Okuama: Elders, community leaders have obligation to expose culprits

0

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) Abuja has urged elders ànd community leaders of Okuama, in Delta state to expose all those involved in the gruesome killing of military personnel.

The Director of Defence Media Operations (DDMO) Maj-Gen Edward Buba who stated this on Thursday noted that the armed forces is  bent on sustaining the winning ways of “our operational engagements as demonstrated with the recent rescue of 16  and 137  hostages  in Sokoto and Kaduna States, respectively.

Buba stated that the rescue of these hostages is indicative of a better understanding of the dynamics of what “we are dealing with ,and to address the issue in a much safer manner”.

He pointed out that the rescue operations was based on collaboration between the military  working with local authorities and government agencies across the country, in a coordinated approach.

“The success demonstrates the  unwavering commitment of the armed forces to secure and protect the citizens against harm and acts of terror.

“The pressure of military operations created a significant level of distress both for the terrorist and the children. Given the situation, troops  line of interest was the children. The level of  distressed created by the children was sufficient enough for troops to exploit in their rescue. Additionally, cursory operations in the general areas  by troops culminated in the neutralization of several terrorist leaders and commanders in OP HADARIN DAJI theatre of operation.

“On the flip side, we must never allow the incident that occurred in Delta State that led to the killing of  17 soldiers that were  buried on 27 March 2024 to ever happen again. The armed forces is a force for stability that employs both kinetic and non-kinetic measures to achieve the desired end state.

“Prior to the ugly incident, the military had constructed several civic projects in Delta State as a sign of good will. For instance, the construction of Multipurpose Hall and Borehole Projects in Patani LGA and Medical Outreach at Aladja Community in Udu LGA all in Delta State, among several others. Needless to mention, the elders and community leaders have an obligation to expose these wanted persons,” he stated.

Gen. Buba added,”Nevertheless, troops  would continue with their efforts  until the culprits are found ,arrested, tried, and brought to justice by Nigerian law.

“The banner of eight wanted persons involved with the killing including a woman is hereby released. Accordingly, it is necessary to state that citizens are our first line of intelligence and must rise to the occasion in honour of their nation.”

He revealed that in the past one week troops killed 212 and arrested 252 persons, among others.

He stated,”Meanwhile, during the week under review. Troops neutralised  212 and arrested 252 persons. Troops also arrested 29 perpetrators of oil theft and rescued 244 kidnapped hostages. In the SS, troops denied the oil theft of the estimated sum of One Billion Fifty Million Seven and Fifteen Thousand Two Hundred and Sixty Naira (N1,050,715,260.00) only.

“Furthermore, troops recovered 223 assorted weapons and 2,756 assorted ammunition. The breakdown as follows: 3 M56 rifles, 115 AK47 rifles, 3 PKT gun, 24 locally fabricated gun, 36 dane guns, 7 locally fabricated pistols, one fabricated revolver pistol, 3 locally made single barrel guns, 2 hand grenades and one locally made explosive.

“Others are: 1,716 rounds of 7.62mm special ammo, 494 rounds of 7.62mm NATO, 60 rounds of 7.62 x 25mm ammo, 290 rounds of 7.62 x 54mm ammo, 81 rounds of 9mm ammo, 2 live cartridges, 16 magazines, 3 M56 rifles magazines, one HH radio, 5 vehicles, 14 motorcycles, 15 mobile phones and the sum of N857,960.00 amongst other items.

“Troops in the Niger Delta area discovered and destroyed 102 dugout pits, 41 boats, 36 storage tanks and 8 vehicles. Other items recovered incl 39 cooking ovens, 6 pumping machines and 61 illegal refining sites. Troops recovered 944,700 litres of stolen crude oil, 171,060 litres of illegally refined AGO and 1,500 litres of DPK.”

He added,”The foregoing indicates that troops are weathering the storm through offensive posture and improved understanding of modus operandi of the adversary. Accordingly,  we are doing our best to rescue other hostages in terrorist captivity.

“Troops would also continue to elimination threats posed by these terrorist and their cohorts. However, citizens should remember that they are our first line of intelligence. Therefore, as citizens, we have a collective responsibility of doing right.”

UCH denies owing IBEDC N495m

0

University College Hospital, Ibadan, says it did not owe the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company a N495m bill, as being insinuated.

UCH’s Public Relations Officer, Mrs Funmilayo Adetuyibi, stated this in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday in Ibadan.

NAN reports that IBEDC had disconnected power supply to UCH due to what it called accumulated bills of N495m, thus throwing the facility into darkness.

Adetuyibi, however, said that it was not true that the hospital had an accumulated bill of N495m over the last three years.

She said that the present UCH administration, led by Prof. Jesse Otegbayo, assumed office on March 1, 2019, and inherited over N27m as of February 27, 2019, adding that it had since ensured the monthly payment of bills brought by IBEDC.

According to her, the UCH management has also been settling the backlog of bills inherited from previous administrations.

“This management has had meetings with the IBEDC management on several occasions.

“Aside that, a payment plan on how to offset the backlog of the outstanding debt has been forwarded to both the consultant of IBEDC and the regional head of IBEDC.

“This payment plan was rejected by IBEDC. They insisted that first payment of N250m should be made within three months.

“This management’s catchphrase is ‘patients’ comfort and staff welfare.’ In essence, the issue of power supply and water supply to the hospital is critical to our operations.

“While we can say that we have outstanding bills to settle with the IBEDC, the hospital management has left no stone unturned in our proactive approach in making sure our teeming patients have access to adequate medical care at all times,” she said.

Adetuyibi denied the report that the hospital usually spent N160 million on diesel on a monthly basis, adding that only about N15m to N17m was being expended on diesel per month.

She also said that IBEDC had never given 24-hour power supply to UCH, according to the records of the hospital’s internal audit department.

“The narrative of patients’ relations buying sachet water does not arise at all. Even though the hospital does not have optimal water supply due to power outage, we rely on the generator to pump water.

“The hospital has only 45 generators. Out of these 45 generators, some are due for servicing while some are due for replacement,” she said.

Adetuyibi further stated that the hospital’s management had also made available solar inverters in some areas, including all out-patient clinics, Accident and Emergency Department, Endoscopy Suites, ECG Suites, Staff Clinic, Owena Dialysis Ward, and the Medical Microbiology Department, among others.

“As stated earlier, the contention we have with IBEDC is the old bill inherited by this current administration.
“We paid N50 million in January 2024, N55 million in February 2024 and N45 million in March 2024,” she said.

The public relations officer added that IBEDC was insisting that the hospital must pay the inherited bills, whereas it (UCH) had been settling the old bills along with current bills.

She said the management had appealed to the electricity distribution company on several occasions not to charge UCH on commercial rates because it renders social services.

“But our appeals have not had the ears of the company.

“However, in order to mitigate the effect of power outages, the hospital has set up an energy committee.
“The committee is responsible for raising funds to pay electricity bills and providing solar-powered energy to other service areas in the hospital.

“Aside that, the energy committee is charged with finding lasting solution, in the short and long term, to the energy problem.

“We plead with well-meaning individuals, corporate organisations, and the international community at large to come to the aid of the hospital.

“UCH is a national heritage; our collective legacy, and the onus of maintaining it lies on us all,” Adetuyibi said.

Address growing security challenges, NGE urges govts

0

The Nigerian Guild of Editors has urged the government at all levels to step up efforts in addressing growing security challenges across the country.

This is contained in a communique issued and signed by the NGE President, Mr Eze Anaba, and the General Secretary, Dr. Iyobosa Uwugiaren, after the forum’s Standing Committee Meeting held in Enugu, over the weekend, a copy of which was made available to The According on Wednesday.

The guild described the recent release of students of LEA Primary School and Government Secondary School in Kuriga, Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State, as a good development.

“The Guild congratulated the Office of the National Security Adviser, Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State and security agencies for their roles in securing the release of the students – after three weeks in the kidnappers’ captivity,’’ the statement read.

The guild also called on the Federal Government to speak out on the Editor of FirstNews Newspaper, Segun Olatunji, who was abducted from his Lagos home by some men in military uniform.

It added, ‘’The Guild, which demanded the immediate release of the editor, said that any publication by the media if believed or suspected to be false, should be interrogated and tested through the legal process.

‘’The editors condemned how the editor was abducted, saying such action had no place in a democracy, especially under the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led government, which has consistently promised to be guided by the rule of law in all his actions, policies and programmes.

‘’The media/journalists must be allowed to continue to operate in an atmosphere conducive to the performance of their constitutional duty of holding government accountable to the people.

‘’Government or security agencies must not be perceived to be doing anything to the contrary, or attempting to stifle the media under a democratic government.”

The guild described the recent ambush and killing of 17 military personnel in the Okuama community, in Delta State, and the aftermath of the alleged military’s revenge as disheartening.

It called on the Federal Government to dig deep into the killing of soldiers in Okuama, and unravel the ‘’real circumstances’’ in which the incident and its aftermath occurred, with a view to bringing those indicted to book and preventing a recurrence.

While noting the rising cost of living in the country, which saw Nigeria’s headline inflation rate increase from 29.90 per cent in January to 31.70 per cent in February, the editors attributed the current harsh economic space to the worsening security situation, removal of subsidy on petrol, and the devaluation of the Naira, following the unifying of exchange rates.

The communique added, ‘’The Guild observed measures by the Central Bank of Nigeria to reverse the falling value of the Naira, and urged it to ensure the results are long-term and not temporary.

‘’The professional body also acknowledged initiatives by the government at various levels to reduce the hardship in the country – through various palliatives and intervention schemes.

‘’And said that such measures should not be beneficial only in the short-term, hoping that government policies, in the long run, will make life easier for the people.’’

The guild, which commended the mass media for their resilience – amidst the harsh economic realities of the times, called on journalists to continue to perform their responsibilities with a sense of professionalism.

‘’In the face of the nation’s security challenges and tough economic ecosystem, the Guild urged journalists to be circumspect, and not sacrifice truthfulness in their reportage.

‘’The media must continue to carry out their responsibilities with a sense of nationalism, and be careful not to inadvertently give stimulus to terrorists/bandits in their reportage,’’ the editors added.

Group warns against media trial

0

A Northern-based group, the Concerned Civil Society Network, has expressed concern over the fate of the detained Publisher of Kaduna-based Desert Herald Newspaper, Tukur Mamu, in the custody of the Department of State Services.

The organisation also decried the media trial of Mamu, noting that the “Nigerian Sanctions Committee lacked the statutory mandate to pronounce on, and to designate him (Mamu) as terrorists’ financier.”

The Federal Government had recently unveiled the identity of 15 entities, including nine individuals, among them, Mamu and six Bureau De Change operators and firms, allegedly involved in terrorism financing.

Details of the development were revealed by the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit, in an email sent to The According entitled “Designation of Individuals and Entities for March 18, 2024.”

Mamu’s counsel kicked against the list and threatened litigation if not retracted.

The organisation’s convener, Bako Usman, while addressing a press conference in Kaduna, said the continued detention of Mamu since 2022 in the DSS facility was worrisome.

According to him, it is degrading for the Federal Government to designate Mamu, a media consultant to Kaduna-based Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, as terrorists financier.

He said, “We, as concerned civil society organisation, have decided to speak up after a long season of silence in the face of an attempt to deny most Nigerians their fundamental human right by forces that be as Tukur Mamu is equally not an exception.

“It is almost two years now that the publisher, a journalist, and most of all, a Nigerian who was arrested and incarcerated for crimes bothering on sponsorship of terrorism. Ordinarily, our organisation would not have spoken out, but recent events have pushed us to.

“First, we are appalled at the attempt to use media as the staging ground to tell the world that the publisher of Desert Herald Newspaper, Mallam Tukur Mamu, is one of the financiers of terrorism.

“In recent times, Mamu’s health has deteriorated to a worrisome dimension with life-threatening alignments. This much was ascertained by the DSS themselves, but they refused him access to proper medical treatment or allow his personal doctor to have access to him.

“Courts of competent jurisdiction had ruled that Mamu should as a matter of urgency be allowed to access his doctors for urgent medical treatment, the Federal Government refused.”

Yen hits 34-year low, equity markets experience mixed trading

0

The yen dropped to 151.97 to the dollar on Wednesday, the lowest point since 1990 before strengthening slightly.

The fall, according to an AFP report raised speculation that authorities would step into markets to support the currency after officials warned in recent days against speculation.

The plunge brought the yen to a 34-year low against the dollar after a top Bank of Japan official indicated it would press ahead with a loose monetary policy, even after this month hiking interest rates for the first time since the global financial crisis.

Earlier in the day, Bank of Japan board member Naoki Tamura said officials would not embark on a speedy programme of monetary tightening as they try to nurture an economic recovery while keeping a lid on inflation.

“The handling of monetary policy is extremely important from here on for slow but steady progress in normalisation to fold back the extraordinarily large-scale monetary easing,” he said, according to Bloomberg News.

Finance Minister Shunichi Suzuki said the government was watching the situation closely.

“We’re monitoring market movements with a high sense of urgency. We will take resolute action against excessive moves, without ruling out any options,” he told AFP on Wednesday.

The weaker yen helped spur a rally in the Nikkei as exporters benefited, making the index the region’s best performer.

“Given recent history a breach of 152 could instigate intervention,” National Australia Bank’s Rodrigo Catril said. “The break of (the) previous high has accelerated the move.”

Similarly, other markets were in mixed trading ahead of key US data releases this week, including the Federal Reserve’s preferred gauge of inflation, and the looming corporate earnings season.

Hong Kong, Shanghai, Seoul, Jakarta and Wellington were down, while Sydney, Singapore, Taipei, Mumbai, Bangkok and Manila rose.

London and Paris fell at the open while Frankfurt was higher.

The tepid performance followed another soft day on Wall Street with observers warning the latest equities rally may have run out of steam as traders assess the outlook for Federal Reserve interest rates.

While the US central bank last week indicated it would cut borrowing costs three times this year, some investors fear that recent indicators and comments from decision-makers have put that in doubt.

Figures released Tuesday on February’s durable goods sales suggested the world’s top economy remained healthy and consumer confidence had picked up, though less so about the future.

Jobless claims and economic growth readings are due over the next few days, before the crucial personal consumption expenditures (PCE) index on Friday.

While that is expected to show a slight pick-up from January, analysts said that would not likely spook markets too much, though a big miss to the upside could cause concern.

Next month sees the start of earnings releases, which could have a major impact on sentiment, as the recent rally across markets has been partly based on expectations for future profits.

“With market valuations at lofty levels, there’s little room for corporate earnings performance to falter or for the Federal Reserve to deviate from its anticipated course of three rate cuts,” said Stephen Innes at SPI Asset Management.

“Any divergence from these expectations could potentially lead to market turbulence.”

Traditionalists want traditional religious knowledge as subject in schools

0

Traditional Religion Worshippers’ Association, on Wednesday, urged both the Federal and State Governments to establish schools where traditional religious knowledge would be taught as a subject to impart the younger generation with the Yoruba culture and tradition.

The Secretary of the Oyo State branch of the association, Fayemi Fakayode, who made this call in Ibadan, the state capital, further urged the governments to include traditional religious knowledge as a subject in the primary and secondary school curricula like Islamic Religious Knowledge and Christian Religious Knowledge.

Fakayode, in a statement personally signed, stressed the need for proper education to disabuse the minds of the younger generation about Yoruba history and antecedents.

He explained that the miseducation of Africans about their origin and culture had led to many wrong perceptions about their traditional religion.

The secretary, who is the Founder of Olodumare’s Temple of Light International, said, “We made this call during the installation of two Brazilians, Awoyomi Fakayode and Iyanifa Ifatayo Obemo as Mayegun and Yeye Mayegun of Ìjọ Ìmọ́lẹ̀ Olódùmarè Àgbáyé, respectively, on Sunday at Alade Town in the Akinyele Local Government Area of the state.

“The time has come for both the Federal and State Governments to include TRK as a subject in the primary and secondary school curriculum, like they have the IRK and CRK, respectively. There is a need for proper education to impart to the younger generations the needed knowledge of our traditions and religion.

“Also, there is a need to equip the younger generations with culturally based knowledge which will make them useful for themselves and their land as well as implanting in them the spirit of patriotism that will make them unyielding to the spirit of betraying their ancestors.

“We call on the traditionalists to start making efforts to establish this subject in our primary and secondary schools, while the Federal and State Governments will give it the needed support by approving its inclusion in the school’s syllabus and curriculum.”

He said with TRK in place, the children and grandchildren would not be taught about their own religion, culture, tradition, and history by foreigners and those from other religions, who have painted the religion in bad light to lure them away.

Ondo APC elders ask Aiyedatiwa to probe gov aspirant’s death

0

The elders of the All Progressives Congress in Ondo State have called on Governor Lucky Aiywdatiwa to investigate the circumstances that surrounded the death of one of the governorship aspirants of the party, Dr Paul Akintelure.

According Online reports that Akintelure died on Tuesday in Lagos during a brief illness at the age of 61.

Prior to his death, Akintelure had, in a statement issued some days ago through his media aide, Olalekan Akintelure, alleged a threat to his life.

He, however, said he would not be intimidated by any threat.

“The threats against me only strengthen my resolve to stand up for what is right and just. I will not allow fear to dictate our path forward, for us to embrace peace, progress, and unity.

“Our collective strength lies in us to stand together as one, regardless of our differences,” Akintelure wrote in the statement.

To this end, party elders under the auspices of Ondo APC Aborigine, at a meeting on Tuesday, said there was a need for the governor to investigate the deceased’s death, considering his threat to life allegation.

The Chairman of the Ondo APC Aborigines and former Nigerian Ambassador to Togo, Sola Iji, who spoke after the meeting, expressed sadness over the death of the late medical doctor.

He said the purpose of the meeting was to announce the preferred candidate of the group among the over 15 governorship aspirants jostling for the ticket of the party, but the meeting was postponed to a later date to honour the deceased aspirant.

Iji said, “The meeting was meant to receive and adopt the final report of the resolution of the group in supporting one of the aspirants. We were shocked earlier this morning when we learnt of the death of Dr. Paul Akintelure. We have to suspend our meeting to seize the opportunity to mourn his demise.

“A few days back, he spoke out about threat to his life. If he so expressed that threat, even though we do not know the details, we call on the governor to unravel whatever mystery surrounding his death.

“It is part of responsibilities of government to protect lives and property. We have adjourned till another date to discuss.”

The state governor, Aiyedatiwa, had, in a statement, described the death of Akintelure as shocking and devastating.

Aiyedatiwa, in the statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Ebenezer Adeniyan, sympathised with the Akintelure family and the people of Okitipupa Local Government Area of the state.

The statement read, “Dr. Akintelure was a wonderful human being and was a core progressive. He was very consistent and loyal to the tenets of progressive politics in Ondo State and Nigeria.

“He was a friend and associate. He conducted his private business and public affairs with so much decorum and humility to the admiration of many. We have lost a complete gentleman. He will be greatly missed. ”

Following the incident, all the governorship aspirants of the APC have suspended their political activities in honour of the late chieftain of the party.
