Court sentences police inspector to death for killing phone dealer

The Delta State High Court sitting at Asaba on Tuesday sentenced Inspector Ubi Ebri of the Nigeria Police Force to death on a murder charge.

The court presided over by Justice C. D Diai convicted and sentenced Ebri to death for killing a phone dealer, Onyeka Ibeh in Asaba.

The deceased, a popular phone dealer in Asaba, along with his wife was driving from Ugbolu to Asaba on April 5, 2023, when they were flagged down by the police team for search.

Ibeh had stopped and waited to be searched, but after a prolonged delay without being attended to, they decided to move on.

Infuriated by the action of the deceased, the police inspector immediately opened fire into the vehicle and the bullet hit Ibeh on the head.

The wife of the deceased, who was in the front seat, was unhurt.

The incident led to protests by youths along the streets of Asaba and to police headquarters to demand justice.

The prosecution, led by a Director in the Ministry of Justice E.H Edema, speaking to journalists after the judgement, said, “Today’s judgement is a landmark judgement because justice has been served in this case to the deceased and the society at large.”

Also, the older brother of the deceased, Ifeanyi Ibeh who witnessed the judgement commended the court for delivering justice to his family.

Democracy dividends coming your way, Speaker assures Nigerians

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has congratulated Nigerians on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of unbroken democratic governance, assuring them that more dividends of democracy would come their way soon.

The regime of General Abdulsalami Abubakar handed over power to a democratically elected government of Olusegun Obasanjo on May 29, 1999, following widespread condemnation of the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election won by the late Moshood Abiola.

In a statement signed on Wednesday by the speaker’s Special Adviser, Media and Publicity, Musa Krishi, Abbas noted that Nigeria evolved in the past 25 years, adding that “The dividends of democracy are bound to reach more Nigerians.”

According to him, this year’s celebration marks a significant epoch in the life of the National Assembly, as it also coincides with the first anniversary of the 10th Assembly.

The 10th National Assembly was inaugurated on June 13, 2023, by President Bola Tinubu.

The statement read in part, “Democracy has come to stay in Nigeria. The country has been navigating through the learning curves successfully; though it is not yet, the country has continued to grow in democratic experience and practice.”

The speaker, who represents Zaria Federal Constituency, Kaduna State, enjoined Nigerians across tribes and religions, genders, and age groups, to continue to contribute their quota to the growth and development of the country, assuring that Nigerians would morph into a nation that her citizens would be proud of.

Abbas further urged Nigerians to continue to support the government at all levels and remain law-abiding citizens, stressing that it is the collective responsibility of all “With the people as the critical stakeholders,” to make the government succeed in its plans, policies, and programmes.

FACT-CHECK: Have the 36 states offered minimum wages as claimed by X user?

An X user, @DeeOneAyekooto, recently posted the amount each of the 36 states in Nigeria offered as minimum wage.
The claim has amassed thousands of engagements on X and was also reported by an online newspaper.

Recall that Organised Labour, including Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) and other affiliate bodies had declared a strike after the negotiations for N460,000 monthly wage with the federal government ended in deadlock.
Afterwards, the strike was suspended for further negotiation, the outcome of which was the proposal of N62,000 by the government.
Verification:
TVN conducted keyword searches but found no report in any credible newspaper to validate the claim. Further checks on the website revealed no information pertaining to the claim.
This newspaper had reported that governors under the auspices of Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) had rejected the N62,000 the federal government offered as new minimum wage.
As of June 11, the latest update was that the Labour had rejected the government‘s proposed wage and threatened to resume the suspended strike.
Conclusion:
The 36 states have not offered any amount as minimum wage after rejecting the ‘unsustainable’ wage the federal government proposed.

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State on Tuesday received Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, at the Government House in Port Harcourt.
TVN sighted a video of Otti arriving at the Rivers State government house in Port Harcourt.
Fubara and Nyesom Wike, Minister of the FCT, have been embroiled in a face-off that has polarised the state House of Assembly into two camps.
It is not clear yet if Otti’s visit to Fubara is connected with the ongoing political crisis in the state.

War: Russian soldiers will have no safe place on Ukrainian soil – Zelenskyy

Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has vowed to ensure that Russian troops have no single safe location on Ukrainian soil amid the ongoing war.
Zelenskyy said Ukrainian soldiers are improving in the war against Russia as soldiers are destroying their enemy’s infantry and armoured vehicles.
The president spoke in a statement he posted on his X page.
According to Zelenskyy: “Our forces continue to counter Russian attacks in the Kharkiv region. This direction has been reinforced, particularly in Vovchansk and border areas in general.
“Brigadier General Mykhailo Drapatyi is in charge of this direction and is currently on the ground. He is being provided with all of the necessary firepower and forces.
“Our results are improving. We are destroying the enemy’s infantry and armoured vehicles. I appreciate all of our warriors who strictly adhere to orders, hold their positions, and make every effort to stabilize the situation.
“At the same time, we can clearly see how the enemy acts and their intent to stretch our forces thin. Clearly, we do not divert the necessary assistance and provision from Donetsk directions, particularly Kramatorsk and Pokrovsk directions.
“We remain vigilant in the Kupyansk direction as well. We can also see enemy activity in the Sumy and Chernihiv regions, including subversion groups and shelling. We respond properly with fire.
“Our task is crystal clear: to thwart Russia’s attempt to expand the war. It is up to everyone in positions from Chernihiv to Vovchansk, Kharkiv to Donetsk, to fulfil it.
“The occupiers must not have a single safe location on Ukrainian soil. And in the Ukrainian skies.

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) National Solidarity Vanguard has blamed former Governor Nyesom Wike for the ‘monumental loss’ of about 25 Rivers State Assembly seats.

The PDP group accused the FCT Minister of using Hon. Amaewhule Martins and other ex-PDP lawmakers as cannon fodder in his ill-advised fight with his successor, Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

In December, the assembly members loyal to the immediate past governor defected to the All Progressives Congress in the wake of the political impasse involving him and Governor Fubara.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday in Abuja, Hon. Usman Saidu Calculus, the Executive Director of the PDP National Solidarity Vanguard described Wike as a saboteur working against the party.

Calculus said the former governor is blinded by his financial muscle and doesn’t understand the true essence of leadership

“Wike, once a prominent member of our party played a pivotal role in this monumental loss. His actions have cost us dearly, and we cannot remain silent,” the statement said.

“To the extent that he has weakened the party for the APC, we can no longer consider him a member of our party. He is already enjoying the 30 pieces of silver he sold the PDP for.

“We must express our anger, disappointment, and resolve to protect the integrity of the PDP. But why did this happen? Why did lawmakers who were elected on our platform abandon their mandates, and throw away twenty-five parliamentary seats in one day?

“The answer lies in the unchecked ambition of one man—Nyesom Wike. His financial muscle, while impressive, blinded him to the true essence of leadership. Money alone cannot sustain a political movement; it takes wisdom, humility, and a genuine commitment to the people. Only such arrogance that makes him continue to parade himself as a chieftain of the PDP even when his habitual treachery is glaring for all to see.

“Femi Falana (SAN), the legal luminary whose insights we respect, has rightly pointed out that political parties are not mere vehicles for personal gain. They are institutions that serve the collective interest of the citizens. Wike’s actions, driven by hubris and a disregard for due process, have undermined our party’s cohesion and unity. ”

The PDP group, therefore, called on the party leadership to take decisive action and expel Wike from the party.

“Let this be a stern message to all who would put their ambitions above the party’s well-being and future. We cannot afford to lose more lawmakers or members in other states, especially when the stakes are now so high ahead of the next general elections,” the statement added.

“Our solidarity vanguard stands firm. We will not waver in our
commitment to the PDP’s principles. Let us rally together, rebuild our ranks, and emerge stronger. Our party deserves leaders who uphold its values, not those who undermine them.”

The Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, has formally reached out to the Inspector General of Police, IGP and filed a request for a legal order to prevent Speaker Abdulmalik Sarkindaji of the Niger State Assembly from overseeing the marriage of 100 orphaned girls.
The speaker had revealed his intention to provide marriage support for the orphaned girls who tragically lost their parents in bandit attacks in the Mariga local government area, as part of his constituency project, scheduled for May 24th.
During a press conference in Abuja, Kennedy-Ohanenye expressed her disapproval of the plans, highlighting that a thorough investigation has been initiated into the matter.
She said, “I want to let the honourable speaker of the house in Niger state know that this is totally unacceptable by the Federal Minister of Women Affairs and by the government.
“Because there is something called the Child’s Rights Act and I said it from the onset, that it is no more business as usual.
“These children must be considered, their future must be considered, the future of the children to come out of their marriage must be considered.
“So I have gone to court. I have written him a letter and written a petition to the IG of Police.
”And I have filed for an injunction to stop him from whatever he is planning to do on the 24th, until a thorough investigation is carried out on those girls, find out whether they gave their consent, their ages, find out the people marrying them,”

House of Representatives member for Kaduna North, Bello El-Rufai has disclosed that the state governor, Uba Sani taught him politics.
El-Rufai described Sani as his mentor because he made him contest for the House of Representatives seat.
The lawmaker disclosed this during an interview hosted by Yaya Abba, titled, ‘With Shuraim.’
Bello said two of his friends influenced his move to work under Sani while he was a serving Senator in the 9th Senate.
Bello also noted that his membership in the Green Chamber was not his father’s call because El-Rufai “never campaigned for me”.
He said, “I think working with Senator Uba Sani taught me the politics that fits this country.
“He’s still my mentor, we talk every day. After he (Sani) emerged as the APC candidate to replace my father, he told my father he wanted me to run for the Reps.
“But Senator Uba Sani was adamant that I had learnt a few things while working in the 9th Senate as a senior legislative aide. That was the step towards me running.
“For me, where I’m from, I feel I’m genuinely responsible for every individual that’s in Kaduna North.”

Labour Party explains Peter Obi’s meeting with Saraki, Lamido

The Labour Party (LP), says the meeting between its presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, ex-Senate President Bukola Saraki and Sule Lamido, on Monday was part of efforts to rescue Nigeria and Nigerians from the current state of economic crisis and hardship.
Obi had, on Monday, caused ripples when news broke that he had paid a visit to the top political figures in their Abuja homes with many speculating that the visits may not be unconnected with a planned coalition by opposition parties to form an alliance towards the 2027 presidential election.
Confirming the speculations in a statement on Tuesday, LP’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, said Nigerians should expect more of such meetings ‘aimed at brainstorming over the sufferings of Nigerians.’
Ifoh said the LP was in support of the meeting of like minds who are passionate about charting a new course for the country.
“Yes, it was a meeting of like-minded individuals who believe there is a need for better leadership in our nation,” Ifoh said.

“They are people who see that Nigerians are suffering, not receiving what they bargained for, and observe corruption persisting in high places while Nigeria’s resources are mismanaged.

“This meeting is just the beginning; there will be further interactions and gatherings with other individuals.
“Together, they will brainstorm on how to rescue the nation. The party is fully aware of the meeting and is committed to working hard to achieve something significant for our country,” the LP spokesman said.
