Kaduna communities lament link bridge collapse

The Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Executive Chairman of Zango Kataf Local Government Area, in Kaduna, Yabo Ephraim, has said gully erosion has cut off the Tsoriyang bridge along Zonkwa Madakiya road linking several communities and Kafanchan town, the headquarters of Jema’a Local Government Area of Kaduna State.p

According to a statement issued on Sunday by Ephraim, the bridge has posed a challenge to motorists making the area impassable.

He also advised commuters to take a different route for safety.

According reports that the Zonkwa-Madakiya is one of the fastest routes to access Jema’a Local Government Area.

“The Council Chairman, Francis Sani Zimbo urged the affected communities to exercise patience as effort is underway to fix the setback caused by the collapsed bridge.

“He equally appeals to all well meaning individuals to join hands in bringing solutions to the challenge,” Zimbo said.

A local resident in the area, Mr. Isaac Ishaku, said it was the delay by the relevant authority to intervene that led to the total collapse of the bridge.He said: “We saw the problem coming but surprisingly no action was taken by the authorities to mitigate the erosion threat. It all started as a small pothole close to the bridgehead but this year, unprecedented flood accelerated the erosion menace.

“This is the busiest route used by our people including those coming from Kaduna passing to Kafanchan town,” Ishaku said.

The Chief Executive of RwandAir, Yvonne Makolo, has said Qatar Airways is expected to finalise its deal of becoming the biggest shareholder of the Rwanda flag carrier by July.

Makolo said this while speaking with the Financial Times on Saturday.

“It’s been going on for a while, we have been discussing it for almost five years. So, now, we’re really at the tail-end of it,” Makolo said.

He added that for the past five years, Qatar and Rwanda have been working on a deal which would give the Gulf nation’s airline a 49 per cent stake in RwandAir for an undisclosed sum.

Qatar Airways declined to comment while RwandAir did not immediately respond to a request for further comment on the development.

Earlier this year, Qatar Airways Chief Executive Officer, Badr Mohammed Al Meer said that Qatar Airways would soon announce an investment in an airline in southern Africa.

Qatar Airways in 2019 took a 60 per cent stake in a new $1.3 bn international airport being built in Rwanda and has codeshare agreements with several airlines in Africa including RwandAir.

A former member of the House of Representatives, Shina Peller, has called on Nigerian Muslims to embrace kindness and peaceful coexistence with individuals of other faiths.

Armed robbers kill DJ in Abuja hotel raid

A hotel located in the Gwarinpa area of the Federal Capital Territory was attacked by a gang of armed robbers on Saturday.

The attack resulted in the death of a disc jockey who was shot during the incident.

The DJ was said to have died at the Federal Medical Centre in Jabi, Abuja, where he was rushed to.

It was also gathered that some guests were subjected to the harrowing experience of being robbed of their valuables and personal belongings.

A resident of the area who witnessed the incident identified simply as Sani said the incident had caused panic in the area, as incidents of armed robbery have become rampant.

He said, ” In the early hours of Saturday, some armed robbers attacked the Volcano Hotel at Gwarinpa. They robbed some guests in the hotel and took away their belongings. The money and phones of the guests were stolen.

“A DJ was shot. He died at the hospital in Jabi. We have been experiencing a series of armed robbery incidents in Gwarinpa recently, and this particular one has heightened fears among residents. ”

On X.com, a tweep, Kidbold wrote, “A club in Gwarimpa, Abuja was attacked in the early hours of this morning by gunmen and a DJ I know was killed.
“There’s a police station not far from the place.”

Attempts to reach the hotel’s management were unsuccessful, as calls made to the phone number listed on its website went unanswered.

Confirming the incident, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, on Sunday identified the slain DJ as Bashir Dauda.

Adeh noted that the police rushed to the scene immediately after receiving a distress call and found Dauda on the floor.

She said the police rushed the victim to the hospital, where he was confirmed dead.

She said, “On 15/06/2024 at about 05:07 am a distress call was received by the FCT Police Command that a robbery incident had taken place at Volcano Peak Court Hotel, 4th Avenue around 03:35 am.

“Operatives from the Gwarimpa Police Division immediately deployed to the scene, secured the premises, and discovered that one Bashir Dauda had been shot by the attackers.

“The victim was quickly rushed to Federal Medical Centre, Jabi, where doctors on duty confirmed him dead. The corpse was released on the request of the family to be buried according to Islamic rites.”

Adeh noted that an investigation was ongoing on the incident.

She added, “Investigation is still ongoing in a bid to apprehend the culprits while further developments will be communicated in due course.

“The FCT Police Command advises residents to always be conscious of their surroundings, when you notice suspicious activities, call the police immediately, and we will respond swiftly.”

Kaduna spends N4bn annually on school feeding- Gov’s aide

The Special Assistant to the Kaduna State Governor on School Geeding, Dr Fauziya Buhari-Ado, said N4bn is spent annually on school feeding in a bid to curb the growing number of out-of-school children in the state.

Buhari-Ado disclosed this in a statement made available to our correspondent in Abuja on Sunday.

He added that over 25,000 students in 51 boarding schools across the 23 local government areas benefit from the programme.

He said, “No fewer than 25,000 students in 51 boarding schools across the 23 local government areas benefit from the programme since the feeding cost was improved from N540 per child per day to N700 per child per day, translating to about N4 billion annual spending.”

She added that the initiative which has significantly boosted school enrollment and daily attendance rates has stimulated local economies by sourcing food from local farmers and vendors, providing them with a stable market and contributing to economic growth within the state.

Reiterating her resolve to ensure compliance with menu guidelines, food quality, quantity, hygiene standards, and timely service delivery, she remarked that the state government has saved millions of naira due to the verification of the beneficiaries of the programme openly and transparently.

She said the success of the school feeding program stands as a testament to Governor Sani’s vision and dedication to the well-being of the people of Kaduna State.

Underlining the essence of the programme, she noted, “In these challenging times, our schools have become beacons of hope and safety for our children. The school feeding program has relieved parents of the burden of providing for their children’s basic needs, ensuring that no child goes hungry.

“This act alone sends a powerful signal that Kaduna State stands as one, united people. Our children come from diverse cultural and religious backgrounds, yet they thrive as one, sleeping together, eating together, and studying together with no differences.

“This unity is the cornerstone of our strength as a state, and it is exemplified through initiatives like the school feeding program.”

She added, “Furthermore, the economic impact of the school feeding programme cannot be overlooked. It has not only created opportunities for local food vendors and suppliers but has also stimulated growth in our local economies.

Oluwo under fire for exposing head in Mecca

The Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi, recently came under fire for opening his head while praying for peace of mind, long life, and mercy for himself during his stay in Makkah, Saudi Arabia.

In a video he posted on social media, his head was uncovered, and that attracted mixed reactions, because it is customary for a Yoruba king to always cover his head, especially when in public.

One of his followers, fabricsbyarinola wrote, “I thought (a) king must not open their head in public?”

Acube321 wrote, “Kabiesi oooo, sir you are not supposed to open your head. You can’t be the custodian of Yoruba culture and still worship in the Arab way. This is intriguing. You are demeaning our culture, sir. This is too bad sir.”

Meanwhile, some others saw nothing wrong with the Iwo king’s action. Nadee_a_kitchen_treat wrote, “See my hometown king. Everybody is equal in the presence of Almighty Allah. Islam is beautiful. May Almighty Allah accept your worship.”

Meanwhile, the Oluwo was also criticised for a particular prayer he said. In another video he posted on social media, he prayed that just as millions of Muslims all over the world visit Makkah in pilgrimage, people should have not rest until they visit Iwo.
