Nigeria is set to receive a $1.05bn syndicated loan backed by oil from the African Export-Import Bank next month.
The loan is part of a larger $3.3bn prepayment facility arranged by Afreximbank, with repayment terms tied to crude cargoes from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd.
According to Bloomberg, Afreximbank’s Senior Executive Vice President for Finance, Administration, and Banking, Denys Denya, confirmed the verification of crude availability, paving the way for the final release of the balance within the next month.
The loan aims at reviving Nigeria’s economy and enhancing the supply of hard currency in the local foreign exchange market. A substantial portion of it — two-thirds, was already disbursed in January.
This financial manoeuvre is designed to provide Nigeria with immediate funds based on future oil production, offering a lifeline to the country’s struggling economy.

Benin City, Edo state – Philip Shaibu, the impeached deputy governor of Edo state, on Monday, April 8, denounced “in strongest terms” his “illegal” impeachment by the Edo state house of assembly.
In a 4-minute 50-second pre-recorded video shared on his verified X (formerly Twitter) page, Shaibu said the charges of perjury and disclosure of the state government’s secrets against him are “trumped up”.

He stated that his alleged persecution was an attack on democracy, adding that the impeachment was “hatched” because of gubernatorial ambition.
The 54-year-old suggested that he would approach the judiciary to challenge the lawmakers’ decision.

“It is with heavy heart yet a resolute spirit that I come before you to address the recent events that have unfolded within our dear state.

Controversial crossdresser, Okuneye Idris, aka Bobrisky, may spend the Eid-il-Fitri break in custody.
Bobrisky was arrested on April 3 and convicted by a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos on Friday, April 5, 2024, after pleading guilty to the charges of naira abuse levelled against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
The EFCC filed a six-count against Bobrisky, with the first four counts related to Naira abuse and the last two counts concerning alleged money laundering.
Prior to reading the charges, the EFCC prosecutor requested the court to dismiss counts five and six.
Bobrisky pleaded guilty to the four-count charge of Naira abuse.
He, however, asked to be pardoned, adding that he was not aware of the laws binding the Naira abuse and vowed to educate his fans on social media about it.
“I am a social media influencer with over five million followers. I would do a video on my page, and I would educate people about spraying money. I will not repeat it, My Lord. I regret my actions, My Lord. I am a first-time offender,” he said.
Subsequently, Justice Abimbola Awogboro scheduled April 9, 2024, for his sentencing and ordered that he be held in EFCC custody until then.
However, on Sunday, the Federal Government declared Tuesday and Wednesday, April 9 and 10, 2024, as public holidays to mark the Eid-el-Fitr celebration.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, disclosed this in a statement by the ministry’s permanent secretary, Aishetu Ndayako.

A Federal High Court in Abuja has remanded a Binance executive, Tigran Gambaryan in Kuje correctional centre pending the determination of his bail application.
The trial judge, Justice Emeka Nwite gave the order after he pleaded not guilty to the money laundering charges preferred against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Monday.
The EFCC had accused Binance, Gambaryan, and fleeing Nadeem Anjarwalla of concealing the source of the $35,400, 000 generated as revenue by Binance in Nigeria knowing that the funds constituted proceeds of unlawful activity.
Binance Holdings Limited and Tigran Gambaryan’s arriangement were stalled on April 4 following an objection from Gambaryan’s counsel, Mark Mordi, (SAN).
Mordi had insisted that his client could not be arraigned following the failure of the EFCC to perfect service on Binance Holdings Limited.
However, the counsel for the EFCC, E.E. Iheanacho, noted that the second defendant was a representative of Binance in the country, adding that the charge was severed on him on behalf of the company, but it was rejected.
Ruling on the matter, Justice Nwite said the service on Gambaryan on behalf of the company was proper.
He held that Section 478 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act stipulates that service must be effected on a chief agent of a company within the jurisdiction.
Justice Nwite added that all the prosecution needed was to establish that the person being served was an agent of Binance. The judge held, “Does the second defendant qualify as an agent of Binance?
“From the above statement, the second defendant is the duly appointed representative of Binance. The second defendant is bound to receive a summons on behalf of Binance.
“The service of the second defendant on behalf of the first defendant is proper. The court should proceed with the arraignment of the defendants.”
Moreover, he noted that in an affidavit deposed to by Gambaryan’s lawyer, he claimed his client and Anjarwalla travelled to Nigeria to attend a meeting with Nigerian government officials on behalf of Binance.
The charges were then read to Gambaryan, but he pleaded not guilty for himself and Binance.
The prosecution counsel requested a date for the commencement of the trial. But Gambaryan’s lawyer, Mordi pleaded with the court to grant his client’s bail application.
Mordi said, “I am happy to go to trial. But there is a question of the second defendant’s custody. He has been in custody for 40 days. This is a foreign national. There’s nothing more significant than where he is going after here. We are created by God and the greatest thing anyone can have is freedom.”
However, Iheanacho stated, “The proper place to be post-arrangement is a correctional centre. We have Nigerians convicted in the US. His detention was proper. They raised a Preliminary Objection which the magistrate court dismissed.”
Mordi, however, urged the court in the alternative to keep his client in the EFCC custody.
The judge subsequently adjourned the matter till April 18 for the ruling on Gambaryan’s bail application and May 2 for commencement of trial.

In the video seen on the TikTok handle of Orawusi David, the man noted that the solar power system could power basic household appliances such as fans and televisions.

The Edo State House of Assembly, on Monday, impeached the embattled state deputy governor, Philip Shaibu.
The impeachment followed the adoption of the report of the seven-man investigative panel set up by the state Chief Judge to probe allegations of misconduct against Shaibu.
The panel was headed by Justice S.A. Omonua (retd.), and it ended its sitting on Friday after Shaibu failed to appear before it.
He was probed on allegations of perjury and leaking of government’s secrets.
The panel had adjourned till Thursday for Shaibu to open his defence, and when he didn’t show up, he was given till Friday to come and defend the allegation against him, which he failed to do.
The state assembly, which is the petitioner in the case, had opened and closed its case, paving the way for Shaibu to defend the allegations levelled against him.
Shaibu’s counsel, Oladoyin Awoyale, attended the Wednesday (the opening day) sitting but excused himself in the middle of the hearing after the panel refused his prayer to suspend the proceedings pending the outcome of a suit filed in Abuja by Shaibu challenging the impeachment move against him.
Omonuwa upheld the opposition to the suspension prayer by the Assembly, represented by its Deputy Clerk, Joe Ohiafi.
After Awoyale excused himself, Ohiafi went on to state the Assembly’s case against Shaibu.
Recall that when the case came up on March 28, Justice I. E. Ekwo ordered the respondents – Inspector General of Police, State Security Service, the chairman of the impeachment panel, Justice S. A. Omonua (retd), and three members of the panel of seven appointed the by fourth defendant, Edo State Chief Judge and the House of Assembly, to be at the court on April 8 to show cause why the injunction to maintain status, pending the hearing and determination of the Originating Motion on Notice should not be granted.
