Benin City, Edo state –A few hours after the impeachment of Philip Shaibu, Marvellous Omobayo Godwins was on Monday, April 8, sworn in as the deputy governor of Edo state.
As reported byChannels Television, Justice Daniel Okungbowa, the Edo state chief judge, administered the oath of office on Godwins around 1:40 pm.

After he took the oath of office, an excited Godwins who was dressed in a white kaftan and a red native cap, was greeted by a rousing crowd in one of the halls at the government house.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) recently fined the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) for violating the Supplementary Order to the Multi-Year Tariff Order (MYTO) 2024 for AEDC.
According to a recent statement signed by Dr Adamu Abdullahi, the acting executive vice chairman and chief executive officer of the organisation, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has supported this action.

Additionally, the FCCPC demanded that NERC order all DisCoS to meter every electrical customer within 60 days, according to a Daily Trust report.
It said that as required by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018, FCCPC’s ardent advocacy for shielding consumers from deceptive market practices is reinforced by NERC’s decision to penalise AEDC.
It further said that this move was made within 48 hours of the implementation of Band A consumers’ new price structure.
Concern about metre shortage
The commission cited that many customers have expressed concern about being abused and becoming dissatisfied if unmetered Band A subscribers are subject to arbitrary anticipated billing.
It said:
“To address these concerns and promote consumer welfare under the current service reflective tariff regime, FCCPC encourages NERC to mandate DisCos to meter all unmetered Band A customers within 60 days, thus ensuring accurate billing and protecting consumers from arbitrary estimations.
NERC issues fresh instructions to DisCos on new electricity tariffs
Similarly, the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) has demanded that all consumers falling within Band A be metered to prevent the Electricity Distribution Companies from charging them too little.
According to a statement issued by NSE President Margaret Aina Oguntala, the NERC and DisCos should work together to advance metering initiatives to guarantee proper billing procedures and transparency in the use of power.

Band-A users are those who enjoy electricity for more than 20 hours daily.
In 2020, NERC implemented the Service-Based Tariff (SBT) to improve customer service and ensure that energy tariffs paid by end-users accurately reflect the services provided by power distribution companies.

Oloyede said if the moon is sighted on Monday, then the Sultan will declare Tuesday as the 1st of Shawwal and the day of ‘Idul Fitr:
However, he said if the crescent is not sighted that day, Wednesday, 10th April 2024, automatically becomes the day of ‘Idul Fitr.

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, said Emirates Airline will resume operations in Nigeria on or before June 2024.

According to the minister, the Nigerian government and the United Arab Emirates have resolved issues, and the airline is set to announce the date for its first flight.
Keyamo said the UAE airline sent a letter confirming its readiness to resume flight operations in Nigeria.
“Emirates flight resumption is almost happening. I just received a letter from Emirates. The letter is on my phone now. They have gone through all the gamut, and they are ready to come back. They will announce the date because to restart a route, they have to get an aircraft for that route,” he said.
In November 2023, after the Dubai Airshow, Keyamo announced that he spoke with the representatives of Emirates Airlines concerning a possible resumption.
He said the airline was working on the small details and would announce the exact date of their resumption of the flights.
Speaking further, Keyamo stated, “I am announcing to Nigerians for the first time; that I just received a letter from Emirates now. The letter is with me. I have a hard copy thanking you for all the efforts we made. Mr. President was the showman here. He was the one who pushed for it.
“He made my job easy because he went there, and had a diplomatic shuttle to resolve all the issues. That was why I said the last announcement was hasty and not fake news. They will announce the date for their next flight. We have received a letter confirming that all the issues have been resolved and that we are prepared to start coming back. It may be before June,” the minister said.
Emirates Airline halted its flight operations to Nigeria in October 2022 because it couldn’t repatriate funds held in the country.
The airline attributed the October suspension to the $85bn revenue trapped in Nigeria.
