More facts on the attack on the Madaka community in the Rafi Local Government Area of Niger State emerged on Friday revealing that over 20 persons were reportedly killed in the onslaught.

Two monarchs and the vigilance group commander of the area were also said to have been killed in that attack on Thursday while the bandits were said to have overrun two communities in the area, burning houses and shops.

The gunmen were said to have stormed the community at about 3 pm on Thursday and shot indiscriminately, leaving many dead and injured.

The Village Head of the Madaka community, Saleh Kakuri, and one Commander Iko, who was the Deputy Commander of the vigilance group in the area under the Madaka District of Rafi were also killed in the attack.

The bandits also invaded Majanjan district where they seized the village head, Salihu Immahuri, his counterpart in Anguwan Bala, and his two wives and killed them.

Among the slain victims were Adamu Immahuri, a brother of the deceased ruler, and his four wives, as well as Shehu Salihu and Jamilu Isah.

A resident of the community who spoke under condition of anonymity said, “Over 30 bodies have been recovered by the villagers. The bandits attacked the communities at about 3:30 pm on Thursday and operated for hours without response from security agencies.

“The bandits operated for as long as they wanted without any challenge from the army or police.”

However, the District Head of Madaka, Isah Bawale, confirmed the incident in a phone interview on Friday.

He said,  “The attack occurred around 3 pm on Thursday when the community market was in full session resulting in huge casualties. Over 50 houses, including shops, some cars, and motorcycles were burnt down during the attack.”

Another resident who gave his name as Adamu said, “The suspected armed men broke into the village shooting indiscriminately, killing their victims. They also burnt down the market and abducted an unspecified number of the villagers (and took them) to an unknown destination.”

Adamu lamented about the absence of the police, adding, “There was a similar attack by bandits on the same communities a few years ago, since that attack where the district head was killed, there has not been security presence in those communities leading to bandits attack without challenges from any quarters.”

Several attempts were made to get the Niger State Police Command’s spokesman, Wasiu Abiodun, on the phone but they proved abortive.

He, however, sent a terse SMS  saying that he did not have details of the attack.

“Details of the incident still sketchy please,” he stated.

Also attempts to get the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, on the phone to speak failed as he did not pick up his calls.

Similarly, bandits have killed seven persons in Yongia Uambie Tiev in

Ukembrergya/Tswarev ward of the Logo Local Government Area of Benue State.

The incident, according to a community leader, Anawah Joseph, occurred between Tuesday and Wednesday.

Anawah stated that the attackers came in their numbers to attack the community armed with sophisticated weapons.

He said, “These attackers who are armed herders came in groups of up to 500; the Tuesday attack started around 4 pm and lasted till 8 pm, then on Wednesday, they resumed again. I don’t think they came to graze but to attack.

Confirming the attack, the Chairman of the area, Rev Adagbe Jonathan, said, “It happened on  Tuesday and Wednesday with seven  casualties. On Tuesday, two were killed and on Wednesday evening, five were killed in Yongia Ukambie Tiev, Ukembrergya/Tswarev ward.

“The attack was carried out by the herdsmen. Even when I went there on an assessment tour, they were still grazing on the other side of the road, claiming that the area was Taraba State.

“No one could just approach them. I’m even now in Makurdi. I reported to the Special Adviser on Internal Affairs and Security, the Special Adviser, the Bureau of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and the Permanent Secretary of the Bureau of Internal services.

The lawmaker representing Apa State Constituency in the House of Assembly, Abu Umoru, on Thursday, had lamented the incessant attacks on his constituency, saying he had lost count of casualty of the attack.

He said, “The entire Edikpo community has been displaced, Enre Opaha, where I come from, nobody in that community. (In) Odugbo, nobody is there, (same as) Akpete, Ikobi, Akpata, Idiaha, Ochumekwu, and Adiga.

“Everyday they will be burning houses in Akpete. As I speak to you, for three consecutive days, they have been going to Akpete and burning houses after chasing them out of their ancestral homes.

“They (bandits) have been ambushing, killing people – one, two, three to five persons on a daily basis. Right now, I don’t know the number of casualties. There are so many.

Efforts to get the response of the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Catherine Anene, were not successful as she did not pick up calls and did not respond to a text message sent to her.

IG deploys MOPOL

Meanwhile, the Inspection General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has deployed more mobile policemen to the troubled Apa Local Government Area of Benue State.

Disclosing this to our correspondent on Friday, the Chairman of Apa, Ochayi Alidu, said that he received the notification letter from the IGP deploying the cops to the local government area.

Alidu said, “I am in receipt of a letter of deployment of a unit of MOPOL to Apa at the instance of the state Governor, Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia. The unit (comprises) about 62 officers.”

The chairman appreciated President Bola Tinubu and the governor for the prompt response to the plight of the people of the area.

Immigration promises better border patrol with 30 new vehicles

Immigration promises better border patrol with 30 new vehicles

The Nigeria Immigration Service on Friday said it was “rejigging” its border security formations for improved surveillance and patrol.

The newly-appointed Comptroller-General of Immigration, Mrs Kemi Nandap, said this when the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, inaugurated 30 operational vehicles for border surveillance and patrol at the NIS headquarters, Abuja.

“This investment in border security will be complemented with a rejig of our border corps architecture to include agile sector commanders to carry out consistent surveillance and patrol of our borders in line with our core mandate,” Nandap stated.

Her statement follows the reopening of Nigeria’s border with neighbouring Niger Republic amid heightened terrorist activities in the northern part of the country where killings and kidnappings have been occurring frequently.

The nation has witnessed waves of abductions and attacks by suspected bandits and other violent crimes, leading to calls for the establishment of a multi-level policing system, including state police.

According to reports, in Kaduna State alone, terrorists have killed and abducted over 450 persons in the past month.

On March 7, over 280 pupils and teachers of the Government Secondary School and LEA Primary School in Kuriga, Kaduna State, were kidnapped.

A day earlier, the United Nations said at least 200 internally displaced persons were abducted from their camp in the Ngala Local Government Area of Borno State.

On March 9, bandits reportedly kidnapped no fewer than 15 Tsangaya students at the Gidan Bakuso area of the Gada Local Government Area in Sokoto State.

On March 14, at least 16 soldiers were killed while on a peace-keeping mission to curtail clashes between Okuoma and Okoloba communities in Delta State.

On February 20, bandits kidnapped over 26 travellers along the Gusau-Sokoto highway. They were said to have blocked the road around Kwaren Kirya village in the Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State and abducted the travellers from a Toyota bus and a Volkswagen Golf vehicle.

But Nandap emphasised the role of effective border surveillance and patrol in “safeguarding our sovereignty, protecting our citizens, preserving our economic prosperity as well as facilitating regular, safe, and orderly migration.”

She said the 30 surveillance vehicles “represent a concrete investment in our capacity, providing our dedicated officers with the tools needed to carry out their duties.”

She added that the acquisition of the vehicles underscored the service’s unwavering commitment to border security and its determination to stay one step ahead of those who seek to undermine Nigeria’s laws and threaten its safety.

“With enhanced mobility, our border patrol teams will be better equipped to detect and deter illegal activities, including smuggling of migrants, trafficking in persons, and other transnational crimes,” she added.

Nandap thanked Tunji-Ojo for his unwavering support to the NIS “in achieving unprecedented heights of efficiency in migration management and border security.”

Southgate eyes Euros glory, suspends job offers

Gareth Southgate insists he won’t listen to job offers until after Euro 2024 as the England manager slammed speculation linking him to Manchester United as “completely disrespectful” to Erik ten Hag.

Southgate’s current England contract expires in December and he is yet to agree a new deal ahead of his fourth major tournament with the national team.

The 53-year-old is reportedly United’s top target to replace the under-fire Ten Hag if Old Trafford co-owner Jim Ratcliffe decided to sack the Dutchman.

Southgate on Friday said contract talks with the Football Association are on hold, with his full focus on leading England to their first men’s international trophy since the 1966 World Cup.

“I think there are two things from my point of view. One is that I’m the England manager. I’ve got one job, basically, to try and deliver a European Championship,” Southgate said ahead of Saturday’s friendly against Brazil at Wembley.

“And the second thing is Manchester United have a manager and I think it’s always completely disrespectful when there’s any speculation about a manager that’s in place.

“I’m president of the LMA (League Managers’ Association) so I don’t have any time for that sort of thing, really.”

Southgate is said to have a good relationship with Dave Brailsford, who is part of Ratcliffe’s football operations team at United.

He is also on good terms with Newcastle sporting director Dan Ashworth — another potential candidate to move to Old Trafford according to reports.

Southgate’s stock is high after leading England to the 2018 World Cup semi-finals, the European Championship final in 2021 and the World Cup quarter-finals in Qatar a year later.

Irrespective of whether the chance to join United eventually comes up, Southgate said he will not speak to anyone until after the Euros.

“I think I’ve answered this every time I’ve sat with you,” Southgate said. “Yeah, my focus is a European Championship.

“If we did something, a contract, here before everybody would be saying, ‘why are you signing a contract before a Euros where you’ve got to prove yourself?’.

“I’m certainly not going to speak to anybody else ahead of that. I never have.

“I’ve been eight years in the job. I wouldn’t entertain speaking to anybody else when I’m in the job.”

Police foil kidnap attempt on Buruku-Kaduna highway

Police foil kidnap attempt on Buruku-Kaduna highway

The Kaduna State Police Command said its operatives foiled a kidnap attempt on the Buruku-Kaduna highway on Thursday.

The command’s Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Mansir Hassan, said in a statement on Friday in Kaduna that the bandits were forced to retreat by the firepower of the personnel.

“On March 21, at 1300hrs, officers from the 47PMF attached to Buruku Police Station successfully thwarted a kidnapping attempt by bandits along the Buruku-Kaduna highway.

“While conducting a routine crime prevention patrol along the highway, the vigilant PMF personnel spotted bandits near Corner Ugara. Upon sighting the PMF personnel, the bandits opened fire, prompting an immediate response from the officers.

“In a display of remarkable courage and professionalism, the PMF personnel returned fire, effectively neutralizing the threat posed by the armed bandits.

“The exchange of gunfire forced the bandits to retreat into the nearby bush.

“Despite their attempts to evade capture, the  bandits suffered fatal injuries during the confrontation,” he said.

Hassan said the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Audu Ali, commended the bravery and swift action of the mobile policemen in preventing what could have been a tragic incident.

He urged the public to be vigilant and report suspicious activities to the authorities promptly.

Delta bloodbath: Women, children trapped in bush without food -Youth leader

The President of the Youth Wing of the Urhobo Progress Union Worldwide, Blessing Ughere, has expressed concern over the plight of Okuama community residents, particularly women and children taking refuge in the bush without access to food and shelter following the killing of military officers in the area.

He made this known during an interview with ARISETV on Thursday.

He said: “First, I want to commend the effort of the governor of Delta State for having been able to show some signs of responsibility so far. But it seems the Federal Government and the military are not doing the needful as it should be done.

“Deltans are not people who kill people. Let’s clear that position. We do not kill people, and it has never happened in Urhobo land before, where military personnel are killed in our land. it has never happened.

  • The President of the Youth Wing of the Urhobo Progress Union Worldwide, Blessing Ughere, has expressed concern over the plight of Okuama community residents, particularly women and children taking refuge in the bush without access to food and shelter following the killing of military officers in the area.

“Now going to your question, I came here for just one thing, I came here to tell the world that my people, Urhobo youths, women, young persons are in the bush, they don’t have food, they don’t have shelter, they don’t have anything. I was with the IOYC President yesterday, where we together made a statement solidly, telling the world that Ijaw nation and Urhobo nation are not at war. We are not at war.

“What we are asking the government to do is to tell the military to stop going from community to community, since the spokesman of the military has come out yesterday and say they know the people who are involved and they will catch them in no short time, why then go and start raiding every community?

“The Ijaws are suffering the same faith. It’s just that the Okuama of the Urhobo people are more of this faith because it happens in our land. We are calling on the Federal Government to please call on the military to give access to people to come back and live their life while investigation is being done. This is how it is done in international practice, not locking the doors against the investigators. How do we get to know the truth?”

England captain Kane to miss Brazil clash

0
England captain Kane to miss Brazil clash

England captain Harry Kane will miss Saturday’s friendly against Brazil and is “extremely doubtful” to face Belgium next week.

Kane suffered an ankle injury playing for Bayern Munich in their 5-2 win over Darmstadt last weekend and will not be risked for the meeting with Brazil at Wembley.

The former Tottenham striker also faces the possibility of missing Tuesday’s friendly against Belgium at Wembley

That will be the final match before England boss Gareth Southgate names his Euro 2024 squad, although Kane has no worries about his place on the flight to Germany in June.

Ajax midfielder Jordan Henderson and Chelsea forward Cole Palmer remain with the England squad, but they are also sidelined by injuries for the sold-out clash against the Selecao.

Arsenal forward Bukayo Saka withdrew from Southgate’s squad due to injury on Thursday.

“Tomorrow no Harry Kane, no Jordan Henderson, no Cole Palmer,” England boss Southgate said.

“I would say Cole and Hendo have a better chance of Belgium than Harry. He’d be extremely doubtful for that.”

Kane’s absence is a blow but Ollie Watkins and Ivan Toney now have a chance to stake their claim for the role as Euro understudy to England’s record goal-scorer.

Watkins has scored three goals in nine internationals, while Toney’s one England appearance came off the bench against Ukraine this time last year.

The Brentford striker began an eight-month Football Association ban shortly after and was recalled at the first opportunity.

• ’Big opportunity’ –
“Well, that is a decision we will have to make because clearly a nine is a specialist position,” Southgate said when asked how many strikers he would take to the Euros.

“They have different attributes and that would depend a little bit on injury status in other positions in the squad and also having perhaps players that can play more than one role.

“I think both of them are aware that the opportunity is a big one. But they’re both in good form, they’ve both had time with us.

“Ollie’s been with us more recently, of course, and has done well in the games he’s played. He’s had a fabulous season for his club.

“Ivan since he’s come back into Brentford’s team has had the impact we expected him to, so they are two very good players.”

Despite the absentees, England are favourites to beat rebuilding Brazil in their first match under head coach Dorival Junior.

The Selecao have won 10 of their last 11 friendlies against European opposition but are looking to avoid losing four matches in a row since 2001.

“I’m reading that we’ve only beaten Brazil four times out of 26 games, something like that,” Southgate said.

“There are lots of matches against big opponents that we don’t have outstanding records against that this team have managed to beat – Italy twice being an example, Spain.

“So, it’s another opportunity for us to put a marker down, create a little bit more history for these boys.

“But also we’re going to be tested in every aspect of our game, and that’s going to be a great challenge for us.”

Flag change on new England football kit causes uproar

Flag change on new England football kit causes uproar

The US sportswear giant altered the appearance of the Cross — the flag of England — using purple and blue horizontal stripes in what it called a “playful update” to the shirt ahead of Euro 2024, which starts in June.

Nike and the Football Association said the colours on the back of the collar — different from the traditional red cross on a white background — were inspired by the training kit worn by England’s 1966 World Cup winners.

But the decision has led to a furious backlash from some fans and former players, with leading politicians weighing in.

Sunak — a fan of Championship side Southampton — said he “prefers the original” England shirt.

“My general view is that when it comes to our national flags, we shouldn’t mess with them,” he told reporters. “Because they are a source of pride, identity, who we are, and they’re perfect as they are.”

Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer, whose remit includes sport, said the FA and its kit partner had failed to put supporters first.

“Our national heritage –- including St George’s Cross -– brings us together. Toying with it is pointless and unnecessary,” she said on X.

Keir Starmer, the leader of Britain’s main opposition Labour Party and an Arsenal supporter, called on Nike to “reconsider” its decision.

“I’m a big football fan, I go to England games, men and women’s games, and the flag is used by everybody. It is a unifier. It doesn’t need to be changed. We just need to be proud of it,” Starmer told the Sun newspaper.

No intention to offend

In a statement later on Friday, Nike said it “was never its intention to offend” but did not indicate any plans to change the kit design.

“We have been a proud partner of the FA since 2012 and understand the significance and importance of the St George’s Cross and it was never our intention to offend, given what it means to England fans,” it said.

“Together with the FA, the intention was to celebrate the heroes of 1966 and their achievements. The trim on the cuffs takes its cues from the training gear worn by England’s 1966 heroes, with a gradient of blues and reds topped with purple.

“The same colours also feature an interpretation of the flag on the back of the collar.”

England boss Gareth Southgate insisted the controversy had not affected their preparations for Saturday’s friendly with Brazil at Wembley.

“It has not taken anything away from what we’ve been preparing for all day,” Southgate said.

“It’s not been high on my list of priorities, but it depends which bit it is. I don’t know if the debate is about the St George’s flag needs to be on the England shirt because it hasn’t always been.

“The most important thing on the England shirt is our Three Lions because that is an iconic symbol. It is the thing that distinguishes us.

“Then I suppose what you’re asking is, should we be tampering with the cross of St George? If it is not a red cross and a white background, then it’s not a cross of St George anyway, so it is a hard question to answer.”

The FA said it was proud of the kit design, also referencing the 1966 link.

“It is not the first time that different coloured St George’s Cross-inspired designs have been used on England shirts,” said a spokesman.

The debate over the new design comes with British politics in the grip of so-called “culture war” issues, pitting proponents of “traditionalist” values, such as Sunak’s ruling Conservatives, against those with more liberal, “progressive” views.
