Femi Adebayo, RMD, Iya Rainbow take home awards at 2024 AMVCA

Nollywood star, Femi Adebayo, on Saturday won the Best Indigenous Language Film award at this year’s Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCA) held in Lagos.

The AMVCA Industry Merit Award is put together by MultiChoice to recognize the contributions of individuals to the development of African cinema.

The film edged out four other works to take home the award at the ceremony held at the prestigious Eko Hotel and Suites in Victoria Island, Lagos.

The event was attended by leaders in the entertainment industry and the corporate world.

Other movies nominated for the award are Ijogbon produced by Kunle Afolayan, Mami Wata by CJ Fiery Obasi, Odunlade Adekola’s Orisa and Nana Akoto put together by Ghanaian actor, Kwabena Gyansah.

Industry legends, Richard Mofe Damijo (RMD) and Idowu Philips aka Iya Rainbow also went home with Merit Awards at the event.

Labour Party unveils governorship campaign council in Edo

The Labour Party (LP) in Edo State on Saturday unveiled its campaign council for the September 21 governorship election in the state.

The council will be led by Rev. Sam Omede as Director-General and Dr. Ehikioya Agboga as deputy.

Other members of the council are the Senator representing Edo South, Ned Imasuen, Esosa Iyawe and Murphy Osaro Omoruyi.

The LP chairman in the state, Mr. Kelly Ogbaloi, unveiled the campaign council at the party’s secretariat in Benin City.

He said: “In preparation for the upcoming election, we have meticulously selected individuals of impeccable character to lead the state campaign council and local government campaign committees.”

The chairman also appealed to the party members to leverage the forthcoming new voters’ registration exercise to expand the voter’s base and ensure broader participation in the election.

Ogbaloi added: “A robust membership drive shall be launched to attract new members and reconcile with disenchanted individuals who have legitimate grievances.”

Gunmen kill two policemen in Enugu

Gunmen on Friday night killed two policemen attached to the Ogui Divisional Headquarters in Enugu State.

The operatives were conducting a stop-and-search along the Presidential Road in Enugu when they were attacked by the hoodlums at 9:30 p.m.

Meanwhile, the Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has placed a N10 million bounty on the killers.

The governor, who addressed journalists at the end of a State Security Council meeting at the Government House, Enugu, vowed that the government would leave no stone unturned in the efforts to bring the culprits to book.

He also alleged that men of the Eastern Security Network (ESN), the armed wing of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), were behind the attack.

The governor said: “We just rounded off our Security Council meeting where we discussed, among other things, the gruesome killing of our policemen—men of the Enugu State Police Command—by criminals suspected to be members of the ESN.

“Let me say this, this bestial and cold-blooded action cannot be condoned in Enugu State. I have given my directives to the security agencies that there must be no hiding place for these criminals in Enugu State. We must use everything necessary to hunt down, arrest, and bring to justice the perpetrators of this heinous crime.”

Nigerian govt to begin rehabilitation of Adeniji Adele –Falomo Road Monday

The Federal Government will begin rehabilitation work on the Adeniji Adele – Falomo road on Monday.

The Federal Controller of Works, Lagos, Mrs. Korede Kesha, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday in Lagos.

She said the road would be progressively closed in sections for rehabilitation work from Falomo roundabout to Adeniji Adele.

The controller added that one section of the road would be fully repaired and reopened to traffic before work begins on the next section.

According to Kesha, motorists will be diverted to nearby streets to access alternative routes during the closure.

She said the first section to be closed would be from Glover Junction to Falomo and urged motorists to use alternative routes.

Aina, Awoniyi shine as gallant Forest lose to Chelsea in five-goal thriller

Super Eagles duo of Ola Aina and Taiwo Awoniyi were in action for Nottingham Forest in their 3-2 defeat to Chelsea in a Premier League clash on Saturday night.

Mykhaylo Mudryk had opened the scoring in the 8th minute for Chelsea before Forest netted two goals through Willy Boly in the 16th and Callum Hudson-Odoi on 74 minutes.

Forest had most of the ball and appeared to be overpowering Chelsea.

But the Blues made a key change as they brought in Raheem Sterling, who made a power finish in the 80th minute to boost his side’s morale.

Two minutes after the equaliser, Nicolas Jackson netted the winner with a fine header to seal a big win for the Blues.

Tinubu vows to reposition Nigerian universities

President Bola Tinubu on Saturday reiterated his administration’s resolve to reposition Nigerian universities to meet the ever-changing demands of modern society.

Tinubu gave the assurance at the 52nd Convocation of the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN).

The president, who was represented at the event by the Director of University Education in the Federal Ministry of Education, Mrs. Rakiya Ilyasu, said his administration would continue to address the issues of funding for both research and infrastructural development in universities.

He said: “In recognition of the very important roles being played by universities in research and manpower development, my administration will continue to reposition Nigerian universities to enable them to adjust ever-changing demands of the modern-day world.

“My administration will continue to address the issue of funding both for research and infrastructural development to encourage impactful education that will bring about sustainable development.”

The president, however, said he would demand prudence and accountability in managing and utilizing funds released to universities.

“I will always demand prudence and accountability on funds released to universities in the country by my government.

“I will also demand stability and harmony in universities so that the era of disruption caused by prolonged industrial actions will be a thing of the past,” President Tinubu added.

Army chief orders investigation into soldiers’ protest of overcrowded cells, poor feeding

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen Taofeek Lagbaja, has ordered investigations into allegations of overcrowded cells in the Nigerian Army barracks and poor feeding of detained operatives across the country.

This followed the emergence of a video showing detained soldiers protesting their poor treatment in a detention centre in Sokoto State.

The Director of Army Public Relations, Maj-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, disclosed this in a statement titled: “Army’s Response to Viral Audio Visual Footage of Soldiers Protesting Overcrowded Cells, Poor Feeding” on Saturday in Abuja.

The statement read: “The Army headquarters has taken note of a report and audiovisual recording circulating on social media produced by some of its personnel held in custody at the 8 Division Garrison detention facility.

“Undoubtedly, the Sokoto barracks detention facility incident is quite unfortunate and an embarrassment to the sound administration efforts of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), to say the least and in line with his leadership style.

“The COAS has instituted an appropriate investigation into the incident to determine whether it is an isolated or widespread situation in similar detention facilities.

“While the service regrets and has gleaned some lessons from the incident, it will, however, not condone the manner the inmates expressed their purported grievance.

“Mutiny and conduct prejudicial to service order are grievous misconducts, and this very incident epitomises such.

“As such, as Army, on the one side, goes ahead to implement the COAS directive to look into the state of all NA detention facilities, as detainees’ lives also matter, the Service shall not shy away from appropriately sanctioning the soldiers involved in the unruly behaviour in its Sokoto detention facility for failing to exhaust all available options to channel their complaints to the appropriate authorities.

“And if it was discovered they did and nothing was done, necessary administrative actions will be taken against anyone found to have failed to discharge his/her duties effectively.”

Govt restarts demolition of illegal structure on Lagos Island markets

The Lagos State government has resumed the removal of illegal structures in Lagos Island markets.

The state Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, confirmed the development in a post on his X platform on Saturday.

He said the exercise was carried out by a combined team of the Ministry of Special Duties, Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, and Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).

Others are the Lagos Neighborhood Safety Corps (LNSC), Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency (LASURA), Lagos Central Business Districts and the Nigeria Police Force.

The commission said the exercise ensured safety, orderliness, and free traffic flow in the area.

The state government commenced demolition of illegal structures in Lagos Island last month following the fire incident that led to the collapse of six buildings and destroyed 16 others in Dosunmu Street.

Wahab said: “Lagos State Government continues the removal of illegal extensions in Markets in Lagos Island to ensure safety, orderliness, and opening up of Free Flow of Traffic, the illegal extensions removed before were rebuilt by the defaulters.

“A combined team of the Special Duties, Physical Planning, Ministry of Environment @LasgMOE, Urban Development, LASTMA, LASBCA, LNSC, KAI, CBD, LASURA, Lagos Fire Service, NPF.

“This operation is part of the recommendations of the Docemo Fire Incident Committee led by the Commissioner of Special Duties, Hon. Gbenga Oyerinde.”

NSCDC arrests man for defiling four-year-old girl in Ekiti

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested a 27-year-old man, Ojo Afolabi, for allegedly defiling a four-year-old girl in Ekiti State.

The suspect was arrested after the girl’s mother filed a formal complaint at the NSCDC office in Ado-Ekiti.

The agency’s spokesman in the state, Mr. Tolu Afolabi, told journalists on Saturday a medical report had confirmed that the victim’s hymen had been broken.

The four-year-old victim while narrating the incident alleged that the suspect removed her underwear and had carnal knowledge of her sometime in late April 2024.

However, the suspect denied the allegation, saying he was indicted unjustly.

XEJet plane veers off Lagos airport runway

An XEJet Airlines aircraft skidded off runway 18L at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, on Saturday morning.

The aircraft with registration number 5NBZZ arrived from Abuja at 11:29 a.m. and veered off the runway into the grass verge at the point of landing.

The XeJet E14 plane had 52 passengers and three crew members.

Rescue teams at the airport were quickly deployed to help evacuate the passengers.

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) confirmed the incident on its verified Instagram account.

The agency said its “Go Team” had been deployed to the scene for the evacuation of passengers and crew members

At the moment, Runway 18L is closed to traffic.
