other related products.

Ogah called for the parliament’s intervention to address the issue.

“It is clear that the National Assembly has to intervene on this issue.  We are going to intervene to forestall this matter ending in litigation. We will mediate and bring the parties involved to a round table with a view to resolving the matter amicably,” he assured.
