Abuja women abandon wigs for low cut hair

0

As the weather condition gets harsher with the temperature going as high as 40 degrees Celsius sometimes, many women in Abuja have abandoned their wigs and opt for low cut hair.

For some of them, wigs remain fashion items that should be seasonal and so they can do without them for now in order to cope with the very hot weather occasioned by climate change.

Mrs Titilope Ariyo, a businesswoman, said that though her husband forbade her from cutting her hair, she had to do it to brace the present weather condition.

“He actually threatened to send me back to my parents’ house if I cut my hair because he does not believe women should cut their hair, but I had to because I need to be pouring water on this head.

National growth LS

“I promised to grow the hair back when the weather condition improves but I seriously do not know if I will be able to keep that promise.

“However, it’s a really good experience just pouring water on my head whenever I want to because I feel it in the whole body”, she added.

As for Mrs Joy Kaka, a journalist, being on low cut was because she was losing her hair and needed to cut it to treat it.

However, cutting it during the heat season was a very good decision as it aligned with her need to cope with the weather.

“I went on low-cut because I was seriously losing the hair and decided to start over again but now I don’t think I will grow the hair again because I’m enjoying it.

“I bath and pour water on my head now and it’s a beautiful feeling because the heat is terrible. Not forgetting that it’s cheap. Usually I love using wigs so I make corn rows frequently and use my wigs.

“However, lately even the corn rows aren’t cheap and I use to make them weekly before I cut my hair.”

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) had since February predicted a prolonged heat wave across the country.

In some periodic weather outlook releases, the agency had said that air temperatures in the Northern part of the country would climb to as high as 41°C and 39°C in the South, indicating a significant increase in heatwave.

It had warned that the high level of heat could cause dehydration, heat-related illnesses and respiratory issues, among other chronic conditions.

It also forecast that residents of some states were likely to experience sunstroke, muscle cramps and heat exhaustion.

The agency emphasised the importance of staying well-hydrated and avoiding strenuous physical activities, especially between the hours of noon and 4pm.

It also advised the public to stay well hydrated and reduce strenuous physical activities during the peak hours.

Speaking the impact of the heat wave on health, Dr Henry Ewunonu, a physician and health advocate, blamed the situation on climate change.

This, he said, was because humans have damaged the ozone layer which now has holes which allows more radiation from the sun to penetrate the earth.

He said that humans continue to do so through burning of fossil fuels and other unwholesome anti-climate activities such as deforestation and generation of biologic wastes.

However, excessive hot weather is antithetical to health.

According to him, an overheated body can be likened to any overheated gadget or device such as car, mobile phones or computer.

“It is either they are immediately cooled to salvage some functionality or they get permanently damaged. Likewise all living organisms suffer motor-cognitive, multi-systemic impairments due to excessive hot weather.

“This excessive heat according to the World Health Organisation (WHO) is above 35°C and when above 42°C, life may no longer be guaranteed.

“Excessive hot temperature which leads to overheating of the body systems including the human brain may account for abnormal behaviour among the most vulnerable populations who work under very strenuous environmental conditions.

“Such conditions include transport workers, petty traders, even the traffic/law enforcement agents.

“When people say “him head dey hot”, it refers to abnormal behaviour occasioned by heat under the circumstance”, he added.

Ewunonu also said that excessive hot weather adversely affects those with preexisting cardiovascular conditions such as hypertension and other heart diseases, respiratory illness such as bronchial asthma, renal diseases and metabolic diseases such as diabetes.

He said that this happens due to excessive water loss from the body making the blood to be thicker, exerting a burden on the heart and reducing the elimination of wastes through urine as the body struggles to conserve available water.

According to him, such a situation puts extra load on the kidney.

“Hot environmental temperature leads to what they call higher insensible water loss through the airways and skin.

“The body is however equipped with a great thermostat system but which functions at a temperature range of around 37°C.

“This thermostat fails in the face of excessive hot weather and the consequences such as heat exhaustion, heat stroke and death may ensue”, he said.

He said solution to heat wave starts with humans reducing the production of carbon dioxide gas which is the main culprit.

This, he said, could be done through alternative energy sources aside hydrocarbons, use of solar inverter batteries rather than fuel generators, avoiding bush burning and curbing felling of trees.

As for the roles of individuals, families, communities, the society and government at all levels, he said that a whole-of-society approach was much needed to save humanity.

“Individuals should avoid the direct effects of the sun hitting their skins and entering their homes during the day and let air in at night, save for insecurity.

“Heat stroke will kill faster than malaria, so families are encouraged to open their windows to allow cooler air to aerate their homes.

“They shouldn’t cook inside their living rooms and if possible not sleep where there are many heat generating household equipment such as refrigerators.

“People should endeavour to begin their days earlier as situations permit so as to be under the cover of a shade and not under the scorching sun of the daytime, while those living in rocky mountain environments should take extra care.”

Ewunonu said that the rocks absorb the heat in the day and release to them through convection currents and radiation at night so people should use water either for bathing or drinking very generously.

He advised that people should continue pouring water on their bodies to remain cooler.

Also, that the government should be more frontal in confronting the energy crises because as long as everyone is operating their generator sets, the environmental temperature would remain high.

“The above has also explained why some ladies are cutting their hair and abandoning wigs. It’s a natural adaptation or conditioning response to the hot weather

“There is one junk being posted that pouring water on the head or starting to bath from the head region causes stroke. That has been debunked.

“Now, because people are not the same and what works for one does not work for another, every adult should study his or her body to know how best to keep the body cooler during those hot afternoons and nights’’, he said.

While women cut their hair to beat heat Dr Ezekiel Edino, Medical Director, General Hospital, Igbokoda, Ondo state also advises them to take other measures.

“It’s important to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, especially when exercising or spending time in hot weather. If you’re experiencing any of the symptoms of dehydration, it’s important to seek medical help as soon as possible.

“To remain hydrated this time, it is important we do more fruits and vegetables intake, wear light clothing, avoid overcrowded and congested environment” he said. (NANFeatures)

Kaduna SUBEB trains 321 teachers on Reading, Numeracy

0

The Kaduna State Universal Basic Education Board (KADSUBEB), on Tuesday trained no fewer than 321 teachers on the Reading and Numeracy Activities (RANA) teaching methodology.

RANA is a three-year project funded by DFID through UNICEF as part of the Girls Education Program Phase 3 (GEP3).

It is aimed at improving literacy and numeracy instruction in grades one to three in both public schools and Integrated Quranic Schools, with the ultimate goal of increasing literacy outcomes for learners, especially girls.

To achieve these goals, RANA has developed Hausa-language teaching
and learning materials, built teacher capacity, mobilised communities, and engaged local governments to improve early grade reading policies.

National growth LS

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that the three-day refresher training, which is phase three of the RANA programme, supported by the World Bank, was under the Better Education Service Delivery for All (BESDA) programme.

Speaking to newsmen at the opening of the training, the Head, Education Management Information System of KADSUBEB, Mrs Josephine Michael, said the trainees would step down the training to teachers in the state government’s schools.

She added that the teachers would equally step down the training to their pupils in Hausa language which is the immediate language of the pupils environment.

Michael, who doubles as the Desk Officer of BESDA in KADSUBEB, stressed that the Kaduna State Government envisaged pupils in the state to be able to at most in primary three identify letters, sounds and be able to read simple sentences.

She also said they wanted to ensure the children were able to do simple addition and comprehend little stories at primary three, so they could do better in upper classes in terms of writing letters and do much comprehension at their level.

Speaking further, Michael said the programme, which was introduced in 2019 had improved the children learning capacity.

“Because they are leaning in play, songs, actions and in the language they understood better, there is much improvement in learning outcome.

“The methodology is child-centred, it makes the children more involved,” she said.

One of the trainees, Malam Shehu Bashari from Zaria LGA, said the RANA programme had capacitated him to a higher level.

According to Badnarik, the first time I received such training, I thought it was a joke until when I saw how it made our learners learn very fast.

“I discovered that before the advent of the programme, learners from primary one to three were unable to read simple sentences talk less of knowing all the alphabets,” he said.

Also, Rahab Benjamin from Kaura LGA, said she had a niece who could not read in spite of many efforts.

Benjamin however, said when she was trained on the first phase of the RANA programme, she settled down and taught her niece in ways and manners which she quickly understood.

“I have benefited from the programme even in my house hold,”she said.

NAN reports that the participants, who cut across teachers from the State’s 23 LGAs, were RANA mentors, coaches and master trainers for primary one to three.(NAN)

According to him, it creates employment and provides foreign exchange earnings through experts.

Lawal said,”It will interest you to know that owing to the reawakened and renewed demand of the country’s woods in recent times by China, Vietnam, India, Nigeria has been listed as one of the exporting countries of woods and charcoal to these countries.

“This is with a view to provide forest products to feed domestic and international markets.”

In his remarks, Dr Afolabi Tajudeen, President of the association, disclosed that over the years, the association had sounded the alarm  against abuse, misuse and collective damage to the forests’

.

“Nigerians have continuously treated the forests as if it is an inexhaustible resource, forgetting that though renewable, it is potentially destructible.

“Our actions and inactions have resulted in an inclement environment which now breeds disease and pests that pose danger to human existence.

“On the economic side, the unsustainable management of our forests has resulted in the loss of fertile lands, leading to declining agricultural productivity, job losses, rural-urban drift and the creation of urban slums with their attendant implications to our society

“Sadly, forestry administrators at all tiers of governments in Nigeria are virtually in comatose,” he said.

Similarly, Gov. Dikko Radda, said his administration was ready to partner with the association to protect and preserve the natural forest in the state.

Radda said that the government had set up a committee to recover the forests encroached across the state.

“We are now waiting for the committee to submit its reports for the government to implement recommendations,” he said.

Bill to establish Federal University of Applied Sciences, Manchok, passes second reading in Senate Newsdiaryonline

0

A Bill for an Act to Establish the Federal University of Applied Sciences, Manchok, Kaduna State passed second reading in Senate on Tuesday.

Leading the debate on the bill, the sponsor, Senator Katung, Sunday Marshall (Kadana South) giving the background of the University said the bill was read for the first time in the hallowed chamber on Thursday 27th July 2023  for justification for the Senate to pass the Bill into law.

He said science has been an integral part of mankind and existence from time immemorial, adding that the knowledge that science gives us is what we classify as “Basic Science’’ whilst the application of this knowledge for practical purposes is called “Applied Sciences’’.

According to him, “the very essence of this Bill is to provide a highly specialized Institution of learning that would provide a holistic view of science as a broad area and how elements of different Applied Sciences work with each other.

National growth LS

The objectives of the University amongst others include: to provide courses of instruction and training and research in Applied Sciences and produce technicians and such skilled personnel required for related industries.

“Act as agents and catalyst through post-graduate training, research and innovation for the effective and economic utilisation, exploitation and conservation of the country’s natural, economic and human resources.

“Identify the technological problems and needs of the society and to find solutions to them within the context of overall national development.

“To provide and promote sound basic scientific training as a foundation for the development of technology and applied sciences, taking into account indigenous culture and the need to enhance national unity.

“Post graduate research leading to the award of diplomas, first degrees, and higher degrees in various aspects of applied sciences”.

Senator Marshall said the establishment of the University proposed in the instant Bill will advance knowledge through research and the nurturing of unique innovations in Applied Sciences by the transformation of the scientific knowledge of Nigerian graduates. This would in turn stimulate Nigeria’s technological advancements.

He emphasized that the proposed University of applied sciences, although located on an existing Institution, will attract some financial implications for its operational and physical structures necessary for smooth takeoff at the existing Federal College of Statistics, Manchok in Kaduna state.

Senator Marshall urged his Distinguished Colleagues, with “every sense of humility” to “unreservedly” support the bill for second reading.

His appeal to his colleagues achieved the desired result as the bill received overwhelming support from all the members.

Senator Adams Oshiomhole (Edo North), who called himself a Kaduna man, haven worked there for many years, in his comments said the university was well deserved, considering the neglect of southern Kaduna where Manchok is located.

The Path to Sustainable Growth

0

In the fiercely competitive landscape of business, standing out from the crowd is not just an option; it’s a necessity. In a world where consumers are bombarded with choices, companies must find ways to differentiate themselves or risk being lost in the noise. This principle is succinctly captured in the book “Killer Differentiators,” where the authors emphasize the importance of carving out a unique identity in order to thrive in the marketplace. One of the central tenets of this philosophy is encapsulated in the phrase “Differentiate or Sell Cheap.” In this article, we delve into the significance of this principle and explore how businesses can leverage it to achieve sustainable growth.

At its core, “Differentiate or Sell Cheap” underscores the idea that businesses must either offer something truly distinct to justify premium pricing or compete on price alone. In today’s hypercompetitive environment, merely offering a product or service is no longer sufficient. Consumers are seeking experiences, value, and emotional connections with brands. Therefore, companies must find ways to differentiate themselves in the minds of their target audience.

But why is differentiation so crucial? In a crowded marketplace, consumers are faced with an abundance of choices. Without a compelling reason to choose one brand over another, they are likely to default to the cheapest option. This commoditization erodes profit margins and makes it difficult for companies to sustainably grow their businesses. However, by differentiating themselves, companies can create a unique value proposition that resonates with consumers, thereby reducing the emphasis on price as the primary decision-making factor.

So, what does it mean to differentiate? Differentiation can take many forms, ranging from product features and quality to customer service, brand personality, and overall customer experience. Essentially, it involves finding a distinctive aspect of your business that sets you apart from competitors and resonates with your target audience. This could be a proprietary technology as seen with Arravo, a commitment to sustainability, a focus on craftsmanship, or even a quirky brand personality.

National growth LS

Take, for example, the case of Apple. Despite being in a market saturated with tech giants, Apple has managed to carve out a unique identity based on its design aesthetics, user-friendly interface, and ecosystem of products and services. By differentiating itself as a premium brand focused on innovation and user experience, Apple is able to command higher prices for its products compared to its competitors.

Of course, differentiation alone is not enough. Companies must also deliver on the promises implicit in their differentiation strategy. This requires a relentless focus on quality, consistency, and customer satisfaction. After all, a differentiated brand that fails to meet customer expectations will quickly lose credibility and relevance in the marketplace.

But what about the alternative option: selling cheap? While competing on price alone may seem like a viable strategy to attract budget-conscious consumers, it often leads to a race to the bottom, where profit margins are razor-thin, and sustainability is compromised. Price wars can be detrimental to both individual businesses and the industry as a whole, fostering a culture of discounting and devaluing products and services.

Moreover, competing on price alone is inherently limiting. It positions a company as a commodity provider, where the only differentiator is price, making it difficult to build brand loyalty or command premium pricing. In contrast, differentiation allows companies to create meaningful connections with consumers, fostering loyalty and advocacy that transcends price considerations.

That being said, there are instances where selling cheap may be a strategic decision, particularly in highly price-sensitive markets or when entering new markets where brand recognition is low. However, even in these cases, companies should strive to differentiate themselves in other ways, whether through superior customer service, unique packaging, or value-added services.

Ultimately, the principle of “Differentiate or Sell Cheap” is about making a deliberate choice about how to position your brand in the marketplace. It’s about recognizing that in order to thrive in today’s competitive landscape, businesses must offer something of value that resonates with consumers. Whether that value comes from a unique product feature, exceptional customer service, or a compelling brand story, the key is to stand out in a meaningful way.

In conclusion, the principle of “Differentiate or Sell Cheap” is a powerful reminder of the importance of differentiation in today’s business world. By finding ways to set themselves apart from competitors, companies can create sustainable growth opportunities and build lasting relationships with their customers. Whether through innovation, quality, or customer experience, differentiation is the key to success in a crowded marketplace. So, the next time you’re faced with the choice between standing out or competing on price alone, remember: Differentiate or Sell Cheap.

NLC rejects CBN’s cybersecurity levy

By Joan Nwagwu

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has rejected the recent directive by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) of 0.5 (0.005) per cent Cybersecurity Levy on electronic transfers.

Mr Joe Ajaero, NLC President disclosed the NLC position in a statement made available to newsmen on Tuesday in Abuja.

National growth LS

Ajaero was reacting to a recent circular issued by the CBN, mandating banks and payment service operators to effect the deductions, effective in two weeks.

The CBN has said that the move, ‘ostensibly aimed at bolstering cybersecurity measures, threatens to exacerbate the financial strain already faced by the populace’.

Ajaero said the NLC vehemently condemned the directives and therefore called for immediate stoppage and reversal of the policy.

According to him, this levy, to be implemented by deduction at the transaction origination, is yet another burden on the shoulders of hardworking Nigerians.

“The Nigeria Labour Congress recognises the importance of cybersecurity in today’s digital age.

“However, imposing such a levy on electronic transactions, without due consideration for its implications on workers and the vulnerable segments of society, is unjustifiable.

“This levy stands as another tax too much for Nigerians, burdening them with additional financial responsibilities.

“We see in this levy as another gang up by the ruling elite to continue its extortion and exploitation of hapless and helpless workers and the masses,”he said.

He noted that while the CBN had exempted interbank transfers and loans transactions from the levy, the broader impact on everyday transactions would not be overlooked.

He added that such deductions directly affect the disposable income of workers and further diminish the purchasing power of the common citizen.

The NLC president also noted that domestic manufacturers and other businesses were already shuttering as a result of the stifling socioeconomic environment.

He added that, yet, instead of creating a business-friendly environment to encourage greater investments in the economy, the opposite seems to be what is being practised.

Ajaero therefore, called on the Federal Government to reconsider the directives and prioritise policies that alleviate the financial burdens of Nigerians.

“We urge a collaborative approach between the government, regulatory bodies, and stakeholders to develop sustainable cybersecurity measures that do not unduly burden the populace.

“We reiterate our commitment to championing the rights and welfare of Nigerian workers and masses,”he said. (NAN)
