Cleric urges Tinubu to tackle insecurity

The leader of Moitaliatu Church of God, Gabriel Akinadewo, has expressed concern over the spate of insecurity in some parts of the country which has led to the loss of lives.

Apart from insecurity, the cleric also called on President Bola Tinubu to resolve the issue of inflation, lamenting that Nigerians are suffering.

Akinadewo, who is also the Chairman, Board of Trustees, of the church’s Moitaliatu Organisation Worldwide, spoke during the 60th anniversary of the church in Ondo town, Ondo State on Sunday, and advised the Federal Government to do the right thing to stem insecurity in the country.

He expressed worry over the way church leaders and prominent citizens of the country are being kidnapped and killed despite the payment of ransom to the kidnappers.

He said, ” A pastor was killed in Oyo State last week while going on a mission with some people. This man was kidnapped and after collecting ransom, the pastor was killed. This doesn’t make sense in a country like Nigeria.

“A few days ago we sent our soldiers to Sierra Leone to maintain peace.Why can’t we do the same in Nigeria?

“In anything you want to do, intelligence gathering is the key. It is not about going about with riffles. Once we have effective intelligence gathering, these bandits, I don’t think they are more than 20,000 or 30,000 people.

“They are the ones terrorising Nigerians. We have prayed and prayed but the government should do what is right. No group of people can overpower the government. As long as you are within the 774 local governments in Nigeria, as long as you are within the 36 states of the federation including FCT, the president of the country can get you anywhere you are.

“Anywhere you are they will smoke you out when they are ready. How come that terrorists are all over the place? They kidnapped another Catholic priest in Kaduna last week but he was rescued after paying ransom. This doesn’t make sense at all. The government must be serious. If they want to get all these terrorists in one month or two, they will get them.”

On inflation and the rise in prices of goods and services, Akinadewo advised the government to reintroduce fuel subsidy.

He also advised the president to enlarge his economic team to accommodate those in the private sector who understand the economy.

“There is nowhere in the world that there is no subsidy. Even in the United States of America, there is an agreed-upon subsidy. We need to rethink,” Akinadewo stated.

Highly contagious cholera strain spreads in Lagos, Abayomi warns

The Lagos State Health Commissioner, Prof Akin Abayomi, said laboratory tests carried out on samples have confirmed that the disease outbreak in the state is due to cholera and the identified strain is highly aggressive and contagious, with potential for widespread dissemination.

Abayomi made this known on his Instagram page @profakinabayomi on Monday while giving an update on the cholera outbreak in the state.

Cholera is a food and water-borne disease caused by ingesting the bacteria— Vibrio cholerae— in contaminated water and food. Cholera can cause severe acute watery diarrhoea, and the severe forms of the disease can kill within hours if left untreated.

In Nigeria, cholera is an endemic and seasonal disease, occurring annually mostly during the rainy season and more frequently in areas with poor sanitation.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention warned the public of the increasing trend of cholera cases as the rainy season intensifies.

The centre noted that the 10 states contributing 90 per cent to the burden of the current cholera outbreak include Bayelsa, Zamfara, Abia, Cross River, Bauchi, Delta, Katsina, Imo, Nasarawa, and Lagos states.

There were 473,000 cholera cases reported to WHO in 2022 – double the number from 2021. A further increase of 700,000 cases was estimated in 2023.

The latest data from the World Health Organisation showed that a cumulative total of 145,900 cholera cases and 1,766 deaths were reported from 24 countries across five WHO regions, with Africa recording the highest numbers, followed by the Eastern Mediterranean Region, the Region of the Americas, the South-East Asia Region, and the European Region.

The commissioner noted that through community-based case finding and contact tracing, the number of cases has peaked and is now declining.

The geographical distribution of suspected cases by Local Government Area showed that Lagos Island is the epicentre of the outbreak with 106 cases; followed by Kosofe 49; Eti-Osa 38; Lagos mainland 30; Ojo 17; Ikorodu 16; Kosofe 16; Shomolu 11.

Others are Surulere -nine; Apapa -eight; Mushin -eight; Ifako Ijaiye -eight; Mushin -five; Alimosho -four; Ajeromi Ifelodun -four; Oshodi-Isolo -three; Ikeja three; Ibeju Lekki -two; Badagry -two; Amuwo-Odofin -one.

He, however, disclosed that there are 17 confirmed cases out of 350 suspected cases and 15 deaths so far.

Abayomi said, “350 suspected cases of cholera were reported in 29 wards across multiple LGAs in Lagos State with 17 confirmed cases and 15 fatalities attributed to severe dehydration caused by delayed presentation.

“We are receiving support from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and international partners, including the WHO and United Nations Children’s Fund.

“Local Non-Governmental organisations are actively raising awareness and conducting community-based surveillance efforts.”

He also said the state is intensifying its public health campaigns in light of the Sallah celebrations and the associated transmission risks from gatherings and catering services, to prevent a resurgence.

“Suspected cases are receiving free treatment at our public health facilities, in line with public health response protocols,” he added.

Seven die in Indian train crash

At least seven people were killed when an express passenger train and a goods train collided on Monday in India’s West Bengal state, derailing three passenger carriages, police said.

Images on Indian broadcasters showed the tangled wreckage of carriages flipped on their side, and one thrust high into the air precariously balanced on another.

Police said rescuers were scouring the twisted carriages in case there were more bodies trapped beneath.

“We have confirmation of seven deaths and 39 passengers admitted at a local hospital with various injuries,” local police officer Iftikar-Ul-Hassan told AFP.

The incident is the latest to hit India’s creaking rail network, which carries millions of passengers daily.

“We just saw the bodies of a dead driver and a guard… their bodies were taken out,” Rajesh Kumar Singh, from the Railway Protection Force, told AFP.

“Some more bodies may be under the crash site, but we don’t yet know for sure.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered his condolences to “those who lost their loved ones”, in a post on social media, adding that “rescue operations are underway”.

‘Tragic’

West Bengal’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called the crash “tragic” in a post on social media.

“Doctors, ambulances and disaster teams have been rushed to the site for rescue, recovery and medical assistance,” Banerjee said. “Action on war footing initiated.”

Banerjee said the crash took place in the Phansidewa area of Darjeeling district, when the Kanchenjunga Express train was hit by a goods train.

Railways minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the “injured are being shifted to the hospital”.

India has one of the world’s largest rail networks and has seen several disasters over the years, the worst in 1981 when a train derailed while crossing a bridge in Bihar state, killing an estimated 800 people.

In June last year, a three-train collision killed nearly 300 people in Odisha state.

In recent years, India has been investing huge sums of money to upgrade the network with modern stations and electronic signalling systems.

On Sunday, a train crossed for the first time the world’s highest railway bridge — 359 metres (1178 feet) above a river — in India’s Himalayan region, the railways minister Vaishnaw said.

The arch-shaped steel structure over the Chenab River links sections of northern Jammu and Kashmir state, connecting the disputed territory to the rest of India.

Work on the railway track has been ongoing for nearly three decades, and the trial run comes ahead of a formal opening expected within weeks.

When asked why he is speaking about the sickle cell disease, Adekunle Gold said, “Because I just really got the courage to come out and speak about it, a lot of people can share their story as I can. I was writing the song 5-star and I was reflecting on my life, the journey, how I’m a miracle.”Because the line was sickle cell show me a crisis, like back it was a tough time for me, I was reflecting on that song and thought maybe it was time to even lend my voice because people are dying.

Speaking on the challenges he has had to overcome living with Sickle cell, Adekunle Gold said, “Because I knew that I didn’t want this thing to define me, if it means that I needed to exercise more, take my drugs more, eat well, take more water.”

UNIABUJA management not cause of ASUU members withheld salaries — VC

The Vice-chancellor of the University of Abuja, Prof. Abdulrasheed Na’allah has said that the institution is not responsible for the withheld salaries of academics under the aegis of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, UniAbuja chapter who are currently on strike.

ASUU members in the institution have been on strike for over 40 days over matters related to appointing a new VC. The lecturers had also accused the management of withholding lecturers’ salaries.

But the VC in a statement obtained by our correspondent in Abuja on Monday noted that despite the ongoing strike, the management of the institution approved payment of salaries to all academic staff despite the “no work no pay” policy of the Federal Government.

“University Management approved payment of salaries  to all academic staff, and included with magnanimity, even those on strike who deserve no salary because of the activation of  ‘No Work No Pay’  policy of the Nigerian government in the University.”

Na’allah further noted that the management of the institution was in contact with the government to inquire what was responsible for the delay, “and the information available to us is that it might be from a glitch in the  Remita.“

The VC noted that the management is however surprised that  ASUU branch leadership which along with some of its members walked out on their students and have refused to work for more than a month now,  and “who ordinarily deserve no salary,  are the ones first to cry wolf and working to blackmail the University.

“It is unfortunate and painful to Management that the academic staff are subjected to this suffering, especially those who laboured day and night to make life meaningful for their students. What is important to us, at the moment, is that the IPPIS has since confirmed that May 2024 Academic Salary has been released for payment and the continued delay now being experienced might be from the Remita and not from Management,” the VC said.

On Saturday, members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, and the Congress of University Academics of the University of Abuja lamented their unpaid salaries by authorities of the institution.

But the institution’s branch of ASUU which has been on strike for 41 over the move by the outgoing Vice Chancellor, Prof Abdulrasheed Na’allah to advertise the position of VC of the institution vowed not to suspend its action, saying the action by the school’s authorities which was meant to break its rank, has rather made it stronger.

The anti-graft boss felicitated with the nation on the occasion of Eid-El-Kabir, emphasizing that the lessons of the festival should drive more commitments to the anti-corruption fight.
“The lessons of forbearance, sacrifice, faith and hope in Almighty Allah which Eid teaches should imbue in us fresh desire to please God and serve our nation without corrupt practices.
“We should renew our efforts towards fighting all forms of economic and financial crimes,” he said.

Veteran Nigerian musician, Eedris Abdulkareem Ajenifuja aka Eedris Abdulkareem, has called out the General Overseer of the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, over his silence on President Bola Tinubu’s administration despite the unbearable hardship in the country.
The rapper known for his criticism of bad government policies, in a new song titled: “Emilokan” he dropped on Sunday, faulted Adeboye’s refusal to speak on the government’s actions and policies which has left the country in severe economic crisis.
He also criticized Adeboye for not mobilising his members to go on a protest march against the government like he threatened to do during former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration.
The singer added that the influential cleric has a responsibility to speak out on national issues affecting the citizens.
He said: “Our daddy, Pastor Adeboye during Goodluck Jonathan your voice was so loud. You even vowed to stage a one million march.

The video has however sparked debate on social media with many calling for religious leaders to take a stand on political matters, while others attacked the artiste for daring to drag Adeboye in his song.

Kenyan policeman shoots judge in court for revoking wife’s bail

A senior police officer was shot dead after he opened fire on a magistrate in a Nairobi courtroom, following a ruling involving his wife, BBC reports.

Chief Inspector, Samson Kipchirchir Kipruto, who was in charge of a police station in Londiani, western Kenya, attacked Makadara Principal Magistrate, Monica Kivuti.

This occurred on Thursday shortly after she cancelled bail for Kipruto’s wife due to her failure to appear in court.

Infuriated by the decision, Kipruto pulled out a gun and shot Magistrate Kivuti, wounding her, as reported by the BBC.

Court officers were reported to have immediately intervened, and in the ensuing confrontation, Kipruto was shot dead.

Three other officers were also injured during the incident, according to a police report.

The judiciary confirmed that Magistrate Kivuti had revoked the bail for an accused person who had jumped bond and did not provide satisfactory reasons for doing so.

The judiciary’s statement read, “Immediately this decision was pronounced, a person shot at the magistrate and injured her on the hip.”

It noted initial reports that indicated “that the shooter is a police officer who is married to the suspect.”

The national police service mentioned that Kipruto was present in court for “unknown reasons,” and investigations are underway to determine the circumstances that led to the shooting.

The injured magistrate and officers were initially said to be receiving treatment in the hospital.

However, on Saturday, Justice Martha K Koome wrote on X, that Makadara Principal Magistrate Monica Kivuti had “lost the fight” against her “extensive injuries”.

“It is with a heavy heart that I inform the nation that Hon. Monica Kivuti, Principal Magistrate, Makadara Law Courts has lost the fight against the extensive injuries sustained during an open gun attack in Court.”

“The Judiciary family stands in solidarity during this deeply traumatic time and calls for sensitivity and compassion as we share in grief,” said Justice Koome.

A source at Nairobi Hospital told The Star newspaper that Ms Kivuti was shot in the chest and leg.

In response, the judiciary has vowed to enhance security measures, ensuring the safety of judicial staff and court attendees.

Chief Registrar of the Judiciary Winfridah Mokaya expressed sympathy, stating, “As the judiciary family, we wish our colleague a quick recovery. We also send our condolences to the family of the officer who lost his life in this unfortunate incident.”
