ADP faults FG on cyber security tax

0

The Action Democratic Party (ADP), has faulted the introduction of the Cyber Security Tax by the Federal Government describing it as an additional burden on Nigerians.

Mr Yabaji Sani, the ADP National Chairman said this on Wednesday in Abuja at the presentation of Certificate of Return to the party’s Ondo State governorship candidate.
Sani said that successive governments in Nigeria had imposed compulsory levies on individuals and entities, saying however that excessive taxation without consideration on the plight of the masses was injurious.

“All over the world the only form of raising funds and revenue by government is through taxation.
‘`If that is the fundamental reason which is accepted universally that government must tax citizens to earn revenue to develop, provide security and welfare for the people, perhaps the government is in order to levy people.
“But in our situation, if we look at what is happening today, this government is looking for revenue left, right and center from the wrong place, from the wrong people and at the wrong time.

“With what is happening to our naira, foreign exchange, the level of poverty, unemployment, and suffering due to removal of fuel subsidy, unification of exchange rate, increase in electricity tariff and now the cyber security crime levy.
“It is insensitive to put pressure on the masses when the government knows that the loss of revenue of the country is through the oil and gas sector and not through the Central Bank of Nigeria,’’ he said.
He urged the government to capitalise on the oil and gas sector and other sectors of the economy where resources were being looted and unaccounted for to raise revenue for developmental projects.
‘’These sectors have the capacity to fund the government without mounting pressure on the masses,’’ he said.
Sani also urged the government to put in place policies that would rather protect the masses without necessarily taxing them beyond the reasonable limit.
He said that the cyber security taxation was ill timed and should be reconsidered for the benefits of the citizens, adding also that Nigerians should begin to question the government’s usage of taxes.
Speaking, Mr Ayodeji Akinnodi, the ADP Ondo governorship candidate promised to ensure free healthcare services and free education in the state, if given the mandate in the Sept.21 poll.
He urged the people to vote for him, so he could turn things around in the state.(NAN)

Binance bribery allegation diversionary-FG

Senate approves FG’s 2022-2024 external borrowing plan

The Federal Government says the bribery allegation by Binance is a diversionary strategy to run away from their wrong doings.

The Minister of of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji-Mohammed Idris made this known in a statement issued by his media aide, Mr Rabiu Ibrahim on Wednesday in Abuja.

According to the Minister, the Federal Government is aware of attempts by Binance to launder its impaired image as an organisation that does not play by the rules and laws guiding business conduct in sovereign nations.

“The Organisation made false allegations of bribery against unidentified Nigerian Government officials, who it claimed, demanded 150 million dollar in cryptocurrency payments to resolve the ongoing criminal investigation against the company.

National growth LS

“This claim by Binance lacks any iota of substance. It is nothing but a diversionary tactic and an attempted act of blackmail by a company desperate to obfuscate the grievous criminal charges it is facing in Nigeria.

“While this lawful investigation was going on, an executive of Binance, who was in court-sanctioned protective custody, escaped from Nigeria, and he is now a fugitive from the law.

“Working with the security agencies in Nigeria, Interpol is currently executing an international arrest warrant on the said fugitive.

“The phantom bribe claim is part of an orchestrated international campaign by this company that is facing criminal prosecution in many countries including the United States, to undermine the Nigerian Government,” Idris said.

The Minister recalled that, a week back, the founder and former CEO of Binance, Changpeng Zhao, was sentenced to prison in the United States, after pleading guilty to charges very similar to what Binance was being investigated for in Nigeria.

He added that Zhao agreed to pay a fine of 50 million dollar, while Binance is liable for 4.3 billion dollar in fines and forfeitures to the US Government.

“We would like to remind Binance that it will not clear its name in Nigeria by resorting to fictional claims and mudslinging media campaigns.

“The only way to resolve its issues will be by submitting itself to unobstructed investigation and judicial due process.

“The Federal Government will continue to act within its laws and international norms, and will not succumb to any form of blackmail from any entity, local or foreign,” Idris stressed. (NAN)

Senate approves FG’s 2022-2024 external borrowing plan

The Nigerian Government has described as false and diversionary, a claim by Binance Chief Executive Officer, Richard Teng, that officials of government demanded $150m in cryptocurrency payments to resolve the ongoing criminal investigation against the company.

The Federal Government’s position was made known in a statement signed Rabiu Ibrahim, Special Assistant to the Minister of Information and National Orientation.

Titled: BINANCE FALSE CLAIM ON BRIBERY DIVERSIONARY, the statement said, “The Federal Government of Nigeria is aware of attempts by Binance to launder its impaired image as an organisation that does not play by the rules and laws guiding business conduct in sovereign nations.

Continuing Ibrahim said, “In a blog post that has now been published by many international media organisations, in an apparent well-coordinated public relations effort, Binance Chief Executive Officer Richard Teng made false allegations of bribery against unidentified Nigerian government officials who he claimed demanded $150m in cryptocurrency payments to resolve the ongoing criminal investigation against the company.

“This claim by Binance CEO lacks any iota of substance. It is nothing but a diversionary tactic and an attempted act of blackmail by a company desperate to obfuscate the grievous criminal charges it is facing in Nigeria.

“The facts of this matter remain that Binance is being investigated in Nigeria for allowing its platform to be used for money laundering, terrorism financing, and foreign exchange manipulation through illegal trading.

“While this lawful investigation was going on, an executive of Binance, who was in court-sanctioned protective custody, escaped from Nigeria, and he is now a fugitive from the law. Working with the security agencies in Nigeria, Interpol is currently executing an international arrest warrant on the said fugitive.

“The phantom bribe claim is part of an orchestrated international campaign by this company that is facing criminal prosecution in many countries including the United States, to undermine the Nigerian government.

“Just a week ago, the founder and former CEO of Binance, Changpeng Zhao, was sentenced to prison in the United States, after pleading guilty to charges very similar to what Binance is being investigated for in Nigeria. Electoral Hub tasks candidates on rule of law

0

As political parties gear up for campaign activities towards the forthcoming Edo and Ondo states elections, The Electoral Hub has called on candidates to conduct themselves in accordance with the rule of law and democratic norms.

This is contained in a statement signed by The Electoral Hub’s Director, Princess Hamman-Obels and made available to newsmen on Wednesday in Abuja.

According to Hamman-Obels, the Electoral Hub is profoundly concerned over the irregularities witnessed during the primary elections held by various political parties between February 1 – 24, 2024 in Edo, and between April 6 – 27, 2024 in Ondo State.

She pointed out that these primaries were held in preparation for the forthcoming governorship elections scheduled for September 21, 2024, and November 16, 2024, in Edo and Ondo States respectively.

National growth LS

She however noted that the contests were characterised by alarming reports of irregularities and complaints in both states across party lines.

“The complaints underscore a worrying trend of threats to inclusivity and internal democracy within party structures. It also points to a readiness of contesting parties and candidates to flout electoral rules and undermine the integrity and credibility of the process.

“The Electoral Hub firmly believes that free, fair, and credible elections are essential for the sustenance of democracy and the stability of any nation. As such, stakeholders, especially political parties and candidates, must take steps to avoid actions that undermine the credibility of the process.

“Concerted efforts should be exerted towards ensuring the credibility of the process, not only on election day but also before and after the election. Any deviation from these principles undermines the credibility of the electoral process and erodes public trust in democratic institutions.

“As political parties gear up for campaign activities, we urge them and their candidates to conduct themselves in accordance with the rule of law and democratic norms. The most pressing concern for us during this campaign period is the issue of pre-election violence, hate speech, and inciting remarks. Parties and candidates must take steps towards preventing electoral violence of any kind, especially during this period of campaigns,” stated.

Hamman-Obels added,”Furthermore, we call upon the electoral umpire to address the identified challenges and take necessary measures to ensure that the upcoming governorship elections in Edo and Ondo States are conducted in a credible, peaceful, and transparent manner.

“The umpire and other duty-bearers are encouraged to act decisively in bringing violators of the rules of conduct to justice in line with existing laws.

“We emphasise the importance of collaboration among all stakeholders, including political parties, candidates, electoral officials, security agencies, civil society organisations, and the media, in promoting a peaceful and successful governorship election.”

She reiterated that successful elections require collective action.

“We reiterate that successful elections require collective action. Also, an election is a process and not an event. The actions and inactions preceding and after the contest are crucial determinants of its success or failure.

“It is, therefore, important for political parties, candidates, and other stakeholders to begin acting now towards ensuring a integrity and credibility of the electoral process that the men, women, and children of Edo and Ondo States will be proud to be associated with,” he stated.

It’s been one full year without you, great High Chief Raymond Aleogho Dokpesi. How time flies! Your death continues to remind me that heaven is indeed far from earth, but that despite the long and lonely

By Clement ‘Afe Afemikhe

It’s been one full year without you, great High Chief Raymond Aleogho Dokpesi. How time flies! Your death continues to remind me that heaven is indeed far from earth, but that despite the long and lonely way to heaven the road is always quick.

I can’t ever forget that bright and sunny day in Agenebode.
That town by the River Niger was unusually alive on Friday June 23, 2023, when your remains was to be committed to mother Earth. It’s was
one hell of a lugubrious day for both the locals and visitors as well as for people in far away lands who had recorded your burial date on their diaries.

I remember that from the St Peters secondary school field in Agenebode where a requiem mass was held down to your country home, people lined both sides of the road– walking, running, riding bicycles and motorcycles, driving vehicles– just to pay their last respect to you, the great son of son of Weppa Wano who has been the handkerchief cleaning the pains and sufferings from their faces.
I remember the occasional loud sternutation as some helicopters/choppers passed over that town situated on the edge of the River Niger.

I remember myself standing , waiting at a spot about a few meters away from your country home for the casket bearers to arrive. I yet remember how I stood still in the hot shade of trees, watching the motorcade as it crawled on like some over fed snakes towards the gate to your country home. I watched in grief as the young men beside the wagons, wearing melancholic looks, kept dabbing their faces with white handkerchiefs, to get some relief from the baking Sun.

I remember how that day one of my feet was quietly moving to the sound of grief in my head; unconsciously I joined the throng of mourners, slowly moving forward, edging towards the main entrance to your beautiful home in Agenebode.

I remember that on sighting the motorcade l silently said to the undertakers to drive slowly because I hated to see that your body they were trucking go; but they proceeded to the graveside, your final resting place after the hard fought life’s battles and the many victories.

I can’t forget how all your loved ones, Raymond Dokpesi Jr leading the pack, stood in the circle around the grave. Together we witnessed the undertakers wobble down two ropes into the cold grave and your body was lowered to the earth. I was there to fetch the sand which was thrown on your casket and every quantity shovelled into that grave tore at my heart, wrenching it.
In my head I was singing the Christian hymn, “Nearer My God to Thee.” And once the last heap of sand was tipped into your new lonely house I looked up to the sky and I asked, “God, why did you take High Chief Raymond Aleogho Dokpesi away from me, from his lovely children, from his extended family, from his circle of friends, and just from everyone else?”

Oh, that hot afternoon, I wondered to myself; will the cycle of life and death ever be broken? Hmm, oh, I am aware, Lord, that, by and by, there’s a better home waiting in the heavenly place, up there with our Creator, for all humanity.

Like everyone else I have struggled to keep pace with the time without you. How very sad that at the end of man’s earthly strivings he eventually returns to where he began life’s journey. True, the distance for everyone in life has been determined; life’s distances are deceptive, they give us no time to reflect through the years to ascertain how far we’ve gone and how well we’ve done.

I know what it’s been like without you, the great Ezomo who always popped up his face in the newsroom at every available opportunity. Each passing day since that May 29, 2023 date, I keep savouring the sadness of your death, relieving your memories, contained in my deepest grief.
Our great late High Chief Raymond Aleogho Dokpesi, if you tell me to, I will stop grieving over your departure from this world. But you give me and millions of others a need for grief.
The restless hollow ticking of the alarm clock in my living room constantly reminds me of you and your good nature. I loved you then and will always do, my saint out of bondage.

Constantly, too, the birds darting and fluttering in the DAAR premises in Asokoro bring back memories of you; memories that are now covered and hidden in my over-aching heart like some birds by the limbs of the trees around the James Ibori building housing the AIT News 24 and the newsroom.

Time has tried to render memories of you vague and blurred in me but they constantly flash through my heart like the birds over the shades of the blooming trees dotting the landscape of our corporate headquarters in Kpaduma hill. I yet think of you as always, the go-getter, great son of Agenebode, who went fearlessly into any legitimate venture.

In my memory, you stand tall, dripping with sweat, smiling. You were sturdy and butterfly-like. Your rotund face always alit with easy and hope inspiring smile, smile that encouraged everyone in the Daar family to duty and industry.
I remember our huge frame, big chest, strong arms and a pair of athletic legs that usually saw you moving hither and thither the Daar communications PLC premises across Nigeria and beyond.
Ah, my saint out of bondage, DAAR, you were indeed a motivator and companion to the wretched of the earth.

I still imagine your big and kindly hands resting on the massive conference table in the boardroom whispering questions and suggesting answers; making your opinion on issues and giving directions on how your beautiful bride, DAAR Communications PLC, can indeed remain the pacesetter and trailblazer in the Nigerian media
landscape. You were and still remains the ball bouncing over words and actions for the Daar conglomerate.

Before May 29, 2023, you were with us, guiding, planning, directing and instructing. You were with us laughing and teasing members of staff, encouraging Management to strive to break new grounds in Nigeria’s media landscape. It’s to your credit that the Daar group, under your watch, has grown to enviable heights. You tried your hands on everything humanly possible to stabilize the organisation and to continue to grow it.

Eramah, I remember you now as always. You emerged from a poverty ridden polygamous family to become a famous shipping magnate, renowned media entrepreneur and astute politician.

You indeed placed very high premium on the sun set years of your earthly sojourn hence the great life you lived and the good life you gave to people in fulfillment of the covenant you had with God that, you will bring succour to the needy, weak and poor if you succeed in life. You indeed kept to that solemn promise to God by dedicating your time and resources to Philanthropy. You had sufficient progressiveness to tilt life’s oddities in favour of the down trodden and helpless. Well done my benefactor for all seasons. Through you, most of us recognized that the shadow of the darkest night will never be understood without the appearance of the dazzling light of the morning.

As we mark the one year anniversary of your death, the picture of you in my head is one of courage and hope, and it reminds me of big and significant you have been to our success story in the Daar family…. God truly loves you, the Ezomo of the universe and I trust that He will yet continue to guide your son, our chairman, Raymond Dokpesi Jr, to take your legacies to greater heights. “You give them a drink from the river of Your pleasures. For with You is the fountain of life; in Your light we see light.”(Ps.36: 8,9).

Ezomo, it’s true you’re now no longer with us but your warm and gentle sun continues to shine, illuminating lives, energizing and giving us all reasons to hope and to continue to strive.

I love you Eramah, but God loves you more.

Continue to rest peacefully with your Maker, great Ezomo.

CITAD rejects telecom tax, suggests inclusivity measures

0

The Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) has kicked against the planned reintroduction of the telecom tax by the Federal Government.

CITAD’s position was made known in a statement signed by its Executive Director, Y.Z Ya’u, . He said “(CITAD) expresses firm opposition to this proposed reintroduction of telecom taxes as part of efforts by the Nigerian government to secure a new $750 million loan from the World Bank.”

He said further, “While we acknowledge the country’s need to increase its revenue sources, we believe that taxing telecommunication services, especially at this critical time when banks and power sectors are introducing more charges and increasing their charges, would have greater consequences on the lives of the common man, rather than facilitate Nigeria’s journey towards digital transformation as many would abandon the sector.”

The CITAD statement reads in full: “Reports by many media organizations in the country have indicated that the Nigerian government, under the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC), is planning to reintroduce the previously suspended telecom tax in the country. This is a worrying trend that needs to be addressed before Nigerians are plunged into another catastrophic hardship.

National growth LS

“As stakeholders who (are) deeply invested in the digital future of Nigeria, the Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) expresses firm opposition to this proposed reintroduction of telecom taxes as part of efforts by the Nigerian government to secure a new $750 million loan from the World Bank. While we acknowledge the country’s need to increase its revenue sources, we believe that taxing telecommunication services, especially at this critical time when banks and power sectors are introducing more charges and increasing their charges, would have greater consequences on the lives of the common man, rather than facilitate Nigeria’s journey towards digital transformation as many would abandon the sector.

“This proposed telecom tax, as outlined in the Stakeholder Engagement Plan for Nigeria’s ARMOR program, will exacerbate the already existing challenges and barriers of affordability and accessibility in the country. Instead of adding another burdens and financial constraints to citizens, it would be better for the government to prioritize and focus more on measures that will bring down the cost of access to technology, thereby enabling more Nigerians to harness its transformative power. These initiatives can be on providing and facilitating the deployment of community networks to hard to reach areas and those with no connections.

“Fellow Nigerians, it is of significant importance to note that affordable access to telecommunications services is not merely a matter of convenience nor a privilege but a fundamental enabler of socioeconomic development and inclusive growth. By providing a conducive environment for widespread digital connectivity, Nigeria can unlock immense potential and resources across various sectors.

“Furthermore, extending access to thousands of unconnected communities in the country should be a paramount priority by the present government. By bridging the digital divide and empowering these communities with connectivity, Nigeria can have an inclusive development and accelerate its progress towards becoming a digitally inclusive nation.

Ya’u said “We call upon the Nigerian government to reconsider its plan and explore alternative strategies to enhance revenue generation without compromising the affordability and accessibility of telecommunications services.

“Based on the above, as an organization deeply involve in providing community networks to the underserved and unconnected communities in Nigeria, we consider it our responsibility to call on the Nigerian government, as a matter of public interest and national development, to implement the following in order to ensure inclusivity and bridge the digital divide in the country:

“Prioritize investment in last-mile connectivity infrastructure to reach remote and rural areas with limited access to telecommunications services.

“Telecommunications companies under the supervision of government agencies should introduce subsidies and incentives to the underserved communities to ensure equitable access to telecommunications services.

“Harmonize and simplify regulatory processes and reduce bureaucratic barriers to entry for telecommunications operators as this will encourage more investment into the sector and drive down costs for consumers.

“Invest in digital literacy programs to empower citizens with the skills and knowledge needed to fully participate in the digital economy.

“Finally, we call on the government to encourage collaboration among government, private sector, and civil society organizations in order to expand access to telecommunications infrastructure in underserved areas.”
