10 wounded in fresh Russian missile attack on Kyiv

0

Ten people including a teenage girl were wounded Monday after Ukrainian air defence systems downed two Russian missiles over the capital, sending metal debris crashing to the ground.

Authorities in the eastern Kharkiv region also announced a 65-year-old man had died in the courtyard of his home during a bout of Russian shelling.

AFP journalists in Kyiv saw emergency workers in helmets clearing concrete and bent metal from one building ripped open during the attack, the third aerial bombardment of the capital in just five days.

Moscow has escalated its aerial attacks on Kyiv, targeting key infrastructure in the wake of fatal Ukrainian bombardments on Russian border regions.

AFP reporters heard several explosions and air raid sirens in Kyiv almost simultaneously at around 10:30 am (0830 GMT) as officials urged residents to take shelter.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said the attack showed again that Ukraine needed better air defence systems from its allies.

“It means safety for our cities and saved human lives. All of us in the world who respect and protect life need to stop this terror,” he wrote on social media.

Emergency services said 10 people were wounded, while Kyiv’s Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the teenager was among those hospitalised, and two pregnant women suffered acute stress reactions.

Oksana, a Kyiv resident, was at work when she first heard the air raid sirens and then a blast.

“Before I could do anything, the first explosion hit,” she told AFP. “There was a cloud of dust, smashed cars, windows, everything.”

The head of Kyiv’s military administration, Sergiy Popko, said Russia had attacked with two ballistic missiles launched from the annexed Crimean peninsula.

Attack on Russian power plant

He said both had been shot down but falling debris crashed onto several central districts. Officials said an arts academy building and a gym were damaged.

“Again this morning Russia is attacking Ukraine with hypersonic missiles,” the US ambassador to Ukraine, Bridget Brink, wrote on social media.

“Ukraine needs our assistance now. There is not a moment to lose,” she added, in reference to a $60 billion military aid package held up in the US Congress.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba posted footage purporting to show school children running to a shelter at the time of the attack.

“This is a reminder that Ukraine urgently requires more air defence, particularly Patriot systems and missiles capable of repelling any Russian attack,” he wrote.

The Kyiv attack came after almost a dozen people were wounded in a Russian drone strike on southern Ukraine overnight, and a fire broke out at a major Russian power plant following a Ukrainian drone attack.

Kyiv said Russian drones had hit the southern regions of Mykolaiv and Odesa, leaving residents without electricity in parts of the Black Sea territory.

In Russia, a fire broke out at a power plant in the southern region of Rostov, the local governor said, after a wave of Ukrainian drone attacks in the area.

Two power units at the Novocherkassk power station, one of the largest in southwest Russia, were taken offline, Governor Vasily Golubev said on social media.

The Rostov region borders Ukraine and the regional capital is home to Russia’s military command headquarters for its offensive against Kyiv.

Senegal’s Bassirou Faye steps into presidential spotlight

0

From a Dakar prison to the presidency, Senegal’s anti-establishment, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, embodies the winning charisma of his mentor and opposition figurehead Ousmane Sonko, who endorsed him as his replacement.

“Bassirou is me,” said Sonko of his number two, who at the age of 44 is set to become Senegal’s youngest head of state after his main rival in the presidential election recognised his victory on Monday.

The former tax inspector has risen in the shadow of the popular firebrand Sonko, who endorsed Faye after he was barred from standing in Sunday’s presidential race.

Released from prison on March 14, the allies embarked on a whirlwind campaign tour to the delight of overjoyed crowds, who chanted “Sonko mooy Diomaye, Diomaye mooy Sonko”, or “Sonko is Diomaye, Diomaye is Sonko”.

Along the trail, Faye who has never held elected office promised the Senegalese profound change and left-wing pan-Africanism.

Pitching himself as part of a new generation of politicians, he believes in national sovereignty, a fairer distribution of wealth, and reform of what he sees as a corrupt justice system.

He also vows to renegotiate oil and fishing contracts and says he is not afraid of creating a new national currency in lieu of the CFA franc — a measure denounced by his government opponent for president Amadou Ba.

Faye’s rivals accuse him of leading a group of “adventurers” willing to pursue policies that are dangerous for the country.

‘Two sides of same coin’

Coming from a modest rural background, Faye, a Muslim who appeared at his final rally alongside his two wives clad in his trademark wide-sleeved boubou robe, followed in Sonko’s footsteps by sitting Senegal’s administration and magistrate exams, before taking over as head of a trade union from Sonko.

Together, they founded the Pastef political party in 2014, which authorities dissolved last year.

“They are two sides of the same coin with two different styles,” said Moustapha Sarr, a trainer of former Pastef activists.

But standing tall above the sunroof of his campaign vehicle, Faye emerged from Sonko’s shadow in a bid to win the hearts and minds of his mentor’s fans.

“Of course, we would have preferred (the candidate) to be Ousmane Sonko. But I have confidence in Diomaye because Sonko put his trust in him,” said Mourtalla Diouf, 27, from the southern Casamance region.

“They share the same project.”

Faye has even named one of his sons Ousmane in honour of his political companion.

The two also spent time together in the same prison.

In April last year, Faye was charged with several offences, including contempt of court, after broadcasting a message critical of the judiciary in legal cases against Sonko.

Sonko joined Faye in prison in July on charges including calling for insurrection.

Several hundred opposition members have been arrested since 2021 when Sonko began his bitter standoff with the state that sparked deadly unrest.

The turmoil played a role in outgoing President Macky Sall’s decision to postpone the election, plunging the West African country into its worst political crisis in decades.

“President, you often say that I am stubborn, we never get along, but we are always together,” Faye said addressing Sonko during a press conference a day after their release under an amnesty law.

Immediately after casting his vote on Sunday, he called on the Senegalese people to “calm down” and “return once and for all to the serenity that has been seriously disrupted in recent months and years”.

Man slumps, dies during fight in Kwara

0

A man identified as Usman Abubakar reportedly died during a fight that occurred at Isale Koko, Ojagboro area, Ilorin in Ilorin East Local Government Area of Kwara State.

The incident, which happened last Wednesday and claimed the life of the deceased, was a result of the combat between him (the deceased) and another man identified as one Omotosho Jimoh of Elekoyangan area, Oke-Suna, Ilorin, who is now at large.

The incident, according to the police, was a result of a minor issue that degenerated into combat and later led to the death of Usman.

A statement by the state Police Public Relations Officer read,  “The Kwara State Police Command is saddened to report a tragic incident of culpable homicide which occurred on March 20, 2024, in Ilorin.

“At about 2030hrs on March 20, 2024, Mr. Adebayo Ahmed, a resident of Isale Koko, Ojagboro, Ilorin, reported a distressing incident involving his son, Usman Abubakar.

“It was reported that on the same day, around 1930hrs, Usman engaged in hand-to-hand combat with one Omotosho Jimoh of Elekoyankan Area, Oke-suna, Ilorin, over a minor issue.

“Tragically, during the altercation, Usman Abubakar slumped and was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead by medical personnel.

“Immediately, the scene of the crime was visited, and the necessary documentation was carried out. However, the family of the deceased has declined to release the body for autopsy, insisting on burial according to Islamic rites.

“Presently, the suspect, Omotosho Jimoh, is at large. The Kwara State Police Command has initiated a preliminary investigation into the matter, and efforts are underway to apprehend the suspect and ascertain the full circumstances surrounding this unfortunate incident.”

Ejire-Adeyemi said the Command assured the public that efforts were being made to bring the perpetrators to justice.

In March 2023, a male adult slumped and died during an argument over a parking space at a supermarket on Admiralty Way in the Lekki area of Lagos State.

Operatives of the Edo State Police Command, in October 2023, arrested a 21-year-old man identified as Ononomeh Badamasi over the circumstances surrounding the death of a 52-year-old man, Orumidayo Awolowo, who went to demand money owed him.

The Lagos State Police Command also confirmed last month that a man, Adebayo Adeseko, and his girlfriend, Sarah Adesanya, died after fighting in their apartment.

Trump wins lifeline in fraud case after court slashes crippling bond demand

0

Donald Trump was thrown a huge lifeline Monday when an appeals court slashed what could have been a crippling demand for a nearly half-billion-dollar bond payment and also gave him 10 more days to pay.

The Republican presidential candidate got the unexpectedly positive news about his New York civil fraud case while he was sitting in court for another case – a hearing in his upcoming criminal trial over paying hush money to a porn star.

Trump had been facing a Monday deadline to pay the huge original bond pending an appeal against a judge’s decision that he is liable for fraudulently conspiring to inflate his net worth.

Trump had made clear he was unable to find the $454 million and he risked seeing New York state confiscate parts of his property empire in response. Now with Monday’s decision, he will have 10 more days to pay just $175 million.

Writing on his Truth Social app, Trump said he would “abide by the decision of the Appellate Division and post either a bond, equivalent securities, or cash.”

The 77-year-old Republican began his day of twin legal crises in a Manhattan courtroom at a hearing to set a new date for his trial over payments he made on the eve of the 2016 presidential election to make sure porn star Stormy Daniels did not publicize a sexual encounter.

“This is a witch hunt,” Trump told reporters before walking into court.

The hush money trial had been scheduled to begin on Monday but was delayed at the last minute because tens of thousands of pages of potential evidence were belatedly produced by prosecutors.

The Manhattan district attorney has told Judge Juan Merchan he would accept a delay of up to 30 days for the start of the trial while lawyers for Trump have asked for at least three months.

– ‘Election interference’ –

On Truth Social, Trump denounced both cases as a politically motivated attack ahead of the November 5 presidential election when he will likely again face incumbent Democrat Joe Biden.

“These are Rigged cases, all coordinated by the White House and DOJ for purposes of Election Interference,” Trump wrote. “No crime. Our Country is CORRUPT!”

Trump regularly rails against a judicial system he claims is “fixed” against him.

He has said that New York Attorney General Letitia James – who is Black – is “racist,” and accused Judge Arthur Engeron in the civil fraud case of being “crooked.”

Trump got some positive financial news last week when it was announced that Truth Social would finally go public through a merger, a transaction that could net him billions of dollars.

He cannot tap into the funds for six months, but it potentially could help him secure a bond.

However, in case of non-payment, James could still order a freeze on his bank accounts, or move to seize some of his New York properties.

– Seeking more delays –

Trump’s lawyers have pursued every avenue to delay his many trials – if possible until after the presidential vote.

In the trial involving Stormy Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, Trump is accused of illegally using campaign funds to secure her silence about an alleged sexual encounter back in 2006.

If she’d spoken out, the fallout could have been ruinous for Trump’s presidential hopes, coming right on the heels of another scandal over the married businessman’s boasting, caught on tape, that as a celebrity he was freely able to “grab” women by their genitals.

Trump is accused of making the hush money payments in an illegal manner involving falsification of business records.

The former president potentially could face a prison sentence of up to four years if convicted.

Tuberculosis curable, treatment free in Enugu -Commissioner

0

The Enugu State Commissioner for Health, Prof Ikechukwu Obi, says that tuberculosis is curable and its treatment is free in Enugu State.

He also noted that the state recorded 2,496 confirmed cases of Tuberculosis in 2022.

Obi, who disclosed this at a press conference to mark the 2024 World Tuberculosis Day in the state, revealed that data for 2023 is still being collated, appealing to residents with persistent coughs to go to any nearby healthcare facility for screen and treatment.

While noting that treatment of tuberculosis is completely free, the health commissioner said the state is providing TB Services in 597 Health facilities across the state.

Obi said the theme of this year’s World Tuberculosis Day 2024, is “Yes, We Can End TB,” adding that it is celebrated globally on March 24 annually.

According to the World Health Organisation, Tuberculosis is an infectious disease usually caused by mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) bacteria.

Tuberculosis generally affects the lungs called pulmonary tuberculosis. It can also affect other parts of the body extrapulmonary tuberculosis.

However, some of the infections remain as latent tuberculosis with no symptoms. About 10 per cent of the latent infection progresses to active disease and can kill if left untreated.

Addressing reporters, Obi explained that Tuberculosis remains a global public health problem, with developing countries bearing the highest burden.

“Nigeria is first in Africa and sixth in the world among countries with highest TB burden. In 2022, an estimated 10.6 million people developed active TB globally,” he said.

Obi, however, explained that symptoms of active TB are, “Chronic cough with blood containing mucus, Fever, Night sweats and Weight loss,” however, he noted that infections of other parts of the body can cause a wide range of symptoms.

“Tuberculosis is spread from one person to another through the air when people have active TB in their lungs cough, spit, speak, or sneeze. People with latent infection do not spread the diseases. Active infection occurs more in people with HIV/AIDS and smokers.”

The health commissioner said diagnosis of TB “is based on chest x-ray, microscopy, genexpert and culture of fluids.

“Latent TB can be diagnosed on tuberculin skin tests or blood tests,” while prevention of tuberculosis “is through health education (primary level of prevention), screening those with high risk, early detection and treatment of cases, and vaccination with BCG.”

“In all, tuberculosis is curable,” he said, adding “tuberculosis treatment is free. Thanks to the Global fund, Federal Ministry of Health, Enugu state ministry, and all TB supporting partners sponsoring the services. If you have any of the above symptoms, go to any health facility around you,” he advised.

No ransom paid for Kaduna school children’s release

0

The Federal Government, on Monday, said no ransom was paid for the release of 137 pupils kidnapped from Kuriga, Chikun Local Government Area, Kaduna State.

“In keeping with the commitment of Mr President, no ransom was paid,” the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, told journalists after the Federal Executive Council meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

According to Idris, the president appreciated the role of the security services in the safe return of the abductees, vowing that all those involved in the abduction would be fished out and punished.

On March 6, at the pupils were kidnapped when terrorists on motorcycles stormed their school, whisking them away in an operation that drew condemnation and outrage from the Presidency and the global community, including the UN children’s welfare agency UNICEF.

However, a statement issued on Sunday by the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba, said 137 pupils were rescued, contrary to reports of 287.

According to Buba, the pupils were rescued through a joint effort of the military and local authorities in Zamfara State in the early hours of Sunday.

At the time, the Kaduna-based Muslim cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, had offered to dialogue with terrorists who abducted the school children from Kuriga.

Addressing questions raised about the FG engaging cleric, the minister said, “What I can tell you is that the government will stop at nothing to get any kind of information that is required to solve our problems.

“Sheikh Gumi or any other individual for that matter is not above the law. If you have suggestions that are constructive enough for security agencies to take, they will take it.

“But if they think that he is also making some statements that appear to be reckless, he will also be reprimanded.”

Osun driver arrested for attempted rape of teenage passenger

0

The Amotekun Corps in Osun State, on Monday, said a commercial driver, Taofeek Oyekola, aged 26, was arrested for allegedly using a magic ring to lure a teenager to his residence.

The suspect was reportedly said to have attempted to rape her at his residence in Osogbo, the state capital.

A statement on Monday by Osun Amotekun spokesperson, Idowu Yusuf, said the 15-year-old girl (name withheld) boarded an intra-city minibus of Oyekola at Oja Oba, Osogbo going toward Ilesa Garage Area on Saturday when the driver allegedly used a voodoo ring he had on his finger to hit the victim.

According to the statement, the victim, while narrating her ordeal, said shortly after the driver used the ring to hit her, she lost her senses and was obeying almost every instruction Oyekola was giving her.

“The victim was the only passenger at the time. The suspect brought a ring and wore it on his finger, and touched the victim, which made the victim lose her memory. The suspect thereafter drove the victim to his residence at Ita-Olookan, Osogbo. On getting to the residence, Oyekola asked her to undress, but the victim refused.

“He then forcefully pushed the victim on a three-seater couch and attempted to rape her. The victim pleaded with him to let her go and that she would come back later, but the suspect did not oblige. He later brought out an axe and threatened to cut her into pieces and sell her body parts. He also brought out a concoction, which he licked and ordered the victim to go to her house and bring all her belongings to live with him.

“He brought out different charms and told the girl to swear to an oath that she would come back if he allowed her to leave. The driver later followed the victim to her house on a motorcycle to assist in bringing her belongings.

“It was when the victim got down from the motorcycle that she raised alarm, which made members of Community Security Awareness Initiative come to her aid. They got the suspect arrested and handed him over to Amotekun,” the statement partly read.

Commenting, the State Corps Commander of Osun Amotekun, Brig. Gen. Bashir Adewinmbi (retd.), said his men took the suspects to custody on Saturday for investigation, adding that Oyekola admitted committing the crime.

He further said, “The suspect has been transferred to the National Agency For Prohibition On Trafficking In Person (NAPTIP) Headquarters Osogbo for further interrogation and prosecution.”
