Be mindful of EFCC, Benue gov warns LG chairmen

Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, has warned local government chairmen in the state against indulging in financial misappropriation as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission will breathe down on them.

The governor further warned the chairmen against leaving their council area.

Alia gave the warnings on Monday while declaring open a two-day workshop on ‘Responsive Local Government Leadership for Effective Local Government Administration in Benue State.

While admonishing the council chairmen to imbibe accountability, integrity and transparency in the discharge of their duty, the governor said they must not take the Internal Generated Revenue or taxes as personal funds but to strive to increase their IGR to improve on the welfare of their people.

He reminded the council chairmen of their social contract with the people and, as such, charged them to abide with the interests of the people and know what they wanted.

He said, “You must embark on human development, aim high, and let the people know that the system is working.

“Do not let anyone take you by surprise, as you have a big brother, EFCC, who is always beaming a searchlight on you

“Target what our administration is looking for to enable us who are vested with this responsibility to know our social contract with the people and know the depth of service to the people and benefit of democracy.

“The theme speaks to reality, that is, the method of service delivery and management of the third tier of government. It is meant to equip you to understand your roles
The local governments are placed strategically to play a role in administrative processes, and this must be in tandem with our goals.

“See the challenges you are faced with and proffer solution. See how you can make an imprint in the LG system. You have to make the state and stakeholders and everyone involved in the state proud of you. We have given autonomy to the LG system and have plans to open the rural areas to thrive. We have mapped out strategic projects awaiting execution in our LG areas.

“Be at your station and stop parading about. Take this very seriously, be where you must be at the right time. Let the people know you. Let them not just know that you are collecting taxes but let it have an impact on them. Build heaven out of hell in your LG areas. Be the mechanic to good governance. Keep a good record when you are to depart. Give LG people comfort. ”

The Special Adviser, Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Dennis Akura, explained that the workshop was designed not only to familiarise administrators with the intricacies of governance but to equip them with the managerial skills necessary for excellence in their roles.

CBN sells $10,000 to BDC at N1,251/$1

The Central Bank of Nigeria has issued a circular to Bureau De Change operators informing them of the sale of $10,000 to each BDC at a rate of N1,251/$1.

This was contained in a circular made available to According Online and signed by the bank’s Director, Trade and Exchange Department, Dr Hassan Mahmud, on Monday.

The apex bank directed each BDC to sell the dollars to eligible customers at a rate not exceeding 1.5 per cent above the purchase price, implying that each BDC is not expected to sell above N1,269/$1.

The According reported that the CBN announced its decision to sell foreign exchange worth $20,000 to each eligible Bureau De Change operator across the country in February.

This is coming more than two years after the former CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, stopped the sales of foreign exchange to BDC operators in that segment of the forex market.

The document read, “We refer to our letter to you referenced TED/DIR/CON/GOM/001/071 in respect of the above subject wherein the CB approved a second tranche of sale of FX to eligible BDCs.

“We write to inform you of the sale of $10,000 to each BDC at the rate of N1,251/$1. The BDCs are to sell to eligible end users at a spread of not mora than 1.5 per cent above the purchase price.”

This confirms a resumption of the sale of dollars to BDC operators after a protracted period of ban by the central bank in 2021.

Mbappe fires France warning after Germany friendly defeat

France captain Kylian Mbappe said his team’s friendly loss to Germany at the weekend should serve as a warning going into Euro 2024, for which Les Bleus are one of the leading contenders.

“We need to be aware that if we play like that in the big matches that lie ahead of us, we are setting ourselves up for major disappointment,” Mbappe said on Monday, following Saturday’s 2-0 defeat against the European Championship hosts in Lyon.

Germany took the lead through a Florian Wirtz strike after just eight seconds, with Kai Havertz scoring their second goal shortly after half-time.

It was just France’s second defeat since they lost the 2022 World Cup final on penalties to Argentina in Qatar — the other was a 2-1 reverse in a friendly away to Germany last September.

“Now that game is over with and our objective is to show a reaction. We need to be aware that we didn’t play well enough,” added Mbappe, who was speaking in Marseille, where France will face Chile in another friendly on Tuesday.

Les Bleus have reached three finals out of the last four major tournaments, European Championships and World Cups combined.

They also won the UEFA Nations League in 2021, and are being tipped as the favourites for the Euro alongside a strong England side.

Paris Saint-Germain star Mbappe was keen to point out that France won just once in their six games leading into the last World Cup, before going on to reach the final of that competition.

In contrast they came into the last Euro in 2021 in excellent form, only to go out in the last 16 on penalties to Switzerland.

“There have been tournaments where in the matches we have played beforehand we have taken beatings but then have played well in the competitions themselves.

“There have also been competitions where we won the friendly games in the build-up but then ended up being knocked out and going home early,” said Mbappe, who won his 76th cap against Germany aged just 25.

“The friendly matches give indications but not the whole truth. The proof of that is that we have lost twice to the Germans in friendly games but I have never lost to them in a competitive match.”

France are in a group with the Netherlands and Austria at the upcoming Euro, which will take place in Germany from June 14 to July 14.

They will also be alongside the winner of Tuesday’s decisive qualifying play-off between Wales and Poland.

Mbappe also said he expected to be jeered by the crowd in Marseille, with France playing in the home stadium of PSG’s bitter rivals.

“It doesn’t matter what kind of welcome I get. I will still give my best,” he said.

“To be honest, I would understand if I were whistled.”

He will return to Marseille with PSG for a league game this coming weekend.

Six of 137 rescued Kaduna schoolchildren hospitalised

Six of 137 rescued Kaduna schoolchildren hospitalised

Six out of the 137 rescued schoolchildren of the Government Secondary School, Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State, were said to have been hospitalised at the Army medical facility, Dallet Barracks, Kawo, Kaduna.

The General Officer Commanding 1 Division,  Major-Gen. Mayirenso Saraso, made this known while presenting the rescued schoolchildren to Governor Uba Sani at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim Government House in the state capital on Monday.

The GOC said those currently receiving medical attention at their facility are five females and one male student.

He said that as soon as they are medically fit, they would be handed over to the state government.

This was as the state governor, Sani cautioned those he described as “merchants of conflicts” over the wrong permutation on how the 137 schoolchildren were rescued by the Army.

The governor also warned against politicising issues of security, noting that doing so would endanger the lives and property of Nigerians.

Speaking further, Saraso insisted that in all, 137 students and staff were abducted by the terrorists on March 7, 2024, bringing the total number of those abducted to 138 while regretting that the staff died in captivity.

Although he said no ransom was paid, the GOC explained that through “the sustained and coordinated application of both kinetic and non-kinetic efforts” by the security agencies under the strategic guidance of  President Bola Tinubu, through the Office of the National Security Adviser, the abducted Kuriga schoolchildren were rescued in the early hours of Sunday after spending about 16 days in captivity.

He added that the students were initially received and administered first aid at the Nigerian Army Troops Forward Operating Base Dandadau in Zamfara State before being conveyed from there under escort to Kaduna.

He said, “We successfully freed 137, but you will discover that six of them are not presently with us here. They are being attended to medically in our facility at Darlet Barracks – one male with five female students who have been hospitalised.

“His Excellency visited them last night, and he saw all the students, including those lying on hospital beds. So, those six when eventually discharged; when they get better, will join their 131 colleagues who are here physically present to complete the figure of 137.

“In all, there were 137 children and one staff member making 138 persons altogether that were abducted from the co-located schools on the ill-fated day.

“But unfortunately, the staff member, Mr Abubakar, is not here with us today because he died while in captivity.

“Consequently, there are here at present, a total of 137 students of the Govt Secondary and LEA Primary Schools Kuriga in Chikun LGA of Kaduna State who were successfully rescued from captivity around Dansadau Forest in Zamfara State and safely brought back to Kaduna.

“The breakdown of the figure of the rescued children shows that there are 76 females and 61 males, making the total of 137 together (less the teacher that died while in captivity).”

The governor, while receiving the schoolchildren, decried the way issues of security were being politicised in the country.

He also praised the efforts of President Bola Tinubu, who, according to him, stood firmly by the state government from day one when the incident happened.

While cautioning ‘the merchant of conflicts,’ the governor said what was important to the state government “is that the abducted schoolchildren were rescued unhurt.”

The governor warned the so-called merchant of conflicts as well as the media to desist from passing wrong insinuations on how the schoolchildren were rescued.

He said, “I want to appreciate our children who are here with us and are in high spirits. I want to make it very clear to all of us that from the very day that our children were unfortunately abducted from their school in the Kuriga community, President Bola Tinubu has been with us from day one.

“He ensured that the security should return our children home safely. I want to thank the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, for his able leadership and all the service chiefs and all security agencies for their respective contributions and organised efforts.

“I want to appreciate many Nigerians who prayed day and night for the release of the children, and today, God has answered our prayers.

“I also want to caution insecurity merchants and conflict merchants in Nigeria to be cautious with their utterances because, before the release of our children, a lot of people have been coming with a lot of permutation about how these children were released and what happened.

“The important thing for us in Kaduna is that the children are here with us. This is more important. As a government,  it is to protect the life and property of our citizens.

“And under my government, the Kaduna State will continue to prioritise our security because security is the number one agenda of our government.

“We should not politicise the issue of insecurity in Nigeria. It is not good to undermine the efforts of security agencies in Nigeria.

“I want to caution the media and some elements in the society about the permutation of the school children, in my own opinion it is just to celebrate their release.

“We are all happy because we had 16 days of sleepless nights, but today we are happy the children are back and I want to emphasise that we will continue to make security efforts so that all our Local Government Areas(LGAs) and Communities are saved.”

Rivers police kill wanted cult leader

The police in Rivers State on Monday gunned down the commander of a dreaded cult group called ‘Greenlanders’ during a shootout in the Owube Kingdom in Ahoada West Local Government Area of the state.

The cult commander identified as Izuma David Odiereke, a. k. a ‘Solution’ has been on the wanted list of the police for nearly 10 years.

When operatives raided his camp located in a forest in the area, he reportedly opened fire and tried to escape but was subdued by superior firepower at about 4 am on Monday.

Briefing newsmen at the Area Command, the state Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, described the cult commander as a serial killer.

He said, “His reign ended when the command took men to his camp at Api Forest between Odiereke Ubie and Joinkarama 4 in Ahoada West LGA.

“Attempts were made to capture him three days ago, but he escaped. We continued to lay siege on him.

“We have been having a series of attacks from this so-called General Odiereke that has just been killed alias solution.

“He has been on the wanted list since 2016. He has been a serial killer. A lot of people have died at his hands.

“Nobody can fish. Nobody can go to the farm because of this man.  He is kind of a kid in the jungle. He comes to town in Ahoada West in Ibiza Clan, to be precise.

“The clan and the community had been deserted because anybody who comes around, he kills and escapes at will. He was doing everything he wanted.

“We are so happy that today, officers of the command led by the DOOR went after him, and luckily for us, they got him. So this is the end of the era of ‘General Solution’.

CP Disu disclosed that the killed cult kingpin was responsible for the death of the paramount ruler in the area in February this year, among about nine notable names murdered by his gang.

He commended operatives of the Ahoada Area Command and Division for their dedication and commitment to the fight against crime and criminality and urged them not to rest on their laurels.

Meanwhile, there was a crowd of natives of both Ahoada East and West LGA who trooped out to cheer the Commissioner of Police and his team on the feat achieved.

Speaking to newsmen, the Chairman of Ahoada East LGA, Ben Eke, expressed happiness, saying, “Even if he is from Ahoada West and killed in Ahoada West, the criminality will reduce in my local government.”

Similarly, Seji Ebenezer, Paramount Ruler of the Owube community, where the cult leader hails from, said, “The community is so excited. The young man has been terrorising the community.

“He is a serial killer, kidnapper, and notorious cultist.”
