UK varsity offers expelled Nigerian students flight assistance

0

Teesside University in the United Kingdom has announced a new initiative to support Nigerian students facing severe financial difficulties by funding their flights home, as reported by BBC on Tuesday.

This move came after several students were removed from their courses and ordered to leave the UK due to their inability to pay tuition fees.

The financial crisis in Nigeria, exacerbated by a shift from a seven-installment to a three-installment payment plan by the university, left many students struggling to cover their expenses.

A local food charity reported that 75 per cent of its clients are now Nigerian students, highlighting the extent of their financial hardship.

On May 22, 2024, a group of Nigerian students at Teesside University were expelled from their courses and ordered to leave the United Kingdom due to difficulties in paying their tuition fees on time.

The students cited the devaluation of the naira as a significant barrier to meeting their financial obligations, which has led to a breach of their visa sponsorship requirements.

Several students found themselves locked out of their university accounts, reported to the Home Office, and mandated to leave the UK.

The university maintained that strict external regulations necessitate these actions.

The affected students, numbering 60, expressed deep distress and disappointment, accusing the university of being unsupportive and “heartless.”

They banded together to urge the university for assistance after witnessing their peers face severe consequences for late payments.

On May 29, 2024, the Federal Government stepped in to address the deportation orders issued against some Nigerian students at Teesside University.

A delegation led by a representative of the Nigerian Embassy in the UK, Ambassador Christian Okeke, along with leaders of the Nigerian Students Union in the UK, met with the University’s management to seek a resolution.

However, following protests and the intervention of the Nigerian government, the university has re-enrolled some affected students and opened a relief fund.

“We are working with a small group who need to return to their home country and are opening an international relief fund to offer additional financial support for these unexpected travel costs,” a university spokesperson told the BBC.

The university is also offering some students the option to complete their studies remotely from Nigeria or to return to the UK at a later date.

The BBC understands some students have lodged legal appeals.

Dormant NPDC claims four banks, others fined N400m for data breach, hides offenders’ identity

0

In what could be likened to a massive cover-up, the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has refused to reveal the identities of banks, companies and others involved in leaking citizens’ data without consent.
The NDPC on Tuesday claimed that four major banks and three other institutions have been sanctioned and have incurred fines totalling N400m for infractions relating to breaches of citizens’ data.
However, the agency, saddled with the protection of citizens’ data failed to name the affected companies and financial institutions, nor did it give a breakdown of the amount any of the offenders paid, to bring the amount to the N400 million it claimed to have collected.
This is coming at a time data mining is at a peak and companies are abusing their access to citizens’ data.

More worrisome, NPDC’s National Commissioner, Vincent Olatunji during the press conference disclosed that over 1,000 financial institutions, schools, insurance companies, and consultancy firms are currently undergoing investigations for various degrees of breaches of citizens’ data.
He stressed the commission’s commitment to safeguarding citizens’ data by global best standards and practices, deeming it essential for ensuring its safety, security, and protection.
Yet, it appears the commission is protecting the culprits when they should be named and shamed.
In another development, checks by TVN have shown that the agency has failed to update its website since the 25th of February 2023.
The last time the agency updated its website or kept Nigerians abreast of its activities was on February 22, 2023 when it posted a news story about the partnership between the Voice Of Nigeria and NDPB To Promote Data Protection.
Since then, it has failed to update its website, raising questions as to its activeness in meeting its mandate.

Governor Douye Diri gave the assurance on Tuesday when he received a four-man team from the South-South and South-East divisions of the Bank of Industry in Government House, Yenagoa.

Diri who was represented by his deputy, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, said his administration would do everything within its power for the immediate and smooth take-off of the bank’s operations in the state.

He disclosed the state government had already provided a temporary operational office for the bank to immediately commence its operations in the state.

The governor said Bayelsa was in a hurry to catch up with other states in terms of industrial development and maintained that his administration would harness opportunities created by the bank to promote the growth of local industries in the state.

He called on the bank to disclose the list of Bayelsans who had already applied for loans and other facilities but could not meet the bank’s requirements for the state government consideration and necessary action.

His words: “Clearly, before now Bayelsa had not taken advantage of the opportunities created for us as a state by the Bank of Industry. However, this time we are ready to seize the opportunity you are going to create to drive the growth of our local industries.

“We want to establish a relationship with the BOI that would be fruitful and run very fast. We, as a government, have an emergency in our hands; while you have urgency in your hands.

“The state government had already provided three places for you to choose one and start to use it as a take-off operational office for the BOI in Bayelsa. The Deputy Chief of Staff to the Governor will take you there immediately after this meeting.

“We are ready for your operations even this month because the role of your bank is even more important than that of the mainstream commercial banks to the growth of local industries.”

Earlier in his presentation, the Divisional Head of the Bank of Industry, South-South and South-East, Kings Jack, pointed out that Bayelsa was the only state in the entire South-South in which the BOI was not fully operational.

Jack said the BOI team was in Bayelsa to seek collaboration with the state government on how to commence the bank’s services to stimulate industrial development of the oil-rich state.

He further disclosed that many corporate organisations and individuals from Bayelsa could not access the over one billion Nair BOI loan facility on account of the inability to procure certificates of occupancy and other requirements.

Jack expressed the readiness of the bank to advise the government on the right policies to stimulate the industrial and economic development of the state.

The visiting BOI team also had its Group Head, Strategic Communications, Seun Olagunju; the Regional Manager, South-South, Irabor Pacqueens, and the State Manager, Ojiegbe Uchechukeu.

Edo made plans for N70,000 minimum wage three years ago – Obaseki

0

Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has stated that the state Government made plans for a N70,000 minimum wage three years ago when the telltale signs began to show that the economy was going in the wrong direction.

According to a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the Edo State Governor on Media Projects, Crusoe Osagie, Obaseki stated this on Wednesday when the Editorial Board of Tell Magazine presented him with the Award for Exceptional Courage in Leadership, in Benin City on Tuesday.

He said that the state made the plans for the increase in minimum wage when he started raising the alarm on the excessive borrowings by the Federal Government to meet its statutory obligations.

According to him, ‘We can pay the N70,000 minimum wage because we planned in the last three years because we knew a day like this would come.

‘Thank God that we have been vindicated today, as our sincerity has helped us prevail over every situation. We see prospects for a better economy and transparent government in Edo State because of the institutional reforms we have introduced to better manage the State.’

He continued: ‘We have always prevailed because the majority of Edo people understand appreciate and endorse what our government has done. This has been the reason for the courage with which we have tackled any problem we faced along the way.’

Noting that the state was on a steady growth trajectory, he said, ‘For the next few months that are left for our administration, we will finish strong. We will finish all that we have started. This week, I will set up my transition team that will aggregate and document for the next administration all our achievements, projects and undertakings for our administration.’

BREAKING: President misinformed you, no agreement on new minimum wage yet

0

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has reacted to the Democracy Day Speech by the President, Bola Tinubu, where he gave assurance of a new minimum wage for the workforce, saying he failed to give them the much expected gift on June 12.
Ag. President of NLC, Comrade Prince Adewale Adeyanju who reacted on behalf of the union said the President may have accurately recounted parts of our democratic journey’s history, but that it is evident that he has been misinformed regarding the outcome of the wage negotiation process.
He said they expected the President to harmonize the two figures submitted to him by the Tripartite Committee in favour of workers and masses, stating that it would have been a fitting Democracy Day gift.
Quoting Mr. President; “As we continue to reform the economy, I shall always listen to the people and will never turn my back on you.
In this spirit, we have negotiated in good faith and with open arms with organized labour on a new national minimum wage. We shall soon send an executive bill to the National Assembly to enshrine what has been agreed upon as part of our law for the next five years or less.
In the face of labour’s call for a national strike, we did not seek to oppress or crack down on the workers as a dictatorial government would have done. We chose the path of cooperation over conflict.
No one was arrested or threatened. Instead, the labour leadership was invited to break bread and negotiate toward a good-faith resolution”
Adeyanju said the organised Labour appreciate the President’s commitment to those fine democratic ideals which allowed the work of the Tripartite National Minimum Wage Negotiation Committee to proceed unhindered despite some hiccups.
He said Labour had expected Mr. President to have used this understanding as one of those who was in the vanguard of the struggle with us around the nation to rescue Nigeria from the hands of the military to harmonize the two figures submitted to him by the Tripartite Committee in favour of workers and masses. It would have been a fitting Democracy Day gift.
According to the Acting NLC President, the NLC would have expected that the advisers of the President would have told him that we neither reached any agreement with the federal government and the employers on the base figure for a National Minimum Wage nor on its other components. Our demand still remains N250,000 (two hundred and fifty thousand Naira) only and we have not been given any compelling reasons to change this position which we consider a great concession by Nigerian workers during the tripartite negotiation process.
“We are therefore surprised at the submission of Mr. President over a supposed agreement. We believe that he may have been misled into believing that there was an agreement with the NLC and TUC.
“There was none and it is important that we let the President, Nigerians and other national stakeholders understand this immediately to avoid a mix up in the ongoing conversation around the national minimum wage. We have also not seen a copy of the document submitted to him and will not accept any doctored document.
“However, we want to reaffirm our belief that the President on whose table the Tripartite Committee’s report presently resides would prepare an Executive Bill which content will reflect the true demand of Nigerian workers. We think that this is an opportunity for him to demonstrate his love for Nigerian workers and masses by shunning the pieces of advise that may be coming from those whose intentions are continuously focused on hurting the poor and struggling workers of Nigeria. Mr. President should not allow these individuals and groups to sabotage his promise of lifting Nigerian workers out of poverty.
“President’s advisers obviously did not tell him the truth that the leaders of the trade unions were intimidated and harassed. It is therefore important that Mr. President understands that we were threatened severally by his operatives perhaps without his consent.
“Series of media Propaganda calculated to intimidate and harass us were, and, are still being waged against the trade unions by senior officials of this government. Fully armed soldiers surrounded us while we were in a negotiation with the Government and despite denials, recent statements by senior officials of the Government reaffirmed our fears contrary to the assurances by the Government. However, we remain assured that the President’s democratic credentials will come to the fore in favour of Nigerian workers and masses.
“It is also important that Mr. President should know that most of his officers are working round the clock to set up the leadership of congress and the trade unions. We never agreed on a 5-year duration of the minimum wage Act though we acknowledge that the President mentioned 5 years or less. We also agreed that inflation should be pegged at a level for certain amount to be agreed as minimum wage. This is to bring clarity to what the report should contain.
“Once again, we reiterate that it will be extremely difficult for Nigerian workers to accept any national minimum wage figure that approximates to a starvation Wage. We cannot be working and yet remain in abject poverty. We seek justice, equity and fairness for all Nigerians and this we hope would also drive the actions of Mr. President who promised a Living Wage to Nigerian workers. This is an opportunity to show that he listens to Nigerians as he promised!
“Together, we can build a stronger democratic nation based on equity which guarantees prosperity to the majority of the citizenry and not one where few individuals monopolize our collective resources. That is the only way to build a sustainable democracy. It is the true democracy that we all yearn for as a people!
