0

The Federal Government says it will support mining companies that prioritise local content in their operations.

The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr Dele Alake, made this known in a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media, Segun Tomori, in Abuja on Friday.

Alake said that the support was aimed at promoting local content, which had multiplier effects on developing the economy and benefiting host communities.

He urged mining companies to engage Nigerians in their operations and, in particular to emulate the international best practices of the Segilola gold project located in Ilesha, Ogun state in order to develop the sector.

He commended the company for applying local content in its procurement and employment policies, noting that more than 95 per cent of their staff was Nigerians.

“It gladdens my heart that this is a wholly Nigerian project, and that is very commendable.

“You have contractors, experts, and technical professionals, which are expected in any project of this magnitude, but it is essentially a Nigerian project.

“That for me is very remarkable and worthy of emulation by other potential investors, local or foreign alike, “he said.

Alake commended the company for complying with its community development targets and urged other companies to do likewise.

He said that the move would ensure safer, unfettered operating environment, which would culminate in maximum beneficiation for both operators, the host communities and government.

He lauded them for deploying efficient methods in line with its vision, in spite of the daunting challenges it confronted at inception.

Alake emphasised that his focus had been to redirect local and international attention to the mining sector in order to reposition it.

“I have made sanitising the security of mining environment one of the critical points of my seven-point agenda.

“Recently, as part of the process of actualising that policy, I had to unveil the creation of a mines marshal,” he said.

He said that the marshals have a base in all the states of the country, with the command structure located in his office.

He added that the development was bringing sanity into the operating environment of the mining sector.

According to him, reports indicate that illegal miners are already fleeing their sites.(NAN)

“We will continue to ask for more like you have noted, for the blue economy to succeed the Nigerian Navy has a vital role to play.

“For me, the most critical role is that of maritime security that will help build the confidence of our people, and that of foreign investors, like you have already identified.

The governor said that he was ready to cooperate with the Nigerian Navy, to ensure that no part of the state was a safe haven for criminals.

“When we came in at the early stage, we invested in gunboats and showed that we were serious about security.

“We have recorded a lot of successes even though we still have so much to be done,” he said.

Earlier, Akinwande, noted the long standing relationship between the command and the Akwa Ibom Government, as reflected in the huge contributions made by the government to the Nigerian Navy.

NAN chief, Baba Busu concludes Ramadan tafsir, breaking o

0

The annual 30-day Ramadan tafsir (sermon) and breaking of fast organised and sponsored by  a Minna-based journalist, Alhaji Mohammed Baba Busu, has ended in the Better Life Mosque, CAB-Busu road in Bida.

Baba Busu, the Minna Zonal Manager of the News Agency of Nigeria  (NAN), a traditional title holder (Wakili Labarin Nupe), also sponsored similar programmes in Busu, Niger, billed to wind up on Saturday.

During the closing of the tafsir in Bida on Thursday, another traditional title holder in Nupe land, (Gafaka Nupe)  Alhaji Abdullahi Umaru-BabanNachi, urged Muslims to sustain their good acts and behaviour beyond the one-month period of the Ramadan fast.

BabanNachi, a member of Niger Emirate Council, said: “We should strive to maintain our God-fearing acts exhibited during the fasting period.

National growth LS

“As Muslims, we must strive to maintain all the good deeds we showed during the fasting period and shun the evil and devilish acts we abstained from during the holy month.

Umaru-BabanNachi noted that such good behaviours included abstaining from adultery, cheating, stealing, alcoholism, drug abuse and other secret sins.

The Gafaka Nupe also called on Muslim Ummah to always unite, tolerate one another and continue to be their brothers’ keepers.

In his sermon, Ustaz Abdullahi Idris, “Alifa Fogun”, urged Muslims to always pray for national peace and progress and
tolerate one another for sustained unity in the country.

He noted that the two major religions in the country preached peace, unity and love, stressing that without peace and unity, socio-economic development would continue to elude any society devoid of it.

Alifa Fogun also called on leaders at all levels to lead the people with the fear of God, saying “leaders should always remember that they would all account for their deeds on the day of reckoning”.

An Islamic preacher in the Mosque, during the Ramadan sermon, Mallam Abdulrahman Muhammad-Manbe, urged Muslims to use the period to help the less-privileged in the society.

“As Muslims, we should use this Ramadan period to rededicate ourselves to Islam and strive to help the less-privileged in the society.

“You must not wait for them to come and beg you, you should look for them and help them in whatever way you can,’’ he said.

Muhammad-Manbe stressed the need for government at all levels and the wealthy in the society to do more to help the poor, to reduce poverty and crime.

He described Ramadan as a period of forgiveness and blessing and urged Muslims to take advantage of the holy month to supplicate to Allah

Responding, the organiser and sponsor of the sermon, Alhaji Mohammed Baba Busu, (Jakada Labarin Nupe), who is the Minna Zonal Manager of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), expressed gratitude to the Almighty Allah for bestowing the wherewithal and will on him to organise the one-month long event.

Baba Busu explained that the Ramadan fast was the most auspicious period for him to spend the litle wealth in the growth of Islam.

He beseeched the Almighty Allah to accept all the acts of Ibadah and prayers offered during the period with a view to restoring permanent peace, unity and prosperity to Bida Emirate, Niger State and Nigeria in general.(NAN)

LCCI urges CBN to reconsider MPR hike stance

0

The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) has urged the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to reconsider its monetary policy stance and avoid further increase in the interest rate.
The LCCI Director-General, Dr Chinyere Almona, said this in a statement on Friday in Lagos.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the CBN, on March 26, increased the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) from 22.75 per cent to 24.75 per cent.

She said that while the CBN’s objective of containing inflation and stabilising exchange rate was commendable, it must be pursued in a manner that does not hamper private sector activities and economic growth.
Almona noted that Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in particular, were disproportionately affected by the apex bank rate hike policy.

She said that many SMEs operated on thin profit margins and relied heavily on affordable credit to sustain their operations and drive growth.
Almona added that the surge in borrowing costs stifled their ability to invest in productivity-enhancing measures, hire new employees, and contribute to economic growth.
She said that the recent hike in electricity tariff made the cost of living and doing business in Nigeria unbearable.
Almona noted that the two decisions were compounded by difficulty in the importation and clearing of goods at the ports.
The LCCI director-general added that the use of frequently fluctuating import duty exchange rates made planning difficult for businesses.

She stated that feedback from businesses and analysts suggested that these moves would inflict severe pain on the private sector, further exacerbating the already challenging economic environment.

National growth LS

According to her, the private sector, which is the primary driver of growth and employment generation in Nigeria, is currently plagued with increased borrowing costs, reduced investment incentives, among other challenges.
“The recent hikes in the MPR have directly translated into higher interest rates, making it more expensive for businesses to access credit for

working capital, expansion, and sustainability.
“We have consistently advised that rate hikes alone will not curb inflation without resolving challenges of the real sector of the economy.
“The real sector has demonstrated the capacity to create more jobs, manufacture products for consumption and export, and sustain the industrial base of the economy.
“While we understand that high-interest rates attract Foreign Portfolio Investments and local investors to treasury bills and bonds, we lament the drying up of funds away from the private sector to government treasuries,” she said.
Almona acknowledged that the removal of the subsidy on electricity supply might  have been in line with attracting foreign investors into the sector with a cost-reflective tariff.
She, however, stated that the chamber’s major concern was seeing businesses pay heavily for the services that they did not enjoy optimally.
She explained that it had become a grave concern that with a higher cost of power, companies were still not having access to the service.
Almona called for an aggressive metering programme that would lead to a 100 per cent coverage of electricity consumers.
This, she said, would guarantee liquidity for the distribution companies and give more satisfaction to consumers with a feeling of paying for what they consumed.
She added that beyond the provision of infrastructure, there’s the need to have a sound regulatory and policy environment to attract more foreign investments into the power sector.
“It is,  therefore, expected that with government having access to more funds, the huge costs borne by companies in providing business support infrastructure like power, logistics, warehousing, security, and others should be promptly provided with saved funds from discontinued subsidies and taxes.
“For instance, the Economist Intelligence Unit, in its April Global Outlook, reported that China will be relying heavily on public investments to achieve the projected 4.7 per cent Gross Domestic Product growth in 2024.
“We are concerned that businesses will face double jeopardy in paying a higher electricity tariff and another cost in providing a private electricity supply.
“We urge the Federal Government to invest more in the power sector to improve power supply to businesses and homes,” she said.
She recommended that the CBN explored alternative policy measures that promoted credit access, stimulate investment, and support entrepreneurship. (NAN)
