EFCC recovers N30bn, places 50 bank accounts under investigation

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has so far recovered N30 billion in the ongoing probe of suspended Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu.

The Chairman of EFCC, Mr Ola Olukoyede, said this in the March edition of the commission’s monthly e-magazine, EFCC Alert, released on Monday.

Olukoyede said the commission had also placed 50 bank accounts under investigation over alleged fraud that involved Halima Shehu, suspended Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the  National Social Investment Programme Authority (NSIPA).

President Bola Tinubu had in January,  suspended both Edu and Shehu over alleged payment of N585 million humanitarian funds meant for vulnerable groups in Akwa Ibom, Lagos state,  Cross River and Ogun into a private account.

The President also suspended Social Investment Programme and, thereafter, asked the EFCC to take over the case and probe both embattled officials,  including anyone involved.

Olukoyede said the anti-graft agency was making progress on the investigation, emphasising the magnitude of the case and the need for Nigerians to exercise patience.

“With respect to this particular case, we have recovered over N30 billion, which is already in the coffers of the Federal Government. It takes time to conclude investigations; we started this matter less than six weeks ago,” he said.

According to him, there are cases that take years to investigate. There are so many angles to it. And we need to follow through with some of the discoveries that we have seen.

“Nigerians should give us time on this matter; we have professionals on this case and they need to do things right.There are so many leads here and there.”

According to him, as it is now, the commission is investigating over 50 bank accounts that we have traced money to.

“That is no child’s play. That’s a big deal. And again, we have thousands of other cases that we are working on.

“Nigerians have seen the impact of what we have done so far by way of some people being placed on suspension and by way of the recoveries that we have made. You have seen that the programme itself has been suspended,” he said.

He said  the commission was exploring so many discoveries that it had  stumbled upon in its investigation.

“If it is about seeing people in jail, well let them wait, everything has a process to follow.

“So, Nigerians should wait and give us the benefit of the doubt,” Olukoyede stated.(NAN)

Dauda Biu directs FRSC operatives to cover 51 critical corridors

The Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Dauda Ali Biu has directed the over 28,000 Corps’ Operatives (Regular and Special Marshals) to effectively cover 51 Corridors during the Eid-el-Fitr Special Patrol which is expected to commence from 08 to 13 April, 2024.

Jonas Agwu, mni, Assistant Corps Marshal, Corps Pubic Education Officer, FRSC Headquarters, Abuja made this known in a statement Monday

Agwu added that this directive is in view of the envisioned increase in vehicular movement and the need to make the highways safe by eliminating all variables that propel road traffic crashes, fatalities and injuries on the nation’s highways.

In the same vein, the FRSC Corps Marshal also congratulated the Muslim ummah and wished them a blissful, peaceful and safe driving experience as they transit across the nation to celebrate with loved ones.

He called on the motoring public to adhere to the lessons of Ramadan and the teachings of the Prophet by imbibing patience, avoiding recklessness, ensuring that they drive within specified legal speed limit on all roads, as well as desist from overloading of vehicles and use of trailers to convey passengers.

Among the corridors to be covered by the operatives are: Akwanga-Lafiya-Makurdi, Jos-Bauchi-Gombe, Sokoto-Tambuwal-Jega-Birnin Kebbi corridor, Katsina-Kano-Wudil-Dutse-Azare-Potiskum corridor, Kaduna-Saminaka-Jos corridor, Abuja-Kaduna-Kano corridor, Okene-Ogori-Isua-Owo corridor, Makurdi-Otukpo-Obollo Afor-9th Mile corridor, Asaba-Abraka-Ughelli-Warri corridor, Ibadan-Ogere-Sagamu corridor, Sagamu-Mowe-Lagos corridor, Bauchi-Alkaleri-Kaltungo, Kaduna-Kachia-Kwoi-Manchok, Keffi-Nasarawa-Toto-Abaji-Lokoja, Lekki-Epe-Ijebu Ode amongst others.

Dauda Biu appreciated the motoring public for their cooperation in making the roads safe during the 2024 Easter outing. To achieve a better result during the Sallah celebrations, he directed operatives of the Corps to deploy all professional expertise towards ensuring that there is free flow of traffic, prompt clearing of obstructions and effective enforcement of traffic laws.

According to him, the Corps was able to trend down road traffic crashes, fatalities as well as people injured during the Easter special patrol. As such, the Corps is optimistic that her target of reducing road traffic deaths by 5% and above in 2024 will be achieved. He therefore called on the motoring public to extend the gesture received during the last outing to its operatives at this critical time when there is already an upsurge in vehicular movement.

Expectedly, to keep the momentum high towards the realisation of expected outcome, the Corps Marshal also directed that the Corps focuses on Effective Traffic Control, Wrongful Overtaking, Use of Phone while Driving, Drivers Licence Violation, Lane Discipline, Removal of Rickety vehicles on the road, Driving with Expired/ worn out tyre and without spare tyre etc.

Critical operational equipments have also been deployed to help personnel in the operational front. These operational tools include Radar Guns, Breathalysers to put a check on drunk driving, traffic cones and other operational logistics. More so, the Corps Marshal has equally directed that all Zebras must be active 24/7 and be responsive to calls within the minimum FRSC response time to crashes reported.

In line with the foregoing, the patrol is to run in shifts as follows 0600hrs – 1400hrs, 1400HRS – 2000hrs, 2000hrs – 2200hrs, and Night Rescue teams to be on standby at all operational Commands.

The FRSC Corps Marshal therefore advised all motorists to be patient on the road and ensure that they operate within the ambit of the law as the Corps is out to ensure compliance of established traffic laws. As reported by Daily Trust, Wike who was visibly angry at the state of disrepair of the facility, gave the order on Monday, April 8, 2024, after an extensive tour of the sprawling complex.

Wike queried why the contract for the maintenance of such an edifice meant for international events will be handed over to an incompetent firm. He noted that the centre had been left to dilapidate.

He lamented that on several occasions, the nation has faced avoidable embarrassments before the international community while using the facility as a result of power outages, poor cooling system and the deplorable state of the place.

He announced with immediate effect, the contract for the comprehensive renovation of the International Conference Center had been awarded to Julius Berger for a period of eight months, Daily Independent reported.

Gov Aiyedatiwa gives lawyer 7-day ultimatum to retract certificate forgery allegations

Gov. Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State, on Monday, gave a legal practitioner, Oladotun Hassan, a seven-day ultimatum to retract his allegation of certificate forgery levelled against him or be sued.

Aiyedatiwa, in a letter titled: “Defamatory Publications Against Mr Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa” written by his counsel, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, SAN, also demanded an apology in three national dailies.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the letter, dated April 8, was made available to newsmen in Abuja.

“The above matter refers. We are solicitors to His Excellency, the Governor of Ondo State, Mr. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa (“our Client”) on whose behalf we write this letter on the above subject matter.

“It has come to the attention of our client that by an unsolicited letter dated June 2, 2023, you caused to be authored and submitted to the Nigeria Police Force, an unsubstantiated complaint of misrepresentation, certificate forgery, examination malpractice and perjury, against our client.

“Whereas, you are not a registered voter in or an indigene of Ondo State to possess the requisite locus to ground your said complaint.

“Your petition was cleverly routed through unauthorized sources within the police force and without recourse to our client, a report was purportedly submitted to you by the police dated February 19, 2024.

“You thereafter caused the said report to be widely circulated as the basis of a malicious design to disqualify our client from participating in the governorship primary election in Ondo State.

“You thereafter caused another letter to be written to the National Secretariat of the All Progressives Congress (APC) with the same purpose of disqualifying our client from participating in the governorship primary election of the said party fixed for April 2024.

“You have since led a vicious campaign of calumny against our client through these and other false publications, all of which have brought our client into public ridicule and opprobrium, albeit without any justification whatsoever,” he said.

The senior lawyer also accused Hassan of writing another letter on April 5, alleging that Aiyedatiwa, instead of clearing his name on the alleged forgery, the governor conspired with DIG Sylvester Alabi to compromise police integrity.

Adegboruwa alleged that Hassan’s intention was to stop Aiyedatiwa from contesting in the APC primary slated for April and the November governorship election in the state.

He, therefore, gave him seven demands, including “adequate compensation for the false and libelous publications,” against the governor within seven days of receiving the letter of face a criminal charge.(NAN)

NLC sacks Abure’s NWC, to audit LP accounts

The Nigeria Labour Congress, on Monday, voided the national convention that returned the National Chairman of Labour Party, Julius Abure, and his National Working Committee back to office

To fill the vacuum, the stakeholders said the congress will set up a transition committee to oversee the affairs of the party pending when new officers will be elected in three months.

In attendance at the gathering were representative of the Chairman of NLC Political Commission, Prof Theophilus Ndubuaku ; former President of Nigeria Labour Congress, Abdulwahed Omar; Chairman, LP Board of Trustees, Sylvester Ejiofor; Coordinator of Obidient Movement, Dr. Moses Paul and LP Plateau Governorship Candidate, Chief Yohana Margif.

Others are Coordinator of Labour Party Patriotic Members Congress, Dr. Kingsley Okundaye; Kaduna LP Governorship Candidate, Jonathan Asake and representative of Persons with Disability in Labour Party, Ihekwoaba Paul.

The resolution taken by the unionists on Monday also raised concerns on the need to conduct a forensic audit of LP in line with the demand of its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, following allegations of corruption, forgery and fraud levelled against the leadership of the party.

These were contained in the communique released after the NLC stakeholders meeting and made available to The According.

The communique partly read, “”Owing to the current vacuum in the leadership of the Labour Party, the NLC Political Commission consequent on its status in the Constitution of the Labour Party as a registered trustee of the Labour Party, a status that was further buttressed by a Federal High Court consent judgment delivered on March 20, 2018 by Justice Gabriel Kolawole, moved for an immediate constitution of a transition committee with a mandate to set up structures at national, state, local government and ward level for the conduct of an all-inclusive and expansive national convention of the Labour Party.

“The stakeholders meeting passed a vote of no-confidence on the purported Labour Party national convention held in Nnewi, Anambra State and regards as inconsequential the leadership that claims to have emerged from the illegal Nnewi Convention. INEC and all relevant security organisations are hereby notified and should be officially written immediately to recognise the transition committee as the interim leadership of LP pending the conduct of an all-inclusive and expansive national convention

“The committee once constituted should fully take over the secretariats of the Labour Party all over Nigeria and shall immediately set up an assets recovery process of all the properties of the Labour Party. The committee shall also ensure that all the cases of fraud, impersonation and forgery of government documents pending against a few discredited former officers of the Labour Party are forensically audited and culprits are diligently prosecuted as demanded by leader of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi. It is unfortunate that the actions of these few dishonourable characters have splashed mud on the white satin of Labour Party.

“Pursuant to the foregoing, the committee shall within three months of its constitution ensure the conduct of an inclusive national convention of the party starting from ward congresses to local government congresses to state congresses culminating in an all-inclusive and expansive national convention in Abuja. Finally, we reiterate that the Labour Party is a Party for all Nigerians regardless of ethnic, religious, regional, social and economic orientation or status.”

When called for reaction, the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Obiora Ifoh, said the NWC cannot be intimidated by the NLC stakeholders and their ‘co-travellers.’

He said, “We are not interested in whatever they do and LP won’t give credence to any statement they issue. You can imagine the level of impunity with which these people are acting. They have no power to do anything.”

The vote of no confidence passed on Abure and his NWC comes few hours after scores of LP supporters took to the streets of Abuja to protest harassment and continuous interference in the affairs of the party.

The protesters, who went carrying placards with various inscriptions that read “If you are not for Abure, go and seek another political party” and “Abure is our chairman”, vowed to resist any attempt to take over control of the party.

Solidarity songs of ‘We want Abure’ rent the air as the protest march took off from the new Federal Capital Territory chapter of the party secretariat to the Gudu venue of the NLC stakeholders meeting.

They were, however, prevented by security operatives from gaining access to the premises.

A Federal High Court in Abuja has stopped a former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Uche Secondus, from participating in the party’s meetings pending the determination of a motion on notice.

Also, the National Chairman, Secretary of the Party, National Executive Council, and Board of Trustees were ordered not to allow Secondus to attend any of its meetings until the suit is determined.

Justice Inyang Ekwo gave the ruling in an ex-parte motion by one Titus Jones, a PDP member from Rivers State.

In the suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/440/2024, Uche Secondus; the PDP; acting PDP chairman, Umar Damagun; the PDP Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu; the PDP National Executive Committee; the PDP National Working Committee; the PDP Board of Trustees and Independent National Electoral Commission are first to eight defendants respectively.

The plaintiff had sought an order restraining the NEC, NWC, party chairman, secretary, and BoT from allowing Secondus to attend any of its meetings pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.

Jones also prayed the court to stop Secondus from attending any meeting of the party pending the hearing of the motion on notice.

In his ruling dated April 5, 2024, a copy which was sighted by our correspondent on Monday, Ekwo granted all the reliefs of the plaintiff.

It partly read, “Order is hereby made restraining the fourth defendant, his agents, servants, subordinates, officers howsoever described from giving any notice of a meeting of the second defendant be it caucus meetings, meetings of the National Executive Committee (fifth defendant) or Board of Trustees (seventh defendant) or any other meeting however called to the furst defendant who has been suspended from the second defendant pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice

“Order is hereby made restraining the first defendant from attending any meeting of the second defendant, be it caucus meetings, meetings of the National Executive Committee (fifth defendant) or Board of Trustees (seventh defendant) or any other meeting howsoever described participating in the proceedings, deliberations of any such meeting pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.”

The matter was, however, adjourned till April 12, 2024, for motion on notice.

Thomas Tuchel wants Bayern Munich to make “amazing” Arsenal suffer Champions League pain once again as the crisis-torn Bundesliga side try to salvage their season.

Tuchel’s team are on the brink of surrendering the German title for the first time in 12 years after a brutal domestic campaign.

Bayern are 16 points adrift of leaders Bayer Leverkusen following four defeats in their last eight league games, with Tuchel set to leave at the end of the season.

Tuchel knows Bayern can redeem themselves by winning the club’s seventh Champions League crown.

The next step on that journey comes at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday when Bayern face Premier League leaders Arsenal in the quarter-final first leg.

“The season is not lost. The season is over when it’s over,” Tuchel told reporters.

“We are accepting the criticism, we haven’t had the passion and hunger in the Bundesliga that we would expect from ourselves.

“In the Champions League, we’ve played at a very high level so far. We’ve reached our minimum goal. A lot of big teams have not reached the quarter-finals.

“Tomorrow we play with a chance to reach the semi-final, we need two great performances and that is where our focus is.”

Tuchel was gushing in his praise for the way Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has revitalised a club who last won the Premier League in 2004.

“At the moment, Arsenal are the best team in the Premier League. All the data shows that, they have amazing data in the Champions League as well,” Tuchel said.

“They are in great form. It will be a big test for us. They managed all aspects of the game very well.

“How Arteta transformed the side is amazing. He deserves the biggest compliments for it.”

But Tuchel hopes Bayern’s greater knowledge of the Champions League stage can prove decisive.

– ‘We have more experience’

“We know our own strengths and how we want to cause them pain. The Champions League is a competition where we have more experience over the last few years,” he said.

“There is a different type of football and that has an influence. We definitely want to use it to our advantage.”

Bayern have won 5-1 in each of their last three matches against Arsenal, eliminating them from the Champions League four times in the last 19 years.

The Bavarians have won the Champions League six times — most recently in 2020 — while Arsenal are chasing their first triumph in the tournament.

Tuchel, who won the Champions League as Chelsea boss in 2021, knows Bayern’s challenge will be over if they don’t contain Arsenal’s threat at set-pieces.

“They are the best team in Europe currently in terms of dead-ball situations,” he said.

“In every game, that are dominating in the toughest league in the world. That is a sign of their quality.

“We haven’t shown that form in the league but tomorrow we aren’t playing in the league.

“If we show the best version of ourselves tomorrow then we can compete at the highest level. This is what we have to do.”

Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard has been an influential figure in their renaissance under Arteta.

And Tuchel is keen to keep the Norway midfielder under wraps on Tuesday.

“Odegaard is one of the key players. We know very well how he wants to start their attacks and the connections between him and Bukayo Saka,” he said.

“I hope that we find the right solutions and the players will find the key to make life difficult for him.”

AAC candidate condemns impeachment of Shaibu in Edo

Dr. Udoh Oberaifo, the Gubernatorial Candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), on Monday, condemned in strong terms the impeachment of deputy governor Philip Shaibu by the Edo House of Assembly.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Shaibu was impeached on Monday for “revealing government secrets”.

He has been replaced by Marvellous Godwins Omobayo as the new deputy governor.

In a statement in Benin, Oberaifo said regardless of the charges levelled against Shaibu, due process was not followed.

Oberaifo who noted that Shaibu was not given a fair hearing and described the impeachment as a blatant disregard of the principles of justice.

“Of particular concern is the fact that the impeachment proceeded despite a pending case filed by the deputy governor at the Federal High court.

“This legal action should have warranted a status quo, yet the impeachment was carried out regardless, casting doubts on the motives behind the hurried proceedings,” he said .

The AAC candidate raised the alarm over the connection between the Labour Party (LP) and the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the state .

He alleged that the new deputy governor was a card-carrying member of LP, and was yet to resign his membership as at the time he was sworn in.

“This action is in clear violation of the Electoral Act 2022 and it underscores the connivance between the LP and PDP to consolidate power,” he added.

He condemned the display of political maneuvering and warned against  godfatherism that has permeated Edo politics.

He urges the people of Edo state to reject the PDP and LP at the polls, come September 2024, and embrace the AAC as a viable alternative.

Oberaifo called on all Edo people to rally behind the AAC, embrace its programmes, visions, and manifestos, and cast their votes for him as the next governor of the state in September (NAN)
