FRSC deploys marshals, patrol vehicles, ambulances nationwide

0

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has deployed regular and special marshals, as well as patrol vehicles, ambulances, for a smooth Eid-el-Fitr celebration.

The FRSC Corps Marshal, Dauda Ali-Biu disclosed this at the official inauguration of the 2024 Sallah Mega Motor Park Rally on Saturday in Abuja

Ali-Biu also said that Tow trucks and bikes were also deployed, adding that the deployment was across the 52 critical corridors in the country.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme for the year 2024 rally is “Overloading is a Time Bomb: Stop the Deaths, Do not Overload with Persons, Animals or Goods”.

National growth LS

Ali-Biu represented by the Deputy Corps Marshal (DCM) in charge of operations, Shehu Zaki said that the theme was apt and could not have come at a better time.

He said that deployments were also made to other roads across the length and breadth of the country.

According to him, the corps also deployed operational equipment in the categories of Radar Guns, Breathalysers to put a check on drunk driving and speeding.

“I also directed that all Zebras must be active 24/7 and be responsive to calls within the minimum FRSC response time to crashes that might be reported.

“All Commanding Officers have equally been directed to step up patrol operations and ensure strict enforcement of critical offences like overloading, driving rickety vehicles, excessive smoke emission among others.

“The year 2024 may present yet another challenge and that is why we have come out to tackle it head on.

“This is with commitment and determination, as evidenced by the comprehensive measure we are putting in place to address the dreadful experiences we have.

“For instance, for this year’s exercise, I have already directed the deployment of FRSC Regular and Special Marshals, Patrol Vehicles, Ambulances, Tow Truck and Bikes across the 52 critical corridor and other roads across the length and breadth of the country,” he said.

Ali-Biu said that the corps had also put in place, key strategic measures to combat crashes on the road.

He explained that the initiatives included the inauguration of Joint Task Force against use of trailers to convey Human beings which contradicts the original design of the vehicle.

“We have also ensured the commencement of enforcement on overloading of vehicles and the intensification of Mobile Court operations nationwide.

“Our collaboration with the Nigeria Bar Association is already yielding results as prosecution of recalcitrant offenders including drivers involved in fatal crashes is in top gear.

“The mandate of the JTF is to mitigate trailer related crashes and fatalities as well as stop the use of trailer to convey passengers.

“This is because prior to the inauguration of the JTF, the corps recorded a number of avoidable crashes that involved trailers loaded with goods, animals and passengers leading to deaths and injuries,” he said.

The FRSC boss charged the personnel to remain steadfast in the campaign for safer road use, bearing in mind that Road Traffic Crashes (RTC) do not just happen.

He said that RTCs were the products of the actions and in actions of men, and as such, could be averted.

“As we travel to and fro this time, we should endeavour to heed to all established laws, show compassion to other road users, be more tolerant, more careful and drive as if our families are in the other vehicles.

“It is instructive to note that road safety is everybody’s business.

“It requires the support of all stakeholders including fleet operators, corporate bodies and the Nigerian media to ensure its success,” he said.

Representatives from sister agencies like Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) among others

present at the event pledged their support to the corps. (NAN)

Building Nigeria brick by brick, by Fredrick Nwabufo Newsdiaryonline

In governance, opportunity cost is more complex as an empirical construct. Foregone alternatives may not necessarily be foregone. In certain cases, there may be very little wiggle room for such niceties. Allocating resources to critical sectors without neglecting other sectors for a holistic and organic development of the country becomes the potent ideal, verging on emergency.

The proclivity for an integral fettling of Nigeria’s gaping concerns is patent in the ideation and iteration of the Tinubu administration’s priority areas of reforming the economy to deliver sustained inclusive growth; strengthening national security for peace and prosperity; boosting agriculture to achieve food security; unlocking energy and natural resources for sustainable development; enhancing infrastructure and transportation as enablers of growth; focusing on education, health, and social investment as essential pillars of development; accelerating diversification through industrialisation, digitisation, creative arts, manufacturing & innovation, and improving governance for effective service delivery.

It is one reticular hoop. One niche subsisting on the other; one outcome depending on the other and vice versa, and one thread cascading down on the others. A breathing filament runs through the nexus of security, agriculture, education, infrastructure, job creation, and other sectoral motifs. They are one important whole.

Effective security will naturally enhance food production as citizens can go to farm; open arteries of investments, and effectuate the deepening of investments in other sectors, as well as impact the overall well-being of society. Improved agriculture will, in turn, ensure food security, price stability, and hunger mitigation. Infrastructure provision will stimulate investments and create opportunities along multiple channels of growth. And so will investments in education, healthcare, and other sectors all converge to secure Nigeria’s future.

National growth LS

It takes a dexterous laying of bricks to build an edifice. The administration takes a cultivated and diligent brick-by-brick approach to governance; to building that nation we all deserve. It is a steady, well-thought-out, and carefully executed step-by-step fashion as against the harum-sacrum option.

In March, President Bola Tinubu approved the establishment of the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Development Fund (RHIDF) to facilitate effective infrastructure development across the pivotal areas of agriculture, transportation, ports, aviation, energy, healthcare, and education in Nigeria.

The Fund will, among other things, invest in critical national projects that will promote growth; enhance local value-addition, create employment opportunities, and stimulate technological innovation and exports.

It will cover agricultural infrastructure and food security with emphasis on the development of robust agricultural infrastructure networks; ports revitalisation, with premium on the rejuvenation of port facilities and associated infrastructure to streamline operations and enhance the ease of doing business; aviation enhancement, with focus on the revitalisation and modernisation of major airports nationwide; road infrastructure, with some strategic projects like the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road, the Sokoto-Badagry Road, among other key road projects across the nation, to receive attention, and rail infrastructure, with Lagos-Kano and Eastern rail lines as some of the projects to be prioritised.

In healthcare, President Tinubu is sparing no effort as investments are being funnelled into the sector. Recently, he directed the immediate upgrade of key health infrastructure and equipment across the six geo-political zones. Ten hospitals bestrewing the six geopolitical zones will be revamped to provide exigent and top-tier healthcare services in the lines of radiology, clinical pathology, medical and radiation oncology, and cardiac catheterisation.

On April 3, the President signed into law the Student Loan (Access to Higher Education) (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill, 2024. And in furtherance of his resolve to secure Nigeria’s socio-economic future by ensuring sustainable higher education and critical skill development for all Nigerian students and the youth, he expeditiously and carefully appointed a management team. This is so that the necessary instruments are put in place for the effective take-off of this all-important Fund.

There is also the plan for school-feeding and other education-specific initiatives to overhaul the entire pedagogy train.

The President has also approved the establishment of the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation (CREDICORP) and appointed a chief executive to efficaciously manage the corporation and ensure the expansion of access to credit to all classes of Nigerian citizens, while promoting financial inclusion, and enhancing the quality of life of the Nigerian people as they access the tangibles of prosperity.

The Tinubu administration is executing a full-system upgrade, even with specific attention to some sectors, understanding that Nigerians deserve a full complement of good governance and socio-economic security.

Don’t smear Tinubu’s democratic credentials by muzzling press

0

Attempts by police authorities to harrass the Foundation for Investigative Journalism over its reports alleging serious smuggling abuses within the Nigerian Customs Service reflects poorly on the reputation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s democratic credentials.

This was the assertion of Former Presidential Spokesperson, Mr. Laolu Akande during the weekly Inside Sources With Laolu Akande programme on Channels TV Friday.
Since after the Founder/Editor in Chief of the FIJ, Mr. Fisayo Soyombo released a documentary last month detailing allegations of abuses of public trust and abetting of smugglers by officials within the Customs, the Nigerian Police has invited some board members of the media outfit questioning their work.

It is believed the FIJ and Soyombo are being targeted following the undercover report exposing high-scale smuggling across Nigeria’s borders involving Ibrahim Egungbohun Dende, also known as IBD Dende.

In responding to FIJ’s report, IBD Dende petitioned Kayode Egbetokun, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), saying FIJ’s investigation amounted to “character assassination with calculated view to achieve damaging effects against IBD Dende and his businesses within and outside Nigeria”.

National growth LS

But Akande in his opening segment of the show called My Take said, “Who will tell the president that instead of an investigation into an allegation of smuggling by known people that has been reported by journalists, especially the Foundation of Investigative Journalism, what we see is an attempt to criminalise journalism.
“Instead of our authorities to investigate such allegations that are already reported publicly, what we are being told is that there are petitions against journalists. Who will tell the president the attempt to intimidate the press is not in Nigeria’s best interest and that it creates a poor reflection of a president that we all know is a true democrat. Going after him… is not the best way to go,” he said.

“Who will tell the president that all these are happening under his watch and it does have implications for his legacies,” Akande added.

The former Presidential aide in the remarks titled “Who will tell the President,” also called the attention of the president to the resumption of the suspended Social Investment Programmes (SIPs) which was suspended in January.

He then called attention of the president to the investigative report on suspended Minister of Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu.

He said “How long will it take for a decision to be taken on the report of the EFCC? And, how long will it take to have a substantive Minister in that Ministry? Or, has the President approved the idea to move some of the programmes to the Ministry of Finance?”

Akande, known for his advocacy for democratic values and human rights, emphasized the critical role of the press in fostering transparency, accountability, and democracy.

Here is a verbatim of the remarks as monitored on TV on Friday:

“And here is my take for this week entitled, ‘Who will tell the President?’

There are things that the public are interested in but seems not to be getting the due attention of the President. At least there is no communication about these things.

For instance, the restoration of
social investment programme.

Over a Month ago, it was announced that it would resume urgently even as an emergency, it is now April and it has not been restored.

Who will tell the president?

Specifically in February, the Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr Wale Edun said restarting the direct cash transfer was crucial to tackling rising food prices, especially elevated food prices, and government’s ability to providing purchasing power to at least 60 million people who are less well-of.

Has this been done already?

Who will tell the president that these things need to be properly communicated for his own good? So that he can build trust with Nigerians.

Who will tell the president that investigation of the suspended minister of humanitarian affairs, Betta Edu is taking too long?

How long will it take to take a decision on the EFCC report on the suspended minister?
And how long will it take to have a substantive minister named back to that ministry. Or has the President approved the idea to move some of the programmes to the Ministry of Finance?

Who will tell the president that the Emergency Economic Intervention Bill is still lying fallow on someone’s desk somewhere?

This is a bill that codifies some of the tax reforms proposal from the president’s tax reform committee alongside other urgent economic measures. When is that bill going to be sent to the National Assembly? Members of the National Assembly are saying that they have had no movement on this bill since November. Who will tell the President?

Who will tell the president that now that the CBN is able to get the naira to some stability, it is time to tax luxury items that are being imported and cut off our heavy importation so that we can save the naira, so that we can spend less on foreign exchange?

India did something similar when Mahatma Ghandi said “if India cannot feed herself let India starve, if India cannot clothe herself let India go naked.”

It was at a time when India was facing such a crisis as we are facing now in Nigeria. Tough times demand tough decisions.

Who will tell the president that it is time to take a tough decision on our taste for ostentatious imported materials? If it is not a medical emergency product, shouldn’t we suspend or at least discourage this kind of importation so that we can save and conserve forex?

Who will tell the President that instead of an investigation into an allegation of smuggling by known people that has been reported by journalists, especially the Foundation for Investigative Journalism, what we see is an attempt to criminalise journalism?

Instead of our authorities to investigate allegations already reported publicly, what we are being told is that there are petitions against the journalist?

Who will tell the President that this attempts to intimidate the press is not good for Nigeria’s image and creates a poor reflection on a president we all know is a true democrat?

Who will tell the president that instead of encouraging civic engagement by young people, including the type that Fisayo Soyombo is representing by raising issues that has to do with the economic welfare of the Nigerian people, positive youth engagements are being discouraged by
these attempts which are distorted reality.

If the smuggling allegations that Fisayo Soyombo has reported are inaccurate and false, the government should tell us. Going after him and his board is not the way to go. Who will tell the President that all of these are happening under his watch and that it does have implication for his legacies?

One day, he will be former president, what is going to be said about attempts by people under him to intimidate journalists?

Who will tell the President that for months since Nigeria has withdrawn ambassadors from our embassies abroad, their replacements have not been announced and now, our embassies are operating below capacity without substantive envoys.

Who will tell the President that in diplomacy, the place of a properly ranked envoy cannot be compared to a place of somebody acting in that capacity? Who will tell the President that this is not in the interest of Nigeria’s foreign policy?

These are some of the issues that we hope that somebody who has the President’s ears will be frank enough to tell him about .

At the end of the day, it is about what the President does and what he does not do.

And there you have my take for the week.

Etsu Nupe admonishes Muslim faithful to show love beyond Ramadan

0

The Etsu Nupe in Niger, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, has admonished the Muslim faithful to continue to extend love to others and render selfless service to humanity beyond the holy month of Ramadan

The Etsu Nupe, who is  the Chairman of the State Council of Traditional Rulers,   made the call during the closing of Ramadan Tafsir at the Maasaba Jumma’at Mosque in Bida on Saturday.

He  reminded the Muslims of the need to be selfless in service to God and humanity.

The royal father appealed to wealthy Nigerians to continue to show gratitude by helping others and exhibiting total submission to God’s commandments.

Alhaji Abubakar reminded the Muslim faithful to abide by the lessons learnt during the Tafsir preachings and lectures in tune with Almighty Allah’s injunctions.

“The important thing in all the 29 or 30 days that we are going to have the Ramadan is to show love to ourselves and neighbours,”Abubakar charged.

“Beyond Ramadan, we must also show the attitude of giving at all times; we must touch the poor and we must touch our people,” Etsu Nupe said.

He noted that many Muslims became saints during the Ramadan but went back to committing sins afterwards, saying the faithful should continue to abstain from sinful acts at all times.

“Many quit smoking, drinking, fornication, adultery, backbiting and other negative tendencies during the holy month of Ramadan but think sin is permitted after the season,” Alhaji Abubakar warned.

“Muslims, knowing full well that God hates sins, must remain holy for all their prayers to be answered at all times.

The traditional ruler underscored the need for sustainable peace and unity in the country.

He said there was no alternative to peace, as without peace, meaningful development would continue to elude the country.

According to Etsu Nupe, God created Nigerians differently for a purpose and He never makes mistakes

The traditional ruler said the diversities in ethnic, religious and cultural affiliation of Nigerians were to make them more united rather than dividing them.(NAN)

Electricity tariff hike `ll stifle businesses—Abuja chamber of commerce

0

The Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI), has expressed concern over the recent increase in electricity tariffs, saying it could negatively impact on the ease of doing business in Nigeria.

The President of ACCI, Mr Emeka Obegolu, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Saturday that the hike would significantly impact businesses across various sectors of the economy.

Obegolu acknowledged the various challenges already faced by entrepreneurs and investors in the country.

He expressed worry that the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), which are crucial to the country’s economy, would be greatly affected by the hike in tariff.

National growth LS

“The ease of doing business is a critical factor for fostering economic growth, attracting investments, and creating job opportunities.

“Regrettably, the increase in electricity tariffs can hinder these efforts by imposing additional financial burdens on businesses, especially SMEs, which are the backbone of our economy”, he said.

Highlighting the importance of electricity in businesses, Obegolu said that any disruptions or cost increases associated with electricity supply could lead to higher operational expenses.

The president said it would hinder businesses’ ability to invest in innovation and expansion and impede their competitiveness in both domestic and international markets.

He also expressed concern that the tariff hike, combined with other economic challenges such as the removal of fuel subsidy and foreign exchange unification, could further compound difficulties faced by businesses.

Obegolu urged the relevant authorities to reconsider the tariff increase and explore alternative solutions that prioritise the needs of businesses.

“Many enterprises are already struggling with reduced demand, supply chain disruptions, and financial constraints. The burden of higher electricity tariffs exacerbates their challenges and threatens their long-term viability.

“As advocates for the business community, we urge relevant authorities to reconsider this decision and explore alternative solutions that prioritise the needs of businesses and support ease of doing business.

“It is vital to strike a balance between ensuring a sustainable energy sector and mitigating the adverse effects of tariff hikes on businesses, particularly during these trying times,” he told NAN.

Obegolu called for constructive dialogue with stakeholders, including business associations like ACCI, to find collaborative solutions that addressed concerns from both energy providers and businesses.

“Through fostering open communication, promoting transparency, and adopting policies that facilitate business growth and competitiveness, we can create an environment conducive to sustainable economic development and prosperity for all.

“As a leading business support organisation in the FCT, ACCI stands ready to collaborate with stakeholders to address challenges posed by the tariff,” Obegolu said.(NAN)

By Thompson Yamput

Lokoja, April 5, 2024 (NAN) Chief Elias Atabor, the Leader of  Agojeju-Odo community in Kogi, has urged the Federal Government to establish a military base in Omala Local Government Area to checkmate bandits’ incessant attacks on the people.

Atabor made the plea in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lokoja on Friday.

“We are so worried that the death toll keeps rising by the hour.” he said.

National growth LS

The community leader made the call when it was discovered that the death toll of Thursday’s attack on the Kogi community attack rose from 19 to 25.

The figure included four children, while several persons were being hospitalised.

But retired Commodore Jerry Omodara, Special Adviser on Security to Gov. Usman Ododo, said the death toll had risen to 21, with more being discovered by the hour.

Atabor said: “We are pleading with the Federal Government to bring to our community a military base that will help us to checkmate the incessant attacks in our communities in Omala LGA.

“Thursday’s attack is the second in less than three months this year alone. The first was on Jan. 29 when four persons where killed by bandits

“We cannot continue dying like fowls in our own community. Agojeju-Odo is our ancestral home and we have no other place to go beside it

“Many of our people are still missing and we are still discovering more corpses. It’s painful and worrying.

“Government should come to our aide and save us before those bandits, who are sophisticatedly armed to wipe us out from this Earth.”

The leader said that the communities, Agojeju-Odo, Ajokpachi-Odo and Bagaji had become ghost towns with no economic activity going on due to the attacks.

According to him, their children can not have the desired education because virtually all the schohttps://newsdiaryonline.com/updated-federal-high-court-cj-releases-new-posting-for-judges/ols in those communities are closed down.

He expressed gratitude to Gov Usman Ododo and the security operatives for their immediate response by deploying personnel to the troubled communities..

Also, a community stakeholder, Mr  Ademu Ibrahim, urged President Bola Tinubu and Gov. Ododo to assist the communities’ members with some relief materials, having lost their farm produce to the bandits.

He described the attacks as “wicked and unacceptable”, considering the way and manners the bandits were killing the people.

Ibrahim said there had been a running battle between militia groups in parts of Benue and some bandits, which led to the onslaught on the quiet towns of Agojeju-Odo, Ajokpachi-Odo, Bagaji and environs.

According to him, the bandits have destroyed farm produce with ease in an attempt to draw the communities into the conflict.

NAN reports that 19 persons were killed and several others injured during the Thursday’s broad day light bandits attack on Agojeju-Odo community in Omala Local Government Area of Kogi. (NAN)

Nigerian military can end security challenge -Kwankwaso

Sen. Musa Kwankwaso, a former Minister of Defence, says the military has capacity to end the current security challenge facing the country, given the necessary motivation.

Kwankwaso, also the National Leader of New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) stated this when he spoke with newsmen shortly after the NNPP National Executive Committee meeting in Abuja.

He said that although it was the responsibility of the Federal Government to address the security challenge, Nigerians also had crucial role to play by supplying vital information to security agencies.

“As former Minister of Defence, a former Chief Security Officer of Kano State for eight years, somebody who has gone around and well exposed in this game of politics, I believe that tackling security challenge is now is on the shoulders of the federal government.
“We have seen states forming some security outfits. Sometimes you laugh. The level at which it is today, is at the level of Nigerian military and anything short of that wouldn’t work.
“And everybody must work together to make sure there is peace in this country.
“Some of us who are from the villages and even towns, we can remember how our people were going to farms. Now people cannot go to the farm. They also being chased from their villages and towns..

Speaking, Gov. Abba Yusuf of Kano State, urged party members to be total in their dedication to the party, saying there was nothing like 99 per cent loyalty to the party, but 100 per cent.(NAN).
